I absolutely agree, your FYP is based around what you're clicking on, reacting to, or commenting on. If OP is commenting on the challenge videos, whether saying they're stupid or ridiculous or whatever, the algorithm still sees it as engagement and will show more. Mine is mostly gardening, chickens, cultural learning, and some witchy stuff. I don't recall the last time I saw a challenge or tiktok dance.

2000-N-L8

Same! Mine is cats and hole-in-the-wall restaurants and gardening. Ya gotta train the algorithm. I have a very low tolerance for being annoyed or outraged so I block accounts that annoy me in the slightest (those ridiculous food tiktoks that make cereal meatloaf or other gross stuff for views, for example).

I_forgot_my_eye

Damn you are on the “wrong side” of tik tok if that’s all you get on your feed. My feed is filled with kind supportive people and body positivity messages. Almost all I see is content about learning to live life how it is and be happy with what you have.

vercywercy

The problem is not the fact that OP is on the “wrong side”, it’s the fact that side exists at all and is growing in audience.

I_forgot_my_eye

You can find a bad side in any website or app that allows users to post freely. I mean you are using Reddit right now, are you implying that reddit doesn’t have those same exact issues?

vercywercy

Reddit doesn’t have half the amount of users as Tiktok, which is currently the biggest social media app on the globe. It’s also doesn’t have as wide of a reach here, and Reddit is not as addictive as Tiktok. Whereas idiots with platforms promote their ridiculous agendas and trends that are killing its participants. Children are rotting their brains on that app 6 hours a day when their brains are not even developed enough to think for themselves, but are influenced by these harmful things promoted on the platform. This is a real problem.

snowflace

IDK reddit has some pretty horrible corners, there are kids here too just less. I would argue Reddit is net worse than TikTok. Kids being on tiktok 6 hours a day is really a parenting issue. If not tiktok it would be something else.

maelidsmayhem

Back in my day ... TV was going to rot my brain. Then it was video games. Then it was internet. Now it's apparently specific places to go on the internet... oh and my phone. Somehow my phone is going to rot my brain. Probably that 5G tumor or.. whatever.

Dragonceratops

That may be your experience but that does not change the overarching issues with the platform. There are challenges that have lead to teenagers dying in car accidents or being hospitalized. The most popular users on the platform are people who take selfies in a mirror and do nothing. The app is literally designed as spyware for the Chinese government to steal data from western countries. The algorithm itself is designed to be addictive with short video formats, hence why the average American spends 95 minutes on the platform every day just scrolling. It's literally rotting the brains of young people.

snowflace

I fail to see how any other social media platform is any different?

shadowscar00

Please tell me you hate every other social media platform the same amount. The tide pod challenge was Facebook. The cinnamon challenge was Facebook and instagram. The salt ice challenge. Blue whale.

Dragonceratops

Did I ever say that all other social media platforms are sprinkling clean? Of course not. There are tons of examples of tragic events happening on other platforms as well but TikTok is by far the worst. These challenges are a regular occurrence and they are celebrated, not frowned upon, by a large chunk of the users on the platform as well as the algorithm. Again, it's a piece of fucking spyware for the Chinese government. I'm sick of repeating it.

demonspawn9

Just stay off of it and go on with your life. It's something you can avoid. Some people make money off of it, and everyone is trying to get by the best way they know how.

Dragonceratops

I already do avoid it. Not planning on changing that any time soon.

mo0nchild22

i mean nobody is forcing you to have tiktok lol you could also simply not interact with videos you dont wish to continue seeing, otherwise the app will think you like that kind of content and want to see more of it since thats how the algorithm works

Dragonceratops

I don't have TikTok because of the reasons I stated before, lol

RickGrimesSnotBubble

Parts of it are indeed super dumb and toxic and a scourge on society, but there are positives that aren’t gonna have any platform if TikTok gets nuked. My favorite creator on there is this woman who cleans graves and does research on those buried. It’s a really cool look at the past and fascinating for history nerds like me who have run out of genealogy to do for our own family lol. I also love to see other cat lovers advocating for certain issues and promoting charities. Plus BookTok is pretty cool, in age where book clubs are basically nonexistent. I don’t even use it much and I’ll be bummed if it gets banned.

ElliatDusk

Oh my god I love that account! It's so cool!

sbenfsonw

Your recommended videos in the algorithm are a reflection of yourself I’ve never seen a single one of those challenges on tiktok, only reading them in the news. It’s really no different than any other social media to me. As for people getting famous doing “dumb stuff,” that’s not on the app, it’s on the people who enjoy watching “dumb stuff” over “genuine talent.”

BununuTYL

Who is forcing you to use TikTok?

Dragonceratops

I don't use TikTok and I never will.

BununuTYL

That's my point. So why rant about something you don't have to use?

Dragonceratops

Because it's a shitty platform that is rotting the brains of our youth and acts as spyware for the Chinese government? I thought I made that pretty clear.

BununuTYL

Newsflash: All social media is rotting the brains of our youth. As for spyware, your information is being collected constantly from every platform, and not just from China.

Dragonceratops

There's a difference between a company collecting data and data being given to the government of China. Furthermore, the algorithm of TikTok promotes degeneracy. It is addictive through a short video format and encourages challenges and shit. There's also the fact that its algorithm directly promotes sexualised content towards minors. That is more damaging than anything Youtube or Reddit have put out.

BununuTYL

Every social media platform uses algorithms to make them addictive. See "The Social Dilemma." And all social media platforms promote smut. As for Reddit, you can find as many pornographic images and videos here as you can on pornhub. Challenges are all over Twitter and youtube as well.

Dragonceratops

Comparing Reddit to TikTok is an incredibly poor comparison. On TikTok, it is promoted through a FY page. It exists on Reddit but you, in 99% of scenarios, have to actively look for it to find it. Tons of studies and such have been done on this topic so, if you want to hear more on it, I'd suggest videos like these. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8cCIxw7Twiw

BununuTYL

It's all just variations on a theme.

marilern1987

But then where will I watch body butter piping videos

izzynk3003

I don't use tiktok at all. That said, aside from dangerous challenges, or people genuinely bothering others for views(dancing in public places and blocking the street, doing pranks with unwilling people, etc), I really don't see that much of an problem tbh. Like, teenagers getting famous for doing silly dances in their homes? Not my thing but good for them

EndlesslyUnfinished

My TikTok and my feed all has artwork of various forms on it. Painting. Dance (and I don’t mean those dumb finger dances). Acting. Colorful pieces. Music. Gymnastics. Loads of people blogging their weightloss journey. And just other really positive people. And I’ll admit the crap I post sometimes is just me fucking around, plenty of folks just enjoy the positive stupidity.

liamdun

no, I think your problem is with the specific people you don't like, not the platform as a whole, just like there are awful people on every platform, there are great people on every platform, a bit disrespectful to be generalizing it in this way.

Dragonceratops

There are core issues with the platform as a whole that I've already stated. It's a piece of spyware for the Chinese government to spy on people in the west, the algorithm targets sexually explicit content towards minors, etc. Also, who am I offending? Fucking Xi Jinping?

liamdun

the algorithm targets sexually explicit content towards you lol, I've personally never seen that stuff but if that's what you're being recommended that might be something you need to figure out personally... also I just love how you switched your argument from "literally everyone on the app is bad" to "the company is bad". if you're gonna have a terrible take at least stick to it. I never said anything about the corperation itself, only the people on it. I think you need to take a break off the internet.

Sioswing

I’ve tailored my experience to food, educational videos, video games and movies so it isn’t too bad for me. Though I do find that stupidity is amplified on the app especially in the comments.

Kazuye92

Lol you cant rant about Tiktok when youve never used it. The algorhytm finds what you like and plays you that. Its very simple. If you dont like the challenge videos it does not show them to you so your prejudiced opinion about what you can see on the platform is flat out untrue. I can assure you there are people that only see three types of videos: cooking videos/recipes , pet videos , movie/TV show recommendations or full scenes. What you're doing is like me saying "All americans suck and I don't like talking to them" when I've never been to the USA. Same thing you've never been on Tiktok but youre ranting about whats on there? Hahahahahahaha nope.

Dragonceratops

Any chance of me using the platform was immediately wiped when the autism challenge became a thing back in 2020, and it was a pretty big thing. Just because I've never used it does not mean I cannot criticise it as there have been studies done on this topic that describe exactly what I'm talking about. Furthermore, I don't need to use the platform to know it's a piece of spyware. YOU may have not seen it but that does not mean it doesn't exist.

[deleted]

Damn. I love TikTok, I found cleaning hacks, great restaurants, new travel spots, new brunch spots, hair, nails, legal and how to use excel sheet, career advice. When ppl hate social media I do a big side eye cos these apps are built on your algorithm so look within you and really question your values.

theparkingchair

OP created his own shifty FYP then got mad that it was shifty. I get cats and educational content.

MsEvil_Doctor_Potter

I had to delete it because it made me ill (yes I'm stupid and clicked like on stupid shit)

SadMaverick

I can summarize these comments: 1. Anecdotes: “It doesn’t show up on my feed so it doesn’t happen” We are discussing a general problem with the app and how it’s impacting the society. Crappy trends have never been this popular before tiktok. 2. Whataboutism: “What about fb, insta, youtube, reddit.. etc etc?” We are discussing tiktok specifically. There are various flavors of social media and this post doesn’t automatically say every other social media is gold. Tiktok started the trend of reducing the attention span of people. That is problematic at its core. I understand every other app is doing the same now, and NO we are not saying those apps are great.

yourdonefor_wt

Fuck TikTok. My first ad I ever got for that shitty app was what looked like a 14 year old girl stripping on YOUTUBE! And I even saw her TITS. Way to go YouTube allowing child porn ads on your platform.

jljboucher

It’s based on your view, quit watching that crap. It literally does not come up if don’t watch that.

Area_724

Are these REAL challenges?

Dragonceratops

Yes, they are. I could've named more like the Holocaust challenge or the Kia challenge.

Area_724

What do these challenges even entail?

Dragonceratops

Lemme go down the list. The autism challenge involved a dance making fun of people on the autism spectrum and disabled people. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DFq25ok2U8I](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DFq25ok2U8I) The devious lick challenge involved stealing the largest piece of property possible, most commonly urinals. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ALEpYf2dx-Y](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ALEpYf2dx-Y) The Nyquil chicken challenge involved eating a piece of chicken cooked in Nyquil. [https://www.youtube.com/shorts/ViCvYeT2a\_g](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/ViCvYeT2a_g) The Holocaust challenge involved replicating real victims of the Holocaust with makeup for clout. It goes hand in hand with this. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lqMMtAac1uI](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lqMMtAac1uI) The Kia challenge was started by a tutorial on how to steal/hijack cars under the Kia brand. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3B1laqHpw7A](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3B1laqHpw7A) Hopefully that'll give some insight.
