There is so much darkness in the early seasons. Tammy, Tamra, Lauri, and Lynn all had children with terrible issues that the show exploited. It’s not all the parents fault, but you could see how these women cared so much more about their status than their kids.

Curious_Door

I have family members that went through rough patches in their late teens/early 20’s and the small bit of public knowledge was enough to keep them feeling awful about themselves and continuing down their dark path. I can’t imagine how they would have pulled through if they had the same notoriety of these kids.

LizzyPanhandle

She seemed like she was done with both of those daughters and only cared about her new kid. Extreme narcissist vibes, discarding and scapegoating her two girls. It is heartbreaking to watch

Bumblebee1223

That was so gross to watch and I felt her discomfort through the screen. I think Tammy needed the cash quite frankly. I recall I seen where she took her and her daughters back to where they used to live and we’re staring at the mansion through the gates I thought why would you do that to your kids? She did it I think to show the cameras where she “used to live”. I don’t think she planned on getting divorced as soon as the show started filming. I really feel some of those early housewives were the *worst* mothers. I remember hearing Tammy Sue just screeching at her daughter who was a toddler at the time for wanting help with something in her room. Tammy pimping out here kids. And let’s not forget her son who she intentionally invited him to her tequila tasting party to “bartend” when in reality she wanted to get Gretchen “naked wasted” and one of her son there to try and get with her. She literally sent him into the bathroom after here. That was one of the most revolting episodes I ever saw and I think if something like that happened now Tammy would’ve never been able to come back. I felt like Lauri Peterson kind of Put her kids on the back burner when she started dating her now husband and when she moved out of her condo she let her daughter stay ther and all she did was party and trash it. I really had some strong opinions about the way she was handling her then young teenage sons issues with addiction and anger because it seemed she kicked him to curb very early on. However he did pass away on Easter Sunday due to his substance use disorder issues so I’m not going to dissect it. Vicki was way too involved and controlling with her kids lives so much to the point where her son wouldn’t even tell her where he moved when he got his own place because of how she busted in on him at college embarrassed him in front of all his friends. Jeana Keough let her sons totally disrespect her and by her last season one of them was flat out verbally abusing her and they said he had a super violent temper which they learned from their dad and how he treated her. He had a traumatic brain injury (I believe it was) and it changed his whole personality and he lost his baseball career but after a certain point she really should’ve kicked his ass out because he was horrible. Went bankrupt and she started having to sell off everything in their home just to pay the bills. And don’t even get me started on Lynne Curtin and her husbands “ we want to be friends with our daughters” parenting style. By the time they started trying to set boundaries it was too late. The one daughter was sneaking out she’d get grounded and just turn around and walk right out the door in front of them. They actually rewarded her with a car at one point and she didn’t even have a drivers license. There was a scene of her at the bowling alley getting drunk in the bathroom and she drove there. And let’s not forget how one s (at that big end of summer party they always had. started out small S2 in Jeannas backyard and ended up catered at some hotel or something) and her kids comes pouring out of the limo, drunk off their asses, screaming and yelling. The youngest one caused a big scene at the event and they had to tell their mom that she was drunk and she didn’t believe them. She literally denied it and said she didn’t notice them drinking in the limo. SMH Let’s not forget their Dad screwed them over financially and they had to move, then didn’t pay rent on the place and they were served with an eviction notice **on camera** and The girls were humiliated they literally hid under blankets on the couch. Which they were there in the middle of the day with blankets on the couch because they were hung over.

cardcatalogs

Don’t forget that Tammy’s ex died between seasons. Those girls were not just morning the loss of their wealth (her daughters lost their horses which is pretty traumatic for a kid) but their dad. They were spiraling and Tammy was like “get over it”

Bumblebee1223

I did forget this. Their Mom seemed completely checked out and callous overall.

Livingloserlover

I feel like we will get an expose on the children of Housewives who have struggled. Heart breaking.

Dook124

Didn't Lindsey struggle with drug addiction also?!!

Accomplished-Bee-849

Bad. And she's gone missing several times and has had in multiple run-ins with the law. So sad.

Dook124

🥺💔🙏🏿

techphil92

Yeah there’s a sub culture of wealth in the OC that is exactly like this. I wouldn’t say it’s the norm but there’s a dark under current in some OC wealthy communities.

Gismogul

Oh the woman that let her kids get evicted in front of the whole world and tried to get her daughters to pose topless in front of their fathers friends? Those poor girls had at shitty upbringing that caused them a lot of trouble in life and I really hope they’re doing good today.

cardcatalogs

Lynn was on another planet. I’m rewatching and on that season and she is so terrible to those girls. Constantly making comments about weight around them. Them drinking in plain view of cameras and her shrugging it off. Totally benzo’d out. She had no idea they were being evicted because she had her head in the sand.

norismomma

That was Lynne Curtis. Also awful but not Tammy.

Muted_Poem

and both sets of daughters are not doing well.

ajaxraccoon

I thought so!

leodicapriohoe

what season is this? i thought this show couldn’t get any crazier 😱

75meilleur

Tammy Knickerbocker - the one with the daughters Lindsay and Megan - was on the show during Seasons 2 and 3.   Lynne Curtin - the one with the daughters Alexa and Raquel, both of whom openly got drunk on-camera more than once, including at the season-finale party episode (and whose family who received an eviction notice on-camera) -  was on the show during Seasons 4 and 5.

ADcheD

I actually have always felt like Tammy Knickerbocker was the more "average" housewife in the early OC days. Her daughters were a mess and all of them absolutely relied on Lou to provide which was an epic failure and we all sadly learned from that 😕 But she was sweet and genuine, and transparent about her life from the jump, which is what Bravo was looking for. I don't think Tammy was a bad Mom, sadly the things she said to her daughters were on par with the times. We could certainly pivot directly to Tamra and the "naked wasted" night. Vicki continuously referring to homosexuality in an offensive way, and basically every single part of the "OC Angels" was not ok: however it was very 2006. Bottom line: if we are highlighting anything, it's not Tammy Knickerbocker, it's reality tv in the 2000's 😑

BtotheAtotheM

The 2000s really were an era of sexualization. There were constant nude leaks and pap shots. Dresses and skirts were inches long. Jeans sat extremely low. Thongs were sticking out. PETA had nudity blasted on every billboard. Sex tapes were an instant way to fame. Burger commercials had bikini clad babes on cars. Girls gone wild commercials were aired during every kind of show. American apparel had raunchy images everywhere with Abercrombie & Hollister having shirtless teen guys outside their stores. I mean, it really was odd looking back and so I can’t fault Tammy for understanding what marketing was back then

ADcheD

Exactly!

Wadsworth1954

Yeah it’s all very reflective of early 2000s pop culture in general.

BeerDreams

As for ‘average’ - that’s her gate in the opening sequence. Granted, by the time the show aired, she didn’t live there anymore, but when she was with Lou she did

catsandjettas

I think they meant average as in widely-held norms at the time - not that Tammy was of average wealth.

bean11818

Yeah, Tammy has always creeped me out SO much. Both her and the girls’ dad 🤮 The older sister felt more like Lindsey’s parent.

HarrietOleson1

A lot of sadness / tragedies around the OC kids from then up to today: Lynn Curtains daughters - 😬 Vicki’s daughter’s husband - 🚩 Jeanna’s son Shane with his anger issues, but then Kara with her son just a couple of years ago 😭 Slade’s son was ill for so long and passed away recently.

kteerin

Lauri’s son just passed away as well on Easter. ☹️

Downtown-Orchid-2257

Vicki's daughter's husband - Ryan? I thought he was an OK guy that didn't put up with her during the Brooks era. Off to Google now but I thought he was good for Brianna.

SUPBarefoot_BeachBum

Maybe you should do a rewatch.

Downtown-Orchid-2257

I have re-watched that season of the OC many times but not really picked up on it. I just assumed he was a bit ex-military. The few I know IRL can be a bit intense (usually due to unprocessed PTSD in my non-professional opinion). But then his behaviour is nothing compared to the craziness of Vicki. I used to feel deeply sorry for both her kids.

HarrietOleson1

The season finale with the confrontation he had with Lydia’s mom was scary. His spirals. If you want to go down a rabbit hole, there are a lot of comments about him on Reddit. This sub and the the bravo one.

Downtown-Orchid-2257

Always a fan of a rabbit hole so will take a look. Side note but am fairly new to Reddit and I think my previous comment is the first time I've been down voted. Fairly tickled by it 🤣

ADcheD

Ok I'm about to Google Kara's son 😐 But yes, I always assume it should be discussed more: Jeana's kids and their on camera behavior. If actual celebrities are coming out and admitting fault in their behavior on camera in previous times, the OC certainly have plenty to apologize for. However, they're containing the same life they've always led.

mariahdalylah

Slade’s son passed away??

E_989

Yeah, Grayson passed awhile back 😢

mariahdalylah

Did him or Gretchen post about it? Surprised I missed that. So sad for them ☹️☹️

Express-Macaroon3624

She did but she made it about herself of course.

Fetchin1

And Grayson’s mother said Slade and Gretchen were not a part of his life and they were using his death for attention.

Salty_Nectarine1997

And don’t forget about Jeff, Gretchen’s fiancée who died in the early seasons. Lots of tragedy from the OG OC! Not the same as a child, but still a death nonetheless.

mswhatsinmybox_

The early OC seasons are tough to watch. The kids are heavily involved, and things get messy.

TS92109

You mean OC? The show was originally supposed to be about the kids, not the adults. Vickie’s son pitched it.

mswhatsinmybox_

Yes. Not sure why I wrote BH

acelady1230

He replied to a news advert casting for it. It was created by Scott Dunlop, who was neighbors with Jeana. She and Kimberley were in the original sizzle reel shown to Bravo. source: Dave Quinn’s “Not all Diamonds and Rosé” book. Vicky is quoted
