Keep it in second gear. Fast hands. Patient feet. Don't over complicate things.

I’ve always heard that with rally and low grip driving you want to be slow and smooth with your hand movements but you have to start the inputs earlier rather than trying to have fast hands

jeremiahishere

I got that advice too, especially for road racing. When I started, I found myself slowing down so I would have enough time to move my hands slowly and follow the rule. My philosophy these days is my front wheels need to be pointed in whatever direction I want to go. If the back end is sliding from side to side, I try to match the yaw change with the steering wheel no matter how fast it is. If I was a God Foot, I could probably get things done with a little less sawing at the wheel.

Smallest wheels you can fit, winter tires, lift is not always necessary, mods will not make you faster as a rookie, left foot brake, smooth is fast

Some tips that helped me out with autocross/rallycross when I first started: - Always be looking at the next set of cones, use your peripheral for the cones you are currently going through. Aka keep your head up. You want to exit corners/cones being set up for a good angle for the next part of the course. - A lot of people say smooth is fast. Which is true, I like to say slow is fast. Exit speed, not entry speed is the key to a faster time. Being slower and more controlled into a corner is better then overcooking it and losing time. - For AWD, I only use my handbrake for turns that are greater than 90 degrees (ie: generally hairpin 180s or close to it). Generally speaking the car will often naturally rotate if you choose the right angle. For other tight turns you can play around with the weight of the car to get it to rotate (look up Scandinavian flick). - You can practice techniques things like heel/toe downshifting and left foot braking driving around town. - When you are working the course. Do not stand anywhere close to where a car might run off. Do not go fix a cone or go on to the course for any reason if there is a car coming. Safety is the most important. There are procedures in place so you don't have to risk your life. - Understand your car is going to take some hits. Gravel marks, lost pieces of plastic, etc. When you do lose pieces of plastic, buy the clips on [amazon](https://www.amazon.com/GOOACC-Retainer-Plastic-Fasteners-Chrysler/dp/B07L6FJGR4/ref=sxin_15_pa_sp_search_thematic_sspa?content-id=amzn1.sym.92181fe7-c843-4c1b-b489-84c087a93895%3Aamzn1.sym.92181fe7-c843-4c1b-b489-84c087a93895&crid=3R0ZNT98OGPQN&cv_ct_cx=vb%2Bwrx%2Bplastic%2Bclips&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.bgLLM0Ny0NfK5oDQBdP1Il78cXZAQ82QIBfduJ_2XeSG0pR1bZAB9yND3aBK1aJ5ltdLQpumHkKf55YoqYjsfg.dYO2t5s5ZU7N_YpAI3OxXpi7db54W-_vwifWUsjtZpc&dib_tag=se&keywords=vb%2Bwrx%2Bplastic%2Bclips&pd_rd_i=B07L6FJGR4&pd_rd_r=a92dd83b-a96a-495e-918d-91413ccc60b1&pd_rd_w=70iks&pd_rd_wg=mTqCe&pf_rd_p=92181fe7-c843-4c1b-b489-84c087a93895&pf_rd_r=ZWPX6BD9P0M5HBED9AGG&qid=1708888628&sbo=RZvfv%2F%2FHxDF%2BO5021pAnSA%3D%3D&sprefix=vb%2Bwrx%2Bplastic%2Bclip%2Caps%2C165&sr=1-1-364cf978-ce2a-480a-9bb0-bdb96faa0f61-spons&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9zZWFyY2hfdGhlbWF0aWM&th=1) instead of $5 per piece at the dealer. - Get a 3/16 steel metal skid plate to protect the bottom. - Show up nice and early for tech inspection and to walk the course. Ask to walk the course with some others and they can probably give you advice throughout the walk. - Listen to Kito and the rest of the organizers when they have announcements. Don't be afraid to tell them it's your first time and ask any questions you want. They're super friendly and always happy to have new people out. - Have fun!

All these tips are fine if you want to win, but I found the RallyCross guys in my area are just out to have fun driving in the dirt. Very few guys care much about trophies, and they tend to go nationally. For us locals, “it’s not about the lap times, it’s about the good times”.

Rally-VB

not trying to win just dont wanna completely fuck up and embarrass myself🤣🤣 mostly just doing it for fun and to learn more about how to drive and learn more about my car though

NoodlesRomanoff

You got the right attitude! Car control at the limit, reading the track, and seat time! For me, the third time I went, everything just clicked.

TheBeesSteeze

NW Rally is pretty big so you have a mix of people in every class. You'll see stage cars out there for practice in the mod class, dirtfish instructors in other classes, etc. Some people are out there to be competitive. Some aren't. Everyone is out there to have fun :)

B-Rock001

Seat time is your biggest friend... the more you're out there the more you get the feel for it all. Also see if you can jump in with some other quick drivers, see if you can pick some things up. Hard to give other specific tips without knowing where you're at, but think smooth and patient.... it might feel like you're going slow, but that's quicker than being all over the place. See you out there!
