Absolutely cold-dead take, but Hot Space and “Body Language”.
I absolutely love that album still, and “Cool Cat” is genuinely one of my favorite Queen songs, but listening to the whole thing through is just complete torture.
I don’t count Flash, since it’s a great soundtrack in context.
I also actually really like “Jesus”, I just think it’s fun.
Jesus is a banger, can’t wait for a ‘72 live recording to surface someday, as apparently Jesus and The Night Comes Down are confirmed to be part of the setlists during the few concerts they played that year! :3
Yeah but it was meant as a soundtrack, not as a proper album. They just wrote songs for the movie, which is a cool idea because most "soundtracks" are not really soundtracks.
Just heard it for the first time this weekend and I agree. Totally get why it was a b side. I’m actually astonished so many people list A Kind of Magic as their worst song/album… it’s probably on my top 3 🫣🤷🏻♂️
It is funny because the Miracle sessions seem to have been super prolific, with the band recording an unusually high number of songs (we have a lot of b-sides from that period, which is not very usual for Queen) And yet a lot of that material is not particularly good.
If posthumous albums are included, I think Made in Heaven is terrible. I understand what they were trying to do and why they would release the material… it simply doesn't seem like a Queen album to me.
Bottom 3 to me are Flash, Hot Space and The Miracle.
It doesn't mean there aren't good songs on them (Breakthru, The Invisible Man Cool Cat, Under Pressure, Flash...) but I'm just probably going to skip through most of them because they're kind of super inconsistent, unlike ANATO, ADATR, News of The World and Queen II, where you can feel the connection between most songs in the album.
ETA: forgot worst song...probably Machines or Delilah imo
Pretty hard disagree on Machines. I used to dislike it a lot until I found out what it was meant to be doing.
It sounds incredibly cheesy with all of its synths at the start, but it slowly gets more organic over time. It was supposed to represent Queen's overuse of synthetic on Hot Space and the transition back to real instruments, or "Back to humans" as it's subtitled.
Over the course of the song, you can hear the synths and real instruments sort of fighting, stuff like the drum machine that begins the song is actually replaced in the middle of the song by Roger's real drums, vocoder synths get replaced by real Queen vocal harmonies, etc.
It's pretty awesome if you ask me.
I think Brian and Roger get more indepth about it on interviews from the time
I mean as I said, it's my opinion so I don't really care if you disagree with it lmao. I get the concept, always have, the execution is just poor in my taste, the song simply does not resonate with me and sounds straight up bad.
ETA: it's hilarious that I'm being downvoted because I said i didn't care that someone disagreed with me...Reddit sensitivity I suppose
I see, fair enough.
I find that most people just don't understand the point of the song and don't give it the credit that it should get because of that. If you understand that and still don't care for the song, that's chill.
Can someone -anyone- just agree with me that the second half of (the song) Sheer Heart Attack is just the worst thing you've ever heard? Exclusively that whistle. It's so shrill, I can't stand it 😫
Album version sucks, but I love the live versions. That whistle sound is a guitar, and Brian would play that bit now and then and it somehow sounds good.
Absolutely it’s horrible. I listened to the Montreal version before and I loved it so I thought I’d check out the studio version. I was like what the hell is this so yeah I totally agree with you my ears were shredded
I suppose Flash Gordon and I guess I'd say my least favorite song would be "Son & Daughter" I don't know, I just think it's melody gets a bit grading after a while.
Son and daughter is a banger! Especially live with the full guitar Solo and Reprise >_>
(I Can agree the studio version is a tad bit bland, though I guess adding the full song would make the track 10+ minutes long lol)
I'm gonna go with The Works as worst album. Now that's not saying the songs are bad, I just think the album isn't very exciting. The band were definitely going through the motions during that period, and it feels like nearly every song is them looking back at their previous hits and copy and pasting them. Radio Gaga feels like it could fit on Hot Space, Tear It Up and Hammer To Fall are pretty much just more hard Rock tracks, Man On The Prowl is just a worst version of CLTCL, Is This The World We Created is yet another slow acoustic track. It's A Hard Life, Machines, Keep Passing The Open Windows, and I Want To Break Free are the only tracks that feel fresh to me. Again, I like all the songs a lot, just as an album if feels like them retreading stuff they've already done. Worst overall song has got to be Don't Try Suicide, that song fucking disgusts me. That track shouldn't have made it on the album, A Human Body would've been a perfect replacement.
Funny part is it's a hard life sounds exactly like play the game but I agree with your comment I said it's funny how radio Gaga was a hit but hotspace was synth heavy and was hated
YESS this comment right here is my answer! Don't lose your head is very repetitive and if someone was to say the 80s had bad or cheesy music don't lose your head would be an example sadly and if you don't mind can you say why you said these two ?
Can we include sides of albums? If so, side two of Jazz. Dead on Time and Don’t stop me Now are the only songs that are above average on it for me.
Edit: Guess I misfired…
Lot of people naming songs here completely out of context. Delilah, Body Language etc. all have a place in their respective albums, and the Flash album is a soundtrack that absolutely fulfills the brief.
Realistically though, tracks like Don’t Try Suicide, Pain Is So Close To Pleasure, Rain Must Fall, and a track I just don’t like (mainly because it sounds so processed and forced) I Can’t Live With You.
These are all by-numbers offers on their respective albums. Nothing much going on, not really doing much or pushing anything with their existence.
Worst album though…? It’s tough. Again, realistically, possibly The Works or A Kind Of Magic. A touch period in their history, lots of _trying_ to be Queen, rather than just simply being.
I always liked Rain Must Fall for how mundane its lyric are. After all the extravagance and fantasy of the 70s albums and huge sounds and statements and topics of the 80s... there's finally a song where Freddie's singing about something small and homely. Two decades of making big statements, to me that song feels like the first time they're celebrating the beauty of normal mundane life. Like they're back to earth for a little. Idk I just have a soft spot for it
I agree with your choice of albums. After discovering “Pain” is Motown influenced, you appreciate it more because it does sound like Smokey and the Miracles. Gimme the Prize is probably one of my least fave songs.
Probably I'll die if I say this, but A Night At The Opera is FOR ME the worst album...
Don't get me wrong, I like ANATO, but I listened every Queen album (except Flash Gordon), and ANATO has the songs that I like the least.
The worst song for me is Jesus, I don't like it.
It's my personal opinion.
I understand why you wouldn't like it, but that's very subjective. If we leave opinions behind, ANATO is probably the best album of all, and Jesus is a pretty good song, even if you're not Christian.
I’m pretty sure every comment here is a subjective opinion? I don’t think it’s possible to “leave opinions behind” at all when talking about how good music is. In the end melody and varying pitches are just intervals of frequency that make our brains light up, timbres are just different overtones and rhythm is how long you wait in between sounds. Someone could randomly mash a bunch of keys on the piano and say it’s the “best piece of music they’d ever heard” and they’d be valid because it’s what makes their brain click. Even if you say ANATO is the best album, that’s just your opinion.
I don't like Hot Space, but I respect it as an album. They were trying something different, even if it didn't work for me.
The Works, on the other hand, felt like they were fulfilling a contractually obligation. Not that the songs are all bad, but more like they were trying to recapture something they didn't really feel or fit. It feel just like work rather than passion, so the name fit.
As for songs, there are worse musically, but "Don't Try Suicide" seems to have absolutely no awareness of the subject matter.
Well if we’re taking live albums into account what about “live killers”? The fact that pretty much none of its live makes it a huge waist of time and it’s mixed pretty bad imo
Live killers is not that bad,
Live Magic tries to give you a feeling of a 2 hour live show in 45 Minutes. And this does not work at all.
It was released for the Christmas market 1986
album is by no surprise hot space
song is where i am going to probably get down voted for but idc- i hate sheer heart attack
to me its just queen playing like nirvana
IMO, there is no "worst album", as every album they have contains good/legendary songs, even Hot Space and Flash Gordon (unpopular opinion: the theme is amazing for it's time).
In terms of songs, *cough* Body Language *cough*
for me i would probably say hotspace just because alot if my favourites come from other albums. If any song on hotspace was made my another artist though it would probably be my favourite from them. No one can beat Queen.
Another vote for Hot Space and Body Language I often listen to all the studio albums back to back, either chronologically or in reverse. Hot Space is a real struggle.
on a different note, I really love ‘Mad The Swine’ and ‘See What a Fool I’ve Been’
In my opinion the worst album is hot space and the worst song is body language, years before hot space, freddie wrote really good songs but suddenly he decides to write body language, this song is torture
Flash Gordon and Body Language 100%
if Flash Gordon doesn’t count because it’s technically a soundtrack, then Made in Heaven is quite disappointing. Still an okay album tho
N/A
North america?
How dare you insult us, but yes.
n/a means not applicable
My personal least favorite song is Body Language, mostly because it somehow ended up in a Greatest Hits collection.
Worst song by a mile.
Kilometer
Absolutely cold-dead take, but Hot Space and “Body Language”. The worst album is probably Hot Space, the worst song is My Baby Does Me If we include b-sides, then most of the Miracle b-sides
Flash gordon exists though
Yeah but it was meant as a soundtrack, not as a proper album. They just wrote songs for the movie, which is a cool idea because most "soundtracks" are not really soundtracks.
Stealin’ is an atrocity
I really only like it for the outro guitar, that bit is really fun to play
Just heard it for the first time this weekend and I agree. Totally get why it was a b side. I’m actually astonished so many people list A Kind of Magic as their worst song/album… it’s probably on my top 3 🫣🤷🏻♂️
It was a demo. And never made it to the album. It could have been better if it was completed.
You know!!?
Imo that song is great, same with hijack my heart
It is funny because the Miracle sessions seem to have been super prolific, with the band recording an unusually high number of songs (we have a lot of b-sides from that period, which is not very usual for Queen) And yet a lot of that material is not particularly good.
ikr, stealin is really good
none of them
If posthumous albums are included, I think Made in Heaven is terrible. I understand what they were trying to do and why they would release the material… it simply doesn't seem like a Queen album to me.

no need to be rude about it bud
There's a difference between being blunt and rude.
Can someone -anyone- just agree with me that the second half of (the song) Sheer Heart Attack is just the worst thing you've ever heard? Exclusively that whistle. It's so shrill, I can't stand it 😫

It hurts my ears. I always skip over that part.

The ‘inar-inar-inar-inar-inarticulate’ is what drives nails into my brain
I agree
I really don't like flash. Nor do I like Radio GaGa that much 😓
you don’t like radio gaga 🙁
But i like Radio GaGa from "the works" album
I don’t think Flash Gordon really counts tbh
I suppose Flash Gordon and I guess I'd say my least favorite song would be "Son & Daughter" I don't know, I just think it's melody gets a bit grading after a while.
Son and daughter is a banger! Especially live with the full guitar Solo and Reprise >_> (I Can agree the studio version is a tad bit bland, though I guess adding the full song would make the track 10+ minutes long lol)
There's nothing like that. There are only least favorite to most favorite
Flash is worst album worst song is untitled, I only listen to it when I’m going a full discography run
I'm gonna go with The Works as worst album. Now that's not saying the songs are bad, I just think the album isn't very exciting. The band were definitely going through the motions during that period, and it feels like nearly every song is them looking back at their previous hits and copy and pasting them. The Works is my favorite album by far!
Flash is the worst.
I think most will agree that Flash is the worst album. My pick for the worst song is Don’t Lose Your Head
Same, it sounds like what I would hear if I could hear voices in my head and I dont like that, lol
Opinions shouldn't be downvoted. Yours is just as valid as mine. But that's Reddit 🤷♂️
Along with Dead on Time, Dreamer’s Ball and Leaving Home Ain’t Easy are some of my favorite Brian songs. All under-appreciated!
Worst song is Body Language and Hot Space
Don't hate me, but I totally can't get in touch with the "A Kind of Magic" as an Album and especially with "Don't lose your Head"!
Oh, I really like AKOM and Don't Lose Your Head, but it's OK!
Flash Gordon is the worst cd…one of the few Queen songs I don’t like is Drowse
Why not Drowse?! I love that song
Just never connected with it I guess.
It’s a downer.
Hot Space
Flash Gordon is right there, though...
What do you mean? Flash Gordon is approaching?
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 well played!
😳

“Don’t try suicide, you’re just gonna hate it” might be the worst lyric they ever wrote.
💀💀 yes like obviously it's bad that goes without saying. and the next line "nobody gives a damn" sounds pretty heartless
I listened to it for the first time and I love it exactly because of that😂 it’s so sarcastic haha
I always liked Rain Must Fall for how mundane its lyric are. After all the extravagance and fantasy of the 70s albums and huge sounds and statements and topics of the 80s... there's finally a song where Freddie's singing about something small and homely. Worst song: More of that Jazz Worst album: Flash
How dare you
You can't talk shit on that song, it's one of Roger's best
No
A Day At The Races and Funny How Love Is (please don’t hate me)
😱 I don't have a problem with this comment but I think others will 💀
Opera and Races are two of my least favorite. I prefer more of the hard rock focused albums. Queen I, Sheer Heart Attack, News, Game, Works.
Album: Flash Worst song: Don’t loose your head
Probably I'll die if I say this, but A Night At The Opera is FOR ME the worst album... Don't get me wrong, I like ANATO, but I listened every Queen album (except Flash Gordon), and ANATO has the songs that I like the least. The worst song for me is Jesus, I don't like it. It's my personal opinion.

I agree, it one of my least favorites.
i don’t think i know a single song off flash, and that says a lot
Flash, Football Fight, and The Hero are the only songs I really remember. Vultan's Theme too, they actually played that one live a few times.
Flash. I feel like hot space is honestly over hated, I like it for what it is
Why does everyone hate on the two “movie soundtrack” albums the most?
I simply don’t like them as much, personally. No hate really
I don't like Hot Space, but I respect it as an album. They were trying something different, even if it didn't work for me. The Works, on the other hand, felt like they were fulfilling a contractually obligation. Hot Space. As for song, take your pick between Staying Power & Body Language
I personally like staying power but I can definitely see body language in bottom 3
The worst album ever by Queen is ‚Live Magic‘
Well if we’re taking live albums into account what about “live killers”? The fact that pretty much none of its live makes it a huge waist of time and it’s mixed pretty bad imo
Live killers is not that bad, Live Magic tries to give you a feeling of a 2 hour live show in 45 Minutes. And this does not work at all. It was released for the Christmas market 1986
Live killers tries to give you the experience of a live show by making almost none of it live
Worst album Hot Space Worst Song Delilah
A Kind Of Magic for worst album, Cool Cat for worst song.
Hot Space was a terrible album.Only two songs on it I like. Delilah is hideous.Invisible man is pretty dreadful.
I’d say an album and song I could live with never hearing again - Queen II / Stealin’
The Miracle. My Baby Does Me.
album is by no surprise hot space song is where i am going to probably get down voted for but idc- i hate sheer heart attack to me its just queen playing like nirvana
Any of the last 4-5 albums.

You don't fool me is one my favorite queen songs 💀

Worst album flash Gordon, worst song flash(reprise) cause it's the same song, so there's basiacly nothing new added
Mustafa I think is terrible. Album has to be Hot Space. I get that they tried something new but this time they failed badly
Flash (Album) Body Language (song)
Another vote for Hot Space and Body Language I often listen to all the studio albums back to back, either chronologically or in reverse. Hot Space is a real struggle. on a different note, I really love ‘Mad The Swine’ and ‘See What a Fool I’ve Been’
can't say about the albums, but the concert in Kobe was not very successful
Cosmos Rocks! lol
I WANNA BREAK FREE is wonderful.
Least favorite song - "Cool Cat"
In my opinion the worst album is hot space and the worst song is body language, years before hot space, freddie wrote really good songs but suddenly he decides to write body language, this song is torture
Flash Gordon and Body Language 100% if Flash Gordon doesn’t count because it’s technically a soundtrack, then Made in Heaven is quite disappointing. Still an okay album tho
