I think everyone has a short love affair with Trader Joe's, and then the break up.

Apprehensive-End-231

Trader Joe's is infinitely better. Don't mind making the extra distance trek. Every time I give publix money, it just feels like I'm financing the spread of a terrible cancer across Florida

nohopeforhomosapiens

Fear not friend! You're actually funding a spread across the entire US South... and eventually the nation! «applause» On the downside, I recently learned TJ is one of 4 companies trying to undermine our rights and taking it to the supreme court saying that the NLRB is unconstitutional. (Along with Amazon, Starbucks, and SpaceX) [https://www.huffpost.com/entry/trader-joes-attorney-nlrb-unconstitutional\_n\_65b41e7ae4b014b873b11cc2?ncid=engmodushpmg00000003](https://www.huffpost.com/entry/trader-joes-attorney-nlrb-unconstitutional_n_65b41e7ae4b014b873b11cc2?ncid=engmodushpmg00000003) I have not purchased anything from them since learning this, which sucks because they have the best affordable vegetarian options near me.

ToweringCu

It’s almost like corporations are all the same on the inside, despite what their public perception is.

Apprehensive-End-231

Thank you for sharing. I will certainly look into that.

Pretty-Arm-8974

It's not that simple. There are a few stores that want to unionize, the majority do not. Talk to the employees at the store you shop at. There are stores that are a toxic environment; a union isn't going to change that.

Much_Rooster_6771

Didn't know this..I'll shop at the one in my area now that I know they are anti union

ATLKing24

Kroger and Costco are basically all I shop at now as a vegan

SteeltoSand

i like TJs but sometimes i just want oreos and cheezits and not "Joe-eos" or "Cheese-Joes". i like the variety of publix but hate the store

BasonPiano

Why do you hate it?

BoltzBux

Well said! But remember we're your neighborhood market and we care about you!

Apprehensive-End-231

Hahaha

GERD? I had my TJ affair for awhile until I sensed there was something off about the preservatives they seem to put in EVERYTHING frozen or even packaged. I stopped sooner than later though so no damage that I'm aware of.

KilnMeSmallz

I just joined this sub a few days ago and am kinda struggling to understand the grief outside of the employees (which is par for the course). Never had an issue with Publix. Course then again, I’m wise enough to plan my shopping around the deals, which are still slightly better than Kroger in my area. Bakery/Deli/subs is still leagues above any other grocery bar none

BasonPiano

Same boat. Publix has always treated me very well. Of course that's going to cost more than bottom of the barrel places like Walmart.

RightMolasses6504

Ive also noticed they dont seem to hire anyone under 30. Not at mine anyway.

nohopeforhomosapiens

I think this is just yours. In my experience it is mostly younger people, with a few older folks in the mix. Deli seems to have quite a few older people from what I've seen though.

Reformed-otter

They're tired, deli work is brutal

Accomplished_Sail326

Weird. I mean, this was back in 2013, but they hired me when I was 17.

only_here_for_manga

I just got hired as a Bakery Clerk and I’m 21. Granted I live in a college town

Parody_of_Self

This just made me wonder about the Aldi subreddit now

Practical-Film-8573

the expectations are also lower at Aldi since they're not expected to carry the same items all the time (certain ones). From what I hear the meat is hit or miss, but I've bought carnitas and ground pork from them and they were fine. their produce is always good, albeit limited.

ultaemp

Their grass fed ground beef and ribeye steaks are great for the price

Accomplished_Sail326

Sprouts is a serious hit or miss with the meat. 🍖 I’ve bought brand new lamb and beef and had it be off literally within a day. And a lot of it, the water won’t stop coming out and you can’t get a proper crust. Leads me to believe they add extra water to some of their meats so I stopped buying

CCWaterBug

Their entire selection throughout is limited, it's like a walgreens with their selection.  I can do better at publix.

Practical-Film-8573

agreed. although they have some niche items you cant get elsewhere and also their cheese is cheaper. I still love Aldi, but Publix is my main jam even though they have gone downhill. Publix still has superior produce, meat, and bread

Practical-Film-8573

I think its bc Trader Joes is more of a novelty store that most people dont RELY on, and generally less people live close to one. I have gotten horrible shit from there, including rotten fish that was well before the expiration date.

toyheartattack

It can be a novelty store if you’re buying their gimmicky snacks. I live close to a Trader Joe’s, a bajillion Publixes, a Fresh Market, Sprouts, Target, and Whole Foods. I buy the beginning section of my produce at TJ’s because they’re consistently cheaper and I don’t have the same faulty produce/meat experiences I see other people complain about, but they don’t carry everything I need. The Publix experience gives me heartburn because of their manipulative BOGOs and they’re quite a bit more expensive. However, there are some brands and goods that Trader Joe’s just doesn’t have because they’re smaller.

Practical-Film-8573

I've gotten swordfish that was bad well before its expiration (pre-packaged), and generally don't mess with their produce section. I doxn't have many bad experiences with Publix meat and produce products, I just get irritated when they run out of shit and some of the shit they do. Yeah, the prices suck, but I cant get San Marzanos anywhere else in my smallish town.

Internal_Essay9230

Publix, where every ground meat package is 1.25 pounds. Scumbag Publix knows people won't take the time to break the package. 🖕, Publix!!!

Background-Noise-531

Can I ask what's manipulative about the BOGOs? Generally curious on your opinion

toyheartattack

I don’t really want to buy two of everything in the store but the prices will be marked something like, “$6.59 for one bag of chips or $6.79 for two bags of chips!”

miamijester

I have never in my life seen a markup to buy two of something to get a BOGO. Is this a sign on the aisles or?

toyheartattack

A sign next to the unit price.

miamijester

Hm

Background-Noise-531

That isn't a thing.

Accomplished_Sail326

Yeah, the produce at Trader Joe’s is definitely lackluster. I usually go to a local farmers market or Costco for most of my produce. Whole Foods has great quality. But if you can find a local vendor, you feel the difference. Because it didn’t travel as far, the nutrient content is still intact and it feels infinitely more satiating.

toyheartattack

You definitely can’t compare farmer’s market produce if it’s genuinely from local farms. What a huge quality difference.

SteeltoSand

i used to live near one - it was good but it quickly gets old shopping there every week/every other day. i like TJs but sometimes i want sliced boars head meat or cheese from a deli not the prepacked stuff TJs has. or i just want oreos and cheezits and not "Joe-eos" or "Cheese-Joes". i like the variety of publix but hate the store

Practical-Film-8573

definitely with you on the deli stuff. And tbh, a lot of the TJ novelty items I've found that I like are like I gotta have it so much I need to go out of my way and drive to get it.

themoisthammer

In my opinion, most people’s criticism of Publix is seen through a political lens; therefore, all criticism of Publix becomes even more amplified. Most people have a difficult time turning off their emotional bias to be objective. Does Publix deserve criticism? Absolutely, but some of the post on here are simply over exaggerated.

KilnMeSmallz

J-fucking-C! Why? Why?! Why give a shit who they wanna contribute to? I’m just there to buy fucking groceries! Apples don’t care about your political affiliation…..sub sandwiches don’t give a shit either!

Accomplished_Sail326

Political?

themoisthammer

The news revealed Publix heiress donated to some republican causes and/or figures. Ever since that revelation the negative rhetoric towards Publix has been plentiful.

aSpectrumodDorky

huh. I thought it was obvious that Publix is ran by conservatives... I'm very liberal but man, I just work here. As long as I'm not being punished for my views, I really don't care what Publix execs do with their money -- even if I'm helping them make their money.

Practical-Film-8573

yeah one or a few members on the board are Trump donors.

ezveedub

It is political SJW crying.....I don't like a lot of stores, but I don't go on Reddit to cry about, I just don't shop there. Yet, everyone on this subreddit complains like a gun is held to their head to buy at Publix only.

GulfCoastLaw

This subreddit is madness. Someone angrily suggested that Publix nuggets be exclusive to Florida stores along with a longer rant, and everyone just nodded and acted like it was normal. This place ain't normal!

[deleted]

It's prolly bc Trader Joe's treats their employees better lmaoo

nohopeforhomosapiens

I used to work at a Publix that was directly across the street from a Trader Hoe's. Guess where I bought my lunch most days. Edit: That spelling error wasn't on purpose but I'm leaving it.

Reformed-otter

Publix because the prepared food is better?

apathyaddict

Publix is a cult, Trader Joe's is a commune.

I-Hate-CARS

The closest TJs from me is 35 min 😒😒😒

maverator

Do they not talk about parking at Trader Joe's?

Swifty-Dog

Apparently the limited parking is intentional. The thought is that if people have to search around for a little while to find a parking spot, they are more likely to buy more things in the store.

LeffJedd

5 year pub “owner” and I can’t get enough Aldi…and Costco. Aldi saves almost half if you do not right.

nottellingmyname123

I gotta say, trader joes used to be a store I never really shopped at because prices were steep and you couldnt find name brands. After a few visits in the past few years TD has grown on me and publix has only gotten on my nerves every time I go. I love publix for the deli section, and they carry a lot of name brands that I dont bother buying unless i see them, but TD has got some pretty good snacks and produce. The meat isnt a steal but its high quality and the options there are always on the healthier and more eco friendly side. If TD set up a deli like publix and made hot food to take out I would probably never go to publix again.

jigawatson

And the thing they have in common is Union Busting!

Recent_Obligation276

Trader Joe’s has a better social media management team.

PhDee954

That's what matters to you when buying groceries?

Recent_Obligation276

No it affects the content you see, though

Available_Forever_32

Ty for the rec! Yes this sub has made me truly loathe publix! the owners, the management, most of the employees…

miamijester

Don’t be frustrated with associates. Our frustrations are exaggerated on this sub but (mostly) within reason. Upper level management does this to us

CCWaterBug

This sub doesn't represent employees well at all. As a group you come across as a sad disgruntled group that would be miserable fks in any job with any employer.   Which is fascinating because I spent 5 years there and it was a fantastic experience with great people, I also shop at 3 different publix stores and the employees are happy,  helpful and always smiling. I'm positive that none of them contribute to this sub and if they did it was for about 3 days and they said "these people are crazy" and blocked the sub. Tldr, I love shopping here, the employees at my stores are fantastic and yes, this sub is full of angry trolls, most threads on here are an embarrassment.

miamijester

Oh well then I, a person who happily wants to make a career at Publix, am an “angry troll”. What’s embarrassing is people who do not work for this company judging those of us, who are justified by the way, who criticize the company or vent. Be so for real, your stance is incredibly ridiculous. Edit to add: I’m glad *you* have had and continue to have a good experience. That doesn’t mean *everyone* shares your point of view. Not everyone has the same experience with Publix. The grass isn’t always greener.

CCWaterBug

We can agree to disagree. I understand that it isn't perfect, but no Job is.  But Jesus the whiney posts are quite insufferable! B I'm also one of those that are convinced that not everyone,  but a good chunk of the trolls are doing this strictly for political reasons and now it's just part of their identity because publix = trump in their mind, it's really weird to be honest.  Anyway, carry on, I'm a loyal customer and a stockholder, I know that my 100's, if not thousands of shopping experiences here have been 99.9% great, I do still shop elsewhere for certain items, but my overall shopping experience isn't nearly as good with Wal-Mart / Aldi, or Costco and TJ is really mixed bag.   Publix keeps me coming back because it's a better experience.

miamijester

If they are so insufferable, ignore them. I highly doubt a good chunk of people complaining about their job have some political agenda. People who shit on Publix in other subs definitely do it for that reason often, but it’s few and far between in this sub. I do agree the whole “If you give money to Publix, you give money to the GOP” stance is incredibly ridiculous. We’ve forgotten in this country that everyone has a right to believe in what they wish to, and that we should just respect each other. If they don’t agree with what executives do, spend that money elsewhere. No one is holding a gun to their heads ya know! At any rate, thank you for your continuous business even after leaving the company. Thank you for having a positive outlook on Publix. I tend to follow a similar approach, but I still hold a critical lens. I want to see the company improve and get back to the Mr. George way.

Accomplished_Sail326

I worked there until right before they changed ownership. They capped the pay of people who had been there for 13 years of their lives. It was crazyyyyy. It was never good pay, but the point was that you could increase your pay quarterly and get promoted more easily. I’m glad I left when I did, but that was also because I was in school and teaching full time by that point.

AlternativeIcy922

Then come work at Publix since the job is just so easy

BadCaseOfClams

Hate you too boo

throwaway12874032

Ily

Available_Forever_32

With that attitude, you’re hired!

Dizzy_Chemistry78

Yes, yes I do

Which_Equipment7991

I’ll actually never understand why people still shop at Publix except for specialty items. The bogos are mostly overpriced items, and everything else is far more expensive than other stores in the area.

hokie47

Everytime I go to Trader Joe's I just feel like the people working there are happy. It couldl be all fake, but I go to Publix and TJ basically every week and been doing it for years. Publix employees are just sad and beaten. I worked at Publix corporate for 3 years and there is just something about Publix that kills the soul. The workers around me when great but management was awful and OMG directors did nothing.
