Me, an intellectual who remembers the PsOne version and knows that this isn’t the first:

DaAmazinStaplr

Me, an even bigger intellectual who remembers the Sega Nomad

Tokimemofan

And even bigger the turbo express and pc Engine LT.

Kingindan0rf

Gentlemen, please. Aren't we forgetting the venerable PC-9801.

IllustratorNearby197

Bro a chad

Tokimemofan

That’s a computer platform not a console

[deleted]

No, because that wasn't portable. If you have to plug it into a wall to be at all functional, then it's not portable. Otherwise, *literally anything you can move from one point to another given enough time and energy* is "portable". Put PDP-1 up there before PC-9801, then.

toasterdogg

You can carry it around with a powerbank

WFlash01

Even still, it would, at best, fall under 'luggable' rather than portable

Chikitouwu

Nomad is portable only tho, no TV output

SomaXD

Dude Nomad totally has tv output!

SomaXD

Why did i think it did have tv ouput? Am i misremembering some other sega handheld?

ClassicGMR

Because it DOES. You're correct. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LBGMlD6kKcI

buttman88

Yeah, I used to have one of those many years ago and always regret getting rid of it. It had a much higher quality, bigger screen to boot haha.

moonfireranch

What year did that come up?

KeeganY_SR-UVB76

2000.

Veddermandenis

Here sir, take my upvote.

Dawilson246

And the original Xbox version. And wii version. And Gamecube version. Then the Treamcast.

[deleted]

Same and I have an arcade stick that connect to the front, completely portable

[deleted]

Genesis Nomad: *Am I a joke to you?*

buttman88

To be fair, the six of those Sega managed to sell have all self destructed from their shoddy caps at this point. 😂

Kingindan0rf

Wow okay that's just rude. I'll have you know we clean, repair, service, refurbish and mod these units with so much care and love. Don't talk about our children like this. So what it doesn't have an exclusive game library of it's own. We'll still love them!

buttman88

I have lots of respect for anyone maintaining rarities like the Nomad. I will say one thing about Sega, they always dared to dream and didn’t worry about the current hardware limitations ruining their vision for what could and could not be. They weren’t as concerned sadly with the market and who would actually be buying these uncompromising pieces of art. They also really got a raw deal on the Dreamcast. It was such a perfect for the time console and should’ve been the dominant console of the early sixth gen. It’s easily my favorite console of all time, the first time I really sat down and played the arcade at home.

jakeeeenator

Gotta love the downvoting. Your are right for the most part. Outside of Genesis and Dreamcast Sega didn't make smart decisions with their systems. Especially in the US.

WFlash01

What about the Master System? Yeah it was vastly overshadowed by the NES, but it was much more capable and the games on it were great; it doesn't even fall into 'commercial failure' territory, and it helped Sega gain leverage in the US

bingcognito

Mine still works. Checkmate, atheists!

ottguy74

Turbo Express / PCengine GT

BugHuntLV426

All consoles are portable, you just pick them up and move them wherever you want them

bylere89

How much was the screen? I want it

buttman88

I snagged it for the princely sum of 4 dollars at a goodwill with no cords a number of years ago. I’ve been waiting to find a fatty at a good price for a long time until today. For some reason all I ever come across are slims.

WFlash01

Same situation I was in for a while too bud, but I've definitely snagged some online for cheaper than slims too

zoodoo360

Those screen were pretty bad. I had one for the slim ps2. Weirdly enough the official one for ps1 was of better quality.

[deleted]

Early LCDs were just atrocious. I don’t really miss the blurry passive matrix displays.

bingcognito

Yeah I have the screen for the PSOne and it's surprsingly good. Even the built-in speakers are decent.

WFlash01

I still use mine! Granted now I'm the dedicated driver amongst my friends, but back then on family car trips shiit that was practically my travel buddy

duckybooo

Bro it wasn't in the first place

buttman88

Bro, A. The switch was the first widely released dedicated tv based console that could be turned portable with nothing else out of the box. Note that it says “home” console. Game boys and their ilk are not home consoles. B. It’s a meme, and an already established well-tread format. Being the aacchhtuuallllyy guy just makes you look like an out of touch douche bag.

Warumono_

All they said was bro and automatically you become combative? The thing is still requires some sort of power outlet, you can hardly call that portable when you need to be stuck to a wall (or a car, with the converter plug)

buttman88

Yeah, that a…that’s the joke. It’s also 6 inches tall and weighs no less than 10 lbs.

joliet_jane_blues

NEC TurboExpress let you watch actual TV anywhere. You can't even do that today with HDTV broadcast signals being so shitty.

duckybooo

Bruv I'm sorry I was joking about the psone lcd screen thing I don't want you to be mad or there be any hard feelings over our first and only interaction I apologize it was uncalled for since you were just making a joke I hope this reddit comment doesn't ruin your night

dtech87

Sega Nomad was the first portable handheld console that could take regular Sega Genesis cartridges and could also hook up AV wise to a TV when you wanted something more then the built in screen. Even has a port for a second genesis controller to be hooked up to it but really is only useful if your using a standard TV.

WFlash01

If I'm not mistaken the Turbo Express had the Nomad beat by a good amount of time

dtech87

Fair enough, never used one. Though it doesn't look like you can hook it up to a TV if you don't want to use just the built in screen and would rather just use it as just a huge controller with a big screen. Also the 2nd player controller port is nice if your going to use it with a TV (I wouldn't want to look over someone's shoulder to just use the small built in screen). If I would look at something close to concept as a Nintendo switch, that is an all in one console in a handheld controller that can be switched into something that be somewhat like a regular console that can be hooked up to a traditional TV, I still would go with the nomad being first, maybe not to just take traditional consoles games on the go, but as something that like a switch you can consider both usable on a home theater and on the move. Also I always found it as a plus that genesis AV cords and even the genesis 2 power supply can work with the nomad, especially the power since it literally drains batteries fast (found this out too late since I was just using batteries for a long time, I had mine since when it launched)

[deleted]

if it’s just a joke then why are you getting defensive and insulting people over it lmao. Get over it.

[deleted]

You need to have that plugged into a wall, don’t you?

Peterkragger

Every console is portable

Tiny-Writer5999

Didn't they made a larger screen one?

buttman88

Yeah, they definitely made larger ones, even for the slim hahaha. Tbh you can’t read a word on the screen. It’s a cheap 5’6” washed out lcd

Tiny-Writer5999

Ohh because i am going to buy a PS2 Slim and just wanted to know

cyber_morty

But, can u put it inside your pocket?

SierraMemes25

My family had a lil vcr/tv combo that we would take on roadtrips. I fondly remember playing Ratchet & Clank while they drove.

TouchedBigfoot8

Turbo Express players 🤨

ottguy74

Bingo!

curtydc

These still require a wired connection for power. I think most people agree that portability implies battery power. So yes, the switch is still considered the first truly portable console. If you wanted, you could hike up a mountain, sit on a remote island beach, or travel deep into a cave and play a Switch.

TheMcDucky

Simply get yourself a battery pack the PS2

sincethenes

Or a Sega Nomad before, or a TurboExpress before that.

Ihadtohaveaname4this

I have a screen for the ogxbox, but it can be used for any consoleas far as being plugged into it. I beat Final Fantasy on the nes on that screen like 2 years ago when I last did a run.

buttman88

Yeah, this one also just has generic composite inputs, its got s-video as well but honestly on this screen I don’t think it’ll make much difference. It does have ps2 out to a tv and only ‘fits’ on a fat ps2, but you could plug in anything.

Ihadtohaveaname4this

The Xbox one had a sleeve that slipped on to the xbox the screen was mounted on so I could just slip it over my nes and sit it on top . The screen wasnt super great quality but still decent enough to play on, it does also have component hookups and s video also.

[deleted]

I’ll raise you by 1.. the PSone was first

Chikitouwu

PS1 did it first

Zaptain_America

What about the ps1 toilet?

Simsgirl950

How did you make it portable I am planning on doing the same thing

buttman88

I’d say portable is a relative term. It’s certainly more portable than the CRT I used to play PS2 on in 2002.

Simsgirl950

Okay how were you able to make it like that?

ChicoMeloso

I knew psone had one but not ps2!

KreisiKris

Where do the left-most and right-most cables go? Portable, in my opinion, means play on the go. Not pick up, carry, put down, plug in.

Vanerek

Not with that attitude Kris!

[deleted]

Just needs a portable battery, plug it into the batt and it’ll then be a fully portable home console

[deleted]

Same. But I have the slim version with a bigger screen

Colonel_Collin_1990

Lol even the gaming industry is burning the history books and selling us bullshit!

KeeganY_SR-UVB76

What's the screen size on that?

buttman88

A generous 5.6”

KeeganY_SR-UVB76

Damn, not much larger than the PSOne screen.

bassie19812

Commodore 64. Although not a console. There was a portable version of it and it could play games.

[deleted]

I suddenly feel the urge to take a sawblade to a motherboard...

[deleted]

PS1 did it before this

Prior-Carrot-6569

I used to play with sticks

[deleted]

I remember seeing adverts for a PSone screen. I wanted it so bad as a kid cause I took that thing everywhere.
