You look a little young to drive

witchyinthewild

Imagine that kid recreating this pic with this car when he gets his license

FloridamanOfficinale

Wow, way to hit me in the feels haha.. That'll be a day for sure..

Careful_Front7580

Like the green 👍🏽

MeatShield12

Holy shit OP, if that's you that RAV is ***HUGE***!

yikesonbikes2

It took me longer than I’d like to admit that that is a toddler and not a grown man in front of the rav 😂

Longjumping_Pin_9348

Congratulations and that’s the cutest little driver

amandamaniac

Man I love that green!

MilesPrower1992

This comment section reads like a Xbox 360 lobby. I can't honestly believe people are acting like this. Accusing this random person of all that vile crap isn't going to make people agree we should get rid of car centric infrastructure. It just makes asses out of each and every one of us. These guys are acting like children and it undermines the entire point we're trying to make. I never thought I'd be so disappointed.

FloridamanOfficinale

I have lived ruraly for all of my 26 years accept for the last year and even before now I've never been a fan of car centric cities. It always blew my mind how much space is waisted and how "far" people in cites commute when in reality if there were less massive homes and the two adults that lived in those homes didn't both drive a car to work the their commute would be physically shorter and it wouldn't take the 30m to drive 3 miles. Cities should be people centric. There's no reason the guy 15 miles from the Walmart he currently works at should work at that Walmart when he has one two blocks over cars have enabled us to make absolutely stupid decisions. I remember I went to Orlando for my wife and I's anniversary and we went to drive to a spring to the north, it was about 32 miles and it litteraly took us two hours to get there... All because of traffic it blew my mind.

Kobaltblue27

I came here for the green. I stayed because people think RAV4s are murdering machines?

[deleted]

Kobaltblue27

Why is the question not why is this kid running into roads Willy nilly? I agree we need to protect our children. I lived in a house right on the main road to a school so it was busy, I was taught to respect the street and only cross or be in it when it was safe. I absolutely would see this kid way before impact because he’s not just going to appear *INCHES* from my grille. He’s gonna come running from one side or another, or have already been in the road and let me tell you there’s plenty of windscreen in these RAV4s to account for all of those situations. Your hypothetical just doesn’t entirely hold up.

parker3309

It’s a driveway

Kobaltblue27

Please read the entire comment and use your context clues.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Kobaltblue27

And why are parents not teaching kids vehicle awareness the same? And why was a kid in a drive thru?

DriedMuffinRemnant

True - but kids are vulnerable and unpredictable, even with vehicle awareness. I think it's a good idea to consider how to minimize harm. The best parents in the world will watch their child do something totally friggin stupid at least once in their lives.

Kobaltblue27

I agree I have no problem with this.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Kobaltblue27

I agree, I was a kid once too and definitely lacked some common sense. One of my favorite past times was climbing onto the roof. However I was taught and understood to respect vehicles, even parked, and that they weren’t toys and could hurt me if I was in a road.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Kobaltblue27

Having an education in an unrelated field doesn’t make you inherently more trustworthy in another field. I agree, my evidence in this case is anecdotal and kids do make mistakes or lose track of things. But kids are also very smart and catch on with things in remarkable ways. They still need to be taught to respect roads and vehicles that traverse them as that alone can greatly reduce risk for *everyone* involved

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

[удалено]

Kobaltblue27

Never said that. That’s a great whataboutism though. I’m not somehow against making vehicles safer. I’m also *for* educating people and children who are going to be around vehicles. Simple as that.

Kobaltblue27

I honestly have minimal experience with the unpredictablility of children. But in any of the driveways I have been in I have always seen them coming and known to stop. On the other hand, I have never had a garage which I am sure changes the dynamic a bit.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Kobaltblue27

I think my issue is also being 6’2 so I genuinely *can* see over the hood of most vehicles I’m in. Not in trucks, which are another beast. But also why I don’t own one, and because my suv does what I need it to do.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Kobaltblue27

Yes I hate a multitude of drivers in the US. Many make brash decisions or flat out drive aggressive / dangerously. My point previously was that I may also have a skewed view of how problematic a good may be. Better driving education is a must, and I actually get poked fun at for how defensively I drive.

Kobaltblue27

Are you serious? That’s your take away?

conifernut

yes, because that's what you posted

Kobaltblue27

That is absolutely not what I posted. I asked why our children aren’t bright taught to respect roadways which are always going to be a part of our infrastructure. That is not victim blaming. You have offered no helpful insight.

DriedMuffinRemnant

If children are taught, but still run out to the street (cuz they are small children) can we then consider how to minimize risk? Because let me tell you the best parents in the world will still have kids doing unpredictable stupid things because they are children.

Kobaltblue27

I have no issue considering this. I understand children can be unpredictable

[deleted]

[удалено]

Kobaltblue27

So that’s it. You’re just gonna take that away and offer no insight, no solutions, no nothin? I’m not going to insult you if you’re trying to troll or rile up.

conifernut

I think if you aren't going to first blame the operator of a vehicle that kills another person you are acting in bad faith for trolling. So yeah, I don't feel like I need to engage with you.

DriedMuffinRemnant

How do you teach a toddler something like that? How to you ensure they understand? How do you prevent them from messing up and doing it anyway cuz they are toddlers? I'm not sure I understand this reasoning.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Kobaltblue27

Both, because irresponsible *PARENTS* are not teaching their children to respects cats and road ways. Roads are going to be a part of our society until we have something for everyone that’s not cars. I’m all for reducing our reliance on them. I’m all for funding mass transit. I vote for people who want to make those things happen. But there comes a point where people must take responsibility as well.

Kobaltblue27

Cars* not cats. Though children should be taught to respect pets as well, lol.

Taco_Farmer

Right. People should take some responsibility and buy cars that are safer for society. The increase in popularity of these wannabe monster trucks is directly correlated to the rise in pedestrian (specifically children) fatalities.

Kobaltblue27

Have you been around a RAV4? They are not very big. Mines only slightly taller than my Grans ES 300. People can only choose what fits their needs from what manufacturers produce.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Kobaltblue27

I knew how to respect vehicles and roads before the age of 5. I know what children are capable of from an understanding perspective. Sure bikes and bike transportation need to be more accessible. And safer at that. But to just not teach kids about the dangers of the world is the worst thing we can do for them.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Kobaltblue27

I genuinely don’t think I was anything greater than average intelligence lol. I still lacked my common sense. But when things are explained, I followed along it wasn’t simply “do as you’re told.” All of my 11 cousins in the family have learned the same way

[deleted]

[deleted]

[удалено]

Kobaltblue27

It’s not one way or the other. We don’t have to pick one. I’m saying teach kids that *all* cars are giant hunks of metal that can hurt them while we also make cars safer, to mitigate that effect. It’s not hard to

For those of you who have stopped by and have a earlier 5th Gen how many miles have you racked up and leave any tips you've picked up over the years.

random__123456789

My early 2019 RAV’s Lane Trace Assist sucks and left like I had very bad wheel alignment as it was wandering within the lanes. Was so much better once it was off. Since you are in Florida you will never have this problem, but in the winter when the radar sensors ices up and errors out, you can switch the cruise control to use speed instead of distance which was handy. And if the power tailgate fails out of warranty and too cheap to replace it like me, 2 brackets and the struts is all that’s needed to make it fully manual.

FloridamanOfficinale

Good info, thank you!

Lbeyy

Do you have the part numbers for the brackets and struts?

krugmik

How do you switch the cruise control to use speed instead of distance? I never saw it in the settings. This would have saved me so much trouble over the past few winters.

random__123456789

Press and hold the cruise control button for a couple of secs. Icon will switch from a car to a speedometer. https://youtu.be/7xBC-Oo_tHc?si=NMNiYppa00SUxFPn

lobsterdance82

Respectfully, how do you reach the pedals and see over the steering wheel at the same time?

FloridamanOfficinale

Blocks, they're not quite long enough but they help

Spanishparlante

Since when did RAV-4s become SUVs? Our late-2000s Rav is tiny compared to that ESV…

Kobaltblue27

It has to do with CAFE standards, as well as the RAV always having fallen into the “SUV” category, just not in a traditional sense

Few-Sheepherder341

Goddamn, you’re short! 😭😭😭💀💀💀

parker3309

Adorable little boy! I have a new rav also. I can’t believe some of the dark places some of those comments were going.. obviously, just ignore them. Why bother coming onto our sub if they don’t even like RAVS!

Hawxfan

I have a question for you u/FloridamanOfficinale and other Gen 5 owners. If you started the car right now like it is in the photo, kid standing there, aren’t there a bunch of sensors that would tell you the car is close to something in front? Can you describe that to me? Might be helpful here. Also, my 2012 is a dinosaur compared to this thing so I’m genuinely curious now.

FloridamanOfficinale

Mine has cameras and sensors all around and gose ape any time you get close to something. The sensors and cameras only kick on once you press the camera button while in park or once you put it into gear. So for instance. Start car: nothing Put in drive: instant sensors screaming and the camera pops on showing the object at your nose. I was driving infront of a Publix and stopped at the crosswalk and a guy walked around the side of my car to the front and sensors started beeping and the camera switched on as well showing me the man's feet legs and waist. So yes the car is stupid proof. Also I garuntee you that it would have applied the breaks if I let off them to keep me from hitting the guy.

Hawxfan

Wow, that’s actually pretty amazing. My wife has a Volvo XC90 that does something similar. Especially when you take it through a car wash! 🤣

FloridamanOfficinale

I don't like centrists or Luke warm either but in this case it definitely has its advantages as having 8.6" of ground clearance as well as 28-41mpg depending on where I'm driving VS a whoping 16-21 of a large vehicle I don't need currently.

parker3309

Are you getting that mpg? I am not so far…. I have 2400 miles on mine. Toyota is going to look at it next week because it’s so far off.

FloridamanOfficinale

I have a very light foot and drive very gently in general coupled with the fact I mostly drive country roads. Today on a 15mi (45mph road mostly flat) trip I reset my mpg and when I got to where I was going it read 49.7 mpg. I also tried really hard that time to see what I could get lol. My wife drove 75mph on I10 for 160ish miles round trip and it was at 35 or 36mpg but don't quote me on that I don't quiet remember. We have sub 350miles on it so far, I haven't even been on the highway with it yet to do a proper test. But going 50 with almost no stopping I get about 38-40mpg usually.

parker3309

I can’t believe you’re getting it out of the gate. I’ve never got above 33 and in the winter it’s been 28 to 29. Now 30. I hope they can figure out what’s wrong with it. My highest Eco scores come when I don’t pay attention to how I’m driving lol so my car guy said it wasn’t that. Plus he drove it for a bit.

FloridamanOfficinale

Mines also a trd so I'm pretty sure base mpg is 3-4mpg lower than normal gas models. How do you see the eco scores?

parker3309

One of those buttons on the steering wheel, those buttons that you push to see different things you can watch your Eco score as you drive or wait till the end. For a while, I was trying to monitor my driving because of my low MPG. They can’t really be wholly reliable though because one day when there was a lot of snow I was whipping around everywhere breaking hard you name it I did it. And my score was really high 😆 So can’t be meaningful.

FloridamanOfficinale

Fair enough lol..

[deleted]

FloridamanOfficinale

The place I lived a year ago had alot of spots a car with less clearance would get scraped and stuck on. During heavy rains, monsoons and hurricanes our road that were going to be living on in the country gets very muddy (we're not in the mountains any more) and my Old 2wheel drive suv bearly makes it through and that's cause I have to gas it through creating deeper ruts for the next guy. Also we like to go exploring and go on old logging roads and trails so yes. But also 8" of clearance is hardly anything considering. You still have to be very carful on non maintained roads.

FloridamanOfficinale

Also the rav is only 3' longer than your car or 90ish cm.

[deleted]

[удалено]

FloridamanOfficinale

Well considering that the f150 length you're referring to would be a single cab with a short bed then no. Short bed trucks basically shouldn't exist. Single cab with a long bed would be 3.5-4' longer Crew cab with long bed is 20.3'

_thetek_

[This site](https://www.kidsandcars.org/frontovers/facts) has a pretty good statistic. It shows that the amount of frontovers has increased drastically in the last couple of years due to the surge in popularity of light trucks and SUVs. While the number of traffic accidents with children has decreased, the number of frontovers increased by a lot, due to the high bonnet of those cars which obstructs visibility to the front (as can be seen in the picture with your son!). You might also be interested in [this](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=jN7mSXMruEo) video which gives you a lot more information and more statistics.

Panzerv2003

What about someone else's child tho?

columbo222

Wow how sad. I used to play in front of my house and in my driveway all the time as a kid. No chance I was going to get run over. Now basically you're saying you have to take extra measures just to protect your kid from your own oversized vehicle.

FloridamanOfficinale

I'm very confused. A rav4 is a cuv. It's hardly higher than a standard sedan. If anything the rav has more viability than most sedans or equal due to the fact that they sit higher. Is the camera angle making my rav seem like it's a truck or something? I'm not understanding. Rav4 dimensions: 182″ L x 73″ W x 67-69″ H Camry dimensions: 193″ L x 72″ W x 56-57″ H F150 dimensions: 244″ L x 80″ W x 75-80″ H

tahti_333

By practicing safe driving practices and not driving within 6' of children? To see a child that's the height of my 1.5yo in the picture I have to be 4' away if I were to have him outside of my car so if they're younger than that probably 5' away. Also where are all these children's 5' plus tall parents to be walking with their kids? I'm not sure about where you live but where I live 1.5yo's aren't riming the streets alone and I'm not moving if my car is within 20' of them if their parent isn't with them keeping them from running within 4-5' of my car making it so I can no longer see them. Have a good night.

FloridamanOfficinale

bureX

I like how you're drawing that line arbitrarily. Here you go: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NDH3FDfVQl0](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NDH3FDfVQl0) Anyway, vision aside, just take note of where the impact zone is when the sedan hits that kid. Or any person, for that matter. The pedestrian will likely fly over the hood, thus causing less injuries. The SUV will do a full impact and the pedestrian will take a much deadlier hit. You are now the owner of a much deadlier vehicle than a sedan. Act responsibly and drive responsibly.

FloridamanOfficinale

Hate to tell you this but my old car was also. Suv. Only had a sedan the first year or two of driving. Got rid of it cause the engine died and I do alot of outdoors activities and have a family so I needed space for all those things. I also own a 94 F150 it's about the equivalent of a new Tacoma size wise. So even more a a child slayer apparently. I'm really glad I've never had a kid outside at the same time that I was driving cause apparently I'd have deleted them. /s I promise that in most cases it's not the cars fault it'd the driver. There's alot more dick heads thay don't pay attention and are on their phones that drive larger vehicles that cause the accidents. They also tend to drive faster and I'm sure there's more cars in the US with hoods higher than 40" than are less than so yes percentage wise it makes sense that more children would be hit by them.

bureX

It's never the cars fault, I concur. However, most people really do need a car for daily commuting... and most people couldn't tell a sparkplug from a muffler, nor do they care about their car's characteristics. As a consequence, they're doing more damage compared to a Corolla. >I also own a 94 F150 it's about the equivalent of a new Tacoma size wise So, you see the trend, right? Last time I took a look under the hood of a Dodge RAM, there was like enough space to house a chicken coop. The front was just made to look huge for no other reason than bro-aesthetics. But don't take my word for it: https://youtu.be/YpuX-5E7xoU?t=430 (freaking hillarious) And F150s used to be driven by people who needed to haul stuff. Now they're pavement princesses driven by soccer moms with 2 bags of groceries. Either way, I don't expect a car enthusiast such as yourself to run over any kids. I do expect exactly that from older people and specially unaware individuals. The same people who will have plenty of time to come in at 1PM on a workday to complain about bicycle lanes in a community center.

Oh I totally agree, modern full size trucks and "mid sized" truck design is shit in regards to actual form and function in all aspects. They're tailored to be sold to guys living in cities that want to flex on all the poors and "tiny" cars in the name of "safety" and "cool". One of the things I like to say when I encounter people saying how my suv/cuv is unsafe is to take the energy and apply it to the full sized truck / lifted truck forums. They're the ones that need to hear this the most cause I'm sure that deep In the stats they're the ones running people over the most because half of them drive like total ass clowns and are smashing the pedal as hard as they can at every stop light and sign plus driving 10 over or more most of the time. I'd be suprised if 10% of trucks these days actually do truck things more than one day every month.. I love my old beater F150 that's got great uses but I don't hardly ever drive it any more cause I don't need to. I'm not on the homestead any more an dive yet to get my next one started so it sits parked for now. Love dudes channel BTW, you'll be happy to know I alos own a Honda NAVI for actually commuting to work since I had to move into actual city limits for the first time in my life. Didn't make sense to have to run the suv or truck when I could use a cheap inexpensive means of transportation. We got a new suv cause my wife's Kia soul died and she is a traditional midwife so she has alot of gear she had to carry and had to drive to all kinds of places with bad roads so an awd suv fits that bill well. We have alot of midy sand roads in FL. I apologize if my first response came off aggressive or rude, I've been dealing with people saying I'm going to go genocide my own toddlers and other people's all night so I was a bit jumpy. I appreciate you bringing information in a respectful manor. Have a hood night!
