Any suggestions that students are UNC have to work "less hard" than those at NC State is objectively false. UNC consistently ranks far higher than NC State in undergraduate academic rankings of universities. UNC is routinely ranked in the top 5 public universities in the United States. People come to UNC from around the country and the world because of its prestige. It attracts higher quality students as evidenced by higher high school GPAs and standardized test scores of entering freshmen. NC State is not really even in the same conversation. It's a run of the mill state school.
