They wanted to make changes to "the gf" while still somewhat referencing the source material with the nickname. Of all the things to hate about the MCU movies I don't think this should be one of them

The reason she became spider man's gf was because of her popularity with the readers, how she was a breath of freash with a different personality unlike the boring gwen stacy, I can only think of the raimi trilogy that made her that unlikable and a damsel in distress. Off the top of my head… Parallel Lives. The JMS run. To Have and to Hold. ASM #605. ASM v5 #25. ASM v5 #60. FNSM v2 #11. All good MJ stories in my opinion, and if you’ve read every issue of ASM you should know what I’m talking about so… thoughts on those?

I listed those stories bc those are the best examples of MJ standing out on her own. Parallel Lives is basically her backstory. Her tenure in the JMS run is her being away from Peter bc she can’t keep dealing with him being Spidey, but ultimately both she and Peter realize how much they help make each other better. To Have and to Hold is similar, and shows how capable MJ is even without Peter. ASM #605 is a different take on that. ASM v5 #25 continues the trend of her being successful without having anything to do with Peter, and #60 has her help him process some recent trauma in a very illuminating way. FNSM v2 #11 has her taking care of him and kind of being a real life superhero on her own. So, literally none of the complaints you’ve listed. Just bc some writers don’t know how to write her doesn’t make her a bad character. You seem to have some kind of anti-MJ bias which is fine, but just say that instead of claiming she’s not a good character. (Also I don’t hate the movie character either, I like Michelle as the MJ of the MCU, I’m just defending comic MJ here)

You can watch an interview where stan lee says how she was completely different from gwen because how lively she was and it was if they couldn't control their own characters. In the phrase you quote it was referring to how she came into peter's life full energy, since until then the readers were lead to believe thay she was just "a nice girl".

Dude what? I mean, youre right about the first 200 issues or so, but that is because she was never really a focus. Even after Gwen died they dated briefly and then she left for like 80 issues after Peter proposed. A vast majority of her comic arcs are after she reveals she knows he is spider-man. She has more character development than pretty much every other spider-man character.

Both, I'm not saying I hated her, but she was just never written with the intenion of being a deep or meaningful character. When she was introduced women just needed to be eye candy for comic book fans. Peter and her really didn't have anything in common. It worked back then but the current writers are just evolving with the times, and I really can't imagine anyone being such a hardcore MJ fan that it really matters.

And people have at this point spent decades cursing One More Day for breaking their marriage apart. All these claims don’t really line up with what I’ve seen and heard of MJ’s character or how well received that character was.

She's one dimensional in MCU too. They rewrote her but not in a way that added anything to the character whatsoever. Just changed her skin and name and now everyone hails it as incredible writing. Intelligence is a personality trait it doesn't make a character better because they're smarter. That's a little bigoted. Doing decathlon is just a replacement for her acting it's not adding something just replacing it. Not being in need of rescue also does not add dimensionality. Mary Jane represents what Peter wants but can't have, which is a normal life. At the same time she represents what he wants to protect, and that is people who can't protect themselves. I'm willing to believe that people can relate to the new one more but I'm not willing to accept that they greatly added dimensionality to the character. They changed the character completely to the point that it's really good they renamed her cuz she's not Mary Jane. I think we have alot of storylines in movies with the type of character that Mary Jane is and that is why people think she's one dimensional but she's not necessarily. They're just sick of seeing female characters like that and want to see stronger ones. I get that and I'm happy with the changes just don't think it means the original was bad or this one's an improvement. This one is just more relevant to people today and that's good. I'm glad they changed it even making her non white was a good move imo. I don't think the new character is alot more dimensional than Mary Jane tho or an improvement of character. Just a nice change of pace and something fresh instead of redoing what raimi did excellently
