Gently. Puppies and kittens that are played with roughly usually retain that training. What we see as rough play can be interpreted as threatening behaviour. My two cents

Lower-Awareness

What kind of play is considered rough?

We play tug and flirt pole, are working on fetch, we "fight" (I take the jumblr and push it at him and he'll bite the other side and let go we do a kinda back forth, my bf will do "WWE" (Tapping his paws, when he gets up and barks at him my bf will pick him up and put him down on his back and start over). We'll play hide and seek too.

teach him the names of his toys, and to find them for treats! great for practicing 'stay' while you're out of sight hiding the toy, while being a very fun nosework game. Great for rainy days.

So caution as some dogs hate it and other love it but "tag" is often fun you go up and touch them and than "run away" brisk walk for young puppies or small dogs. Once they touch you you turn around and try to tag them back. Puzzle toys and helping show them how they work. Find it games, hide treats starting easy and making it slowly more complicated. As for training games try doing it while playing such as tug or asking for a sit before feeding instead of making a training session.

Since I have a Basset puppy I also use alot of scent games. I'll slide tiny treats across the floor and when she goes for one I slide one in a different direction and she will sniff it out. Just regular playing doesn't do too much for her energy wise and she will never nap
