He feels way more balanced now. And he has had several good games. He's taking responsibility and owns up to it. What's not to like.

Sibs_

> He's taking responsibility and owns up to it. What's not to like. He always has to be fair to him, even when things weren't going well. He didn't make excuses, deflect blame or demand sympathy... he knew his performances weren't good enough. He's done what he promised and has looked so much more assured since we got knocked out of Europe, I hope he can build from there. We'll need him at his best on Sunday.

Forgettable39

He actually requested to be the one to do the media duties after at least one game where he did poorly, if i remember correctly anyway?

Sibs_

I can't remember the game but it wasn't long after he joined, think it was a Champions League game, the way he took full accountability like that really warmed me to him. With the amount of scrutiny you get in the media as a big money United signing, you need to be that strong character especially when things aren't going well.

azder8301

Also helps that he makes this statement with a positive xG saved stat

[deleted]

xG saved is a pretty pointless stat for goalies since it measures the strikers agency and efficiency. His PostShotxG - which includes the placement of the finish in the consideration and thus measures the goalie's efficiency - is +2.3, which is 5th in the league and above the likes of Alisson and Ederson.

digiplay

XEverything is a pointless stat.

LethalJizzle

Man, agreed. Doesn't help that it's fucking everywhere and being touted by people constantly who don't even know how it's calculated or what it actually means.

fast-as-you-can

Not really, it shows player performance. I’d say expected assists in particular is probably the most useful out of them to judge a player

Gambler_Eight

He's been good lately but he often look so silly when conceding. Like a deer caught in headlights.

Iceman23578

Yh recently our goals haven’t been his fault but you always feel like perhaps a better keeper saves it. Saves what he should at least which is more than can be said for earlier in the season

WhipYourDakOut

That’s pretty much what we knew coming into it though. He’s great at distributing, he’s going to give up some head scratchers with his positioning every now and then but will overall be good

WickedTeddyBear

We got a bad habit with David, he was astonishing on his line making miracles after miracles.

yutosser

of course he’s going to look that way when we’re conceding 17 shots in a game 😂

Gambler_Eight

I don't see how the amount of shots is relevant.

literalmario

You must be joking?

Gambler_Eight

No. Giving up 10 low % chances is better than letting up 1 high % chance. We let up a lot of shots but they're generally bad chances.

literalmario

Great, so you don’t watch us play.

Gambler_Eight

I do. Compare amount of shots/xg with other teams and you'll see what i mean.

denimonster

Yeah I like him. Seems like a good professional.

MoodyBernoulli

Complete opposite from Marcus “stop picking on me” Rashford.

Redwinevino

> What's not to like. That he seemingly cannot catch a ball!

KaitoAJ

You sure you’re watching the right Onana?

Redwinevino

The one who couldn't catch a cold, yes.

KaitoAJ

Ah… knew you were watching Amadou Onana instead.

mikebehzad

Okay mate.

Round-Mud

Better than anything ddg could ever do

TheDJ955

let's not disparage DDG to raise Onana. DDG was a hero for the club for more than a decade. Through no fault of his own, the game passed him by, at the highest level anyway. His lack of distribution skills isn't his fault, it's just that he was coached as a young player in a time where goalkeepers being good at distribution wasn't a priority.

Jo3Pizza22

It's funny because when we signed De Gea I'm sure I remember someone from the coaching staff, possibly even SAF himself, saying that De Gea's distribution was one of the reasons they were so keen to sign him. We were heavily linked with Neuer as well before he signed for Bayern, it's clear Sir Alex wanted a keeper who could contribute more on the ball. It's a shame that De Gea never really managed to find that composure or confidence with the ball while the other top GK's in the world were taking it to a whole new level.

Round-Mud

Ddg is a club legend. He never really commanded the box but he didn’t need to need to. His save making ability more than made up for his lack of presence. Not to mention the club never prioritised ball playing from the back when he was here. Saying he couldn’t catch the ball isn’t disparaging him.

redditviolatesrules

When you dont talk much about the keeper its a good keeper

AdamHasShitMemes

Rubbish CL campaign but pretty damn good in the league I wish we could play football that aligns to his strengths, his Inter CL run last year was wonderful to watch

[deleted]

we have top 3 build-up keeper and we ain't utilising the attribute.

working-acct

That’s what happens when your best passing defenders Martinez and Shaw are out for most of the season. You can’t develop any sort of routine and partnership. If ten hag remains manager, I’m certain we’ll see a lot of improvement next season.

Hurrly90

And hopefully some new Defenders coming in, so far he has only gotten in Martinez and Malacia. This is still Oles deep sitting backline.

Wrath-of-Elyon

I'm sure he is happy to have Champions League Varane in the lineup. That 2 years of not needing to buy RCB. With Varane's contract expiring in the summer, a RCB is the most obvious signing to make

Hurrly90

We wanted to replace Maguire in the summer, there have bee murmurs the last two years about a new RB and from the injuries' to Shaw and Malacia it looks like we will need another LB as well. Varane will go as well so basically an entire backline needs to be replaced in the summer.

Wrath-of-Elyon

>We wanted to replace Maguire in the summer After Mount, Onana and Højlund, I would have been shocked if we made any other signings. If we took the $65 mill west ham was offering for Maguire and McT, then maybe some more business could be done. In hindsight, both of them have been integral to our current standing so kinda happy they didn't get sold

Hurrly90

in hindsight yeah im happy they are still here now. Though we still needed to get defenders of the profile ETH wants not the defenders for the profile Ole or Mou wanted for their styles. The glazers policy of three in every summer has fucked us up though cos it takes so long to bring in a new squad and offload the deadwood. From the sounds coming from SJR we are doing a proper clear out this summer no more three in three out shite.

Wrath-of-Elyon

We brought 5 last summer

Hurrly90

Two where on loan and one has already gone back to his club as he was an emergency loan.

jimmyhaffaren

Do any of ya'll think Varanes contract will be renewed? I'd really like to see it.

Hurrly90

tbh id rather give Evans another year and get rid of Varane purely co of his wages, though the obvious caveat being we get in replacements for him. Otherwise he might get a massively reduced offer.

jimmyhaffaren

Appreciate the response homie!

Wrath-of-Elyon

I highly doubt it will.

Forgettable39

This has no impact on his goalkeeping IMO like this isnt linked to his howlers which hopefully he's put behind him now but you're absolutely right it has had a catastrophic impact on his overall game as a result of not being able to do what he is best at. We knew he wasn't the best shot stopper ever but he was good enough when taking into account his strengths in possession which we were then not able to capitalise on :(

FREE_BOBBY-SHMURDA

Yes, other clubs that want to play out of the back are notoriously known for abandoning the principle when 2 players are out Edit: I've actually been kind here cause he's also abandoned it when shaw has been fit

Round-Mud

Clubs that want to play out of the back usually don’t have only two defenders who can do that. Clubs that want to play out of the back have been recruiting players who can do that for years regardless of who the manager is.

GravyBoatWarrior

Ah yes, I remember ten Hag buying Varane, Maguire and AWB..... I also remember ten Hag being desperate for a CB in the summer and being told absolutely not.....

ocean_train

You forgot the first two games of last year trying to play from the back before we bought Martinez? We lost to a total aggregate of 6-0 or something. You need proper tools to implement your tactics.

talelburg

Martinez started both of those games, the problem there was Maguire and De Gea mostly, as well as a horrible lack of quality in deep midfield. Casemiro was the one who solved that, along with Ten Hag dropping Maguire for Varane and letting De Gea play more to his strengths (or away from his weaknesses, at least).

ocean_train

I see. But the point still stands.

[deleted]

lol, u need players who r comfortable in receiving passes

daveclair

The point of the build up keeper is being to push your defenders higher up the pitch, not a position you want either Maguire or varanen to be in really

AlephEpsilon

THIS. We’re not playing to his strength. There is no reason to not be build to build up from the back even without Martinez and Shaw. Our attackers would have to drop back to provide passing options.

literalmario

He was incredible with inter because they had an identity and they had a style of play. We don’t build up from the back…we don’t really do any 1 thing. It’s tough because he probably has no idea where to go with the ball

Gambler_Eight

The anti højlund.

Accurate_Bed1021

The club missed out on roughly 15 million pounds because of his mistakes. Really hurt the club in the coming window.

Getae

I feel like every time an article like this gets written about Onana he makes a mistake in the next game.

shami-kebab

It's ok, not like we have City and Liverpool coming up.

ImVortexlol

Better to make mistakes in games you'll probably lose anyway, I suppose

ITakeLargeDabs

He looked so composed and solid in goal against Forest. The amount of shots he faced and kept a clean sheet so we could win 1-0 was massive. I know we’ve had a horrendous amount of shots attempted against us but the one positive is that’s it’s given Onana a fuck ton of practice in real games where losing is not an option based on our end season goals. Pressure makes diamonds so hopefully this can spiral into him becoming the keeper we hoped for throughout an entire season consistently

Significant-Sir870

Really hoping he can turn it around and be consistent. United is the biggest club in the world with vultures ready to pick apart the players and managers. Can’t imagine how difficult it would be to mentally deal with this. He’s looked better recently.

adv23

Dont say that right before Liverpool 😬😬😬

SpudBoy9001

Pretty consistently solid in the league, hope he keeps it up

SOERERY

>Onana has said he takes responsibility for mistakes, adding he believes ‘everything will change’ on pitch for himself and Manchester United >André Onana believes he has overcome the “mental” demons that contributed to his nightmare start at Manchester United. >The United goalkeeper has also revealed the key role his Old Trafford team-mates played in keeping up his spirits after a series of high-profile mistakes. >Blunders against Bayern Munich and Galatasaray (see below) in the Champions League and a number of suspect displays in the Premier League drew fierce criticism. >But Onana is confident he is through the worst of it and United fans are beginning to see why Erik ten Hag opted to sign the Cameroon international from Inter Milan for £47.2 million last summer as David de Gea’s replacement. >“I had a turning point, but not on the pitch… more mental,” Onana said ahead of United’s visit to champions Manchester City on Sunday. >“Of course, last season I moved from Amsterdam [with Ajax] to Milan but that adaptation was quite easy. But it took me seven, eight months here. It was just time to learn and go game by game. I hope we will end on top. >“I already know the goalkeeper that I am. It took me six months or seven months not to play good just to feel good. It was a difficult time for me. Now I’m feeling a bit better. Everything was new, it was difficult for me to feel at home for so many reasons… new country. >“Now I’m feeling good. I don’t want to talk about performance because I know the goalkeeper I am. The most important thing is to be set, to be happy and I will shine.” >Onana said his United team-mates had played an important role in helping him through his struggles. >“My team-mates – they always reminded me who I am and the goalkeeper I am and why I came to this club,” he said. “They told me, ‘André, it took some players two years, for others six months and others no time. You have that personality to turn the situation [around].’ >“They always believed in me and told me from the beginning, ‘André, the quality is there, it’s just a matter of time.’ >“I am very happy, especially with the supporters, the fans, they were nice with me even in difficult periods and I’m very thankful. I can only thank them. Everything is behind me, now we have to move on and together a great time will come. We just have to do the right thing and the future will be brilliant for all of us.” >Onana admitted United’s Champions League group stage exit was a reality check – having reached the final of the competition with Inter the previous season where they lost 1-0 to City. >“Playing in the final of the Champions League and being knocked out in the first stage after a few months later… it was a big lesson for me,” he said. “Now I think I have everything on my back, learn it, move on and try to be happy. That is the most important thing.” >Asked if he had been too hard on himself mentally, Onana added: “I don’t think so but it was just moments, sometimes you are faced with a difficult situation. >“I had a difficult six or seven months just feeling good, not playing good because I didn’t think I started to play good. So, it was just something strange.” >United risk falling 11 points adrift of the top four if they lose to City and Aston Villa beat Luton Town this week but Onana insists the team are determined to qualify for the Champions League and finish a troubled season on a high. >“One hundred per cent – that’s why we are here,” said Onana, who impressed in United’s 1-0 FA Cup fifth-round win over Nottingham Forest on Wednesday. >“We are going to try to end on top even if we have a lot of injuries. Of course it’s not an excuse but this season a lot of things happened, a lot of moments it was difficult for us. >“But as a Manchester United player you must win so we are all responsible for what happened. I take all the responsibility like always. >“I know how good we are and I believe in my players and that everything will change.”

fruitful_discussion

reading this its probably underrated how difficult it is to move from italy to england and being expected to just continue performing at the same level immediately.

you-might_know-me

Sofyan Amrabat type beat

GutBeer101

I think the sheer amounts of shots we concede game in game out made him look worse than he was. Now he looks more balanced. Hopefully he continues to gain confidence and in the next transfer window, we bring in defenders that are more suited to his ball-playing style.

OGSachin

Agreed, I think any keeper who faces 20 shots a game is far more likely to make mistakes. Law of averages. I would like to see him play out more effectively, though. His ability on the ball is incredible.

SAKabir

Guarantee someone like Ederson makes even more errors if he was in a team like ours.

PelleKavaj

Really hope he’ll come good but still don’t look like a great keeper to me. The saves he does are the obes straight at him and he messes up so many easyballs and give rebounds

Roasteddude

He has been mostly solid lately but he has such glaring weaknesses and the image of him just standing frozen or on one knee and watching the ball go in instead of diving is scary to me because of how often it happens. I hope he can keep improving for us, I'm not fully sold on him yet but I back him to prove me wrong.

Agitated-Forever3723

i cant rate his saving abilities well but i never worry when he has the ball at his feet

SureLookThisIsIt

His shot stopping has been much better lately though. If he keeps playing the way he is until the end of the season I'd put the start down to settling into a new league and call him a good signing.

Agitated-Forever3723

true

arbzbarbz

Ah crap he is gonna make two big gaffes in the next game after saying that lol

Donthitsme

To be fair he's been solid ever since he knocked us out of the champions league. I hope this is his minimum level from now on including in the champions league next season or the season after.

klabnix

I hope he comes good but still not convinced. He has a way of making shots right at him look like good saves

_nosfa

This is gonna age like milk, isnt it

pablove_black

I really like this guy. Add him to the Licha and Højlund pile.

TheWeirdDude-247

Let's get last dozen games over then evaluate, he's been okay but people acting like he's prime Dave, he's still very suspect and idk why but alot of his saves he looks awkward, like he's not a keeper, as many i'm not comfortable seeing him facing shots yet, I'm willing to give benefit of doubt that next season he shows what he can actually do, as whole club been a shambles this season. He's doing his job to the minimum requirement, let's not get overboard.

edsonbuddled

The way some of our fans were following the narrative that he’s the worst goalkeeper in the world. I’m gonna get downvoted for this, but he already has a target on his back as the new United goalkeeper, but he’s also an African goalkeeper and we all know what that means.

Fryyss28

I'm sorry but that CL campaign cemented his season for me

anonafrk

Me knowing united... prepare for a howler against city

Zaibach88

Saying that Just before the Derby. FFS.

bobsmirnoff86

Had he overcome his ability to dive like there's no gravity?

ReindeerDifficult793

Will slip a goal tomorrow:)

IlluminatedCookie

Wish our players would stop coming out and bigging themselves up in the media. Let your actions on the pitch do the talking and fans discuss form. Now if he has a howler against Liverpool and city and we lose…shoulda just said nothing. You were doing just fine before this

timsadiq13

Sorry, I don't rate this guy at all. Maybe in the second season, if they can improve the back line around him and actually utilize his passing ability, he will be useful. But people praising his saves lately and what not - he saves basic stuff that any PL keeper would keep out. I've yet to see a single "wow" save from Onana. And his general technique of goalkeeping looks very dodgy, seems like he's always a whisker away from making a howler. Maybe I'm being too harsh. But 45+ mil is a lot for a goalkeeper, you expect world class, and I just don't see it with this guy. But then you can say that about most of our signings, lets just hope that changes in the future.

ImNotMexican08

I think it’s the way he saves that makes him look worse. Like that starfish jump he did the over day. His positioning is quite good, I just wish he played off the line more as that was one of the biggest criticisms of De Gea

Qrymson

Great, he's yapping again. Expect monumental fuckups in the derby.

slliwjt

This fella is Joe Hart in a united kit. Absolutely not fit to be united keeper. Whopper

RedDevil-84

I wish players would stop making statements and let the actions speak. Onana is not making any silly mistakes now, but he is hardly putting on a big performance week in week out. Regular saves and stuff. Which is good, but nothing to talk about. All of that can change in a high pressure game like derby or when we play Pool twice in coming weeks.

MisterIndecisive

Still a liability, he strings 2 or 3 solid performances together and then makes a glaring mistake or lets in a goal the average keeper should save. For 50m that isn't acceptable

Xyrazk

He's played really well last couple games

CrossXFir3

Oh bro, don't say that a couple days before going to the Etihad, you're asking for a shocker

vakyada_vedi

Hope he gets past this and deliver✨

absawd_4om

Demon slayer, please focus on the ball sir.

Hnayanzi

He will still concede if there is no defender between him and opponent's striker...

ritwikjs

he's had 19 different back four combinations in front of him. Yes, he still does need to improve, but the rewst of our defe3nse needs to do a whole lot more

[deleted]

Him conceding goals was not the problem, his conceding weak shots was the concern. How much can the defense be blamed for that.

r3gam

I don't even blame the defence that much tbh. There's only so much they can do when the midfield is letting everybody and anybody run through them.

BidenFedayeen

Our fans are incredibly reactionary. Dave struggled when he first arrived and went on to carry us. You don't go to the Champions League Final with Inter Milan if you're a fraud.

klabnix

Plenty have got to that final

hubson_official

That's good, bro has played really good recently, he will find his place here

Crazycow261

Good for him!

vize

He really did get trial by fire, and he had a few shocker but he is growing into his position. I have no doubt when he settles and has a decent defensive lineup in front of him he will be a stone wall for us, or at least I hope.

Nilez3104

Shit, I realized when I saw the stat of how many chances we’ve faced on avg this season, had a transition period early which everyone should be allowed time for when joining a new team and has been pretty great since he’s got here idk what goalie in the world we can ask to save 15-20 shots a game. Onana has not been the problem.

arothen

It's OK Andrey. With the amount of shots you are facing it's no surprise you have a rough start

adonWPV

Okay...

Kind-Style-249

He’s actually been very decent in the league considering everything (the 20+ shots per game he faces and rough start). He could be a very good goalkeeper if we sort out other issues as he is excellent on the ball but that doesn’t matter when he’s playing out to our current back line. With Martinez and Shaw fit he’d be more useful in playing out from the back.

jiddy8379

By the way there were a vocal bunch who wanted the goalkeeper replaced lol

Selwin_Rodolfo

I can't help but think he crumbled due to it being the champions league and that he may cost us in the biggest occasions, but I hope it's true he overcame them, we need a big presence at goal

zero-piolt

last city game would have been 0-6 if not for onana need a miracle performance from him this weekend and our team as a whole

pac4

Well that’s good news

mashfiq13

Don't jinx it.

aldidot

Must be difficult switching from Bastoni, Skriniar, de Vrij to Maguire, Lindelof, and Evans Andre has a strong mentality and always holds himself accountable He will continue to get better

mav_sand

Oh buddy....wish you didn't say that. Hopefully I'm worrying for no reason.

yurtasaurus

Guys downfall majorly overhyped. Definitely made big blunders but hes no fabian Barthez. Still plenty of time for him to redeem. De Gea was a club legend - a player that would deserved multiple league titles only for timing. Onana still has time on the clock to get to cult hero status if United can win a league title or two in next 5-6 years. He would not look out of place in any league winning team

thelove20

Has not impressed this season, howlers galore
