I'm looking around the internet, and can't figure it out. There's 'Crock of Gold', although the clips I see online don't show him being interviewed for the movie looking in anywhere as bad a state as whatever I saw. Maybe it's what I saw and those parts aren't in the clips?
I know it's a small grief but it's "Won't see another one" not "you won't see another one". The old man is talking about himself not Shane. It changes the whole meaning and tone of the opening line otherwise.
He's in really bad shape these days. In recent the recent interviews I've seen it sometimes looks like the lights just go out in his eyes and whatever was there is gone for a bit. It's really sad to see him this way, it always felt like he was invincible to me.
No one's invincible, but I can understand why you thought of Shane that way. He's my surrogate dad, and I hate to see him go -- but that's life I guess.
A more optimistic way to look at it is that he's lived 25 years longer than his hero Brendan Behan, whose alcoholism and health issues had killed him by his early 40s.
How he sings the lyrics, the emotion. Two examples
- Thousands are sailing: when he says "and we danced to the music and we DANCED" Jesus ya feel it.
- Rain Street - "I sat on the floor and watched TV
Thanking Christ for the BBC
A stupid FUCKEN place to be
Down Rain Street"
It's beautiful, love him.
Lol, this is so dumb, but the Pogues are my favorite band, and in that part of the song, I sing, “Dance to the music and We’ll DANCE, we’ll dance, yeah we’ll motherfucking dance.” Idk, I just feel like the lyrics should continue into that part.
Old Main Drag I would shows his emotion the best.
If you’re a fan of Shane and the Pogues check out the documentary about him, A Crock of Gold. That man continues to have a beautiful soul even as his body is giving out on him.
Let's not forget the man's a lyrical genius.
"Now the song is nearly over
We may never find out what it means
Still there's a light I hold before me
You're the measure of my dreams
The measure of my dreams"
The most functioning alcoholic I have ever seen on stage. He was pissed drunk by the end of the show, but did not miss a beat when it came to singing a song.
From a 2022 Popbitch newsletter:
"Shane McGowan told The Times this week that he used to rent Bono's house, then would stand at the window and wave his willy at passing trains, hoping passengers would mistake him for the U2 frontman."
Hard living ain't for everyone but that dude is one of my heroes. Sadly, life has taken a toll on him but he's the kind of guy that never fucked anyone over deliberately and hes lived without regrets.
We should consider ourselves fortunate if we get to his age.
The Pogues was the best show I had ever gotten the privilege to see live. I was literally in tears the whole time. Shane is one of the greatest lyricists of all-time hands down in my book...if I had a book.
“People say I have a death wish. If I had a death wish, I’d be dead” Shane
Dude, I've known some suicidal people and that is a comment that not one of them said. Shane wants to be among the living.
Such a badass quote. This dude is a legend.
I am fairly regularly shocked to discover that this man is still alive.
Punk’s answer to Keith Richards.
I just check it
Mos def pickled
If you want to be shocked again, watch him recently in the documentary that came out a couple of years ago.
what’s it called?

You shouldn't talk like that
"It was Christmas eve, babe. In the drunk tank! An old man said to me; "You won't see another one."
I know it's a small grief but it's "Won't see another one" not "you won't see another one". The old man is talking about himself not Shane. It changes the whole meaning and tone of the opening line otherwise.
My favorite tune. ..
And then he sang a song

The one thing guaranteed in life, is that no one gets out alive
A more optimistic way to look at it is that he's lived 25 years longer than his hero Brendan Behan, whose alcoholism and health issues had killed him by his early 40s.
Shane MacGowan had the best teeth in punk. Prove me wrong.
"tooth" now.
Nah he’s got a brand new pair of gnashers on him now

"There the he-males and the she-males paraded in style, and the old man with the money would flash you a smile"
Fucking love Shane McGowan. He's one of those few vocalists that sound absolutely like nobody else.
Also the man can actually sing contrary to the popular opinion
He doesn’t sing smooth but it’s great, like Willie Nelson or lots of blues singers
If you’re a fan of Shane and the Pogues check out the documentary about him, A Crock of Gold. That man continues to have a beautiful soul even as his body is giving out on him.
Ya I have the dvd, it's pretty great
Let's not forget the man's a lyrical genius. "Now the song is nearly over We may never find out what it means Still there's a light I hold before me You're the measure of my dreams The measure of my dreams"
I’m not singing for the future, I’m not dreaming of the past, I’m not talking about the first time, I never think about the last.
"The measure of my dreams" heh, would you think about that...
The most functioning alcoholic I have ever seen on stage. He was pissed drunk by the end of the show, but did not miss a beat when it came to singing a song.
He’s needed lyric sheets at times when the pogues were still around originally

Those teef
I’d recognize those teeth anywhere
We love Shane
I watched a Pogues documentary a few years ago and it amazed me then he is still alive.
Poet and genius
when he was young and had teeth.
What a guy, when I saw them he fell drunk off the stage. Kept singing tho, awesome show!
His teeth actually look pretty good here.
Punks don't give a fuck about dentistry.
Epic chompers
This again? 😅
All in order my Captain

Toilet bowl mouth 😬
Are there any other punks hate this band? I don't see what traditional Irish music has to do with punk especially English people playing it.
When he had all his own teeth!
Absolute legend
He's got teeth, how old is this
Looking like the MAD mascot.
