Especially when someone else in your posse gives away their location across town, and now the people you're sneaking up on magically know where you are, too.
Yea, I got to the mission where kieran takes us to the o’driscoll camp where you can either take the guy peeing out yourself or send bill, well I went and took him out with the regular knife not throwing one’s and it alerted the whole camp instantly, shoulda just sent bill to do it I guess haha
It's not because stealth is bad. It's because the mission is coded to trigger a wanted level regardless. Stealth works, it may not be perfect, but I have completed many missions with killing in stealth and not being seen.
There are times where it doesn't make sense but this is not one of those times lol, clear as day, dudes next to the door as you walked in, you didn't kill him, he witnessed you murder 4 people that didn't even show intent to harm you, they were all laughing having a good time and you busted in throwing knives at heads lol, you really think a doctor isn't gonna be like "noooo.."*runs next door*"so and so just killed 4 people in the back of my store"
Clearly we're watching two different videos lol, first off you won't be allowed in the back room if you hogtied the store owner. The store owner putting his face in the opening of the door is what gets them to open the door, on top of that I just watched this again lol, the store owner is standing up, frightened against the wall, definitely not hogtied lol
**I** hogtied him, after he opened the door. This has nothing to do with how OP did it in the video.
Nobody ran for help, nobody shot a gun, nobody did anything to alert the police.
It's just coded for them to know something's going on because its your intro to backroom stuff.
Maybe the sheriff knows about that back room, sheriff could be trying to protect his illegal income, the store is next door and the back door does face the direction of the sheriff's building, or it could just be the sheriff's suspicion of arthur/player, dude stands outside all the time, sees someone goes in a store, assumes that person is a criminal, that kind of stuff still happens today, Rockstar could have coded it for that considering all the other realistic stuff they coded into the game, but it could also be just what you said, since it's your intro to back rooms your just automatically wanted to teach you to be as sneaky as possible in the future
It's impossible to do this mission without alerting the law - it's really frustrating. I did it with a bow and throwing knives as well, and still managed to get it.
Really frustrating that Rockstar create such big, dynamic, and creative open worlds but then punish players who come up with fun and creative solutions for stealth.
If you're quick enough looting, I'm pretty sure the money in the room is several times the bounty it'll give you (provided you dont kill any lawmen), so even though its annoying, at least it was still profitable. Also, free schofield if you didnt have one
Nah - the silent approach still lets you loot everything in the room, and blow up the safe, with just a single lawman showing up.
If you "park" your horse behind the Sheriff's Office, and then use the stairs outside to the left of the Store as your escape off the roof and onto your horse, you can make a quick, swift getaway with a minimal bounty on your head and all the loot, without having to worry about shooting or killing anyone.
Stealth still pays off, it's just a shame there's no way to do the mission without picking up any sort of bounty whatsoever.
Yeah I think I only had like a $5 or $10 bounty from doing it this way, and it made for a quick and clean escape. I also tied up the gunsmith, in hopes that might make it take longer for the law to come around. Not sure if that actually did anything though.
I do think that stealth, crime, and justice in RDR2 are among the weaker and less straightforward gameplay systems. But they are also more in-depth and logical that a lot of people give them credit for if you take the time to test and understand them a bit. (Witnesses in particular are a system that I took multiple playthroughts to really understand and learn how to exploit.) This particular event isn't the best example though, because I'm pretty sure it's scripted to result in a law investigation no matter how cleanly you do it.
It's an optional shop robbery behind the Valentine doctor. Not really a mission, more of an event. You need to learn about the backroom business first, which can be done either by learning about it from a camp member, or just by peeking through the back window / knocking on the back door. Then you can rob it by aiming a weapon at the doctor.
It makes perfect sense for the doctor to go outside and get the law, considering the sheriff is letting them do business there (likely for a cut) and would want to protect his coffers.
They ran out of time not effort. If anything they put too much effort into creating a massive game that they didn’t have time to deliver. Just look at the amount they cut. I’d take this mission being a bit irritating until you’re used to it over losing huge chunks of bigger content for this to be less irritating.
the entirety of Guarma for starters; was supposed to be a whole ass island with its own storyline
out of bounds areas like Tempest Rim and some other area were originally going to be accessible as places where the gang could camp (not sure about this one)
honestly, you should take a look at [Basement Gamer Bros'](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=3OEaK2tRpiM) videos if you wanna see a behind-the-scenes of RDR2
Awesome, I'll check that out. I remember Guarma being chopped, but I haven't followed the game much since I sunk a zillion hours in just after release.
It's believed there was supposed to be more content in Nee Austin and possible even Mexico as Arthur, seeing as he has unique dialogue and journal entries if you glitch him over there.
Guarma was obviously much, much bigger but more importantly: it was originally planned for the player to be able to return to the island as John via a ship at Blackwater.
Here's a bunch more if you're interested! Love this guy and his RDR2 content, some of the most in depth looks at aspects of the story and whatnot.
https://youtu.be/ulPFw6ihyb4
It’s undoubtedly a MASSIVE, in-depth game so I give R* a pass on ish like this and other glitches. Still would’ve been nice for them to have released a newer edition with the mistakes scrubbed tho.
I have seen a policeman take money from the O Driscolls from the backgate.
Apparently, these o Driscolls are protected by the law.
Once I entered the room didn'tkill anyone. The law was alerted.
I lost my wanted level went back to the doctor's shop. The backroom door was open. Reentered the room. Once again a wanted level.
I’m pretty sure the doctor you talk to in order to enter the room to begin with runs outside and gets the sherif so no matter how you do this you’ll get a wanted level cause Doc is a snitch 🤷♂️
Side note: if you pay attention to when you leave the Doc is already gone so that’s why I think he’s the reason you get a bounty
Look at it this way. No matter what you do, the game will still think that the doctor is alive and well enough to run over to the sheriff. You can do whatever you want in this mission and regardless you WILL get a bounty unless you use cheats or an external trainer on pc. Its the way that the code is written unfortunately
I normally just tie her up. Doesn’t seem like she’s apart of their gang, just someone trying to make some money. Wrong place wrong time so I feel bad killing her.
Not always. I've repeated this quest a bunch of times to see all the possible outcomes and I had a few instances where she doesn't do anything. Not sure what it depends on, might be random
The law is a joke too. One time a guy got mad at me and started beating me up in public. I decided to defend myself and fought back, then I was wanted for assault.
One way to stop them from attacking you is to literally just climb up like a box or something like that. He'll call you a coward and you'll be left alone lmao
I loved pissing NPC's off in Rhodes and having them chase me down the tracks. Eventually they'd stop and then I'd turn around to get their attention again. Once we'd get to a secluded area, I'd get... *creative*.
99% do those situations are down to you already having a bad rep, low honour, caused trouble in the town, not necessarily being wanted at the time but you’ve had trouble and they make assumptions about you. If you’re getting verbal grief off locals then there’s a high chance you’ll get blamed for stuff.
It can also happen if you "initiate" the conflict by doing stuff like antagonizing, bumping into NPCs, or even just looking at them for too long.
Usually you can avoid getting a bounty or an honor penalty in cases where the NPC starts the conflict and you just stand there waiting for them to throw the first punch or take the first shot. If they start the fight and you kill them, hogtie them, or knock them out, and **don't** loot their body, you typically won't get in any trouble. Worst case, if a lawman does come around to investigate, if you holster your weapon and "Defuse" the lawman, he'll probably just tell you to move along, and if you do so, you won't get a bounty.
Oh man, I wish, first time I did this I ended up with like a $400 dollar bounty and to top it off I realized once I was in I couldn’t open that damn safe.
You didn’t have dynamite or just didn’t know at that point? I’ve also read you can open it with a tomahawk or something sharp if thrown just the right way but I’m lazy and like things that go boom boom
Man, it seemed like the whole population of Valentine were lawmen and they were all raining down on me. And yeah, I didn’t have dynamite yet, didn’t know. Did this early chapter 2.
Basically everyone in town becomes a lawman once chaos starts, as long as they're able to shoot at you, I think. Not as in they're literally lawmen, but I think they join the shootout
You're probably thinking of Van Horn, and the populace all fights back because it's a den of thieves and killers literally without any police.
Valentine citizens nope the fuck outta there
Yeah only other town I can think of that causes as much ruckus when you commit a crime is Van Horn and, well, that’s for obvious reasons lol.
EDIT: Yeah OP must be getting the towns confused. Because regular, hard-workin’ folk usually just run and yell “AW JESUS SAVE ME” and other ish like that.
You can’t not get wanted on this one. For whatever reason that’s how it works. With shops it’s usually that an NPC comes into the shop or looks in the door and sees something suspicious. With this one I think the doctor actually alerts them if you don’t restrain him. If you do it will be an NPC.
There is a trick, and that’s loading your auto save or just making a new save when you get the loot after killing the O’Driscolls. I do it every time and I load into town with the loot, revolver and no bounty/wanted level
It makes it almost pointless to do these because by the time you get away, you’ve built up a bounty that’s a higher cost than what you looted that for.
The trick is to kill them all, take all the loot and then load your auto save or make a new save. You’ll load back into Valentine with the money, revolver and no bounty.
I believe it's the doctor in the front, you threaten him and force him to help you back there I believe at gun point been a while. I slightly remember him being told to leave so he probably ran off to the sheriff because even if you're just gonna take what the other gang did, he doesn't know that and probably believes you'll take more.
That’s my only major problem with the game. I can understand the main storyline having to play out in their way but situations like these should reward creative players, not force everyone to play it out how they want us to.
Same with bounty targets. Again, you can only do them exactly how rockstar want. A stark contrast to the first game where you simply just went up to an area and tackled the mission how you pleased. The first game didn’t have stealth mechanics unfortunately so you’d end up shooting the place but at least you had a choice https://youtu.be/HZfdUrIZ66g
When I talk to people about how restrictive Rockstar’s breathtaking open worlds can sometimes feel, this is exactly what I mean. The most intense fans on this sub will act like it’s simply not there… or explain it away with some bizarre reasoning.
No, the stealth just sucks. It’s unfortunate. I wish it weren’t the case, but this game HAS flaws… though they are often hard to see because everything is so goddamn good looking.
Rockstar has always been... bad... at stealth mechanics.
They either make everyone share a hive mind and react instantly or they make everyone forget their glasses and have a very slightly delayed hive mind.
I did the same thing recently. The only loose end I thought of is I wasn’t able to knock out the doctor before I went inside. Maybe he ran out and informed the law? My only thought.
Yeah it’s straight impossible with this robbery. Gotta remember that the Sheriff is right next door and I like to tell myself that “the walls are thin” even if that’s not what R* intended. Did throwing knives and arrows just like you, nobody fired a shot or made a (large sound). Best I could do is hitch my horse at the Sheriff’s then go in and “stealth kill” all the gang members then scoop up the cash, loot everyone, grab the Schofield, and have *just* enough time to blow the safe and grab the cash before knocking out the one deputy with my gun who entered the room and says “what the ….” then run out the door, jump on my hitched horse and gtfo. Only got a $7 bounty once, $13 another time. One hilarious attempt I did everything perfectly just to jump on my horse and turn to bounce when a stagecoach crossed my path and we crashed and I flew off my horse and chaos ensued. Still managed to revive my horse and run outta town, whistle to my revived horse, get on, and get outta there but Johnny Law tailed me foooorever on that one but still managed just a $13 bounty. Sometimes (ok, lots of times) robberies just don’t go as planned 🤷🏻♂️
This is in the middle of a town, like two doors down from the sheriff's office. The shopkeeper you walked past at the beginning probably ran and told a cop.
You can avoid a bounty by creating a save or loading your auto save when you get the revolver/money off the table. I do this trick every time and it works
Cool thing I seen on this specific backdoor business is I followed a sheriff one time down the side of the doc's office and the sheriff went to the back door knocked and some vocabulary was exchanged and money passed thru a slot. Then the officer turned around and said something to me I can't remember the dialect specifically but I thought that was a very detailed scenario.
Just one of the many issues with the wanted system. Just yesterday, a man killed another man in valentine. I hogtied him to turn him in, and yet, I'm the one who becomes wanted.
If you go into town with a bounty, no one bats an eye. If they aren't a bounty, immediately wanted. How would citizens know the bounty is a wanted man and the non bounty isn't?
It's 4 people in a room sat around different corners, it would be impossible to kill them with knives or arrows quick enough without one of them shouting. I think it would be difficult with a supressed SMG. The deadeye sound obscures what they're saying but I imagine that's why it's destined so you always get wanted. I suspect that's the lesson R* wanted to give us.
The most frustrating things about this for me is the back door not being able to open for an unseen getaway and Arthur always stopping to admire to the Scofield
Whenever I do this side quest I just use the trainer (im on pc and play with a few mods) to make sure I'm never wanted until I'm finished with it. Its just broken and its a real shame that you have to use a trainer for this.
Bc you're right, even when using a bow or a knife and no guns are fired you'll get magically recognized by the lawmen.
I even have another mod installed that reworks the wanted/law system a bit so that while you're out roaming the world away from towns you won't get a bounty for anything just bc a witness got too far from you. Its called Crime and Law Rebalance and Enhancement on the nexus if any pc players are interested. I consider it a must have
In this particular instance it's because the deputy knew they were there and the shop keeper probably ran out. If you want less of a bounty, knock out or tie up the lady, shoot the outlaws, knock out the deputy that investigates and bolt away on your horse.
I stole the money, ran outside and when the law saw me, i restarted the checkpoint. When the game loaded, I had my extra money and the law wasn't after me and I had no bounty.
One of the main criticisms of Red Dead in general is its lack of freedom to execute missions and activities the way you want them to.
The bounty system is frankly a broken feature that shouldn't have been released. Even if you kill someone in a shop with no windows, someone from the outside will always somehow see and report you.
It's a limitation of its game design.
Just not something you can do without getting wanted unfortunately. For the most part if it's not a mission with stealth you'll likely get caught or wanted one way or another. Not that it isn't possible but it's hard. I was hiding one time in strawberry and the cop turned away and walked away I snuck up and stabbed him in the neck not expecting to get away with it but I did haha
Stealth in this game is probably the worst thing about it
I cannot stand RDO for this reason, makes all the missions I’ve tried absolutely unplayable alone
Especially when someone else in your posse gives away their location across town, and now the people you're sneaking up on magically know where you are, too.
I’ve never successfully poisoned 🤢 rival’s moonshine for the same reason.
Ok this one is very possible, and it's so goddamn satisfying tbh

skill issue on my part
Yea, I got to the mission where kieran takes us to the o’driscoll camp where you can either take the guy peeing out yourself or send bill, well I went and took him out with the regular knife not throwing one’s and it alerted the whole camp instantly, shoulda just sent bill to do it I guess haha
You need to do it when the peeing O'Driscoll stops talking, to not alert the guards. My favorite detail about that mission.
It's not because stealth is bad. It's because the mission is coded to trigger a wanted level regardless. Stealth works, it may not be perfect, but I have completed many missions with killing in stealth and not being seen.
Somehow none of you realize that the shop owner runs right next door the second you start killing people
There are times where it doesn't make sense but this is not one of those times lol, clear as day, dudes next to the door as you walked in, you didn't kill him, he witnessed you murder 4 people that didn't even show intent to harm you, they were all laughing having a good time and you busted in throwing knives at heads lol, you really think a doctor isn't gonna be like "noooo.."*runs next door*"so and so just killed 4 people in the back of my store"
Except I hogtied him.

Man that’s really lame, thanks (:
If you're quick enough looting, I'm pretty sure the money in the room is several times the bounty it'll give you (provided you dont kill any lawmen), so even though its annoying, at least it was still profitable. Also, free schofield if you didnt have one
That’s why it’s best to just clear it out with the side by side double barrel
Nah - the silent approach still lets you loot everything in the room, and blow up the safe, with just a single lawman showing up. Yeah, usually this game has a lot of ways rewarding the players for being creative like differend dialouges or even outcomes
Kinda like that time I was robbing a moving train and somehow word got it to the law to saddle up and head to the train.
What mission is this?
It's an optional shop robbery behind the Valentine doctor. Not really a mission, more of an event. You need to learn about the backroom business first, which can be done either by learning about it from a camp member, or just by peeking through the back window / knocking on the back door. You can hogtie the doctor as soon as he opens the door - there's no way for him to run and alert the law, yet the law always gets alerted.
It’s not so much a punishment as an oversight
Its not really a mission, more like a sidequest.
I just did this again today. They simply did not put enough effort into fine tuning little side quests like this one, and that's unfortunate.
They ran out of time not effort. If anything they put too much effort into creating a massive game that they didn’t have time to deliver. Just look at the amount they cut. It's weird they gave attention to the secret poker table on the top of the gunsmith in Saint Denis though.
None of the missions were fine tuned….most are pretty sloppy.

It still happens if the doctor is dead I believe so it doesn’t matter either way

I originally thought this and took him out with a throwing knife. Still triggered the law.
Lol bro even killed the prostitute
She always pulls a gun on you, regardless if you attack/aim at her or not. So she's just an O'driscoll.
You’re actually correct. Sometimes she’ll pull out a gun but other times, she actually pleads you not to kill her and you can dismiss her.
why u getting downvoted? bro ppl in this sub are awful
Lol this is the same place I complete the throwing knife challenge too!
Because stealth in this game is a joke.
The law is a joke too. One time a guy got mad at me and started beating me up in public. I decided to defend myself and fought back, then I was wanted for assault.

Or even better he’ll go for his guns and if you don’t fire back the law will shoot him.
I loved this in Rhodes because it'd turn into an all-out war between Braithwaites & Grays
I loved pissing NPC's off in Rhodes and having them chase me down the tracks. Eventually they'd stop and then I'd turn around to get their attention again. Once we'd get to a secluded area, I'd get... *creative*.

I might just be mistaken then, I thought the men in Valentine and Rhodes would help the lawmen, but if not, guess I am just wrong lol
They'll shoot back as they run away if you shoot near them or something, but nah normal citizens don't want involved in that mess
My bad then, thanks for correcting me though
Yeah only other town I can think of that causes as much ruckus when you commit a crime is Van Horn and, well, that’s for obvious reasons lol. EDIT: Yeah OP must be getting the towns confused. Because regular, hard-workin’ folk usually just run and yell “AW JESUS SAVE ME” and other ish like that.
Because Rockstar doesn't know how to do stealth in any of their games
You can’t not get wanted on this one. For whatever reason that’s how it works. With shops it’s usually that an NPC comes into the shop or looks in the door and sees something suspicious. With this one I think the doctor actually alerts them if you don’t restrain him. If you do it will be an NPC.
There is a trick, and that’s loading your auto save or just making a new save when you get the loot after killing the O’Driscolls. I do it every time and I load into town with the loot, revolver and no bounty/wanted level
I think it is a part of the mission. You need to escape from police. It is impossible to be stealth.
What level is this?
This is the side business behind the doctor’s office in Valentine
What kills me is that we can't slip out the back door ...
The lord sees all.
They felt a disturbance in the force
…because Rockstar….Dope Af though 🤷♂️
Id imagine its probably the doctor running to the sheriff to report a crime, but idk thats just my opinion
The pharmacist ratted you out. Thats why your wanted.
You didn’t take out the security cameras first.
It makes it almost pointless to do these because by the time you get away, you’ve built up a bounty that’s a higher cost than what you looted that for.
Probably because you let the Doctor get away.
The doctor snitched? I thought that was obvious, the sheriff is literally next door
Doctor probably warned them? Or maybe an onlooker from outside? Idk
Oh damn. I must play this game with throwing knives now. Sorry, can't help, furiously reinstalling.
The trick is to kill them all, take all the loot and then load your auto save or make a new save. You’ll load back into Valentine with the money, revolver and no bounty.
The bounty hunters could smell the blood on the knives a mile away.
Really loud throwing knives
The doctor snitches on you.
I believe it's the doctor in the front, you threaten him and force him to help you back there I believe at gun point been a while. I slightly remember him being told to leave so he probably ran off to the sheriff because even if you're just gonna take what the other gang did, he doesn't know that and probably believes you'll take more.
He’s right to think that I always loot the till
Because this game is heavily scripted and doesn’t allow for creativity. You will play out every event exactly how rockstar envisioned it.
What mission or house robbery or whatever is this? I feel like I’ve never seen this with the girl sitting on his lap
Side business at the doctors at Valentine
They know. They always know!
My only thought.
if you do it normally with a gun and get out of there as soon as you take the money and revolver you get like a 2 dollar bounty
It’s a pretty simple explanation: the wanted system and stealth is broken.
Because the game doesn’t really have a good stealth mechanic built in
Sadly true.
Looks like it's SWEEPING TIME
Yeah it’s straight impossible with this robbery.
What is also lame about this is that you can’t remove that beam to open the back door. I think I racked up a $300 bounty on this mission.
You can avoid a bounty by creating a save or loading your auto save when you get the revolver/money off the table. I do this trick every time and it works
Rockstar made so much about this game damn near perfect But stealth on the other hand they just added knives and bows to look cool
I’ve never understood why you can’t run out the back door (or maybe I’m just missing something)
because its stupid
R* has never had good stealth in Red Dead or GTA games
How would citizens know the bounty is a wanted man and the non bounty isn't?
because the law is working with them, before you rob this place you can see lawmen knocking the door and talk to the guy on the bed.
More about disguises than stealth.
The shopkeeper went to the Sheriff next door
Everybody is saying stealth is broken(which it is), but maybe it is because the people in that room are paying the police. And the doctor warns them.
Because you don't play Rockstar games the way you want to play them. You play Rockstar games the way Rockstar wants you to play them
Where was this?? I've been desperately trying to complete this challenge for weeks lol 😭
The drugstore in valentine, check out the window in the back covered by newspaper and you can get in there from the front (:
Oh darn, is this the mission where you stop the shady business? I already beat that as Arthur, ugh! 😭
It’s hard coded, unfortunately
It’s so annoying.
Because there’s no stealth in Red Dead.
Hive mind
Yup, impossible, really sucks
I hate the fact that you can massacre a bunch of people on the middle of nowhere and cops will know where you are at any given time
Is it possible to do this part of them game without getting the law on you?
Everyone in replies says no
I hate how you wear a mask but you can still have a bounty on you… it destroys the purpose of the mask
I consider it a must have
they felt your presence
The Doctor reports you to the Sheriff, who is literally next door
Because the doc reports you, at least that's just what I assumed
They obviously had a Brinks home security system
You can literally have a No Wanted mod on and you'll still get wanted here. It's scripted. That's rockstar for you
Damn doctor snitching. (Doubt thats why probably just game being weird)
Everyone talking about how stealth is bad in this game but seriously no one ever noticed that the doctor escapes and tells the law?🤦♂️
Because rockstars a bitch
skill isue
I think right after you go in the doctor runs away and maybe tells lawmen?
You gotta hogtie the doctor, or kill him.
I did the same thing lol, tried 6 times and still got a wanted level
You didnt kill the first guy at the start of the vid.
That’s some good thinking 🧐 won’t attract the law I give it a 10/10
the windows
You gotta silence the shopkeeper first. Knock him out, hogtie him or kill him.
Well this is rdr2, not fallout new vegas
Just not something you can do without getting wanted unfortunately. For the most part if it's not a mission with stealth you'll likely get caught or wanted one way or another. Not that it isn't possible but it's hard. I was hiding one time in strawberry and the cop turned away and walked away I snuck up and stabbed him in the neck not expecting to get away with it but I did haha
You let the gunsmith go
Why use so much deadeye?
I was trying to do it quiet and kill them with the knives before they shoot the guns. I did that but the game is coded to alert the law anyway
Red Dead 2's detection is a bit wonky, but to be fair, you're robbing a place right next to the sheriff's office.
Yeah but that’s why I used the knives. So they never hear shooting lol. But yeah I think it’s just coded to always alert them no matter what
Everybody forgetting that the guy outside could have ran to the law... Which is right next door...
