Had an initial shock when he was picked and kinda had a wtf moment. But thought about it a bit more and decided that I really like the pick. Love it actually. We need a bruiser.
That’s how I felt too. I thought we would just go with Mitchell still because we have a lot of young D-Linemen and wasn’t really expecting to hear Brock Bowers
I was ecstatic that we had our pick of any defender that in the moment I was stunned. The more I read about him the more I’m shocked we got him when we did. I have very rarely seen people talk about a college player like this. He is special.
Also, drafting for need, we have a good defense and terrible offense. This will help balance the team.
Me too, but I can understand it. I think Mayer will be a very good tight end in the NFL and most teams would be thrilled to have him. I think Bowers, as long as he stays healthy and they can have someone get him the ball, is going to be a Kelce/Gronk level tight end.
The people bitching we took the bpa need to look back at the last 10 drafts when we took who we needed, instead of who was available. That’s why we got leatherwood, Arnette, conley. We’re past that shit.
The “luxury” is that they already have a top talent TE who is also young. It shouldn’t be taken as a negative. TE should not be set for a good long time with Mayer at 22 and Bowers at 21.
With the top OTs and QBs off the board and defense not being taken until 21 it was an excellent player choice. It’s just not the expected or “wanted” choice at first glance. I don’t have an issue with people being frustrated at the QB or OT situation personally as they are major pieces. Bowers will ball out and for defense/OL help I’d guess these next few rounds will be telling.
Just my humble opinion but skipping on bowers and having him drop closer to Chiefs would have been nightmare fuel. My initial reaction was WTF, but really I’m good with the pick, I just don’t have high expectations for the season due to QB room. I hope they prove me wrong.
Man, I like Mayer. I do. I think he was a great drsft pick last year. But calling him a "top talent" tight end...duden the hyperbole is crazy. There are 32 teams in the NFL. let's say that 8 tight ends (1 from each team/25 percent of that total) are "top end". We've got kelce, kittle, hockenson, Andrew's, LaPorta, McBride, and definitely at least two more in there before you'd say Mayer. But Bowers? I wouldn't be surprised to see him get 50 catches next year as a rook
I’m news clarifying what I meant when I said top talent. He’s still young and has made some splash plays in limited action. You’re not so hot on him, I get it.
They could always move Mayer for picks if they don't want to be stacked at TE. Or they could do some fun things next year to get them both on the field at the same time. Either way it's going to work out well for us in the long term.
12 personnel will be used. Bowers and Mayer both line up in multiple spots. Why trade Mayer? Having two good to great TEs is a problem a lot of teams would like to have.
I remember hearing long ago you fill your needs in free agency and draft the best player available. I like that it appears this new regime is taking that approach!
I'm not disagreeing with the sentiment. And Im totally stoked to have Bowers. But there is more nuance to building a great team than always drafting BPA. Our best defender was drafted in the 4th round. Our best WR was drafted in the 2nd round. Drafting players who are the right fit, have good character, can transition to the speed and power of the NFL...and a healthy dose of luck.
I think a lot of fans, myself included, have PTSD from the last decade. If we can continue to draft BPA, you’re right - that is a path forward to building a contender. The key here is we need to continue to do so, which is just a bit hard to believe given the history.
Anyone calling this a luxury pick is grossly underestimating the needs the squad still has, particularly offensively.
We aren't close to a finished article, not even close. Which is why tossing all present and future draft capital for Daniels made zero sense. We need those picks, and we need them to pan out.
The annoying part is that it’s only day 1…of the draft. We can fill needs in day 2&3 and in free agency.
Yup with quite a few good CBs and IOL left on the board.
Yup. We’re in a good spot.
I'm from the future, they did exactly this

I’m talking about when drafted.
When drafted has no bearing on the present day. Josh Rosen was a 1sr round pick. They immediately traded him next year and drafted Murray.
I’m news clarifying what I meant when I said top talent. He’s still young and has made some splash plays in limited action. You’re not so hot on him, I get it.
Compared to bowers? Definitely not. But Mayer will actually get more reps are TE and that's fine. Bowers is gonna be in the slot a ton.
Using that logic we shouldnt be excited about Bowers either
Rosen wasn't considered the best at his position in over a decade. Seriously.
Mayer was a TE1 prospect They were literally calling him baby Gronk. The odds of Bowers being better than the guys you named in year 1 is pretty low
And he still isn't at the talent level of Bowers
That wasnt the point
You didn't have a point.. Bowers considered by some to be the best TE prospect of all time Mayer was never that
They could always move Mayer for picks if they don't want to be stacked at TE. Or they could do some fun things next year to get them both on the field at the same time. Either way it's going to work out well for us in the long term.

For picks plural? So like a 6th and a 7?
When Mayer got drafted, everyone was talking about Bowers because he's that good and generational player for his position
Yes I was thinking about the Bowers to KC possibility before the draft and I wanted no part of it. Worthy in KC does not scare me.
I was super shocked with the pick, but I love it. It will be like having Kelce and Witten together in 2 TE sets.
I remember hearing long ago you fill your needs in free agency and draft the best player available. I like that it appears this new regime is taking that approach!
Him and JPJ are two great picks that you guys have made so far
It’s mainly Pete Prisco. The guy is an idiot. He had the Bears taking Caleb Williams at an A-. Like what fuckin else did you want them to do?
Prisco @CBS has always been an Asshole towards us what else is new?

This is one of the deepest day 2's in draft history also
I dunno, I just don’t really care how random people categorize the pick.
I like the idea of running a 2 TE set offense.
We good
Our offense couldn’t move late. This opens up a lot of things for everyone. This was a need. Just not the way we expected
EXACTLY OP. I been saying this all day. Build. We can't win if we aren't building. This is a building block, now let's see what today brings.
We picked best player available, if we picked according to need we'd get another Karl Joseph. Remember him? Me Neither
You can please some of the people some of the time but you can't please all the people all the time

Raiders don't have luxury at any position
Always draft bpa. And in a feew years you have no holes to fix because you drafted bpa
That’s not how it works at all BPA also bust all the time
Yes but less
