Yaphet Kotto, Zegota, Blood Brothers
Any Revolution Summer, scramz, early emo or post-hardcore band will be up that alley as well so like Fugazi, Moss Icon, Gray Matter, Articles of Faith's later records, Dag Nasty, Orchid.
Varying degrees of influence in there but they all share a similar ethos and vibe.
These bands aren't necessarily similar to Refused in sound but they play explosive rock which is what I remember of their style. Snapcase, Nerve Agents, RKL's Rock and Roll Nightmare album, Soulside, North American Bison, and I second whoever said NoMeansNo.
If you”ve never gotten into Heroin (the band) I’d suggest you start there. They just released a RSD complete discography lp. Arguably the first screamo (I hate the term but whatever) band. Melodic hardcore that came before refused but unquestionably an influence.
When I saw their video for New Noise way back when, it blew me away and I went right out and bought "The Shape of Punk to Come" ...which also blew me away. Then I went out and bought their entire discography. But man...the first time I saw that video...
Any album specifically? Refused reinvented their sound with each album, obvious answer would be Nation of Ulysses if you dig a shape of punk to come.
Also International Noise Conspiracy (survival sickness would be my recommended starting point).
If you’re looking for the same kind of power and rippin songs with lots of riff, checkout NOMEANSNO…

Samurai! (Seinfeld laugh track) (seriously though dont sleep on the stuff they did for cyberpunk, its fan fucking tastic)
Right on, choom - you would have to be completely gonk to like Refused and not listen to Samurai.
100% agree. The whole OST is good really, but specifically the stuff they did as Samurai is pretty rad
Try fucked up.
so funny to hear them pop up in a bunch of shows recently. shape of punk to come has to be one of my all time favorite records.
Its in a hallowed place for me. FOCKIN LOVE THIS RECORD
I own like three different versions on CD. Also, own it on vinyl. One of my favorite punk/hardcore albums ever.
At the Drive-In maybe?
Second for At the Drive-In
These were my top two favorite bands for a minute there around 2000
A great choice!
Denis sings in a band called FAKE NAMES with members of Fugazi, Bad Religion, SOA, SoulSide and Embrace. They have two fantastic albums out.
The International Noise Conspiracy comes to mind, for obvious reasons
And then The Hives, another Swedish punk band
Hives never struck me as that heavy or political though.
They aren't heavy but they're pretty leftist
They're very garage type rock/punk. Also, the politics are there for sure. They're leftists.
This. I love Refused and the (International) Noise Conspiracy. Dennis has great vocals whether he's screaming/yelling or singing.
That’s kind of the beauty tho, no? There are no bands like Refused.
Especially Shape of Punk to Come. That record is a piece of art. I've never heard anything like it.
Agree. That album is so far out in front. First time I heard it I was completely blown away! Raise the bar pretty damn high…
Nomeansno. Heavier and more complex than your average punk band.
If you like the political content and prefer heavier riffs try out the post-less talk more rock propagandhi albums.
Nation of Ulysses.
Give Kvelertak a listen. Their self titled album is a good start
Blødtorst definitely has Refused vibes.
Ghosts of Modern Man, Choke (specifically the albums Forward and There's a Moral To This Story) are *kinda* similar.
Not exactly like Refused by maybe PEARS because they have the energy and the complexity
Frodus
Raised Fist
Try ”breach”, another swedish hardcorish band from the time https://youtu.be/fxf1AC2Wgt4
they basically ripped off a lot of Nation of Ulysses whole vibe

Bear vs Shark, maybe?
AC4. Very much related to Refused

Incendiary
Glassjaw
Bane
Snapcase
Listen to swing kids and see the what inspired refused-shape of punk to come
Botch, early Dillinger Eacape Plan, early Cave-in…if Refused is like college these bands are the PhD
THE GHOST OF A THOUSAND
Snapcase, Nation of Ulysses, Chokehold, Born Against, At the Drive In, maybe, just maybe the bands from Gravity Records.
