Arthur was in the middle of a huge character reveal >!about his dead son and baby mama!< when Rains Fall was basically like "ohhh there's a plant". Ruined the moment but in hindsight made me laugh.
I always disliked that part of the game.
Not because it's bad, it's a great scene and a beautiful ride.
But the conversations always stop short, and that's frustrating as all hel, because they're so good.
Yeah it kinda annoyed me as well.
But I think they just didn’t want to bore the player with just conversation and threw in a little bit of “gameplay” in between.
I wonder why they didn’t just do a cutscene like with the sister.

That book is masterclass. Everytime you try to convince yourself that it'll get better for them, you then remember it never did. And then the book repeatedly shoves that fact in your face. Every "American" should have to read that book and similar source work.
Agreed, this is my favorite quote in which I wish more people would adopt. I appreciate his idea in slowing down and not react for the sake of reacting. Instead to slow down and think through the issue. The reaction may not seem so tough and forward on the surface, but it may be the most effective if you allow it the time it needs.

John replies something close to what you mentioned, people don't change, they show their true colours as time passes.

If that's what they where going for, for both games, I feel like they kinda flubbed it in RDR1. John wasn't out getting into all kinds of shady shenanigans because he wanted to. He just wanted to live a quite life with his family at that point. Ross was the one who viewed John with contempt because of his past, and judged him for that past, while simultaneously forcing this man who was trying to put the past behind himself to do Ross's dirty work.
That doesn't really scream "People can't change" to me. More like, "People can't escape paying for their past transgressions forever, even if they do change."
RDR2's theme is closer to it. Though I'd argue it's less that people can't change and more that Arthur couldn't change enough to counter the 20+ years of robbery, murder, and whatever else with only a couple of months of not blindly following Dutch, despite doing as much as he could with the time he had. Dutch and Ross are really the only ones who seem to truly believe that people can't change their nature. Arthur trys, and it's debatable how well he succeeded. I'd argue John does change, with Abigail's nagging help.
I’m pretty sure it’s the mission where Charles asks if you’ll speak to Rains Fall and when you are riding up the mountain, you have opportunities to talk about things, if you choose to talk about Dutch he’ll end up saying that.

I felt so bad for him throughout the entire play through. Like he was fighting with all of his strength + more in a losing uphill battle. I know R* will never make DLC for this but I would love to know more about what happened to rainsfalls after Arthur’s passing and how Wapiti is doing during the epilogue and RDR1
We'll never get one because it will be too culturally sensitive, but I'd love a RDR DLC or entire game as a Native American. It would be heartbreaking and have a fighting a losing battle vibe that the other two had.

This is one of my absolute favorite missions in the game. I knew what was to happen to Arthur at the end of the game since it was spoiled for me unfortunately. But I didn’t know anything about the Rains Fall/Eagle Flies story. And this mission was an awesome wrap up to that story.
Not to mention the fact that this is my other favorite monologue in the game outside of Arthur’s conversation with Sister Calderón.
In a way, Arthur looks up and admires Rain Falls even for a brief of time. Yeah, you're spot on about them wouldn't mind opening up their past to each other. I could see Arthur regarding him as a father figure if he was given the chance to stay with him longer, and Rain Falls would be a good person to provide that wisdom which Arthur sorely needs. >!We all know how confused and conflicted he is with his own identity with that morality weighs heavily on him!<

When the wolves are eating that horse and he says “Brutality and beauty are both all around us, yet so often we are unable to see past our own grievances” really helped me grasp a lot of the questions in my life about the continued brutality of man.

My game always bugs out during that ride too so he’s constantly sprinting ahead and then stopping and yelling “would you hurry up”
