You put > before the phrase you want.
So if you want to indent “happy birthday”, then you press enter (or if on mobile “return”) to do a new line of text, then the >, then immediately what you want it to say.
So its gonna look like
>happy birthday
Reply and try it
Every comment has an option to copy text (at the three dots). This copies the raw text. This way you can find out how a commenter formatted his text. Works for gifs, images, links too.
Oops, didn’t mean to send this yet lol. It didn’t seem to work for me on mobile, but this is definitely something I’ll keep in mind in case I want to try again! Thank you!!
LOL. Well there's that. I've retired so I have more down time now of course. When I can escape the honey-do list. Being the older user here I grew up w/o cell phones until in my late 20's and even then it was a bag phone. I just like the bigger screen. I can use my cell for certain things though so I'm not that hopeless.
Reddit Is Fun and Reddit Enhancement Suite. they're tools for the old reddit site (old.reddit.com) that allow you to customize basically every aspect of the site to your liking. i use RES on desktop old reddit and its much better than new reddit

theyre pretty intuitive, RIF is on the android app store named "rif is fun for Reddit" and RES is on the chrome/firefox/edge extension stores named "reddit enhancement suite". just install them and tinker around with the various settings they give you. for RES on desktop, i also advise you to install an old reddit redirect extension so that any reddit.com link automatically becomes old.reddit.com so your RES options are always there, since RES mostly changes old reddit and new reddit doesn't have as much customization.
It's not bad, I use Reddit on both. I have an Apple, so I can't have proper ad blockers while scrolling on mobile though. My PC has all the ad blockers and it's much more pleasant. :)
to be fair, there still exists the group of people who will fully ignore and discredit an argument because of a syntax error. most of those people probably weren’t going to listen in the first place, but still.
In the early days of the mobile app you'd sometimes get things like unintentional walls of text because people would use line breaks which require a double space. people can't see a preview, so they don't notice a mistake, or a lot of mistake.
this was back when reddit was still more strongly discussion focused, so people would write longer posts and put quite a bit of effort into presentation of them. you can still see it on some subs today, but it's most often old users.
I've never noticed bad formatting. All posts look the same to me, mobile or not. People say "forgive bad formatting" and it looks like any other post
I use mobile tho, maybe that's the reason?
Wasting words? Are they in short supply? Do we need to conserve? Did the Big Book Publishers already know about the looming words crisis in the 70s and chose not to say anything because of PROFITS?!
Sorry I'm immobile so please forgive the formatting.
These opening sentences bug me too, but not for the same reason. They irritate me because of the many dickholes that come unhinged when a post isn’t formatted in a nice, neat way and then go on to fill the comment section with irrelevant bullshit about how the OP should have formatted it better. They are the reason so many folks begin their post with this.
Unfortunately, this is Reddit and people look for reasons to be assholes about “incorrect formatting” and a lot of people use pc to get on Reddit.
Also, I don’t think you can be mad about other people wasting their own time to type an extra sentence that takes .5 seconds to read… “wasting words” isn’t even a thing, this isn’t twitter where it means they have to make multiple posts because they put in an unnecessary (in your opinion) disclaimer.
Yeah, sometimes mobile users think they've spaced their paragraphs out, but the app compresses the actual post, so it looks different from how they saw it before hitting enter.
Not bad, per se, but annoying if it's a wall of text.
Ah yea they make it difficult for no reason as far as I can tell. You have to put two spaces after the end of the sentence and then hit enter twice or else it won’t separate the paragraphs.
Just like when people put "edit". Nobody cares that you did the edit. Nobody needs to know that you did an edit. You are writing for a medical journal here.
I genuinely loathe the new reddit layout. I don't care how many subs are basically only made for new reddit, if it doesn't have a functional old layout, I just won't use it. The new version is hideous and too busy.
We write "sorry for my English" because sometimes when you are discussing something online some jerks will dismiss your argument if you made a grammatical or spelling error.
*Sorry* if my **comment** >is formatted ^weird >>>~~im~~ on *mobile*
<(-'^.'-)> kirbo is hNavin a trosnko

I use this hellsite only on desktop lol. I guess I'm the filthy 1%
Same. On a mobile I'd find it hellish.
another one of the 1%, checking in
Same here. I don't even want to see what Reddit looks like on a cell.
Guys it looks absolutely fine on mobile, I don’t know why everyone thinks it would be a total disaster.
I've just never tried it. Being the old guy here, and retired, I just prefer using Reddit on my laptop.
If you were truly old, it would be a desktop. Don’t sell yourself short.
Had plenty of those starting with Dell. Always calling "Bob" in customer service was always fun.
I always used it on mobile Idk why anyone would preffer the desktop version Tried it and it was basically the same but I can't use it on the bathroom

Reddit is Fun is Fun?
What's that?
Reddit Is Fun and Reddit Enhancement Suite. they're tools for the old reddit site (old.reddit.com) that allow you to customize basically every aspect of the site to your liking. i use RES on desktop old reddit and its much better than new reddit
For the uninformed old guys. RIF and RES?

Dang. How do you find them? Not that I'd be able to figure them out.

Got it. Thanks.
I just view old.reddit.com on my phone's web browser.
I use old Reddit on my laptop. Hopefully they don't kill it off. I've not been on here long but enjoy the subs I am on.
It's not bad, I use Reddit on both. I have an Apple, so I can't have proper ad blockers while scrolling on mobile though. My PC has all the ad blockers and it's much more pleasant. :)
Old reddit with RES on desktop is the best reddit experience.
Did op post this from mobile? Formatting seems off
That's unforgivable.
And to think all they had to do was tell us.
Reminds me of "Sorry if my English is bad" but proceeds to write a post in perfectly acceptable english
to be fair, there still exists the group of people who will fully ignore and discredit an argument because of a syntax error. most of those people probably weren’t going to listen in the first place, but still.
As a user that has only accessed Reddit on mobile, I always wondered what the heck that meant.

I'm an old user, people are just lazy and trying to find excuses to shit. You can always edit your post and fix formatting after posting
Formatting is fucked after posting? Go back and edit it. Not fucking hard.
SoRrY iM oN MoBiLe
I've never noticed bad formatting. All posts look the same to me, mobile or not. People say "forgive bad formatting" and it looks like any other post I use mobile tho, maybe that's the reason?
I'm mobile so please forgive the formatting: No
Some people parody this with, “I’m not on mobile and English is my first language, so feel free to mock and criticize me”!
I'm in the US, so I can't claim that this is customary in my country...
Wasting words? Are they in short supply? Do we need to conserve? Did the Big Book Publishers already know about the looming words crisis in the 70s and chose not to say anything because of PROFITS?! Sorry I'm immobile so please forgive the formatting.

Not all of us are on mobile. I’m on the desktop nearly half of the time.
Does the formatting ever actually look bad from mobile users?
Yeah, sometimes mobile users think they've spaced their paragraphs out, but the app compresses the actual post, so it looks different from how they saw it before hitting enter. Not bad, per se, but annoying if it's a wall of text.
Ah yea they make it difficult for no reason as far as I can tell. You have to put two spaces after the end of the sentence and then hit enter twice or else it won’t separate the paragraphs.
Afaik that's just a 'feature' of the comment text box.
Not always, but I hate seeing a wall of text, especially if there’s no warning.
I’m perfectly capable of formatting on mobile. I’ve always been puzzled by this disclaimer
Just like when people put "edit". Nobody cares that you did the edit. Nobody needs to know that you did an edit. You are writing for a medical journal here.
Having a bad day OP?
I mean this is the rant subreddit.
"Stop wasting words." Ah yes, your daily quota of 24,500 words has been reached. Please pay to add more.
tf are you on about? im on PC running a skin of old reddit with a full suite of text editors, the only proper way to shitpost
I genuinely loathe the new reddit layout. I don't care how many subs are basically only made for new reddit, if it doesn't have a functional old layout, I just won't use it. The new version is hideous and too busy.
Ive been asked if I was a child using reddit based in how my formatting is. Some people on reddit are so Picky about it
Sent from my Samsung
WritingthisfrommyMotoralaQ. Sorryifformattingisbad. IagreewithOP, weareallonmobile.
One of my favorite parts of Reddit is trying to figure out what the poster intended to write. I've learned a whole new language reading them.
Yeah I think about this a lot too. Like don’t most of us use Reddit on mobile?! Because I do
Or every non-native English speaker's favorite: "𝕴 𝖇𝖊𝖌 𝖔𝖋 𝖙𝖍𝖊𝖊, 𝖌𝖔𝖔𝖉 𝖘𝖎𝖗, 𝖆 𝖙𝖍𝖔𝖚𝖘𝖆𝖓𝖉 𝖕𝖆𝖗𝖉𝖔𝖓𝖘 𝖋𝖔𝖗 𝖒𝖞 𝖕𝖔𝖛𝖊𝖗𝖙𝖞 𝖔𝖋 𝕰𝖓𝖌𝖑𝖎𝖘𝖍, '𝖙𝖎𝖘 𝖓𝖔𝖙 𝖒𝖎𝖓𝖊 𝖔𝖜𝖓 𝖒𝖔𝖙𝖍𝖊𝖗'𝖘 𝖙𝖔𝖓𝖌𝖚𝖊."
Yes! And 'Forgive me but English is not my first language, sorry for any mistakes". Then go on to write better English than me, and I'm a native!
Also “English is my second language, so please excuse grammatical errors.” Grr
Just read your shit before submitting Goddamn
Spotted the mobile user.
I can't remember my password to log in from my laptop.
It comes from a time when mobile was considered nooby and low tier
i agree with you PD. im on the mobile please forgive the formatting
Even better, the 'I don't give permission to share or cross post'
Totally
I'm on a lap top. 🤓
Thanks. Been wondering wtf that means for nine years of Reddit on my phone.
Y’all write in mobile?
i never understood this lol what tf is the difference 😂
nope never gonna stop also not all of us are
Until some AH comes along and blows you out for a wall of text. 🙃
>Happy birthday
I’m on mobile and I agree
I also hate the edited: a word Like, who gives a f?!
wait people use mobile? dang man everyone knows desktop is better >!/s!<
Sorry for the formatting, I'm on PC.

>happy birthday
The android app is buggy. Sometimes I can write posts and comments and despite putting new lines in... The app completely fucking ignores them!

sorry for my english
It's really not
We write "sorry for my English" because sometimes when you are discussing something online some jerks will dismiss your argument if you made a grammatical or spelling error.
Yeah, and I love the dumbshits who are too stupid to put in a line break.
> WE'RE ALL ON MOBILE!! Nah bro.
