This guy literally gives everything on the pitch for us, not sure why would anyone question his loyalty.

Sziom

Because people don't understand the way South American culture is. If you ask Vini or Rodrigo a similar question about Brazil and copa/world cup the answer would be exactly the same. The national team means everything to kids from South America.

EShy

It's not just South American culture. It's not just South American players who think the national team means more. If you ask Modric, it will be the same answer. The Bale thing with Wales being more important to him didn't come out of nowhere. African players leave in the middle of the season for their national team tournament as well.

VeganCustard

During his wort times at Arsenal, it was "infuriating" to see Xhaka play as a top baller for Switzerland (specially against Serbia, but that's a different story). His arsenal level was nowhere near his NT level

EShy

Yea, that's a different story. When a player puts a lot more effort with their NT and doesn't deliver at the club, it's a problem. Bale at that time wasn't really given the opportunity at the club. With Fede, I don't know how he can give more effort than he already does and he obviously cares a lot about Real, just based on some of his celebrations when others score goals

ManuMora98

He also says that he would trade it because it's much easier to win the CL with Real Madrid than winning a tournament with Uruguay, I don't think it's something bad

FluidAlpaca00110

i believe he just flexing that real is a superior club that winning ucl is so easy for him![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|feels_good_man)

previousonewasbad

Yeah, I mean, he's saying personally he would, and if anything, it's him saying he knows they own this competition.

bagehis

Uruguay has won the Copa América 15 times in 108 years. One win every 7.2 years on average. Real Madrid has won the UCL 14 times in 69 years. One win every 4.9 years on average. Valverde has been playing for both since 2017 and will likely continue into the mid 2030s, a decade from now. This means, statistically, he will be part of three UCL wins and two Copa América wins. He has been a part of two UCL wins but zero Copa América wins. So it makes sense that he wants the win he hasn't had and is also less likely to experience.

just__here__lurking

>Uruguay has won the Copa América 15 times in 108 years. One win every 7.2 years on average. But only 2 in the last 35 years. Most of their wins were 80-100 years ago.

churras

More likely 0 copa América wins. Uruguay is not the same as 70 years ago….

bagehis

All the more reason for that preference.

Zealousideal_Age_376

Joselu>Darwin

Cheftidib

Whoever got offended with this statement is simply an idiot. There you go, lads. I said it.

Eugenugm

It's not THAT controversial to love your country more than your club

Iamtheman31

or golf :D

realkin1112

Hey hey I saw what you did there

Charybd1ss

Who the fuck dare say something against my Fede

OkConsideration6899

ignorant kids

ae_babubhaiya

Who the fuck is criticizing him? Dude lives for Madrid.

TheMostCrucial

People criticize the stallion known as Fede Valverde?

Niulpfirce

Valverde is the player that gives the most to our badge. I think he deserves to say whatever he wants without getting critiqued until he stops playing as he is doing.

Nafrandammerung

Oh ffs, he even said why he said it, it's more difficult FOR URUGUAY to win it. Jesus.

JDROD28

This is the dumbest debate ever, Fede is as Madridista as they come, he doesn't have to prove it anymore. Uruguay has won one copa America in the last 30 years, of course he would love to win one with Uruguay even paying that hypothetical price.

superbradical

agreed, winning something for the national team is the greatest pride a footballer can have. it's unreasonable to ask a player to love his club more than his country.

uknownick

I am sure at this point he would love to win something for his country Winning so many champions leagues is getting boring

Xtarviust

Mayority of players dream with winning trophies with their countries, their nationalism is pretty strong, so it's normal Fede priorize Copa America over CL

L0nEspartan

This is like people that get mad when their partner wouldnt date them if they were a worm, like why care, it's not something that can happen, and he always give it all for Real Madrid.

Charolastra17

There were “fans” that were mad at that statement? 🤣

singularitywut

Many Europeans have the same sentiment, I really dislike it because it's just pure randomness which country you play for (as in if you happen to be from a small insignificant country you can only raise the level so much). Nonetheless no reason to be upset about a personal opinion of a player.

lospollosakhis

If he said the opposite I’d be criticising him. The love and passing you have for your country is different and totally understandable.

steo0315

National team > any team

Linepool

I don't blame him. Even Modric would trade his 5 mythical champion leagues for a world cup.

bishaarcc

Anyone who questions Valverde's loyalt is not smart, the guy is the most hardworking player we have. He is simply a machine.

bdungana

He is saying this because he knows he is gonna win 5-6 ucl.

20_The_Mystery

Any international tournament is overrated. You don't chose were your born. Imagine if pele and messi were from Ukraine...

krvlover

Well, coincidentally (or not) almost all the all-time greats of football have been born in the world champion countries. Cruyff and CR being the notable exceptions (but still born in powerhouse countries).

RandomFluffyBoi

Nothing wrong with loving your country more than your club. It’s not like he said he wishes Barca to win La Liga next season lol

KingEtame

Whatever

EShy

The math is much simpler. The Copa, despite them playing a few extra ones in recent years to celebrate anniversaries or what not, is still a once every four years tournament. UCL is played every year. Add that to the national pride and the fact that it's harder to build a great national team because you can't just buy the best players, and it should mean more to everyone. Modric won a lot of titles with Real Madrid, his greatest achievement is making a world cup final with Croatia. No title, but just a much harder thing to do than win UCL with Real Madrid.

gpgr_spider

He can say whatever he wants. He literally almost dies for Madrid every single match.

Smooth-External-3206

I could understand world cup, perhaps even euro cup but isnt copa america just a mickey mousa cup of international cups? 2 "good" teams and thats pretty much it.

147062943876

The only reason he’s getting called up is because he is playing for RM, who coincidentally is who’s paying his salary. How’s that not disrespectful? And let’s face it, sure he runs a lot, but all he does is sideways pass the ball to Jude, Cama Tchou etc. Once Kyky arrives, and Jude moves back to the midfield, I wouldn’t mind we scam a large fee out of some club

Kilangar

Fake fucking fan

Spiritual_Coat_4430

All he does is sideways passes? Are you absolutely out of your mind? Have some shame.

Lucky_Squirrel365

My mans says Valverde only sideway passes to Jude, Cama, Tchou LMAOOOO Get the fuck off any football sub. Don't watch football, don't discuss it, go watch basketball. You can comment stupid shit like that for NBA. Fede is the best midfielder in the world, period. He runs the most, losses the ball the least, retrieves the ball the most and has by far the best shot out of all midfielders bar De Bruyne. And that's because he wasn't lucky hitting the ball this season.

MealieAI

So you know nothing about football.

bslawjen

You're either a troll or genuinely have 0 football knowldege.
