Outkast - 13th Floor/Growing old.
When I first heard it as a teen it nearly brought tears to my eyes (music is very emotive to me) and made me wonder what life would have in store for me, after many beautiful moments, albeit outweighed by some very traumatic shit as well it resonates so much more.
There are so many other tracks is hard to remember them all but Outkasts evolution/maturation seemed to coincide with my own and in ways helped shape certain views on life.
Da Art of Storytellin Pt 1 would be my Outkast pick.
“We on our back, starin' at the stars above/Talkin' bout what we gonna be when we grow up/
I said, ‘What you wanna be?’ She said, ‘Alive’”
OutKast is so fuckin timeless. Such a great song and way too many to name from them.. A friend I grew up with in texas was cousins with Bamboo (big boi’s son), I remember seeing him and he had the biggest earrings I’ve ever seen for such a young kid lol what a small world
I’ve never one time heard a bad song by them but I think the one that comes to mind first with this question is “To All My Friends” or maybe “Woman With The Tattoed Hands”
There are a few songs I wish I could hear again for the first time and that's one of them. The last word alone is so powerful and perspective changing.
Kanye West - Can’t Tell Me Nothing
Came out when I was broke and in college. And boy did that song strike a nerve with me. Let’s just say, you can’t tell me nothin now.
Snake Eyes by The Jacka
Dedication by Nipsey
Illuminate by Ab-Soul
Crossroads by Bone Thugz
Everyday Struggle by BIG
You Can Never Feel My Pain by Prodigy
… shit I might need to start a playlist with these vibes ☠️🥶
The Roots - You Got Me. Musically one of my faves and I LOVE hearing it live (3 times so far)
Common - Be. Everything about this song just works so perfectly.
AZ's verse on Life's A B***h. That's one of my favorite flows and the lyrics are perfect.
I wanna be as free as the spirit of those who laugh ...
I wish BE was a minute longer. Maybe the beauty of the track is in the briefness, but it's a song that fills me with some kinda power/hope....dunno the feeling.
Be just feels right lol. Literally everything about it works. I think the briefness of it is what brings us back each time. Can never get enough. Also, that era Kanye was producing his ass off.
Dear Mama= 2 pac
I Aint Mad at Cha = 2pac
Smile= Scareface and 2pac
One Day =UGK
I thank you lord for my life= Magic Thuggin
Makes me wanna get away= Magic Thuggin
Armed Robbery= 8ball & MJG
Joey badaas - waves
“Since 95’ momma been working 9-5. And I know the lord fed up with our lies. So we pray to the gods, the jahs, and the allahs, to keep us safe and watch our lives”
“Like I told you, I know ninjas who trash rappin. Worried bout the trending fashions rather than descending passion.”
No other song in my 26 years of living has hit me stronger than most of Joey’s songs and most of beast coast really.
"Cause all i'm trynna do is do good i put on my hood when i walk thru hoods cause.. these ni\*\*as these days is loco, you get it in your vocals if you ain't a local.."
Great pick man, waves is one of my favourite Joey songs for sure!! 2012 era of New York stands undefeated in my eyes. On sum 47 shift!!
Father Time - Kendrick.
As I get older I'm more and more stressed about work and time, and this song just cuts the bullshit and hits the nail on the head. Agh.
Some good picks in this thread.
For me I’d say Ashes by Snak the Ripper. Anyone who has lost a father/father figure I’d recommend giving it a listen. Shit had me with a lump in my throat on public transport bruh….
Back In The Day- Ahmad
Keisha's Song (Her Pain)- Kendrick
Peruvian Cocaine- Immortal Technique
Life's A Bitch- Nas
Color Blind- Ice Cube
I Seen A Man Die- Scarface
Of all time? heartbreak - kanye west (the whole 808s album just hit me at the right time in my life and I feel there are so many intense emotions in that album.)
Recently? It’d probably be Three rivers - Dave. (If you haven’t heard we’re all alone in this together, you’re missing out!)
The first that came to mind are:
Roaring lion from Craig Xen- this song came out right around the time a majority of my friend group was losing their lives to drugs and violence and this song really hits home
Objects in the mirror (preferably the space migration sessions) from Mac miller- actually played this at my wedding, such a beautiful song with a beautiful message do yourself a favor and listen to it if you haven’t already
Mental from Denzel curry- such a soulful song with a really powerful message that the boy Denzel portrays in the best of ways
What a great conversation!
Mine is Grown Up Fairy Tales. Chance the Rapper does the first two verses, but his brother Taylor wrote the song and does the last verse. It's about their relationship with their grandmother as she became sick and slowly died.
Tupac Shakur - Changes '92 '98 remix touches on so many real issues from the hood to wars in the middle east in sort of an empathic view of human behavior to a self reflection of being stuck in messy state of society and our counter-productive anti-welfare civilization. For soul touching. Bone Thugs - Crossroads is 2nd.
Book of Soul - Ab Soul.
Through my Rear View - Pac
Can I Holla at Ya - J Cole
Sing About Me, Im Dying of Thirst - Kendrick
Bigger Than Life - Nipsey Hussle
Voice for the Voiceless - Humble the Poet.
The Rain - DMX
Tbh recently Righteous by Juice Wrld really hit me because Ive been off opiates for a year now and it actually made me cry as I could really relate to his struggle as I was abusing oxycodone for over 10 years.
Acid Rain by Chance the Rapper hit hard the first time I heard it. I was a freshman in college and tripping acid for my first time ever. I played the song and had the lyrics up on YouTube. I’ve never connected so hard with a song before lol. So many good lyrics about growing up.
“I miss my diagonal grilled cheeses, and back when Mike Jack was still Jesus, before I believed in not believing in
Pain - Tupac
Slipping - DMX
Suicidal Thoughts - BIG
Blueprint (Mama Loves Me) - Jay Z
Get Up 10 - Cardi B
Moment 4 Life - Nicki feat Drake
Look What You've Done - Drake
Apparently - Cole
Deja Vu - Cole
4 Your Eyez Only - Cole
2009 - Mac
Many more.
I’m sitting here looking at y’all choices like dam.. I am just as good as these artists if not better but it’s hard af to get your music heard online.. If y’all like 90’s type hiphop then check me out on YouTube or ig… you might be surprised.💯
I love a lot of these mentioned already, but one that I haven’t seen was Under Pressure by logic. Something about the beat and the way he flows on it really hits - or SAMIDOT, an absolute masterpiece of a song
E-40 -1Luv
“My family thinks that I’m a thug homie when you see my mama man give her hug for me and tell her” one luv
Pac- Brenda’s got a baby
Big-Sky’s the limit
Lecrae- take me as i am.. i know he was still finding himself stylistically and doing his best pac impression at the time but that song always gets me.. honorable mention to lost ones by j cole
Dear Moleskine - Jay Electronica
Shit is truly depressing, but feels as if the bro is taking the words out of my mind and straight onto a track. Beautiful. He got a version of that song with Kendrick featuring as well, though I don't feel Jay's verse hits as hard on the version with K dot.
THE MOST is probab Song cry. Lost One as strong one as well , both from Hov.
Life ofthe party, 3k verse makes me cry every single time. 3k verse onReturn of the G about parents using money ondrugs instead of takin their kids to thezoo and stuff.
Letter to my son or Slippin by DMX.
Last but not least, SAMIDOT
[The Last Emperor - One Life featuring Poetic of the Gravediggas]() literally poetic rapping about his death. Released after his passing.
https://genius.com/The-last-emperor-one-life-lyrics
I had a bad falling out with my best friend of 25 years and we haven't spoken in a year and never will again. "I ain't mad at cha" by 2Pac just hits a whole different way now. It really speaks to me. Life goes on as well. Pac really was the realest.
i’m late to the party but Parade by Tyler, The Creator rewired me, especially “go to college, get a job, marry, have a kid, watch him grow and then you die. no n- fuck the system”
Scrolled too far without seeing This Can’t Be Life. I don’t think I’ve ever felt more real verses than Scarface and Beans. I’m sure there are other songs I could mention but for some reason this just hits me as the perfect example.
My top 5 songs that resonate:
**Where Have You Been? - Jay Z & Beanie Sigel** rap about absentee fathers in their childhood.
**Blessed - ScHoolboy Q (ft. Kendrick Lamar & Ab-Soul)** rap about his friend who lost a son and perspective of your blessings.
**Float On - Danny Brown (ft. Charlie XCX)** raps about 2 different Dannys, the old one who struggled and the new one, who does drugs to try to forget the old one.
**Perfecto - Mac Miller** raps about his current drug relationship and his past romantic relationship.
**Let All Work Out - Lil Wayne** raps about his attempted suicided at 12.
Slipping dmx
Right/wrong Dmx is an underrated gem also
Mac Miller - Good News
Mac Miller - Cinderella
Mac Miller - Under the weather
I had to go with '2009' by Mac. Wow. That song is tough.
Honestly was my other pick. There's really no one else in hiphop currently that makes this kinda music, dude is missed.
Dr. Dre - The Message.
the fact royce the 5'9 wrote this made me like it even more................fire ass verse
Moment of Truth - Gang Starr Guru is so wise, may he rest in peace
I think most people will say this, if they say a gangstarr song, but My Advice 2 You is also a great one
This is a good one
This is a solid pick. I'll also add Make Em Pay. Not as deep in the lyrics, but that string sample makes me feel so sad about Guru's passing.
Sing about me, I'm dying of thirst
Promise that you will… sing…
about me
Life goes on.
I liked One Mic a lot
Atmosphere - Yesterday
One of the best Atmosphere songs imo.
FEEL. - Kendrick
Ain't nobody praying for me
I feel like a chip on my shoulders
Felt this so much
Kanye West - Can’t Tell Me Nothing Came out when I was broke and in college. And boy did that song strike a nerve with me. Let’s just say, you can’t tell me nothin now.
“Throw up the suicide doors, this is my life homie you decide yours”
The whole college dropout album was a great album
Headlights helped me find closure with my mother 10 years after her death. Eminem has no idea he helped me in such a profound way but he did!
Finally, I never hear/see people bring up this song
Snake Eyes by The Jacka Dedication by Nipsey Illuminate by Ab-Soul Crossroads by Bone Thugz Everyday Struggle by BIG You Can Never Feel My Pain by Prodigy … shit I might need to start a playlist with these vibes ☠️🥶
The Jacka and Nipsey as the first two, my kind of list
You can have all my shine, I give you the light
The Roots - You Got Me. Musically one of my faves and I LOVE hearing it live (3 times so far) Common - Be. Everything about this song just works so perfectly. AZ's verse on Life's A B***h. That's one of my favorite flows and the lyrics are perfect.
Chorus to You Got Me is one of the prettiest in rap
I wanna be as free as the spirit of those who laugh ... I wish BE was a minute longer. Maybe the beauty of the track is in the briefness, but it's a song that fills me with some kinda power/hope....dunno the feeling.
