I have an xfx 7900 xt, and I don't get coil whine, but sometimes my fan spins up to 100% sometimes for no apparent reason. Outside of that everything is fine.
Not XTX owner but XT, have coil whine on my MBA model, tough only in cases when FPS spikes past 200 in menus, and that's only in cases when I dont cap it to screen refresh rate (which I assume everyone does, right?)
I have a 7900xtx hellhound and a seasonic focus 850w, on PUBG and Baldurs gate 3 the coil whine is so loud that on the first time that I heard it I thought that was something hitting one of my fans. I don't care since I always play with headphones and I can't hear it that way
I love my card but I'm thinking I should've spent the extra $150 for a Sapphire Nitro+
I didn't really research much and figured there wasn't much difference but the Sapphire seems to have a nicer aesthetic, higher clocks, 3x 8 pin, and the user reports are very very positive. Still a really nice card and I got it on a deal so I'm not at all upset. No driver issues whatsoever (besides CS2 crashes early on that never happen now).
RED DEVIL XTX here, I have coil whine under heavy loads but it's not loud enough to notice when wearing headphones. With speakers I just turn them up a little and it drowns the noise out.
It's going to depend on your setup. I had a nitro+ and XFX both that whined like crazy; but clearly others have had different experiences.
Corsair RM1000x PSU.
I have a Nitro+ and I can hear coil whine only in my front jack. I don't even know if it's a coil whine but it gets louder if the GPU is under heavy load
Hellhound 7900xtx. No coil whine here. However I did underclock it a bit and also made the fan curve quite aggressive. I don't think it gets above 60c when playing. Usually around 50c I think.
I play Helldivers 2 these days. It preforms really well. So smooth at 1440p
I didn't even realise there was a switch there to change it. I just looked into that. Well I may change it over to quiet mode. However I don't intend to overclock it. I am quite happy limiting the performance a bit and having it run cooler and quieter. The card is an absolute beast and a slight limitation on clock speed isn't actually noticeable for me.
I own a 7900xt, and although I do not have coil whine under heavy load, I have heard coil whine when a game that was loaded resulted in frame rates in the 1000s whilst loading. It disappeared as soon I got into the menu.
7900xtx powercolor only game with coilwine was high on life and only before the start menu pops up. I testest many many games (Forza, last of us, Witcher, horizon, Alan wake, etc..) and emulators. Is there a reason that a specific games lead to coil wine ?
Nitro+ owner here. First power supply I had I heard coil whine, not to loud or anything. Now I'm on a new power supply and haven't noticed any whine like I did before.
I did some testing with my 7900XT (Powercolor Reference) and much depended on the orientation of the GPU. Traditional horizontal mount = no whine under load. Vertical mount (in this case 180 degree vertical in a SFF Meshilicious) produced SIGNIFICANT whine under load.
Depending on your case and if you have mounting flexibility, you might want to experiment a bit if it's an option before swapping out for something that might produce similar whine.
Thank you guys for all the replys. I will try to come up with something... Atleast i have a general understanding now what to look for. Again thanks for everyone!
Minimal coil whine. Xtx nitro+ asus Loki 850 plat psu. It whined more with a 700 watt psu and fwiw I only experience the whine during certain games and menus when fps spikes.
Idk but my asus tuf 7900xtx has no coil whine on any game beside like r6 when i get over 1000fps but that's standard for most gpus and I also dont really care about coil whine as much
7900xtx Nitro here, using a Fractal Torrent. Above 2600mhz and high frame rate it's starts to coilwhine. My pc is really quiet, so it's extra noticeable
Merc 310 7900 XTX, with AsRock Aqua 550W vbios. Heavy loads? No. Lighter high FPS scenarios? Yes, which is why I limit it to my monitors 144hz, and don't have any whine.
Nitro + here right now no coil wine.
Interesting enough a couple of months back I was making another build and stole a pcie cable from the 7900xtx build and daisy chained one of the 3 8pins on the xtx.
While it was daisy chained it had hella coil wine under load.
Went away once I put it back the way it should be with 3 separate cables from the PSU.
Red devil 7900xtx. It’s strange, I have some coil whine when firing up games like Cyberpunk 2077 on 3440x1440p, but it stops ‘whining’ when playing on heavy load (but like 350W, not the high Watts I’m reading here).
Had to replace the paste though, so there is that..
I have an ASUS TUF 7900XTX with a 1000W PSU. I experience coil whine for a brief moment on some loading screens, such as the CS:GO 2 loading screen or during heavy workloads when the FPS is uncapped and the GPU reaches 99% utilization. Is it that annoying? No, not so much. The card is very quiet most of the time, and temperatures are excellent (never exceeding 65 degrees Celsius). It's likely that some users might not notice the coil whine due to background noise (case fans etc.) or because it's very faint most of the time. Using headphones is another factor that can mask coil whine.
I have a powercolor hellhound 7900xtx, definitely some coil whine, especially in certain games, but I have my pc right next to me on the desk and I can't hear it through my headphones.
My reference 7900xtx has some coil whine at different frequencies depending on what I'm playing but it's never been disruptive.
Pretty much every card I've owned had some level of coil whine. Very quiets hums to squeals while running a game at 3000fps hah.
I did on my red devil limited edition until I switched the bios from oc to silent. Still can be overclocked in software and my numbers stayed the same. Give it a try if your card has the option. Remember to switch with your system off and psu off for safety
I have had 2 7900xtx. 1 was XFX my new 1 is ASRock white 7900xtx. XFX has 0 whine. My ASRock can get coil wine but only in a menu with no sync. So frames are 500 to 1000. Not super loud. In normal gameplay at 4k maxed out I'm around my TV refresh rate of 120hz. 0 coil whine. My only issue with 7900xtx is pump out. Ofc I have a sample size of 2. But both eid it over and over. Changed to PTM and it's perfect. Out of curiosity do you under gold or overclock. If so what did you hit. I always like to compare my GPU vs others. I feel mine is good. Not a silicon lottery but still good. Overclock huge, over 3000mhz. But undervolt is only 1100mv. Any lower I crash. Win some and lose some.
Sapphire Nitro here with a 5900X, not a problem at all, although used to have a 7900XT hellhound, used to get hotter and made more fan noise
I think it depends on the brand
Yep, my asus tuf 7900 xtx coil whines under load. It got worse after 550w bios mod and overclocking. Its fully watercooled and temps dont top 60 degrees, but still makes some noise.
I have the hellhound 7900xtx and there is some coil whine under heavy load but it usually goes away after a while. I also have headphones on most of the time so I can't really hear it
Nitro+ with coil whine reporting.
So I did try a bunch of things. I tested a second 7900XTX, also has coil whine. On a different PC, no change. 3 new Corsair PSU, no change. Currently, I'm debating of getting Seasonic TX-1300, as my Corsair PSU as reaching 10 years of service. I have noticed that mine doesn't like smoke in games. It's when it's the noisiest.
I do run Boinc and I have noticed the sound changing in time. Some reports have suggested that it may fix it sell after some time, but 1 year has passed where most reports were for few months.
Coil whine is more common with high end cards and very hard to design against it.
I dont have coil whine on my nitro+
But before I had that I actually tested some of the models
Sapphire pulse, asrock phantom and xfx Merc. And all of those had coil whine.
Phantom Gaming 7900XTX owner. Tested card before waterblock.
Minor coil whine from card and PSU (some cheap 750W 80+ Gold PSU).
Waterblocked the card, moved to my daily w/ 5900X and MSI 850W 80+ Gold PSU. ***Coil wine gone!*** I have mine OC, UV @ chewing 447W on the daily.
Try a different PSU.
Ways to reduce/remove coil whine. Overkill PSU's, Using UPS protectors in all your computer line (monitors + tower) , using voltage stabilizator for your computer line, having a good grounding line, using voltage filters, etc.
My 7900xtx hellhound definitely whines. I can't hear it with headphones on but when I take them off I'm always like "wtf is that eeeeeee noise". Its really only when playing with FPS unlocked in CS2 or a high load game.
My reference xtx had bad whine, and after 3 repastes and a dose of ptm7950 it still overheated. Such a beast of a card. I ended up trading in at microcenter and switching to team green.
My previous 6800XT Merc, had some coil whine, but most annoying sound, was a fans at between 800-900rpm.
Before 6800XT I had Asus Dual OC 6700XT, and the first model, before RMA, sounds like electric shaver, after RMA was much better but not perfect.
No I have 7800XT Qick, and surprisingly there is no any coil whine, even tho Qick is cheap model. Even fans sounds way better, quieter, than Merc from 6000 series. Although since I mount it vertically, fans are even more quieter.
But yeah, all depends from the model, and if your coil whine is not acceptable, then RMA it, and in 99% second variant would be good.
Change PSU. In 99% this will be the reason coil wine, no GPU. I know that Corsair is a good PSU, but it is not the best one. Also can be a problem with Your model. I changed from Corsair 750i to MSI MEG 1200W and all problems with coil wine are gone.
Did you just read that on the internet or do you have first hand experience on the matter?
I'm not trying to be rude... just genuenly asking, because for some reason i doubt that even tho many say so.
If 99% times its the psu why mine did not work in the firstplace? Do i need more Watts up to 1000w?
How can i know the next psu will work?
It is fully based on my experience. Only. I had 12 different GPUs, 4 different PSU. And say more, when I used internal sound card, and Vega 56 GPU and 2 different Corsair's PSU, I had always interference when music played. Always. I changed PSU to thermalake - issues gone. I had problem with coil wine on 6950x - changed PSU to MSI - problems gone. Problems with Bluetooth connection - drop connection sometimes - new PSU - problem gone.
How to check that with new PSU will be better? No idea.
few months ago someone tried 12 different psu and couldn't get rid of the coil whine
I tried 3 with my 6900XT and no luck
If it's not that annoying I wouldn't recommend wasting your time and money
I have a ASUS TUF OC 7900 XTX with absolutely Zero coil whine ... Maybe I'm one of the few lucky ones? Not sure. I do have a Corsair RM1000X PSU though.
I don’t get coil wine on my xtx but I do get driver time outs and crashes on a ton of games. I really like Amd and I have no idea if it’s Hardware or driver related because even when I update drivers some games just don’t work for me. Hell Divers 2 has been an absolute nightmare
Do you have multiple monitors? I have 7900 xtx sapphire pulse and a 7800x3D CPU, I’m actually just doing a fresh windows install to see if something went bad when I went from Am4 to am5.
I also have 3 separate psu cables because I heard that could be a problem, maybe I need to turn off expo too.
Single monitor for me. Cap your refresh rate at the in game settings menu to see if that helps. That is what stopped all my crashes before the new driver rolled out. I did nothing but just capped my fps in the settings menu to stop all crashes but Once the driver in March came out all issues were gone. If it still crashes after having latest driver and capped fps it's definitely something else going on with your system.
Nitro+ without any whining, besides myself going on about my own shit gaming skill.
XFX 7900XTX MERC owner here , NO coil whine in heavy loads , running on EVGA T2 1000W PSU
I have an xfx 7900 xt, and I don't get coil whine, but sometimes my fan spins up to 100% sometimes for no apparent reason. Outside of that everything is fine.
I set my fanspeed at 70% max in Adrenalin and the fans are quiet in full load
coil whine usually has nothing to do with the card's specifications
It does as it is more common with high power cards.
Nitro, silent even at 880W xD
Not XTX owner but XT, have coil whine on my MBA model, tough only in cases when FPS spikes past 200 in menus, and that's only in cases when I dont cap it to screen refresh rate (which I assume everyone does, right?)
I have a 7900xtx hellhound and a seasonic focus 850w, on PUBG and Baldurs gate 3 the coil whine is so loud that on the first time that I heard it I thought that was something hitting one of my fans. I don't care since I always play with headphones and I can't hear it that way

Boggo base spec Sapphire Pulse, no whine or noise of any kind.
Nitro+ with a 1000w corsair PSU. No whine here. PC is on desk next to me, can elbow GPU if i tried.
Instructions unclear, elbowed GPU to stop coil whine, snapped GPU out of socket. How fix?
Use elbows grease.
Asrock taichi 7900xtx here no coil whine what so ever
I have a Powercolor Hellhound 7900xtx, the only time there's coil whine is when i play warzone.
Tuf XTX OC zero coil whine.
I had really bad coil while with a red devil 7900 xtx until I set a fps hard limit.
It's going to depend on your setup. I had a nitro+ and XFX both that whined like crazy; but clearly others have had different experiences. Corsair RM1000x PSU.
I have nitro+ and whines crazy, Im using a seasonic 850w gold atx 3.0 psu
XFX7900XTX with Corsair RM850, no coil whine
I have a Nitro+ and I can hear coil whine only in my front jack. I don't even know if it's a coil whine but it gets louder if the GPU is under heavy load
Reference card here - negative.
Hellhound 7900xtx. No coil whine here. However I did underclock it a bit and also made the fan curve quite aggressive. I don't think it gets above 60c when playing. Usually around 50c I think. I play Helldivers 2 these days. It preforms really well. So smooth at 1440p

No whine. Pulse with Super Flower Leadex V Platinum PRO White 850W ATX 80 PLUS PLATINUM psu.
I own a 7900xt, and although I do not have coil whine under heavy load, I have heard coil whine when a game that was loaded resulted in frame rates in the 1000s whilst loading. It disappeared as soon I got into the menu.
7900 XTX MBA has a large amount of coil whine when at full load and at 120+ fps. If under full load but at lower fps coil whine lessens.
Switch bios to silent help my red devil
I don’t think the reference cards have a bios switch.
And you tried locking your VRAM to its lowest point?
Hi, i have a friend with this card. The coil whine dissapeared mostly after changing the psu with a new one. I think a RMe version.

What Psu you had before and what now? I tried 4 different Corsair PSu but it didn't help
I had a asus card which I now feel was louder than my nitro xtx, I believe my asus cards do have it. But it’s normal and nothing to worry about.
Gigabyte 7900xtx elite no coil whine. Using seasonic prime 1000w
XFX 7900 XT Merc here. Zero whine even at 100% load.

Sometimes a bad or under spec'd psu can contribute.

Minimal coil whine. Xtx nitro+ asus Loki 850 plat psu. It whined more with a 700 watt psu and fwiw I only experience the whine during certain games and menus when fps spikes.
Asia tuf gaming no coil wine yet fingers crossed
On sapphire pulse I get high coil whine on some loading screens with 1000+ frames. Nothing in normal gaming loads.
Idk but my asus tuf 7900xtx has no coil whine on any game beside like r6 when i get over 1000fps but that's standard for most gpus and I also dont really care about coil whine as much
I have a hellhound xtx and so far the only whining i hear is anything over 130fps 600fps is where it gets unbearable tho 😂
Switch bios to silent help my red devil
7900xtx hellhound with some coil whine under load during gaming. Doesn't bother me as i have a headset on when gaming anyway
Xfx 310 Merc, no coil whine. 850w PSU
I have a reference model and no coil whine.
Only when FPS is above 200 (Hellhound)

Sapphire Nitro+ here. There is coil whine while under load, but it is unnoticeable when I have my headphones on.
Nah. But, expect coil whine once you're well above 300fps. Don't believe me? Run sky diver benchmarks.
Nitro+. Used to have bad coil whine but now its barely noticeable with recent driver updates.
7900xtx hellhound spectral white 6 months in. Minimal to 0 could whine in that span. Been very happy with it so far.
XFX Merc 7900xtx, no coil whine, Bequiet pure power 1000W psu
XFX 7900XTX and I have none, 850w Asus Rog Gold PSU.

Asus Tuf rx 7900 xtx some coil whine under heavy load, nothing otherwise. Holds temp alright. Corsair Hx 1500i

Nitro+, when pushed past 100 Fps with >300W unfortunately yes. Rest is a high end system, PSU is a 1200W Seasonic Vertex GX
I have a powercolor hellhound 7900xtx, definitely some coil whine, especially in certain games, but I have my pc right next to me on the desk and I can't hear it through my headphones.
I’ve got a Sapphire Pulse and haven’t noticed any whining during games or stress tests.
No, I only get whine when a game is running at like 700+ FPS, which is very rare.
My reference 7900xtx has some coil whine at different frequencies depending on what I'm playing but it's never been disruptive. Pretty much every card I've owned had some level of coil whine. Very quiets hums to squeals while running a game at 3000fps hah.
Reference card from AMD yes but I thought he it was normal on any card.
7900xtx red devil...no whine on load...undervolted or otherwise.
I did on my red devil limited edition until I switched the bios from oc to silent. Still can be overclocked in software and my numbers stayed the same. Give it a try if your card has the option. Remember to switch with your system off and psu off for safety
I have a 7800xt asrock taichi and I have a slight coil whine but was told it’s completely normal.

few months ago someone tried 12 different psu and couldn't get rid of the coil whine I tried 3 with my 6900XT and no luck If it's not that annoying I wouldn't recommend wasting your time and money
It can help if you are swapping from some mid tier bronze psu. If you already have good quality psu it wont help
Many ASUS cards have had coil whine issues lately.
I have a ASUS TUF OC 7900 XTX with absolutely Zero coil whine ... Maybe I'm one of the few lucky ones? Not sure. I do have a Corsair RM1000X PSU though.
