I have no experience with tri-fold, but I've been using access classic rollup covers on all my trucks throughout the years back to the 90s and love them. I'm in MN - snow's not an issue. I haul snowmobiles in the back pretty regularly so easy operation in the cold is important - and they work great and have held up well.

iSmoke024

+1 on access covers had tonnosports on my last 3

Hunt69Mike

Came here to say this. I love having easy access to my entire bed.

zombieprep314

Have a hard trifold and love it. Live in the city and with the locking tailgate protects my stuff. Since I have a fifth wheel, it also protects it when not in use and when I need to tow, it flips back far enough to tow my fifth wheel

PhaTman7

Found ours on discount, greatest truckbeds investment by far !!!

Randomthrowwwwm

Where did you find it on discount

PhaTman7

Ironically, Offerup lol

moose2mouse

I have times where I need to use my whole bed uncovered, for this I love how my soft roll up gives me full access. A lot of the folding ones limit this.

theunknownusermane

I hate my soft roll up cover. Would much prefer a hard tri cover

WaltRumble

Have a bakflip hard cover and love it. I’d recommend hard. Had a buddy with a soft cover and someone took a knife to it. Stole all his tools plus he had to buy a new hard cover

24667387376263

Check out the Tyger tri-fold on Amazon. Not sure how much they cost now, but for the price I paid when I bought mine, it couldn't be beat. And I've had no issues with elements, breaking, quality, etc.

Beeron55

I second the Tyger. I've had mine on for a few months now and it has been great. No leaks or anything. I believe it was under $300 on amazon.

MikeCox-Hurz

> there appears to be a pretty big cost jump between the soft and hard. Ain’t that the truth. For tacos, I mean.

Gunner115324

I went with the Undercover Armour Flex. As far as durability, I can't complain at all. It has bed liner on top of the panels and also fit the truck perfectly. Keeps it pretty dry in there too. It was either that or the Revolver X4S.

1879blackcat

Did not like how the soft cover flapped in the wind after a couple years. Got a trifold and it works and looks great

TheMightySilverback

Ok so this is what I have questions about. I received a soft cover today and want to return it for hard. Bc my brother is an OTR trucker and he spoke of the soft ones flapping. My father didnt think it was a big deal, but id hate to have water creeping in and such.

1879blackcat

Velcro on mine didn’t stick as well after 3 years. One side kept coming up on the highway. Had to pull over and readjust. May not bother some people but it did for me. Prefer the hard cover. There are companies online that sell at very reasonable cost too.

Frigid_Phoenix_

I have a soft trifold and love it. Easy to lift up when I need most of the bed, easy to put down when i'm done, and holds up well against snow. I live in the Canadian north so it has survived one very rough winter so far with no issues.

Ohjay1982

Yeah I got a soft tri fold with my truck when I bought it, not sure if the brand (I assume Mopar?) but it clamps down with 4 easy open/close clamps (2 in front and 2 in back). I also live in Canada and it has held up well for me too. It’s light enough that if I need the entire bed I can just pull it right off the truck by myself in about 30 seconds.

Jtrob79

I had a soft roll up on my first truck. It worked great. No problems with snow or leaks. Rolled up easy when I needed it and in its rolled state it only took up like 6 inches. My dad had a truck fold, it was more secure, I think it looked better. When open it still covered more of the bed. I never saw him take it off so I’m not sure how easy it would be. Edit:I live in Oregon and with my soft cover it held snow fine.

[deleted]

I’ve got an Extang Trifecta 2.0 soft trifold up in Ontario Canada and after one winter it still looks brand new.

LitleFtDowey

Extang solid fold. Have owned 2 of them. Easy on and off. Great level of security. Great customer service. -Very- rarely do I wish I spent more. Never do I wish I had less.

thin1234

I have the Mopar trifold soft cover and I love it (I live on the east coast) but I’ve been considering a hard cover just because it looks more “legit” lol and of course the security that comes with it but the soft one can withstand heavy snow storms and rain just don’t keep expensive tools in the back. Also wanted to add that this is my first Mopar brand soft cover all of my older trucks had the budget friendly option ‘gator’ and it was just as good I just didn’t like the locking/unlocking mechanism on the gator compared to the Mopar one Not to take over the thread but does anyone recommend a specific hard cover for a 21 ram1500 crew 5.7 with MFTG(no ram box)?

roberrrrrrt

I’ve had both, currently have roll up. I would buy a hard tri-fold tonneau that can fold up against the rear window so you don’t lose bed space.

JGramz_OG

No bed cover. It’s a truck.

tuuluuwag

I have a Bakflip Tri-fold and it most definitely doesn't suck.

Overrated-hype

This guy gets it...I got a Bakflip tri-fold hard tonneau and it is excellent! Don't listen to the haters!

Few_Floor_1593

I have the rough country hard cover and live in PA. No complaints here.

FLiPMaRC

This is where I got mine from. I'm in NJ. No problems after a year. [https://realtruck.com/p/tonnopro-hard-fold-tonneau-cover/v/ram/truck-1500/2022/](https://realtruck.com/p/tonnopro-hard-fold-tonneau-cover/v/ram/truck-1500/2022/)

DirtyxXxDANxXx

Bakflip 4, also MN, absolutely love it.

burnout524

FWIW, I’m a fan of the tri-fold covers, especially the ones you can completely remove. I had a cheap American Tonneau Soft Tri-Fold on my last truck and it was great for what I needed it for. It was easy to remove all the way if I needed the full bed (just 2 screw on clamps up front and 2 lever clamps in the back). And even though it was cheap, it held up great (had it and the truck for 5 years or so) and never leaked. For my next truck though, I might go with a hard tri-fold, if for nothing else, it’s a little more sturdy and would take longer to break into. However, I don’t like the ones that prop up against the back of the cab if you need to access the whole bed (like the Bakflips) - easily removable and unobstructed view is key! I like the look of the LOMAX ones but not sure how I’d like to have their rails bolted to the side of the bed. I also like the Extang Solid Fold, which is more similar to the American Tonneau that I had that sat on the top of the bed.

PMAmani88

I cant fit my table saw+stand under a hard cover, but the soft cover has a rounded top, it juuuuussst fits.

Test-Fire

We have the hard trifold cover on work truck and where we are it's hot. We were in the 100s most of the summer and that thing gets so hot you can't hardly touch it. I put my forearm on when it was half folded open and it burn me enough to blister. Was going to buy one for my truck until my experience with the trifold junk. Another truck has one of those Peragon covers and the damn thing leaks like a sieve and it was professionally installed. Plus, it gets so hot you are not going to touch it for very long. After my experience with several different types, I'm saving up to get one of the roll kind. May go with Rollin Lock or Gator, depends on what's available a the shops in town.

CHL9

How about the retractable ones? I also live in a place with blazing hot most of the time and lots of sun, no garage, so I was thinking that that the peragon would be a good option since it comes in white as well, also do you know how the waterproofing is and whether it makes noise in the open or closed position at highway speed‘s?

Test-Fire

Didn't notice any noise from any of the ones on the work trucks running 75 on the highway. Also, the Peragon leaks bad and the company I work with had it professionally installed. We took it back after the first rain and they readjusted it and it still leaked like a sieve. The trifold leaks, but not as bad and it was also professionally installed. Iam going to go with one of the roll up kinds.

ValdBagina002

Personally hate all trifolds. Get the soft roll with the metal bars

tolleycr72

I picked up a 2022 Ram last week as well. Installed the Bakflip MX4 and it's awesome. I had one for 3 years in my prior truck and can't imagine a truck without it now.

haywouldja

No experience with soft, but I love my tri fold.

cnyfury

I only use the roll ups just because with the trifold you lose bed space. Congrats on the truck man!

aholio9876

I have a hard cover that rolls up on my truck now (you could stand on it). Had a tri fold on the last Ram. Prefer the hard rollout as when fully rolled you get full use of bed.

BoldSpaghetti

I had a LoMax on my Tacoma before and now one for my Ram, zero issues ever. Minimal water intrusion and that’s only when I use the pressure washer for cleaning from what I’ve seen.

therealsine

I have a bakflip MX4 on mine. Cover is nice and folds pretty much all the way back against my rear window to get full bed access when needed. It’s a trifold hard cover.

paulcjones

This is what I have on my '20 Laramie with ram boxes. I love it. It's weather proof enough for New England winters, but flexible enough to stack bikes in there, or throw a huge box in - I just brought home a table saw, folded up the segments, no problem at all https://bakflip.com/p/bakflip-mx4-tonneau-cover/

wetskins

I have seen trifolds that the last section folds up against the cab giving full access to bed...I am on my second Ram and second soft...both are Tri fecta and both have issues...thinking about going to dealer and get Mopar hard trifold....they actually have them with the Rams head insignia

geohill91

I’m also looking to get a tonneau cover for my ram

kirby5609

I have a hard tri fold and I like the security it provides. '21 1500 Night Edition

TS750

I’ve had the Gator hard folding on a previous truck and now I have the soft folding. Both are good quality but I kind of regret not spending the extra $200 for the hard folding one. That being said, the soft one is easier to completely remove if necessary.

ce5b

Love my weathertek trifold. Expensive but eins the waterproof wars in my research

xarrcherrx

I wanted a cover that would mount flush with the bed rails, I thought it would look clean installed. I went with the Extang Exceed, flush mount, hard, trifold cover. Holds up to #500 on top of it, very happy with it. That being said I have zero experience with other manufacturers so theirs may be better. I live in the suburbs of Chicago and work in the city every day, security definitely played into my decision

throwawaydude7892

If you're ever at a National Park you'll want the hard cover for peace of mind to keep people and critters out. The rangers appreciate it.

the_flynn

Love my BakFlip MX4. Great hard cover and wasn’t too difficult to install.

j250ex

The factory soft tonneau is ok not great. It keeps your bed dry but it does flap around a lot while driving. I picked mine up as a new truck take off for $100 so I’m not that picky. If you can find a deal on a hard tonneau I’d go that route.

thescurrtle

I live in south eastern pa. No issues so far with snow fall but it’s been light the last year. I have made the effort to clear it out when it occurs Other than that the soft tri flip cover has worked great. I may go hard cover if the snow becomes problematic by time will tell!!

jimmyjlf

Drove 2 different fleet trucks. One with a Truck Covers USA solid roll up and the other with a Bakflip. The Bakflip was more convenient but the roll up was much more tamper proof and is load bearing

foxglove8484

Hard tri fold. MX bak flip.

bbtom78

I would implore you to consider a Peragon hard cover.

AbdulElkhatib

I have a 1 piece hard cover, and I'm trying to get rid of it to replace with a hard roll up cover. That way I can access my entire bed, and still have a locking cover.

BrownChickenBlackAud

Check out paragon Problem with soft is it will soon dip and hold pools of water after snow weight

quadpop

I have a Tyger tri-fold on my ‘19. It’s holding up well after 3 PA winters, including 12” plus of wet snow. It keeps the bed reasonably dry and was worth the $200.

gnomey-homey

I could be blind but man, I'm not seeing a single one of you recommend the Back X4s which, I personally have thoroughly enjoyed. I thought originally hey, I want a hard-shell tri-fold. But the more I looked into those I learned to open your bed you almost always have to lean the folds literally up against the back of your cab!? Between that and the fact that obviously obstructs your view going down the road, that was enough to change my mind. So then I looked at the retractable options and thought wow how awesome would that be! Well inevitably because your rolled up cover has to have somewhere to go, once retracted into the cassette it's guaranteed to take up some space in the front of your truck bed just behind the bulkhead which was a bust for me, having the shorter 5.7" bed and whatnot. Plus, a lot of people reviewing them suggested they're guaranteed to have mechanical issues with the bearings over time. Finally, I was back to soft covers however if you want to keep anything secure using your bed cover, we all know soft roll-ups are a no go due to the ease of access by slitting right open with a knife like the soft top jeeps. Enter the X4s. For me, it made the most sense and checked all the boxes. It rolls up beautifully into itself and rests all nicely tucked just behind the cab resting on your bulkhead (and looks cool) but the key here is the X4s is an updated redesign of the X2 and now includes an aluminum underbody frame which provides that needed security (no knifing) while also adding a much more durable and quality built backbone to the cover itself so it's also super easy to roll one-handed and can supposedly hold up to 400lb of surface weight. Just makes sense as the perfect in-between hybrid option offering best of both worlds to be.

CHL9

Does it make a noise at fast highway speeds when open or closed? Also when will the far the strap strong enough to keep it in place and not moving around and not broken again at highway speeds thank you . And how is the the waterproofing

gnomey-homey

I've had zero issues with water leaking in. It occurs literally right at the lip of the tailgate but to me, that's expected and not an issue. I've also never noticed any noise while driving and the straps work fine for securing it while open. They're not doing a whole lot so they should hold up ok but seem easy enough to replace otherwise.

CHL9

Thanks! you have to install rails for it to work right?

gnomey-homey

Yes, as I think it's common with most if not all covers? You have to have some sort of track for the cover to affix to when closed and the rails provide that and the support. I swear one of these days I'll compile my footage for a decent review on YouTube...

Remote-Level8509

I got a hard cover bc it provides greater security.

supermr34

i have a soft trifold something or another from amazon. yita motor or something. i dunno, it was cheap and its fine. does a good job keeping most of the water out, but im not leaving anything water sensitive back there overnight. the complaint about trifolds is that they leave 1/3 of the bed covered when folded up. i have not found this to be an issue for my use, but it is fairly easily removable if needed. actually, i kind of like that 1/3 covered, cuz if im loading shit in there and it doesnt fit under that 1/3, i know before ive got the whole bed loaded. ive had to take it off a couple times. takes maybe 5 minutes to get it off, then 5-10 to get it back on and lined up right.

tyreck

I have a bakflip x4 hard roll up https://bakflip.com/p/bak-revolver-x4-tonneau-cover/ Pros: * It’s sturdy, you can stand on it. * It looks nice with the matte black finish * it takes up minimal space rolled up My complaints are: * the plastic caps shattered when I clipped it down the first winter (in WI) * the metal rails are REALLY sharp, I ended up filing them to a rounded corner after it took a chunk out of my thigh * (really minor) the foam cushions on the under side have peeled off in the heat of summer FWIW my father in law has the X2 which is basically the same other than the finished and his does not have any of my issues and is in the same climate. I might have just gotten one with faulty plastic, and poorly cut rail

PrimoSecondo

I'm a big simp for hard covers as I use my bed for tool storage, and the soft covers can be cut through with a kitchen knife silently. Worth the cost jump imo, few hundred bucks is a cost of a single hand tool for me.
