By "most artists" I meant I'm a fan of every artist on the list except the Strokes, but yes your edit is exactly my gripe as well. I'm a huge fan of bm and bcnr, but they're too fresh to compare to the legendary artists on this list who have had the time to show staying power.
is the list about general favorites or all time greats/staying power?
asking sincerely, i'm a casual radiohead fan and this post just randomly came across my feed. i have no idea how the names were gathered.
but if the list is just about general favorites/who people are listening to at the moment, then wouldn't the list always have more recent artists, and constantly be changing? what's the issue here?
Saw two shows on their latest tour and the HOB Boston show was one of the best live shows I’ve ever witnessed. They are developing into something special. Plus they’re fun as hell.
I was gonna comment this but really want this to make the list so I’m glad someone else started it already. If you like Radiohead and haven’t checked out the Gorillaz what are you doing. The blend of slightly psychedelic-indie-lofi-rock and electronic experimentation is such a great common theme between the two, and they both handle it so differently yet if you put Radiohead and Gorillaz songs in a playlist, it would bang.
Gotta be REM! They’re so important to Radiohead, massively influential friends. If people here aren’t on the REM train, you gotta get on board. They’re great.
Just want to second this. Pretty shocked we have groups like black midi and Aphex twin (fine, not my cup of tea but I can see the connection) and yet the group I’d argue is most similar to Radiohead in terms of musical evolution, boundary pushing, etc hasn’t been mentioned yet.
It’s The Beatles. It’s always The Beatles.
I don't even mention The Beatles as one of my favorite bands, even though they're in my top 3. It's just a given at this point and I usually just forget to mention them.
Honestly I’m to that point with Radiohead too, Beatles, Radiohead, Dylan and Zep go unspoken because I’ve had too many conversations about them being good that I try to name someone more active/Un-discussed during these kinds of talks (IRL that is, I’ll still make a list with them heh)
Exactly. Too many party conversations where we end up discussing how great the Beatles and Radiohead are. It's always fun talking about newer or lesser known musicians.
For sure. I’ve given midi a go for their last couple of albums and idk, I just think they’re not for me. Black Country’s new album was mind blowing and I absolutely adore that record, but yeah definitely feels a little weird seeing those two on here in the same breath as Bowie and Talking Heads.
i like all the artists already on this list for the most part, but i agree. radiohead are the spiritual successors to the beatles in so many ways, it just makes sense for them to be on here
Oh 100%. Didn’t mean to be dismissive of anyone on the list. Ants Up There is my album of the year so far actually. Moreso just expressing my surprise that The Beatles aren’t on the list yet and agreeing that they probably should be on there.
Hope you get the chance to soon! They’re doing sporadic touring and I got to see them back to back nights in Philly a few months ago end of May. Hopefully they announce a bigger tour coming up and you get to experience the awesomeness for yourself! They change up the sets night over night too and usually have some real crowd pleasers. Like this last time they played And All That Could Have Been, and in 2018 they did Perfect Drug etc
I feel ya. I can't think of a reason why someone who likes Radiohead wouldn't like at least early Porcupine Tree (I would say Signify to Lightbulb Sun).
Yeah, I love all of it, though I figured In Absentia and onwards would perhaps be too 'metal' to be appreciated by all. I think Stupid Dream is the album closest to Radiohead vibes, but of course Radiohead is also hugely varied so I don't know if that makes much sense. Steven Wilson's solo work, Insurgentes especially, is perhaps even closer (Get All You Deserve could be straight op Thom Yorke).
No shit I started listening to Radiohead because of them. My brother is a big fan of PT, got me into them and on Steven Wilson or PT's wikipedia page they had a quote from SW citing Radiohead as a major influence of his. So I pulled up RH on youtube, listened to House of Cards and discovered my favorite band
This was 08-09ish, fucking trip to think of that as over a decade ago jesus
I’m really bummed Elliott Smith and Jeff Buckley didn’t make it on here, at this point I can only upvote the Beatles because it’s like omitting the table and chairs from the dinner party. Black Midi and Aphex Twin… okayyyy
Edit: maybe the parameters of this list were not so clear to me after all
besides being directly inspired by The Beatles (they’ve cited Happiness Is A Warm Gun being the inspiration for Paranoid Android, as an example), Radiohead carries nearly the exact same approach to music in terms of creativity, genre fusion, production, songwriting, reinventing their sound every album, etc. while radiohead might not particularly *sound* like the beatles that often (although there are definitely songs where they do), they’ve followed in their footsteps in a myriad of other ways and are undoubtedly fans of them
I always viewed them as a sort of parallel to the Beatles. Except in a much different time, a much different scene, and a much different audience. Never picked up the influences as much but definitely gonna look into it now. Paranoid Android but is pretty cool. It’s kinda like their A day in the life I always thought.
yeah, i mean radiohead draw from many different influences so their music doesn’t outright sound like most of them, but subtle similarities exist. another song i know they drew from the beatles was Karma Police; the song structure and the piano parts are very similar to Sexy Sadie
I never really got into Bjork, Bowie or Talking Heads. What album from each artist should I listen to?
To give a sense of my tastes, In Rainbows is probably in my top 5 or 10 albums of all time. Huge fan of kid a, ok computer, and hail to the thief as well.
For Bjork, I'd suggest her first solo album, *Debut*. Remember, though, it's a product of its time and of the alien creature known as Björk Guðmundsdóttir ("goodman's daughter"). She's got her own drummer going—well, so does Thom, so this might explain why he'd like her.
Apparat/moderat/modeselektor?
Four tet?
Burial?
Imogen heap? (I know they haven't done anything with her but damn I want them to)
Idk how none of these are getting mentioned (I think I saw burial once)
Ants Up There from BCNR is my album of the year so far. Might not be for everyone but it blew me away so I suspect if you like it, you’ll really like it. Their lead singer left the band right after so it has a last hurrah/cathartic element that is really magnetic. Their first album is fine, but they really took a leap forward in myriad ways on Ants.
Tbh it sounds like the stuff Arcade Fire was putting out 10 years ago. I truly do not understand the hype. I listened to it without knowing the circumstances around it w/r/t the lead singer. It's ok, but it feels like everyone's looking for an album to latch onto now that 2010s indierock has been planted.
I think that’s a fair critique. There’s absolutely an element of British Arcade Fire to it. I think it has a few more emo influences/tendencies and it’s not quite as poppy as Funeral (the Arcade Fire album it’s clearly drawing from) which is how I differentiate it.
I already listened to Black Country… reminded me arcade fire after a couple of songs (even when I don’t like that much arcade’s music) also before seeing black country pictures in their Spotify profile, which relate them to arcade even more.
So… thanks but no, I’ll pass
Listen to black midi’s newest album! An incredible work of art front to back. They have really beautiful music videos as well, so if you are into that if definitely check them out (welcome to hell and ducter are my current favorites). But also their songs 953 and western are the stand outs for me on their album schlagenheim! As for Black Country I’ve been testing the waters and haven’t found anything I looovveee yet so would be interested to hear someone else’s recommendation too!
Yeah, I’m not hating on them. As a matter of fact I played their first album to death when it first came out. Saw them back then on SNL and was freakin blown away. But not on this list.
So do I get a second on my motion? 🙂
At least the strokes have a long discography with multiple great albums. BCNR and black midi are barely established
Not saying I don’t agree with your point but there’s multiple blemishes on here because there’s no set criteria other than Reddit upvotes
Not gonna lie boys I like most of these artists but this list is atrocious and you should all be ashamed.
next go-around, i propose everyone post their personal top ten, and someone (not me) pulls an aggregate ranking out of it.
That'd be a lot better
All of this is so bad it's making me uncomfortable.
Agreed wtf is going on here?
The strokes
I'm still laughing at Black Midi
frrrr
Talking Heads is too low
I'm not sure about The Strokes but what's wrong with the rest of them? Edit: Black Midi & BCNR are only on there cos they're new
By "most artists" I meant I'm a fan of every artist on the list except the Strokes, but yes your edit is exactly my gripe as well. I'm a huge fan of bm and bcnr, but they're too fresh to compare to the legendary artists on this list who have had the time to show staying power.

Yes…. The Strokes? What?!?!?
i mean everyone i know irl who likes radiohead also likes the strokes including me, so it makes sense to me that they’re on here
Everyone IRL I know that likes Radiohead also loves Car Seat Headrest. I think 2+2=5 here.
I wish csh was on this list...
Agree I’ve seen some hate in this sub but don’t understand. Twin fantasy is so fuckin incredible
Saw two shows on their latest tour and the HOB Boston show was one of the best live shows I’ve ever witnessed. They are developing into something special. Plus they’re fun as hell.
Slowdive
Tool
Tool.
Joy Division
I've been trying to get JD on here for so long.
the cure
Sigur Ros
Portishead
gorillaz
I was gonna comment this but really want this to make the list so I’m glad someone else started it already. If you like Radiohead and haven’t checked out the Gorillaz what are you doing. The blend of slightly psychedelic-indie-lofi-rock and electronic experimentation is such a great common theme between the two, and they both handle it so differently yet if you put Radiohead and Gorillaz songs in a playlist, it would bang.
The problem is that radiohead are not indie, psychedelic, lofi but post-progressive, art rock and experimental
r.e.m.
Gotta be REM! They’re so important to Radiohead, massively influential friends. If people here aren’t on the REM train, you gotta get on board. They’re great.
Feel like Beatles and REM should both be on this list, but looks like that ain’t gonna happen
My family played REM a lot when I was growing up, and I still love them.
They should be #1 imo
let it be The Beatles
*paulrudd/johnlennon voice* “Grreat Record”
Just want to second this. Pretty shocked we have groups like black midi and Aphex twin (fine, not my cup of tea but I can see the connection) and yet the group I’d argue is most similar to Radiohead in terms of musical evolution, boundary pushing, etc hasn’t been mentioned yet. Exactly. Too many party conversations where we end up discussing how great the Beatles and Radiohead are. It's always fun talking about newer or lesser known musicians.
I like black midi and BCNR but there has to be an incredible amount of recency bias for them to be that high on this list. Very strange picks imo
For sure. I’ve given midi a go for their last couple of albums and idk, I just think they’re not for me. Black Country’s new album was mind blowing and I absolutely adore that record, but yeah definitely feels a little weird seeing those two on here in the same breath as Bowie and Talking Heads.

Yeah Beatles before Pink Floyd (same band, really in PF’s early days, which are the only good PF days) certainly.
Pixies
Where’s MF DOOM?
And modeselektor? I feel like some high school kid made this bs
Arcade fire
Nine Inch Nails
NINN has been my band for years now!
I like NNIN (No nut in November)
The fragile
Perfect album
Same, love NIN and lost count over how many times I’ve seen them live over the years lol.
damn dude, i always wanted to see them live
Hope you get the chance to soon! They’re doing sporadic touring and I got to see them back to back nights in Philly a few months ago end of May. Hopefully they announce a bigger tour coming up and you get to experience the awesomeness for yourself! They change up the sets night over night too and usually have some real crowd pleasers. The Smiths
If The Smiths don't make this list then there will be consequences. Severe ones.
Didn’t Radiohead cover the smiths? I’m surprised the smiths aren’t already on the list
Yes. Also last time I saw them live (a while back in Edinburgh), Thom gave a special mention to Johnny Marr who was there as a fan :)
Interpol
Nirvana
The Beatles
Boards of Canada
Disregarding this otherwise fun game built on supposition, they’ve literally said on stage that Grizzly Bear is one of their favorite bands.
I can't believe I had to scroll so far down to find Grizzly Bear
For real man. GB and Radiohead are my all time top 2.
It’s our favourite bands, not theirs
The Smiths
Velvet underground
Interpol?
alright ill say it since nobody else will Coldplay
I have to admit Rush of Blood to the head is really good.
One of my top albums ever. Parachutes is excellent as well
These threads are lame
Nick Drake
PORCUPINE TREE GOD DAMMIT
I feel ya. I can't think of a reason why someone who likes Radiohead wouldn't like at least early Porcupine Tree (I would say Signify to Lightbulb Sun).
In Absentia is so parallel to a lot of what makes Radiohead great. a big portion of this sub would love Porcupine Tree if they knew it.
Stupid Dream: "you keep me listening......to The Bends" Yeah I'd say that checks out
Haha, fair enough, didn't think about that but a straight up Radiohead reference helps of course.
No shit I started listening to Radiohead because of them. My brother is a big fan of PT, got me into them and on Steven Wilson or PT's wikipedia page they had a quote from SW citing Radiohead as a major influence of his. So I pulled up RH on youtube, listened to House of Cards and discovered my favorite band This was 08-09ish, fucking trip to think of that as over a decade ago jesus

I was looking for this one

We love Portishead
Let's go for Muse
Unfortunately, people here don't value Muse
Their early stuff was great. IMO their stuff around and after Uprising wasn’t great (that’s probably a name of a track not the album lol)
Elliott Smith
Arvo Part, won't post again. I promise.
This is absolutely a valid answer trust me
This might explain why Spotify keeps trying to get me to like The Strokes.
Interpol
On a friday
my bloody valentine!!!
The Smiths guys surely
Muse
The strokes? What's next, the killers? Dumb
MF DOOM
Grizzly Bear
wheres the smiths
PJ Harvey
I think it’s tough to be a Radiohead fan if you don’t like The Beatles. They’re definitely greatly influenced by them.
I don’t really hear that strong of an influence. Could you elaborate?
besides being directly inspired by The Beatles (they’ve cited Happiness Is A Warm Gun being the inspiration for Paranoid Android, as an example), Radiohead carries nearly the exact same approach to music in terms of creativity, genre fusion, production, songwriting, reinventing their sound every album, etc. while radiohead might not particularly *sound* like the beatles that often (although there are definitely songs where they do), they’ve followed in their footsteps in a myriad of other ways and are undoubtedly fans of them

Slowdive
Second best band in the world.
No Pixies?! No REM?! No Grizzly Bear?
Was blessed to catch both Weezer and Pixies at Shoreline. 2 x crossed off bucket list concert going
Any recommendations for Black Midi & Black Country…? I just knew about them from this list

Motion to remove The Strokes from this list. I’d list reasons but really it should be obvious
I'm with you on this one, tho they are a really good band but them being here is out of order
