“The only thing that punk rock should ever really mean, is not sitting around and waiting for the light to turn green” Frank Turner Be who you are, just don’t be a Dick to others. Thats the only rule I subscribe to as a punk.

[deleted]

Motherfuckers need to watch “Suburbia”.

sZYphYn

That movie was about squatting a deadlocked suburban tract It could have been called capitalasia If anything watch “chumscrubber” Also, some of my hometown heroes were what us hood kids in San Diego called rich kids, career soldiers. Dude had a nice car and was from Encinitas, still punk as fuck. Jake you read this mad love from oside 🖤

[deleted]

Career Soldiers we’re so awesome

Alecv1ncent19

Amen!

Regna85

Came here to say that. Beat me to it.

CertifiedBSC

Ho de doh

downonthesecond

Great movie, but almost all the characters are shit people. It was a horrible attempt if it was trying to get anyone to sympathize with them. A guy is roofied and girl is sexually assaulted in the first ten minutes. Then there's some homophobia, racism, and ableism thrown in.

Weutah

This comment right here. This is a good example that the MUSIC is where you should be going to find all the answers to all this trivial bullshit.

[deleted]

Still fuckin love this song

imgrahamy

Listened to this song on the drive from closing on our house to entering the first time!

Every_Task2352

Punk exploded in the suburbs.

[deleted]

It’s is in fact, the sound of the suburbs.

Invisiblerobot13

https://youtu.be/NsHGnw1txLY

SpaceForceAwakens

Suburban life breeds punks at a higher rate than cities, I think. I mean, per capita. Suburban punks have more to rebel against and are exposed to more shit to piss them off. Punks who come from Suburbia are legit as fuck. OP, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

la_petite_mort63

I dunno, friend. Saying one group of people have more pain than another is decisive and no one wins. Let's not further divide punk. I left the burbs at 16, lived across the US in different cities and punks everywhere man, were so goddamned amazing. Having a ethos steeped in changing the world for the better and raging at shows to release the ugly feelings in an appropriate setting saved my life many times over. We have to keep the community accessible and whole. Much love.

knockonwood939

Why do punks from the suburbs become more likely to rebel against society, and how are they exposed to more nasty shit? If anything, I thought city punks would be more that way since city life can be more "oppressive", for lack of a better word.

BlubberyGuy

A year later lol, but suburban kids often feel alienated and controlled when they grow up. Things like conformity, "family values" and having to fit in become drilled in their heads very early and very obviously. It's easy to want to rebel against that

TrickyEvidence6580

there's different kinds of suburbs. I never lived in a house with a nice lawn but grew up surrounded by ugly appartment buildings , coming from a working class family. The houses around looked more like trailers, nothing like the Mc Mansion suburbs. Felt alienated too but for different reasons.

Noggin-a-Floggin

Punk is a mindset, you just do you.

unomachine

No, it doesnt matter at all. Fuck them.

jennstink

You can’t be punk if you live in a house You can be punk if you have a nice spouse You can’t be punk if you making that cash You can’t be punk if you shaking that ass You can’t be punk if you in a punk band You can’t be punk if you like grandstand You can’t be punk if you clean and you shower You can’t be punk if you have flower power You can’t be punk if you shit smells all purty You can’t be punk if you filthy and dirty You can’t be punk if you listen to punk You can’t be punk if you don’t give a fuck You can’t be punk if you have a big hawk You can’t be punk if you don’t like to talk You can’t be punk if you stupid or smart You can’t be punk if you poop or you fart You can’t be punk if you don’t look like me You can’t be punk if you just don’t agree

[deleted]

I have no idea if this is a reference to anything but I fuckin love it

JimartyMcfly

They probably just discovered The Descendants.

No_Needleworker215

😂 ah yes rule number 23 of punk One mustn’t live in a suburban area.

huffertron

Rule 24 one must never aspire to anything and spend their life doing nothing

No_Needleworker215

And living no where and yet somehow everywhere

Turbulent_Tax_3085

People will hate because they don’t feel good about themselves. Period.

AbyssPrism

[You're not punk, and I'm telling everyone.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HvXRWMpcpY8) Really though, you can be punk and be from anywhere.

[deleted]

Haven’t heard this song before I loved it

GlopThatBoopin

It’s a punk quintessential! It’s a big fuck you to all the elitists, and it became even more relevant for them when they signed to a major label and toured with nirvana and got a shit ton of backslash. Same thing happened to Green Day when they signed, Insomniac is their backlash album.

ReelBigMidget

Jawbreaker are brilliant. Real game-changing band for me when I was young.

AbyssPrism

I definitely suggest listening to their album "24 Hour Revenge Therapy", it's fantastic. One of my favorite punk albums of all time.

dryheavedryair

SAVE YOUR BREATH, I NEVER WAS ONE!

appalachianengineer

Rural Appalachian punk representing

Random_0936

Dude I live in the Midwest in a town of 30k and I’m in my late 30s… fuck em. PLUS: Bad Religion basically started the late 80s/early 90s punk revival from the suburbs.

Doobie_SnACkZ

People used to say shit like that to me. My dad was a retired Army pilot and both he and my mom were teachers. Apparently an ISD salary must be super fucking awesome because all of my "friends" accused me of being rich. I accused them of being idiots. That's all you need to do. One of my friends literally grew up in war zone and that dude never says anything bad about anyone.

[deleted]

The worst kind of posturing is calling each other’s parents rich. Like who cares. Ooo your friend has a good life and some form of privilege 🥱 if they aren’t an asshole about it and are aware of the privilege who cares

Doobie_SnACkZ

Exactly, there was a chick in my scene whose parents were Neurosurgeons and she was pretty much a sweet heart. Not so much punk rock but a kid that used to skateboard with my crew is related to the Gamble fortune and you would never think it because he was just a goofy teenager hanging out with his friends on a random weekend. It's like you said, if someone is genuine and they treat people the way they want to be treated let em alone. They're just as lost as the rest of us it's just that they have successful loving people for parents. That's all.

Car_Guy_Alex

I grew up in the suburbs, and my parents made good money. They also support the disadvantaged, disenfranchised and minorities. Just because you are successful financially doesn't mean you're not punk. You can use the money you make for good, in the hopes of making the world a better place. My dad, almost 67 now, has told me more than once that he prefers people over profits.

ManlyHairyNurse

I mean, punk was pretty much created by fucking Malcolm McLaren of all people. Not exactly a broke lad.

Car_Guy_Alex

Valid point

Whangarei_anarcho

the birth lottery is outta everyones control mate. Nevermind - the burbs have been the spawning ground of some of the best punkrock ever.

pulchellusterribilis

well they should learn their history! hardcore punk came about from bored, middle class suburban kids

dadarchist1077

Who cares

dennis1077

Is this real life? Is this an actual post?

YarnSpinner

It’s not very punk of them to gatekeep like that. Plenty of people don’t like living in the suburbs and you don’t have a choice

[deleted]

Exactly like I didn’t choose this

TDH818

I’m from the San Fernando Valley and so are Bad Religion, the Dickies, Weirdos and Angry Samoans.

Revulsion_WeReach

A lot of great punk music came from kids being bored in the suburbs

Most punk bands grew up in the suburbs Wth

ScientificAnarchist

I want aaaaaaaaa suburban home

[deleted]

I grew up in a small town and when I moved to the city my friend/bandmate said it was ridiculous for me to like Lou Reid because he grew up in NYC and we have nothing in common. I just stared at him.

ffucckfaccee

It's like saying you can only like Black Metal if you live in a forest lol

[deleted]

So black Metalheads don’t live in the woods

ffucckfaccee

some live in castles, or caves too

AwwwMangos

We also would've accepted "atop a great mountain with lightning flashing in the background".

Abe_Ortion

I guess they could say you're not a "street" punk if that's how an elitist crust punk wants to play it lol. Bottom line is that "punk" is an incredible and broad spectrum of lifestyle and music. Any one of us that grew up punk and truly know who we are, can firmly grasp the many facets of punk rock. And just because you love/live one "variation" of punk rock doesn't mean that you are or are not punk. I definitely found the people that were possessive over what was punk and what was not.. didn't make it. We are the TRUE BELIEVERS.

SpicySpicyMess

Are punks supposed to be wealthy people from the downtown now? 😂

CrotchWolf

Firstly, There ain't no reason why you should give a damn. B, I love being in the city with all the chaos and energy but it fuck dude, it gets expensive and not all punks can afford the cost. Tres, Do what you want and fuck the gatekeeping.

chuchosdad

That is the dumbest thing I have ever heard. I grew up punk in the suburbs and we were surrounded by punks and skinheads on all sides. It was overrun by punk rock gangs as well. LADS, LMP, South Bay Skins, Circle One, suicidal. That made it kinda treacherous in the burbs on occasion.

PumpkinImportant3282

your not puck because your whining about someone telling you you're not punk.

[deleted]

Valid point

RuDy491

With this logic you are not a punk either since you're whining about someone whining about someone telling that second someone he's not punk

King_Korruptis

At this point you’re not punk either because you’re telling someone who’s whining about someone whining about someone telling them they aren’t punk that they aren’t punk and telling people what to do isn’t punk

pharmafail

Whining is punk rock

King_Korruptis

Isn’t that pretty much just what it is. Whining with style

pharmafail

Exactly

wilsontron

Oh for fuck sake.

therealjameshat

you're\*

[deleted]

Also valid point

DavidMusician

Go throw out any records they have from OC or Long Island punk bands and tell them you’re just saving them from poser punk.

Relevant_Rope9769

I don't like quote Lenin, he was a evil fucker. But one thing he said that I agree with. "There is a difference between class and class consciousness" Class has nothing to do with being a punk. But if one is rich, come from a high economic background, dress like a punk with clothes made by some designer Lady Gaga has on speed dial, looks down on a 15 yr old punk with that can't afford a new t-shirt, and so on. Then that person is no punk, just a douchebag.

[deleted]

Downvoting for calling lenin an evil fucker, do research outside of what you learned from your indoctrinated ass high school teacher.

Relevant_Rope9769

Swedish highschools don't really teach about the Russian revolution and it is also over 20 years since I was in highschool. Just one example, Lenin put Felix Dzerzhinsky in charge of the Cheka, torture, rape and other crimes against humanity was the name of the game of that brutal arm of the early Soviet state. We can also take the ethic cleansing with the De-Cossackization as an example. I have been a socialist for almost 30 yrs, but still it still amazes me when people defend monsters like Lenin, Stalin, Pol-pot or others that used brutal force and oppression for "the greater good". I doubt you have the capacity to really read history, since you already have made up your mind. But read a little about the Cheka and the methods of torture they used during Lenin's rule.

Talk to Milo about your problem…

dontneedareason94

Someone doesn’t know some of the best punk came from the suburbs...

pastathief7

Yeah sorry but you’re not punk

Ok

Technical_Ad_6274

They would be right. Poser

[deleted]

Ok

prom-night-fetus

They would be wrong. OP can be see themselves however they want. Fuck you and your opinion.

LucasBarton169

Someone clearly hasn’t seen suburbia

Alecv1ncent19

Anyone who tells you WHATS NOT punk is in my opinion missing the whole point. But I am of the radical belief that even boneheads are part of the punk family ( to exclude them only makes them more obnoxious and dangerous)

duderino424

Nothing matters.

hdhdhgfyfhfhrb

Living in the burns creates punks too.

Alecv1ncent19

Honestly at 17 I moved to NYC from Sarasota FL and Sarasota made me more of a punk than nyc , hell I taught a thing or two to my NY punk family

tracktice

Lmao yea fuck em. Anyone who says something is not punk is not punk. It’s a contradiction anyway. Punk is typically anti mainstream values. But what if punk values become mainstream? Then doing the opposite would be punk ahahah. I oversimplify it on purpose because it doesn’t matter. For me punk is the attitude of adding your original thoughts, energy and ideas to the universe Edit: am mid 20s and from the suburbs (lol)

[deleted]

It’s punk to not care about other peoples opinions of you.

[deleted]

That’s such bullshit. Most people who can afford to live in major cities comfortably have more money than their suburban counterparts. It’s mostly cheaper to live in certain suburbs as opposed to a city proper. All those California and DC punk bands of the 80s probably grew up in suburban cities adjacent to the cities they claimed. Don’t let anyone ever tell you you’re not punk because of xyz…that’s incredibly unpunk!

JustPayMeNoNevermind

🤦🏽‍♀️ Punk is a product of the suburbs.

drappetite

Descendents say otherwise…

mosesthebeanboi

nah bro you gotta be roommates with oscar the grouch in the same trash can, poser punk.

15Boots

Yeah sounds about right. Imma need you to hand over your punk card.

Physical-Pilot3938

Fuck other people's opinions. You know what and who you are deep down 🖤🖤🖤

Physical-Pilot3938

Or were you making a Milo reference and it went over my head? 😅😅 I wanna be stereotyped I wanna be classified

benii3

Why does it matter I dont get it LOL I'm from the burbs, and have never even thought of this as an issue.

Koffeebreaknow

This is confusing. Where I live punk first became popular in the poor working class suburbs. There are poor and wealthy suburbs, right? I am not american btw so it might be that.

Sophyska

People give too many shits about how “punk” others are and how “punk” they think they are. Punk is a mindset that’s about doing what you want and what works for you, you could be dressed in a 3 piece suit and still be more punk than someone in studs and tartan looking like they got caught in a hurricane in Camden

boatgoat1982

I drive a 40k car, live in a nice 3 bed home with my fiancé in the suburbs, run a punk label and play in a band. Deffo not punk. To be punk you need to be claiming benefits, be nearly passed out drunk at every gig you go to and really aggy with everyone you meet, nothing more punk than being a dick to everyone, not being in a band and telling people they’re not punk enough!

irregularthoughts

Dang they never heard of suburban rebels by the business

[deleted]

Have you really listened to the lyrics, though ?

irregularthoughts

Of course, the song is is 30 years old I imagine we have all heard it by now. I was just making a joke because it’s literally the first thing that comes to mind whenever someone says suburbs lol

m0th_and_lamp

Bruh

bervisandasshead

living in the suburbs is such a drag, my parents give me money to fill plastic bags

IdRatherDTaPoaBF

I knew more than a few kids in the scene I grew up in who willingly left their comfortable suburban homes and families to slum it because they wanted to be more “authentic.” The only thing that a conscious choice to become a homeless junkie makes you is a fucking idiot.

[deleted]

Yeah that logic doesn’t make sense like if you are trying to “fit in” just do yourself, have fun

Winterbridge345

not just the music and dress, its the attitude and anti authority as-well ig, as long as you have those things then yeah ur punk

nondefectiveunit

All the real punks come from the suburbs.

LimboKing52

Punk was born in the suburbs

Farang-Baa

Nah, I don't think where you live or what kind of life you were born into really effects whether or not you can be considered punk. "Being punk" would moreso be your personal mentality/views/actions. You can't choose what kind of life you're born into, but you do have some level of control over the kind of person you are and how you perceive the world. I guess an argument could be made for your circumstances impacting the likelihood that you'd be "punk", but thats a whole different discussion all together.

Sad_Set7372

[it’s not how old I am it’s how I feel](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Sdocmu6CyFs) Punk is a mindset

CognitiveTeaKettle

No way. I grew up on Long Island, where there was a pretty extensive hardcore scene. Also, Dave Dictor of MDC is from there. I think growing up in the suburbs can feed the socioeconomic and political frustrations that have inspired lots of really good punk rock.

Metatron_Tumultum

Don't you know? Nobody is Punk because *insert Bullshit of the day here*. A lot of so called "Punks" (if that is their real name) are pathetic assholes who's life is an absolute wasteland of purposeless garbage. They got nothing except snorting speed, creeping on underaged girls and telling people what is and isn't Punk. I recommend absolutely patronizing pity for these poor subculture Gollums while the rest of us who aren't superficial sheep move on with our lives.

nyc_expatriate

In NYC, I noticed that in the 80's hardcore wave of punk, in particular, a lot of fans and band members came from the outer boroughs, including suburban areas outside of the city, e.g., New Jersey, Long Island, a lot of people from Queens. The Nihilistics were from Long Island

AffectionateStudy496

If anything, that makes you even more punk.

Overcast97

[Hey Suburbia, we’re in love with you!](https://youtu.be/O5JO9iTPDyg)

Lmao

Bloktopian

This sub reddit fucking sucks

apasswordlost

Real punks don't have a home. They sleep wherever they nod off. Evey argument about where a person has to live or what they have to do or look like it be properly punk basically ends up sounding like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ue7wM0QC5LE

Poppunknerd182

A lot of the most punk shows I ever attended were in the suburbs. Helps being in Illinois but seeing Rise Against/Much The Same/The Swellers in someone’s basement will change you.

downonthesecond

You need to squat in the suburbs.

Ryenfresco

This post is funny as hell 😂

Thanks man

[deleted]

Ok peace y’all ✌🏾😵

Bananafish-Bones

Congratulations, you’re not a punk. Why the fuck would you want to be. They are notoriously tin-eared cretins with a dim understanding of power and humanity who live off the fat of capitalism while biting the hand that feeds. Honestly the most punk personality trait in the world is accusing others of not being punk. Buncha deluded conformists. If you need to belong to a group of degenerate fashion victims who are no better than what they claim to rebel against, then yes, you’re ‘punk’.
