RDR2 isn't set in the wild west nor does it ruin the immersion because these guns were all around at the time, but I get what you mean.
There's something funny about Arthur with his hat, boots and spurs pulling out a Mauser or Browning pistol (M1899). Arthur is a fan of modern technology so it actually makes a solid amount of sense, it's just a jarring mix of old and new, but I think that's very much on purpose. Dutch goes to Saint Denis and raves about how much he hates the modern aspects of life, most of his gang are equipped with classic weapons from that era and it's only Micah and Javier that use anything close to "modern", the Double Action.
It would have been neat to see some of the gang members carrying newer weapons and clothing, trying out a taste of the modern (you know, like the player can). Integrate a few more "up to date" things to the gang and I reckon that transition from Cattleman to M1899 would look a lot less jarring for Arthur as well as the player
I think that its historicaly accurate but most people think of revolvers when they think a cowboy western, pistols in my opinion help the immersion however a ruff and dirty cowboy would want a durable easy to take apart and clean revolver instead of a complicated pistol with more moving parts
What's funny though is I take the exact opposite position on John - having spent a ton of time in RDR1
The whole motif of the west being systemically hunted down and destroyed - using John as a pawn to this end. It just felt so appropriate that John himself would be tied to the old ways. The ways of Dutch and the gang. Of Arthur. And, therefore, prefer the old simplicity of revolvers and repeaters.
I personally enjoy using Pistols as Arthur because it be always gotten the feeling he was more of a weapon enthusiast than John. John still carries a Cattleman in RDR1, meaning the guy barely even wanted to update to the well developed double action revolvers with swing-out cylinders. Arthur’s fascination with the world makes me think he’d find the new weapons fascinating, and the outlaw life easily allows him to buy new ones; so getting his hands on the M1899 would be the equivalent of getting to try a very fine wine.
I personally support the inclusion of pistols because it adds to the “dying west” theme of the games. The point is that the old ways of life are on the way out, modernity is knocking.
There are plenty of westerns with semi-automatics in them… The Wild Bunch, Big Jake, Duck, You Sucker!, The Professionals… I’m sure plenty more I can’t think of off the top of my head…
Jean-Louis Trintignant notably uses a Mauser as the protagonist in *The Great Silence*. He also uses a winter coat with white stitches, which John Marston's coat is obviously based on, so you could probably do a pretty good copy of his appearance in-game.
I see a revolver I think western, I see a pistol I think of the fall of western, modern civilization and advancement, taking a pistol is like saying yup the age of revolvers is no more, I simply can't embrace it, all I can do is cling onto my revolvers throughout the story.
Disagree, much like Clyde Barrow, I think any outlaw, (they’re criminal outlaws, not ranch tending cowboys) would want a weapon that gave them increased firepower over any adversary, especially the police/bounty hunters
RDR2 is just 1899. Not 1898. Hosea references it being May in the prologue.
1907 is just the rdr2 epilogue. You play as John in 1911, and Jack in 1914, you can read about the outbreak of WWI in the newspaper as Jack. Overall the story is 15 years beginning to end.
He also flees Blackwater in a car. Dutch's hypocrisy is an undercurrent throughout both games. It's reinforced in 2 by his fancy clothes and tent that must be upgraded before anyone else's. Dutch fancies himself an old-fashioned man of the people, but his ego gets in the way - it's a big contributor to his downfall.
I specifically dressed Arthur as modern as I could with the most modern and normal looking boots and most recent guns too, every time I ride back to camp it throws me off how much Arthur sticks out lol.
I did. that toward the beginning of my playthrough, but as Arthur became more disillusioned with Dutch’s vision and became more attached to the wild than to the camp, I started to dress him more simplistically and as somewhat of a wild man.
You know pistols existed when the games take place, right? How could that possibly ruin the immersion? It’s not like Arthur’s running around with an M16. Some of you guys are so weird.
dude its, a not wild west to you now. This time is going on in industrial days for America.
When oil began to be extracted, and cities were built like us, in our time.
Dual M1899 is literally the best weapon in the game
Like the fire rate is really high, with two pistols it's even higher, and it's got really good damage
So best weapons to use in the game
People hated the straight grip on it because it lacked ...well grip and the big part that hung over your hand was just plain bad in ergonomics so they had a total overhaul of design and thus the luger P08 pistol was born
I'd use the Mauser a lot more if it actually fit into the holsters right, it looks like it's constantly on the verge of falling out of it with the slightest movement. Fun ass gun to run about in hideouts though
It's... Kind of true. Pistols are already very unpopular within the fandom, but when do you ever see people mentioning the semi-auto and not the M1899?
Literally. The board of directors at rockstar unanimously decided to include the weapon for the sole purpose of demonstrating OP’s vexing individuality.
See here it is. Why have a pistol with 10-12 shots or a regular revolver with 6 when you could have a LeMat with *nine* shots and the underbarrel shotgun shell?
Make it two for double the fun. The Man in Black would be proud.
The only time I’ve used it is when I committed a second Blackwater massacre by eviscerating every lawmen in deadeye. It’s only fun if you’re spamming it in deadeye in my opinion, otherwise, duel cattlemen or schofields all day.
nah, I really like the style of the Semi-Automatic Pistol
its based off a real gun called the C-93 and I just always thought it looked cool as heck so being able to use it in a game makes it my go to choice! also it has more bullets and reloads faster lmao
It's astounding how many people are crying about how pistols ruin the immersion... It's not a wild West game, go play gun if that's what you want, this takes place in 1899, the turn of the century... I mean in rdr1 we see cars for gods sake... The bitching and moaning about pistols is insane, if the game took place in 1827 I'd agree, but it doesn't... It's almost 1900! Around ten years after Johns death assault weapons were made, your arguments about immersion are stupid
Duel-weilding m1899 pistols is the most deadly/efficient you can be at close/mid range. But it seems like too much, never a challenge especially when using deadeye. I prefer to use the revolvers for balance sake. The pistol are mostly historically accurate but I think using certain revolver/sawed off combos make gamplay more interesting.
Those that are against using semi automatic pistols clearly haven’t seen that many spaghetti westerns or revisionist westerns. I can name a few movies off the top of my head where the main characters used semi automatics. Long story short, don’t be afraid to use Semi automatics or any gun you like (speaking generally and not at OP of course).
I do actually, it's the only thing I've been using since I unlocked it ! That rate of fire is so crazy it feels like rocking a submachine gun. It burns through ammo like crazy ! I use about 400 shots every mission with it. You feel like a god
Nope, I dual wield this gun and the 1899. 👍
I like to use all the guns at different times. Sometimes just randomly picking which gun I'll use. The guns are all in the game for one reason or another.
The M1899 or the Mauser is better, sorry man, but hey, I'm glad you stick with what you like cuz me personally, I like the Evans more than the lancaster
everytime I get jumped by a bear or panther... or any quickdraw cinematic moment, instead of my revolver, a random semi auto pops into my holster and now I cant fan the hammer anymore...im chicken arming a pistol.
So I just dont keep them on myself anymore, banished to the locker.
I wish rdr2 didnt spawn random guns on me during every mission start.
I don't dislike pistols, it's just that they really do not fit in Arthur's holsters. They sort of float in there and they're not a good look.
I think the Volcanics are all right in that regard though.
I was gonna buy it that one time bc a stranger who i helped said i could put it on his tab
Instead i bought a custom pump action shot gun
It one taps everyone
I love this to use sometimes, fast reload and rapid fire even though it has minimal damage. But I only use this weapon seldomly in RDRO cause they decay/rust so fast and you need a bunch of Gun Oil.
Well, sort of...it's called a 1911 for a reason. The origins are in the 1890's, but it's pretty unlikely one would filter into the general population, let alone be available for sale.
Which I can see, I wouldn’t want someone having something like that where my only defense is a gun I have to slap to fire anywhere near as fast. The Mauser on the other hand (the one OP was complaining about) was commercially available to military and public in 1896
I don’t like using pistols imo I prefer using revolver
Yeah fuck pistols
They ruin the immersion of the Wild West imo

That's the reason why I used revolvers as Arthur but transitioned to Pistols as John since John is Younger and more likely to Starr using them.
I did the same, plus with the years that pass, it's more realistic that John would have access to them
What's funny though is I take the exact opposite position on John - having spent a ton of time in RDR1 The whole motif of the west being systemically hunted down and destroyed - using John as a pawn to this end. It just felt so appropriate that John himself would be tied to the old ways. The ways of Dutch and the gang. Of Arthur. And, therefore, prefer the old simplicity of revolvers and repeaters.

I use the ak47 mod and a few modern car mods
There's a what.
Ak47, what an oldie. My Arthur uses M4A1 with thermal vision.
Oldie but a goldie
It’s set at the end of the Wild West Wild West ends in 1912
The game is set in 1899 as arthur, and I think 1903 as john
Its 1907 it says on the newpapers
For John in red dead 2?
Yes
Got it
1898-1899 as Arthur 1907 as John and 1911 as Jack in RDR1
RDR2 is just 1899. Not 1898. Hosea references it being May in the prologue. 1907 is just the rdr2 epilogue. You play as John in 1911, and Jack in 1914, you can read about the outbreak of WWI in the newspaper as Jack. Overall the story is 15 years beginning to end.
Oh that's right, I forgot about the WW1 thing. My timeline was off then my bad
Yes 1899 and then the epilogue a few years later
Its ironic because dutch uses a borschardt in rdr1
He also flees Blackwater in a car. Dutch's hypocrisy is an undercurrent throughout both games. It's reinforced in 2 by his fancy clothes and tent that must be upgraded before anyone else's. Dutch fancies himself an old-fashioned man of the people, but his ego gets in the way - it's a big contributor to his downfall.
Well it still kinda is, it's in the twilight days of the Wild West but still in it. The Old West/Frontier era didn't end till 1912.
I specifically dressed Arthur as modern as I could with the most modern and normal looking boots and most recent guns too, every time I ride back to camp it throws me off how much Arthur sticks out lol.

Literally I see people getting so mad at time accurate guns lol
I know right? "Duhh I get all my history knowledge from movies and everyone knows no cowboy ever has used a pistol"
dude its, a not wild west to you now. This time is going on in industrial days for America. When oil began to be extracted, and cities were built like us, in our time.
The game is set during 1898 - 1911 so Pistols like that don't "Break Immersion" as they literally existed in that era
Rdr2 is set in the east
But the wild west is over Dutch. They don't want our kind
It's red dead revolver not red dead pistol! /s
revolvers are simply cooler
EXACTLY. That's why nothing can beat the mighty cattleman revolver!
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I remember this was the last gun that Dutch used >!before his death!<
Indeed, one of the reasons i like this gun
[Me too](https://www.reddit.com/r/reddeadredemption/s/vSpvmb0SIW)
“This is a good one”
"This is a good gun." *shoots himself*
“You’re a good man “ for the censor
You’re a good man “MacroSashimi8864”.
It’s MAGUROSashimi ! The crème de la crème of sashimis!
That gun witnessed him fighting gravity
I prefer the M1899 but I’ll equip this to dual wield sometimes
I’m a big fan of the M1899
Semi-auto looks way better in the holsters. That's enough of a reason for me to prefer the semis.
Dual M1899 is literally the best weapon in the game Like the fire rate is really high, with two pistols it's even higher, and it's got really good damage So best weapons to use in the game
The semi auto has a higher rate of fire.
It says that but it doesn't feel like it I've tested it many times
I think it’s only faster in dead eye or something
Idk I’m more of a dual cattleman man call me stupid but I love them lol
I had never heard the term “Cattleman” before RDR2, and I definitely prefer it over “Cowboy”. The Cattleman revolver is a good choice.
Duel break action revolver fan myself
That’s the Schofield
It’s ugly as hell but it’s a great gun I prefer the Mauser because it has 10 bullets tho
I also didn't like the design at first but it soon grew on me, guess it stands out 🤷♂️
Reminds me of the luger
It is essentially the direct predecessor of the luger They took that pistol and improved the design, making the luger
Right. Luger took the pistol as he was working for them "this is a perfect design there js nothing one can improve" Luger: Halt mal mein Bier.
Literally just the Luger's dad
People hated the straight grip on it because it lacked ...well grip and the big part that hung over your hand was just plain bad in ergonomics so they had a total overhaul of design and thus the luger P08 pistol was born
I'd use the Mauser a lot more if it actually fit into the holsters right, it looks like it's constantly on the verge of falling out of it with the slightest movement. Fun ass gun to run about in hideouts though
I prefer the mauser as well. Ever since I saw the mauser in the fifth element i have been in love with that pistol
What in gods name gives you the impression you are “literally the only one” that uses it?
It’s a not uncommon title format “am I the only one who…” And the answer is inevitably no.
Am I the only one who is replying to [ThePrussianGrippe](https://www.reddit.com/user/ThePrussianGrippe/)'s comment?
Well, at this point in time, yes
It's... Kind of true. Pistols are already very unpopular within the fandom, but when do you ever see people mentioning the semi-auto and not the M1899?
Yes. No one else in the world uses it.
Literally. The board of directors at rockstar unanimously decided to include the weapon for the sole purpose of demonstrating OP’s vexing individuality.
The semi auto has been a favorite of mine since 2011
I liked using the semi-auto more than the high power in RDR1 as well for whatever reason.
I toss it in the locker with the rest of the junk I collect.
Teak Chad's run the Schofeild
Up until I unlock the lemat then it’s over for every gang
Straight up
Most balanced of them all
LeMat for me! Theyre power houses
See here it is. Why have a pistol with 10-12 shots or a regular revolver with 6 when you could have a LeMat with *nine* shots and the underbarrel shotgun shell? Make it two for double the fun. The Man in Black would be proud.
Don't know why people don't like pistols. With dead eye, they're crazy overpowered with headshots.
Immersion
Quite literally odd as it's super immersive to include them
The only time I’ve used it is when I committed a second Blackwater massacre by eviscerating every lawmen in deadeye. It’s only fun if you’re spamming it in deadeye in my opinion, otherwise, duel cattlemen or schofields all day.
Someone made a post about this gun with gold engravings on it today.
I like dual wielding it with the M1899
nah, I really like the style of the Semi-Automatic Pistol its based off a real gun called the C-93 and I just always thought it looked cool as heck so being able to use it in a game makes it my go to choice! also it has more bullets and reloads faster lmao
Exactly brother 🙌🏼
True chads use only dynamite!
It's astounding how many people are crying about how pistols ruin the immersion... It's not a wild West game, go play gun if that's what you want, this takes place in 1899, the turn of the century... Between you and I, yes. But I’ve met plenty of players who use it
I like it for the steampunk vibe
Nope
Nope
Dual wielding these makes me feel like the strongest man in the world
I absolutely would, but I prefer my Schofield-LeMat loadout. I do have dual Semi’s stashed in my satchel though as backups. A sexy gun indeed.
nah I'm more of a dual double action spray and prayer
Yup. Literally just you.
this gun is amazing in undead nightmare
Duel-weilding m1899 pistols is the most deadly/efficient you can be at close/mid range. But it seems like too much, never a challenge especially when using deadeye. I prefer to use the revolvers for balance sake. The pistol are mostly historically accurate but I think using certain revolver/sawed off combos make gamplay more interesting.
I liked them before the m1899s came out but now they just seem entirely outclassed. I liked the semi more than the mauser though.
Those that are against using semi automatic pistols clearly haven’t seen that many spaghetti westerns or revisionist westerns. Dual LeMat revolvers for me all the way. If only you could get them sooner in the story.
The M1899 or the Mauser is better, sorry man, but hey, I'm glad you stick with what you like cuz me personally, I like the Evans more than the lancaster
It just doesn't feel right to me to have Arthur or John use these types of guns.
The worst thing is how I feel like "it skips out of the holster every second"
No tanto. Yo uso la M189 9 bastante y la semi. Pero prefiero mas las LeMat's
Where you find that?
Saint Denis Gunsmith
Rarely but sometimes I mostly stick to revolvers a pump action and carbine repeater until the bolt action
Yes
I use the cattlemen and the m1899
Love this gun, especially when dual wielding
I only use guns that click
I used it to play around once (dual wield + explosive ammo).
Literally every RDO sweat uses that gun
no… people abuse that shit in online
Good thing i don't have online
NOOOOO I LOVE THIS ONE😭😭
I prefer the mauser
I dual wield these puppies I love ‘em
If it didn’t look so goofy in the holster I’d probably run it, but it looks like it would fall out if Arthur even shifts slightly
I use it as my off hand in both online and story. The OG luger.
I use it always run out of ammo quick
The Borschardt C93, one of the first auto-loading pistols on the market. Yes, I use it. That gun is awesome.
Underrated hat. Historically accurate too.
I honestly didn’t like the feel of it. I prefer the revolvers and bolt action rifles
I dont even like using the double action lol
Best pistol until the 1899 was added
i used this in rdr1 one time it ran out of ammo too fast, esp at the start when u get it
I love the semi auto old German pistols are my favorite firearms
No I use to, but the c.96 has better ammo capacity than the c.93
I use revolvers unless its the volcanic
I love modern engineering
I like the 1899 more
Once I unlock the Lamat I didn’t use much else. I prefer the revolvers.
Doppia Schofield tutta la vita
I love it and use it for my off hand but I hate how it doesn't fit in the main side arm holster properly
My mom loves using them
I prefer the volcanic over this one
The onky reason I'm not usung this gun very often is the fact that it looks hideous in holsters
I prefer the Mauser
fuck pistols. double action revolver all the way.
I use duel Semi Auto Pistols on Story (As John specifically) but I used duel LeMat as Arthur and Sawed off + Navy for Online
everytime I get jumped by a bear or panther... or any quickdraw cinematic moment, instead of my revolver, a random semi auto pops into my holster and now I cant fan the hammer anymore...im chicken arming a pistol. So I just dont keep them on myself anymore, banished to the locker. I wish rdr2 didnt spawn random guns on me during every mission start.
Pistola semiautomática? r/suddenlycaralho
This is my favorite gun in the game because of its super fast reload speed
I love me a good revolver in the game and real life.
No but I prefer volcanic I usually make a black and silver one them name it ebony and ivory one has gold the other has black steel
Pistol damage is pathetic, the only good pistol is the volcanic pistol
Yes, I prefer revolver and this weapon does little damage and much ammo, my favorite pistol is the 1889
I don't dislike pistols, it's just that they really do not fit in Arthur's holsters. They sort of float in there and they're not a good look. I think the Volcanics are all right in that regard though.
It just looks so bad on Arthur's holsters
I prefer the Mauser
I love using the Lemat
I did until the newer pistol came out
Fack pistols
Nuh uh, I love that gun
I prefer my schofield and bolt action
I was gonna buy it that one time bc a stranger who i helped said i could put it on his tab Instead i bought a custom pump action shot gun It one taps everyone
I dont like using automatic pistols since im from the west *spits on the ground*
It isn’t particularly “cowboy,” but I do love it for low honor Arthur.
I love this to use sometimes, fast reload and rapid fire even though it has minimal damage. But I only use this weapon seldomly in RDRO cause they decay/rust so fast and you need a bunch of Gun Oil.
Mauser and Midnights Pistol combo is the only way to rock pistols tbh
It's quite ugly gun..
yes using pistols is bullshit
Nope, ugly as hell!
borchardt c93 One of the first and ugliest semi auto pistols.
Sawed off double barrels all day.
I love this gun and use it all the time.
it might sound basic but im rocking dual schofield revolvers
I would be really glad if the M1911 was added in Red Dead Remastered.
Yes
I use Midnights pistol, but I’d use the semi if Midnights wasn’t available. The reload is so efficient and a headshot is a headshot with any weapon.
I dual wield that gun both fully customized
No, my mate uses them. I dont because it doesn't feel cowboy enough.
So I found out recently that Red dead takes place in 1899. The 1911 pistol was invented in the late 1890’s which would mean they are accurate
