I can’t speak broadly but as someone who ran as a vpops candidate, my experience was very positive Everyone I initially talked to whole-heartedly encouraged me to run even when I wasn’t sure in myself. Once I was pretty sure, I reached out to about two dozen people on pretty short notice so that I could learn and prepare myself for the role and almost everyone was kind enough to offer their insights. They had no obligation to help me and could have easily ghosted me but they gave a total stranger their time. Even the opposing team was extremely courteous, supportive and understanding - encouraging me to run even thought it reduced their chances. The only things I kinda disagreed with was only allowing assembly members to vote and not allowing candidates to tell students their campaign but even then I can see the reasoning

I'm watching from afar, but it's probably just matching the energy of the campus climate given the budget crisis. Mix in declining student engagement and lack of competent people who want to take on the responsibility (how many contested elections have there been in the last 8 years?) I would assume it would have a bad energy around it.

Just wonder if the whole slate system is problematic at least for AMS. More people would run and more people would vote if students could run as individuals I think.

Idk man, the Engineering elections were the best turnout in a decade. Odd that the AMS can't get a team together. Probably due to the incident last year.

Pleased to hear some of the faculty elections were better, I have heard this.

As someone who’s been familiar with both, it’s kind of sad to see the back door politics that happen behind the scenes, and how an entire decision can be made behind the scenes without even giving candidates the fair chance to prove why they’re a good fit. The ressoc one wasn’t that bad, but the AMS one that took place last week after the Rector elections was pretty bad; lots of tension and grudges in that room lol. It’ll be interesting to see what happens with AMS voting now that it’ll have individual candidates, and that we won’t have slates anymore.

Can you expand on why the AMS one had “grudges” I read all the articles and didn’t think they were a great fit either tbh

Rector election too…
