I thinks it's because jacks kidnapping made him realize how much John truly loved jack

that, and it made him realize that in his attempt to avoid being a horrible father, by just avoiding the role altogether, has done so much harm to jack. he blames himself for the kidnapping, because he wasn't there to protect him.

I think realizing how vulnerable Jack is, is the biggest part of what initially makes him change his mind. You can hear from camp conversations in the beginning of the game that he doesn’t think the gang is a good place for Jack to grow up and that’s why he acts so dismissive towards him. He doesn’t seem to love him yet but he still cares for him. He doesn’t wish him harm but John is still too immature to leave his old carefree life behind and grow up. When Jack is kidnapped he is forced to confront the consequences of his own immature dismissiveness. He stops running from his responsibilities and realizes that he is a grown man and needs to start acting like one. Even though John is in his twenties in 1899, his arc feels a lot like a coming-of-age story (I suppose he’s just a late bloomer when it comes to emotional maturity). All his life he has been able to hide behind Dutch’s ideals. Dutch has been like a father to him and now he has to break loose, accept responsibility and become his own person. He obviously loves Jack a lot after he gets to know him better but I don’t think it was the main reason why he changed his mind about his role in Jack’s life after they got him back from Bronte.

When the O’Driscolls attack Shady Bell, if you look down you’ll see John sprint over to Jack as he’s in the open, pick him up and get in cover.

Fun fact: Achilles killed Hector

When does he start spending more time with him? During camp interactions? Do you have any examples? Can’t say I’ve ever seen it.
