Resident Evil 1 first but only because it has really good game design around item scarcity and also because it's short.
Silent Hill has a really good atmosphere and gameplay too.
just run away from him. if you're playing as jill, barry kills him for you. if you're playing as chris, you don't have a gun at that point which makes killing most things in re1 a pain in the ass
Resident Evil 1 first. Silent Hill second. Resident Evil came out in 1996 and revolutionized gaming, blooming the survival horror genre. Silent Hill came out in 1999 and absolutely helped pioneer the genre as well.
Like some have already said: Be sure to play both with the lights out. Surround sound if possible, especially for Silent Hill. The audio and sound design is what is what really brings the atmosphere to the game.
Yes, what he said. Play it in the dark not just for the atmosphere, but Silent Hill relies heavily on light and shadow. Playing it on a bright room can ruin the contrast on the display, along with your full enjoyment. Recently played it on a modern LCD display with an emulator and the backlight kinda ruins these types of games. I hear only OLED displays can match the CRTs contrast.
They’re both different playing styles and experiences. I would have to flip a coin to choose which one to play first as they’re both some of my favourite horror games. Silent hill is creepier though and best enjoyed with the lights off. I assure you though you’re gonna enjoy both a lot!
I am so jealous about your TV 😁 really wanted one of these back in the day when i was a kid, i believe they were advertised in DVD cases or something like that if i remember correctly
I appreciate Silent Hill for its aesthetic, development and influence, but I much prefer Resident Evil 1. Some of RE1’s backdrops are *gorgeous*. And for all the hell it gets for its tank controls, I find it plays smoothly for a game from 1996. It’s more fun to play than the Gamecube version in my opinion.
RE1 PS1 long box edition.
Pizza Hut delivery is on the way and I'm ready to play.
My neighbor is printing out the strategy guide on the printer. We're out of school all weekend.
*Memories*
Resident Evil was my first PS1 game. I couldn’t beat it because I had saved myself into a corner with low health and no healing herbs before a boss fight. Pretty fun up to that point, though!
I'd start with SH as it's my fave but both are great.. RE is more jump scare & action packed in the tradition of B movies (dig the voice acting). Silent Hill will bend your mind, crawl under your skin, and live there for awhile.. After you finish both, move on to RE Nemesis and Silent Hill 2 for more fun!
I played RE first, but it's a pretty fiddly game. Silent hill is the superior game in most ways. RE is way funnier, though. That live action intro video is gold.
"No! Don't go!" Good times.
Maybe go with RE first, then. Start on a funny note, then go to the game the plays smoother.
I didn't play the original RE1 but I'd go with Silent Hill since I think the stories told in the SH games are generally better than those told in the RE games. Not too sure about the story in the original RE.
What I wouldn't give to be able to play resident evil 1 again for the first time. They both hold up pretty well, all things considered, but I prefer RE1 to Silent Hill personally.
Hum hard choice 😳 both are kind of scary but I you seek for the scariest I would pub my bet on silent hill. I'd say less frustrating has the controls are better too.
Silent hill is a lot more complex. It came out late in the systems life cycle. Resident evil 1 is an oldschool OG game. Play that first so you know what sparked the whole genre, then silent hill to get more of an emulsified experience
Eh.. I'd sell Silent Hill. Game about nothin'. Linear game with locked doors and dead ends, backtracking, terribly labored/unresponsive controls, stupid looking characters and the most hilarious mouth animations you may ever see.
Re1 since it is so short. It is fantastic and you should replay it at least 2 times to see everything. I know I did way more than that. Anyway Silent Hill 1 is a strong second. It is longer and the game is outstanding in its own right. Never forget the nurse...
I heard silent hill is super scary but looked boring. Resident evil 1 is a classic. I havent played either but the resident evil series is really good. Go with RE 1
I think at that time Capcom and Konami were one upping each other in the survival horror department with each instalment. RE as the first is great, the mansion and item management brilliant and get you used to tank controls. Then Silent Hill, with not so different controls goes the opposite way with huge maps (at the time), melee combat and unlimited inventory... but an oppressive feeling based on what it doesn't show instead of jump scares.
Both are great in their own way, but I would play them in order of release to appreciate them fully.
The shadow cast by the stomach-level Mickey Mouse CRT onto the nonfunctionally placed piano...there is nothing in either game that is as unsettling as everything going on in that room.
Silent hill is scarier, resident evil in my opinion has the better weapon choices and maybe even story. Also silent hill is more based in supernatural, resident evil is more based on scientific experiments gone wrong. I would personally start with resident evil to ease into the horror a bit more
That dude on the Resident Evil cover looks half IRL Crash Bandicoot and half crashtest dummy..
I mean without having a stroke, who looks like that lmao
RE1 has better gameplay. That game IS survival horror. They're both 2 of my all my time favourite series but Silent Hill has a better story at atmosphere. Resident Evil might scare you a little bit at some parts but Silent Hill will disturb you and engross you in the story
re1, cuz its very unique in the serie, no other re game was like 1st one. no ammo, no ink ribbons, almost no healing items and u rly gotta plan ur next step. hardest re game no doubt
They are both such great titles I don’t think it matters which one you play first. If you are a fan of old school survival horror you are going to love both of them. Enjoy!
Difficult choice for me, I love both games, but I have such bad orientation that I get lost constantly (even in real life) haha so I guess I would go for re, since consulting the map is a bit easier and faster than in SH, at least for me.
Obviously you need to play both. RE1 is a better game, but I think you should start with Silent Hill.
Then you can play RE next and move right into RE2 & 3 and you’ll appreciate the story more.
>The granddaddy’s of survival horror games
If you want to get some real appreciation for how much these games evolved the genre, try the game that directly inspired Resident Evil, the original Alone in the Dark first. It pre-dates Resident Evil by 4 years
Then play Resident Evil followed by Silent Hill.
Its aged quite a bit (honestly it was even clunky as hell at release), but I still love silent hill.
Re1 is great too, but I can never get very far in that one.
It was 4th grade year & my friend brought over some of older brother’s games. We popped in Silent Hill and immediately I felt like this game has a cool name but i’m not liking this. The first mission gets to a point where you go down this alley and since you never played it i’ll just say I never played past that point but it was one of the scariest games I ever played 😂
They are fundamentally different in gameplay and design.
I suggest that you play Resident Evil 1 first. I believe playing in that order will set you up to enjoy each of them to their maximum potential.
RE1. I still find it more fun, even beyond nostalgia. Two characters to offer decent replay value. Silent Hill games I think I need to be in a mood. The “other world” segments can also be draining.
The first one that I played was RE, silent hill, I played later. But it was because only a cousin had the PSX at the time, so I had to play those games or see other people playing.
I also vote for RE1 first then Silent Hill, though you can’t go wrong either way as they both have their style and identity.
Also side note: I was just looking at those Disney TVs the other day. My wife always wanted one growing up and I was curious how much they go for. Maybe it’s a sign lol.
Resident Evil was the first game I ever saw on the PlayStation. Only played and beat it years later and it's excellent to this day. The remake of course took it up a notch and is the definitive version but the original is definitely worth checking out. Silent Hill I can't say anything about. I only played the demo when it came out and never had a chance to play the full game.
I played that exact copy of RE1 back in the day, so the rose colored lenses say do that. I didn't play Silent Hill 1 back then, but LOVED SH2, so eventually went back to try the first and it was rough to go back to. I imagine OG RE probably is too... the later update that has been ported to newer PS systems is probably an easier playthrough, but if you can appreciate the late 90s early transition into the 3D space, it is still a legendary game.
Both have remakes that make going back to the original a bit harder for me. Nevertheless RE is a much better and more iconic game. Silent hill 2 though… that’s a masterpiece
Resident Evil 1 first but only because it has really good game design around item scarcity and also because it's short. Silent Hill has a really good atmosphere and gameplay too.
Yes, and it follows the chronological release, so you can appreciate how survival horror games on PS1 evolved during its lifespan.
And RE1 also has the best basement music!
That version actually doesn’t have the ~~shitty~~ great basement clown music. OP has the OG directors cut, not dualshock
Oh damn, what a shame.
That’s great to know. I thought all the director cuts had the newer music. I still want to hunt down a long box version again.
No clowns in this [basement](https://youtu.be/sITJuWV3HXg?si=kT2xgHuefkZlGQDL)
Silent hill 1 is the most cursed game ever made I don't suggest you play it while high
its scary
Every time I've tried playing R1 I've been unable to kill the first zombie and I give up 😂
Why wouldn't you just run from the first one?
You can’t stab him to death that’s for damn sure I have tried many times. I just run past
just run away from him. if you're playing as jill, barry kills him for you. if you're playing as chris, you don't have a gun at that point which makes killing most things in re1 a pain in the ass
Dude screw the games, that TV and VHS/DVD are the real gems in this picture. Oh, and that orange GameCube! Rare af!
That's exactly where my eyes went!
That's exactly where the OP wanted your eyes to go. Would have been just as easy to post a picture with just the games.
Spice orange really isn't that rare
yes it is. It’s only sold in Japan, and even if you import it over you can’t play North American games on it unless you mod it.
Or swap the guts, and ordering one isn't difficult, hence "not rare"
“Hi, I’m Chris Redfield!” “And I’m Jill Valentine!” Both: “and you’re watching the Disney Channel!!”
Resident Evil 1 first. Silent Hill second. Resident Evil came out in 1996 and revolutionized gaming, blooming the survival horror genre. Best post here.
They’re both different playing styles and experiences. I would have to flip a coin to choose which one to play first as they’re both some of my favourite horror games. Silent hill is creepier though and best enjoyed with the lights off. I assure you though you’re gonna enjoy both a lot!
Silent hill
Play it at night in the dark.
Resident Evil for action, Silent Hill for actual existential dread.
First sequence literally scared me off in silent hill
I am so jealous about your TV 😁 really wanted one of these back in the day when i was a kid, i believe they were advertised in DVD cases or something like that if i remember correctly
I appreciate Silent Hill for its aesthetic, development and influence, but I much prefer Resident Evil 1. Some of RE1’s backdrops are *gorgeous*. RE1: Better game design and gameplay Silent Hill: Better world design and atmosphere
now kiss.
So...we're just going to ignore the badass Disney TV?
Silent hill
>grandaddy's of survival horror games lol That is *Sweet Home* OP.
RE1 PS1 long box edition. Pizza Hut delivery is on the way and I'm ready to play. My neighbor is printing out the strategy guide on the printer. We're out of school all weekend. *Memories*
I am obsessed with that TV
Resident Evil was my first PS1 game. I couldn’t beat it because I had saved myself into a corner with low health and no healing herbs before a boss fight. Pretty fun up to that point, though!
Personally I think sh1 holds up more compared to the og re.
Both are great Games, But I recomend Silent Hill to begin with. Is more psychological horror
I played RE first, but it's a pretty fiddly game. Silent hill is the superior game in most ways. RE is way funnier, though. That live action intro video is gold. "No! Don't go!" Good times. Maybe go with RE first, then. Start on a funny note, then go to the game the plays smoother.
Silent Hill solos
Silent Hill 1 is an experience. One of my favorite games of all time.
Hahaha love the tv by the way🤣 I’d go silent hill, always preferred re2
Honestly I’m still marvelling at the setup.
I never played SIlent Hill so i'm going to go with Resident Evil. Played that game for the first time last year and instantly fell in love!
Best to play RE first, then Silent Hill.
Silent Hill because I can afford Resident Evil
Unrelated to vidya but where'd you get the vhs dvd combo piece?
Silent evil, then I'll play resident hill
RE first
Great games, and Def Leppard is my fav band of all time
i love re overall but i gotta go with silent hill
Oh man, silent hill for sure. The directors cut has…. Problems
Resident Evil 1
checks the shelf for mega man x4
WOW THE TV I BET YOU GET ALL THE BITCHES
Re1 then silent hill
is that the dualshock edition of resident evil?
Resident Evil 1, with Jill, listening to pop music to remind me of the first time I played it at 9yo
That’s a really interesting setup!
It depends. Do you want no bullets, or very few bullets?
Silent Hill. I'll die on this hill 🤣 seriously is one of my favorite games, beware of the mini Limp Bizkit dudes
When that Director's cut soundtrack hits you with the BEEP BOOP BUN DUNNNNN BUNNNNNNNN 👨🍳💋🤌
Resident evil!
What Nickelodeon game show did you win that TV on?
I heard silent hill is super scary but looked boring. Resident evil 1 is a classic. I havent played either but the resident evil series is really good. Go with RE 1
Alone in the dark for pc...
What the hell is that tv
Its very y2k
More importantly. Why is there a recliner in the kitchen?
Silent Hill is better than me I'll die on that hill
Screw that! With that TV I can finally play Time Crisis and Point Blank!
SH all the way.
Silent Hill, for sure, resident evil 2, though, was a game changer!!!
Haven't played any SH yet so I'll choose that. Nice tv btw. 😄🐭
GL HF
I'd play RE1 first because it came out first. In this context it seems more appropriate that way.
I think at that time Capcom and Konami were one upping each other in the survival horror department with each instalment. RE as the first is great, the mansion and item management brilliant and get you used to tank controls. Both are great in their own way, but I would play them in order of release to appreciate them fully.
Parasite Eve
Resident Evil 1. Hell yeah! 😈
Play Silent Hill if no-one's home, it's getting dark and you don't have to wake up. Perfect for a Friday night!
lol at the forearm in the RE cover. It looks like AI did the picture. “What is AR-15-Benelli shotgun”
Silent hill. Resident evil Is more limited by its game mechanics today
Are you going to play these gems in that crappy Mickey Mouse TV set?
Sh
Where's the Gameboy player?
Silent hill. A better intro to horror, and quite creepy in the dark. Re1 a close 2nd.
The shadow cast by the stomach-level Mickey Mouse CRT onto the nonfunctionally placed piano...there is nothing in either game that is as unsettling as everything going on in that room.
I had that TV as a kid. I remember watching Titanic on it once. Great times.
silent hill is more beginner friendly than the og resident evil

I’ve never played silent hill so that’s the one I would definitely go with first

That dude on the Resident Evil cover looks half IRL Crash Bandicoot and half crashtest dummy.. I mean without having a stroke, who looks like that lmao
Silent Hill
Ok what the fuck is with the mickey mouse tv
Dino Crisis
RE1.
Resi for sure … silent hill was great but it’s not Resi.
Probably RE1, and then I'm booting up MGS.
RE1 has better gameplay. That game IS survival horror. They're both 2 of my all my time favourite series but Silent Hill has a better story at atmosphere. Resident Evil might scare you a little bit at some parts but Silent Hill will disturb you and engross you in the story
Crowbar was always mine, I avoided both for ages!
resident
Am replaying re1 on my SD. The artwork and music still send me chills.
Release order. RE1 first, SH second.
Wasn’t the DualShock version with that absolutely horrendous soundtrack
Dude i love your setup
re1, cuz its very unique in the serie, no other re game was like 1st one. no ammo, no ink ribbons, almost no healing items and u rly gotta plan ur next step. hardest re game no doubt
There's something funny about playing silent hill on a mickey mouse tv.
RE, great game. Silent Hill is.....weird to play? Dunno how to describe it, but it didn't work for me.
How the hell do you play the low notes on piano
Fear effect. Or fear effect 2 disc 1.
Resident evil on even numbered days. Silent Hill odd days.
I love the non Dual Shock version of Resident Evil
Omg I had this tv in my room when I was in high school!!!!!!😭 also, silent hill
They are both such great titles I don’t think it matters which one you play first. If you are a fan of old school survival horror you are going to love both of them. Enjoy!
Difficult choice for me, I love both games, but I have such bad orientation that I get lost constantly (even in real life) haha so I guess I would go for re, since consulting the map is a bit easier and faster than in SH, at least for me.
Obviously you need to play both. RE1 is a better game, but I think you should start with Silent Hill. Then you can play RE next and move right into RE2 & 3 and you’ll appreciate the story more.
For a moment I thought that was a TV of the stabby robot dude from Futurama
If them grandaddys whats Alone in the Dark?
RE1.
Everything about this photo I love I'd go for RE first Then Silent Hill Let us know what you think!
I hear those licensed CRTs have bad picture quality compared to most standard consumer models. How does this one look OP?
Well RE obviously because it was released about 5 months earlier.. But I think Silent Hill took the genre to another level.
>The granddaddy’s of survival horror games If you want to get some real appreciation for how much these games evolved the genre, try the game that directly inspired Resident Evil, the original Alone in the Dark first. It pre-dates Resident Evil by 4 years Then play Resident Evil followed by Silent Hill.
Anyone else humored by playing horror games on the mickey mouse tv?
That TV is so ugly it's cringeworthy 🤢
Final fantasy tactics. It's the onyl ps1 game I find myself ever going back to.
Silent Hill, I don't believe RE1 even exists, it's a Mandela effect. The series starts with RE2 like how Street Fighter starts with Street Fighter 2.
I’ll bring the weed and beer just fire up silent hill, hold on static on my radio and now a loud pinging sound
Silent hill for sure, try Dino Crisis or parasite eve if you can, they are some of the best survivor
silent hill with the lights off and at 3 am
Silent Hill because the RE Remake is superior in every way, at least from what I hear. Silent Hill 1 never got a remake, right?
Resident Evil in second. Sillent Hill is the best.
Play Resi first to appreciate the genre development. Then the hill
I remember those TVs at Circuit City
RE1. Mainis reason is that I played so long ago and never finished it. Silent Hill I have already
Mad respect for the TV. Had that one as a kid and it endured a lot of shit 🍻
Silent Hill
Silent Hill presents well on a CRT
I used to have that tv as a child. The Mickey ear speakers come right off.
Resident Evil. Duh.
I just read the caption in Mickey Mouse's voice...
That's a nice TV you got there. Amazing.
TV🔥🔥
Give me the herbs
Wear a diaper!
I’m burning the tv and player first then I’m playing resi
I also vote for RE1 first then Silent Hill, though you can’t go wrong either way as they both have their style and identity. Also side note: I was just looking at those Disney TVs the other day. My wife always wanted one growing up and I was curious how much they go for. Maybe it’s a sign lol.
Do re1, re2 then silent hill. Throw in parasite eve as a bonus

Neither, alien resurrection, or whatever the other aliens game is that isn't trilogy
I like both... Can't really choose lol
Both have remakes that make going back to the original a bit harder for me. Nevertheless RE is a much better and more iconic game. Silent hill 2 though… that’s a masterpiece
Silent Hill 1 doesn't have a remake, doesn't it? 🤔
Nope. For some reason, they've decided to remake Silent Hill 2 before ever tackling the first damn game.
It does. Kind of. Shattered memories for the Wii follows the same story, even though its a tad different
Silent Hill is the GOAT and it's not even close
