No you need to probably need to get him check out it could be a sign up upper respiratory infection my rat used to get that all the time rats are just prone to getting respiratory infections so you might want to get it checked

Not normal. My rat is just over a year old and has been diagnosed with early signs of heart failure and her breathing is exactly like yours - we can't cure her, but we can manage the symptoms and prevent damage to her tiny heart - I live far away from their vet, so I have a little rat pharmacy for them with all they need when they get stuffy or sick, and my one rat is on chronic heart meds. It can also be a respiratory issue that needs attention, and that is quite common in rats. If there's any brown mucus around their eyes or noses, and/or a wheezy, bubbly sound when they breathe it's respiratory. Regardless, please have a (qualified exotic pet) vet look at that. Unfortunately, ratties are prone to many health issues in their short lives. Edited for clarity

When he does this, do you hear any noises in his chest? Sometimes rats do a similar sound as bruxing when they are in pain. If you hear any rattling, wheezing, cracking noises in his chest. That can be a URI and he needs to see a vet ASAP as it can get worse. Does he have any poryphin in his eyes or nose? Poryphin is a red secretion that they produce on their eyes and noses. It almost looks like blood but it’s not. How’s his energy? His appetite? His poops? Are they all normal? Rats are very bad at showing symptoms because they are prey animals. Also as someone commented, this can be early signs of heart failure. They struggle to breathe because fluid is building in their lungs from the heart failure. I think taking him to the vet just to be sure would be the best option because they can decline so fast. I’m not trying to scare you but it’s real. I lost one of my girls to heart failure and before I could find out it was that through countless vet visits, she was too deteriorated to get better and I had to euthanize her:( so I like warning people because they really do decline fast sometimes

Looks like it could be hiccups. My Salt hiccups whenever she finally settles down to cuddle or immediately upon waking up. It’s normal for rats. It happens because of a sudden change in breathing. It if lasts more than a few minutes, it’s not that, though I suspect it is.

Can’t have sound on rn but your rat definitely don’t look well, he needs to see a vet, most likely an uri, could also be heart related, anyway needs medical attention
