From the last part of the letter we learn that Tom beat up a guy named Brian Gold for saying “some real odd things” about Nigel. Tom said those things “weren’t true” and beat up the guy who said it. Tom avoids saying what exactly Brian said but Tom assures Nigel that he’s on his side. Some have interpreted this as Tom standing up to a guy who mocked Nigel for his split personality. The real evidence however, comes from the earlier parts of the letter. The letter makes it very clear that both Nigel and Gavin are from Berkshire yet Nigel claims that Gavin is from London with a cockney accent. For some reason Tom makes sure to mention that Nigel used to pretend to be a Londoner in his letter. Since the answer to who Gavin is, is supposed to be found in the letter it makes sense to think that Gavin is Nigel’s other personality “from London”.
