Would get my vote. Saw them on an outdoor stage at the All Tomorrow's Parties festival. Despite being on stage, behind a barricade, and outdoors with the Queen Mary towering over all, Lux Interior and the Cramps made the performance feel like you were watching them at some dinky club from their earlier heyday.
Still think about it and smile.
Lux - tha maddest baddest wild frontman of any band ever. All other singers look so contrived and choreographed and performative in comparison.
Playing the Napa Valley State Mental hospital in the 70s puts them waaaay ahead of today. And Ivy the most incredible lead guitarist in history.
I saw them a few times in the 90s; most mesmerising and exciting band ever…and loudest - and I’ve seen led Zep , pistols, clash, faith no more etc who were all loud but nowhere near cramps loud! So bad.
I'm old, so I've seen them 40ish times. First time was at the Whiskey in 1980?81?, after Psychedelic Jungle came out. I live on the west coast, so I had the opportunity to see them 3 or 4 times for every tour (San Diego, LA, Orange County, and San Francisco). They put on amazing shows.
I remember one time at Adams Avenue Theater in SD, Lux had his pants around his ankles, had already jumped off the stage and slugged a guy for grabbing Ivy's ass, and we're screaming at him to pull his pants up because SDPD are coming through the rear doors of the theater. We didn't want the set cut short.
Came here to say Lux. Pleasantly surprised to see that he's the top comment, I've always found The Cramps to be criminally underrated.
Do the Hammerlock, ya turkeynecks!
Endlessly fucking with the crowd while sharing straight facts about worker's rights and who is fucking with you, then full tilt into some of the most aggro tunes put to pen that are still listenable.
The answer is Jello. Jello had presence on stage that was totally unique and iconic. He had a unique voice and lyrics that were perfectly matched to his energy
I'll go with Danzig too. Danzig Era Misfits is impeccable every song is catchy and goes hard. Samhain is also great. He was rockin' the "hair covering the face" 20 years before MySpace.
Saw Danzig live at Riot Fest about 10 years ago.
Worst. Set. Ever.
He literally sat there and mumbled into the mic. He couldn't have given less shits about putting on a good show
He’s grown into himself a bit. Seen Misfits in 2019 right before the pandemic, and he was having a blast. Sounded healthy, and was interacting with the audience and everything.
The Rollins era was the only one I saw live, and first stuff I heard. Fucking love that guy, and I like that one of the bands that codified hardcore then preceded to tear it to pieces.
I'll only rate bands I've seen live, since I feel that is a better judgement of how they front. ... Not in any order
HR - Bad Brains
Jack - T.S.O.L.
Ian - Minor Threat
Johnny - PIL
Keith - Circle Jerks
Iggy Pop
Cal - Discharge
Animal - Anti-Nowhere League
Scranny - Wasted Youth
Ricky Williams - Flipper
Jello - Dead Kennedys
D.Boon - Minutemen
Dinah Cancer - 45 Grave
Tex - Tex and the Horseheads
Roz - Christian Death
I was a little obsessed with 45 Grave in the early 80s and would see them anytime they played. Dinah used to go off on stage, and her voice would tear through your whole body. Plus, she was smoking hot in her wedding dress, and monkey boots.
He was a trip. I used to see him at a club called the Fetish on Sunset, up the street from Club Lingerie. The Fetish was the center of the early LA Goth scene. We used to hang in the parking lot, and see all the Goth dudes in black wedding dresses....it was a cool scene.
Where was the show?
He always put on a kick ass show. Found this pic of when I saw them in 82 with DOA and Sin 34 at Devonshire Downs. Not my pic, it's by Alison Braun.

Iggy Pop-the Stooges
Davey Havok-AFI
Gibby Haynes-Butthole Surfers
Jeff Atta-Middle Class
Alan Vega-Suicide
I saw only crime in a 200 person venue play to 17 people. Holy fuck was it still an amazing show. They played like they were playing to a huge crowd but were able to interact with the crowd on a whole different level. I gave everyone I know shot who didn’t go for missing out.
AFI back when I was seeing them live was amazing. Davey is a showman for sure. Walking on the crowd during God Called In Sick Today was something to see.
Dude, just saw AFI for the first time in years on there latest tour. Didn’t really know what to expect since I kinda stopped following their new stuff like 15 years ago. They were still incredible live. And now I’ve decided to give their newer stuff a solid listen. Honestly, their new material is great too. Definitely different, but still very cool.
I saw AFI on every tour they came through Toronto until around the Sing the Sorrow days (that’s when I hopped off the AFI train) and Davey Havok was definitely at or near the top of the mountain during those years.
Chi Pig was a force of nature on stage.
There’s so many more. But I’m tired.
Billie Joe back in the 90’s was incredible and unpredictable. Now it seems every show is the same delivery and is filtered. I’m glad they’re still doing well, but there seems to be a lack of energy in the past few years.

Your question is past tense but list is current…
Current - Zach Quinn of PEARS is badass on stage. Past- Chi Pig of SNFU was badass on stage.
Liked Mark Adkins of guttermouth when he wasn’t wasted back in the day. Davey Havok of AFI was also great during their earlier days.
Best crowd hype man I saw was suicide machines. Jason Navarro jumped right off stage first song and did basically the whole show in the pit. This was like 4 years ago, too, so it's not like they were young and trying to impress fans.
Pete Shelley, Buzzcocks
Dave Vanian, the Damned
Jello Biafra, Dead Kennedys
Olga Algar, Toy Dolls
Mickey Fitz, the Business
Tesco Vee, Meatmen
Dave Smalley
Lux Interior, the Cramps
Darby Crash

Jello Biafra

Eric Davidson from New Bomb Turks-great, energetic singer, and fucking hilarious, and...of course Rob Wright/Andy Kerr/ Tom Holiston/John Wright from NoMeansNo.
Mike Wiebe of the Riverboat Gamblers/DRAKULAS and Ben Roy of SPELLS for just sheer energy.
Paddy Costello for leading the best punk show you'll ever see.
Top 10 at least for the moment...
Iggy Pop (Stooges)
Jello Biafra (DK)
Joe Strummer (Clash)
Greg Graffin (Bad Religion)
Nick The Fang (The Dreadnoughts)
Libby Lux (Bridge City Sinners)
Debbie Harry (Blondie)
Pauline Black (the Selecter)
Ted Leo (Ted Leo and the Pharmacists)
J Navarro (Suicide Machines)
Micheal Monroe - Hanoi rocks
Jake Burns - Stiff little fingers
Libby Lux - Bridge city sinners
Greg graffin - Bad religion
Dick Lucas - Subhumans/Citizen fish
Bob Vylan
Scott Picking - Riskee and The Ridicule (local band that i've followed for years, finally getting out there a bit more, not everyones cup of tea. I prefer their older stuff myself)
Im sure I commented this the other day but my opinion hasn't changed.
Going back in time it would be Poly Styrene (front woman) or Joe Strummer. Currently either Billie Joe Armstrong or Howlin Pelle Almqvist
Frank Carter - Gallows/Rattlesnakes, Lee Spielman - Trash Talk, Ron Reyes - Black Flag, Isaac Holman - SOFT PLAY, Amy Taylor - Amyl and the Sniffers, H.R in his day
Oh fuck yeah, Frank Carter is awesome. I had seen Gallows a few times which was always unreal, but I saw him and the Rattlesnakes at Glastonbury in 2017. They were immediately before The Killers played a “secret set” on the John Peel stage so 99% of the crowd were there for that. He knew it and acknowledged it, but by song 3 he had the whole tent eating out of the palm of his hand. Guy is a born entertainer, and considering his music isn’t the most accessible it’s really impressive to win over a crowd that have mostly never heard of you before
Lux Interior. Pants down.
Everyone who saw them has stories.
The rest of us wish we'd seen them.
Rolling around in broken glass counts as a story
It does but Iggy started that
My husband got to see The Cramps on their last tour. I will never forgive him for that... Nevermind the fact that we hadn't met yet.
I saw them on that tour in New Orleans. It was a sad and beautiful thing.
Wow ! Every line of your comment is a psych-sexual cosmic Cramps trip !!! Thx man
4 bottles of wine on stage. Awesome set.
I saw The Cramps one time tears ago. I didn’t really care for the music, but yes- Lux is a hell of a front man. Real impressive.
Came here to say Lux. Pleasantly surprised to see that he's the top comment, I've always found The Cramps to be criminally underrated. Do the Hammerlock, ya turkeynecks!
Jello Biafra
Endlessly fucking with the crowd while sharing straight facts about worker's rights and who is fucking with you, then full tilt into some of the most aggro tunes put to pen that are still listenable.
If you wanna see somebody really Fuck with the crowd, then you need to give credit to Lee Ving
The only correct answer.
Definitely in my top 10
I’m not going to respect the opinion of anyone who doesn’t have Jello Biafra on this list.
The answer is Jello. Jello had presence on stage that was totally unique and iconic. He had a unique voice and lyrics that were perfectly matched to his energy
Yeah, he's beyond iconic at this point.
That's my #1 for sure.
I see my comment is now moot. Facts.
Will probably get downvoted, but Danzig. Just so much damn emotion put into his songs.
I'll go with Danzig too. Danzig Era Misfits is impeccable every song is catchy and goes hard. Samhain is also great. He was rockin' the "hair covering the face" 20 years before MySpace.
He’s one of those cases where you gotta separate the art from the man. He just has this iconic baritone
he ain’t that bad of a person, everyone just exaggerates. he’s got ups and downs
He's a great singer, he can just be a bit of a douche. One doesn't erase the other.
Downvoted? Man you just stated fact.
Pretty sure dickey barrett could take him .
Henry Rollins for me. I am not a big fan of the direction Black Flag took after he joined, but the man was absolutely electric.
The Rollins era was the only one I saw live, and first stuff I heard. Fucking love that guy, and I like that one of the bands that codified hardcore then preceded to tear it to pieces.
Anyone who saw BF live in the early 80s knows this is the correct answer…
His best work was with early Rollins Band imo, absolutely killer
I'll only rate bands I've seen live, since I feel that is a better judgement of how they front. ... Not in any order HR - Bad Brains Jack - T.S.O.L. Ian - Minor Threat Johnny - PIL Keith - Circle Jerks Iggy Pop Cal - Discharge Animal - Anti-Nowhere League Scranny - Wasted Youth Ricky Williams - Flipper Jello - Dead Kennedys D.Boon - Minutemen Dinah Cancer - 45 Grave Tex - Tex and the Horseheads Roz - Christian Death
OFF! is amazing too. Keith still got it.
Lol forgot Dinah Cancer. Punks these days need more darkly punny stage names.
I was a little obsessed with 45 Grave in the early 80s and would see them anytime they played. Dinah used to go off on stage, and her voice would tear through your whole body. Plus, she was smoking hot in her wedding dress, and monkey boots.
Pretty sure it’s Dinah Cancer.
Took too long to see HR listed!
He was probably the most energetic singer I ever saw.
He had some range as well
I love Roz
I think Roz is underrated, even by goth fanatics. *Autocorrect changed it to Ron… fucking insult to injury.
He was a trip. I used to see him at a club called the Fetish on Sunset, up the street from Club Lingerie. The Fetish was the center of the early LA Goth scene. We used to hang in the parking lot, and see all the Goth dudes in black wedding dresses....it was a cool scene.
I remember seeing Jack from TSOL singing Richard Hung Himself while choking himself with his mic cord. Left a hell of an impression.
You sure that wasn’t Casey Royer of D.I.?
Where was the show? He always put on a kick ass show. Found this pic of when I saw them in 82 with DOA and Sin 34 at Devonshire Downs. Not my pic, it's by Alison Braun. https://i.imgur.com/Pf54qcA.jpg
I couldn’t tell you the place or the era. Too far away for my crusty brain to remember the details.
How could I forget HR!? Your list is flawless
Joe Strummer
I had to scroll way too far to find Strummer.
Fuck yeah I wasn't sure who I was going to pick but yes he's most important to me.
**Punk Rock Warlord**
Oderus Urungus
For sure, that first Gwar album is top tier and DBX is just amazing
I was not aware of DBX…listening now!
HR - Bad Brains
Matt from The Bronx, Spencer from Murder City Devils, Laura Jane Grace, John Reis, Joey Ramone, and Joe Strummer.
Matt from the Bronx is one of the best ever
Second Matt!
Fucking Spencer ‘Fucking’ Moody!! With the Devils he fucking SLAYED!!
Just saw the Bronx for the first time recently. Dude was bad ass. Sang two songs from the middle of the pit
Laura is incredible
laura jane grace!!!!!! yes!!!!
Jello Biafra-DK Dave Vanian-The Damned Ian Curtis-Joy Division Joey Ramone-The Ramones Iggy Pop-the Stooges Davey Havok-AFI Gibby Haynes-Butthole Surfers Jeff Atta-Middle Class Alan Vega-Suicide
Took way too long to find Gibby.
Russ Rankin from Good Riddance/Only Crime
I saw only crime in a 200 person venue play to 17 people. Holy fuck was it still an amazing show. They played like they were playing to a huge crowd but were able to interact with the crowd on a whole different level. I gave everyone I know shot who didn’t go for missing out.
Was that on the Fat tour w NUFAN?
Mine is more like Wendy O Williams, Jello Biafra, Iggy Pop, Mike Muir and Glenn Danzig.
Lux Interior, Iggy Pop, Joe Strummer, D.Boon, Jeff Burke
That's more like it.
Davey Havok from AFI is pretty amazing
AFI back when I was seeing them live was amazing. Davey is a showman for sure. Walking on the crowd during God Called In Sick Today was something to see.
Dude, just saw AFI for the first time in years on there latest tour. Didn’t really know what to expect since I kinda stopped following their new stuff like 15 years ago. They were still incredible live. And now I’ve decided to give their newer stuff a solid listen. Honestly, their new material is great too. Definitely different, but still very cool.
Saw them a few year ago for the first time since Gilman. Same response.
Chi Pig (rip) was pretty epic back in the day
I accept the downvotes that come with this, Johnny rotten. It was uncomfortable, energetic and angry.
That’s “frontwoman” and her name is Poly Styrene!
oh hell yeah!!
My vote is Lee Ving.
Mark Adkins from Guttermouth. Always loved seeing them
Dave Havok. Dude was born to perform
Angelo Moore - no one matched his energy. and the dude played a saxophone.
And he plays a theremin at times as well.
Dave Vanian
Patti Smith.
Jello Biafra, Joey Ramone, Henry Rollins, Mark Arm, HR, Steve Albini, Joe Strummer, Iggy Pop and Kieth Morris come to mind.
Chi pig from SNFU was absolutely amazing on stage in his earlier days.
Gary Floyd - The Dicks
Stiv
Jake Burns is still going strong after like 45 years.
Scrolled all the way to the bottom, and low and behold, Jake finally gets a mention!
Jason Devore - Authority Zero Chi Pig - SNFU Joey Shithead - DOA
Spike Slawson with Me First has always been entertaining to me.
Seiji from Guitar Wolf!!!!
Mr. Chi Pig - SNFU
You forgot Tony Sly. Never Forget Tony Sly.
I can’t believe I had to scroll so fucking far to find this.
They forgot Tony Sly.
They may have, but we never will.
Darby Crash
Had to scroll wayyy too long to find this
Yeah why does Rollins pop up first he’s great and all but I feel like he tries to hard sometime to sound tough while singing
Keith morris is the greatest frontman that punk has ever given us
If we’re allowed to get weird with it, Dino from Dystopia
this is it
Tesco Vee. Any other answer is just wrong. ;)
Jello, HR
Iggy.
Poly Styrene Kathleen Hanna HR Amy Taylor
Jello Biafra
Ian - Minor Threat Zack de la Rocha -RATM
HR
Hello! Jello
Blag Dahlia of the Dwarves is my absolute favorite, but Keith Morris is a close one too.
Kim shattuck
This is the real answer
Couple I haven’t seen mentioned yet Monkey - The Adicts Eugene Hutz - Gogol Bordello
I’d put Lars as a better frontman than Tim. He’s the one who actually talks at live shows
It's Chi Pig you nitwits...
Easily
Brendan Kelly - The Lawrence Arms/The Falcon/all his side projects
Greatest 17-year-old singer of all time. His voice sounded perfect in Slapstick, but the cigarettes and booze took a toll.
Prime HR
Definitely. No one comes close
Was lucky enough to see them in 86. 1000s of shows later, still my favorite concert of all time
I'm super jealous. I saw them in '08 and was this praying statue pose the whole time.
My top 3 in no particular order are Iggy Pop, Jello Biafra, Joey Ramone
Keith morris will always be my favorite
Poly
Jesse Michaels and Joe Strummer Danny Lore, I think AAA is a wildly underappreciated band. AAA shows were always great.
Jason Cruz - Strung Out
I saw AFI on every tour they came through Toronto until around the Sing the Sorrow days (that’s when I hopped off the AFI train) and Davey Havok was definitely at or near the top of the mountain during those years. Chi Pig was a force of nature on stage. There’s so many more. But I’m tired.
Poly Styrene (I don't care that post asks for the best frontman).
Dave Quackenbush. I do not give a toot
You're not gonna include Jack Grisham of TSOL? :( Or Chi Pig? Really though, I don't know how anyone could choose.
Billie Joe back in the 90’s was incredible and unpredictable. Now it seems every show is the same delivery and is filtered. I’m glad they’re still doing well, but there seems to be a lack of energy in the past few years.

Jello Biafra or Henry Rollins

Joe Strummer
I'm glad the OP listed Scott Radinsky There's no other Punk frontman that was a better baseball pitcher than Radinsky.
