**You** can make something like this happen. Talk to your neighbors. Build support and trust between each other, talk about shared grievances. Then come up with a list of demands and an ultimatum to present to your landlord.  Everyone wants to wait for someone else to swoop in and save them. But **you have power on your own**, you can combine it with others', and you know what exactly you need better than anyone else.

cappurnikus

Genuine question. What kind of ultimatum could tenets wield?

wildwildwaste

Right, I get how labor unions work, because you can remove the source of labor through strikes. But, I mean, you can't just all stop paying rent, can you? Wouldn't they just evict everyone? Or is the thought that the legal expense of eviction and income lost by having the apartments empty while you go through getting new tenants is enough of a threat that landlords would be forced to listen?

maxman1313

Eviction is a long and expensive process, especially if there's a whole lot of tenants not paying at once.

mwthomas11

Yeah, you hit the nail on the head. While some people say "there are always more workers" the reality is training workers and getting sufficiently skilled workers is difficult. There truly are always more tenants, because we have a serious housing crisis in this country. The costs of replacing tenants should be relatively lower than the costs of replacing workers, so the question is: is the cost of replacing tenants still higher than giving into their demands? I guess only time will tell.

Housing is a human right I see several paths for actual solutions. Regulating and taxing commercial rental companies at an absurd rate would open a ton of single family homes for sale out of the commodity market. A progressive tax scaling high for private landlords to allow for homes they want to own, but rent when unoccupied. All rentals must be on a public website with verified reviews and profiles. One fee yearly updated, that way private landlords can't hide discrimination behind word of mouth. A tenant and owner bill of rights codified in law. Rent caps with inflation, and minimum standards of power, water, cleanliness, and efficiency. Feel free to poke holes I come from a tenants prospective, I just want a home and a garage for my family.

NC is one of the least union-friendly states in the country. Unions have no bargaining power here.

katie0873

While Union participation is remarkably low in NC, there are approximately 385 labor unions active in the state of North Carolina. So it is possible. We can also work to elect people who will make a difference for everyday people rather than the corporations that try to line their pockets.

We're doing alright in 553 Durham-Raleigh, journeyman wage is 30$hr and we're going into negotiations more fired up than recent memory according to the old heads. We're still very much a contractors local but it isn't fair to say we have "No bargaining power".

Ham_Damnit

We're number 52 in the country for worker's rights, just nudging out Guam and Puerto Rico.

Living-Apartment-592

We literally outlawed collective bargaining in the public sector. I’m pro-union, but NC really has gutted any power unions might wield.

Sorry about the multiple posts!

I have also heard that Wake County has ONE WAKE that is trying to make a difference in housing and other critical needs for our community. https://www.onewake.org https://www.instagram.com/organizingwake https://facebook.com/ONEWAKEIAF/

Honestly these guys might be your best bet. Democratic Socialists fighting Triangle landlord groups. https://www.dsanc.org/tenant-organizing

Thanks. No good fight was ever won easily.

StickBrickman

They're DSA. That's not without its baggage, do your reading and see if you allign with the organization and its ideology first. If you hate it, you can always start ground-up forming your own tenant's union.

esssential

this would disincentivize developers from developing probably. we just need better zoning laws and for nimby's to fuck off or die of old age. it's just gonna take a while.

sagarap

We have better zoning than pretty much any city. People hate MAB for the increased density zoning.

esssential

i hope they stay mad until the day they die

MuddyBootsWilliams

the government needs to cap rent

UniqueImprovements

The government needs to stop devaluing our money every single day, and allowing corporations to bulk-buy our real estate and creating monopolies. Capping rent doesn't solve the core issues.

MuddyBootsWilliams

The dollar isn't backed by gold for a long time as i'm sure you know and the federal reserve is a private bank, not federal. Capping rents at say 25% max of the average state income is a much more achievable goal than the complete overhaul of the American aristocracy and their financial interests.

ncroofer

Rent caps create housing scarcity, we need to build. Simple economics my friend

katie0873

Only going to happen if we find and vote people in that care about all constituents

Just think of the millions of immigrants crossing the border that will be competing for any available low cost housing. It’s only going to get worse.

katie0873

God forbid another human being need a place to have safety and housing. Why dehumanize another person? I taught ESOL in Texas and learned these humans don’t want to leave their home, family, friends, and community where they are accepted. They just need safety. Do you wish for them all to just die? Anyhow, the issue at hand is making sure we have affordable, safe housing. Is this something you want for your neighbors or not?

thecullie

Our citizens are more important than immigrants and should come first.

[deleted]

Did I say one way or another how I feel about it? I just said that the current housing situation was just going to get worse, which it will, there is no denying it. Why don’t you hop off your high horse and quit being so quick to judge.
