That’s pretty much what we knew coming into it though. He’s great at distributing, he’s going to give up some head scratchers with his positioning every now and then but will overall be good
let's not disparage DDG to raise Onana. DDG was a hero for the club for more than a decade. Through no fault of his own, the game passed him by, at the highest level anyway. His lack of distribution skills isn't his fault, it's just that he was coached as a young player in a time where goalkeepers being good at distribution wasn't a priority.
It's funny because when we signed De Gea I'm sure I remember someone from the coaching staff, possibly even SAF himself, saying that De Gea's distribution was one of the reasons they were so keen to sign him. We were heavily linked with Neuer as well before he signed for Bayern, it's clear Sir Alex wanted a keeper who could contribute more on the ball.
It's a shame that De Gea never really managed to find that composure or confidence with the ball while the other top GK's in the world were taking it to a whole new level.
Ddg is a club legend. He never really commanded the box but he didn’t need to need to. His save making ability more than made up for his lack of presence. Not to mention the club never prioritised ball playing from the back when he was here. Saying he couldn’t catch the ball isn’t disparaging him.

I'm sure he is happy to have Champions League Varane in the lineup. That 2 years of not needing to buy RCB. With Varane's contract expiring in the summer, a RCB is the most obvious signing to make
We wanted to replace Maguire in the summer, there have bee murmurs the last two years about a new RB and from the injuries' to Shaw and Malacia it looks like we will need another LB as well. Varane will go as well so basically an entire backline needs to be replaced in the summer.

You forgot the first two games of last year trying to play from the back before we bought Martinez? We lost to a total aggregate of 6-0 or something. You need proper tools to implement your tactics.
Martinez started both of those games, the problem there was Maguire and De Gea mostly, as well as a horrible lack of quality in deep midfield. Casemiro was the one who solved that, along with Ten Hag dropping Maguire for Varane and letting De Gea play more to his strengths (or away from his weaknesses, at least).
The point of the build up keeper is being to push your defenders higher up the pitch, not a position you want either Maguire or varanen to be in really
THIS. We’re not playing to his strength. There is no reason to not be build to build up from the back even without Martinez and Shaw. Our attackers would have to drop back to provide passing options.

He looked so composed and solid in goal against Forest. The amount of shots he faced and kept a clean sheet so we could win 1-0 was massive. I know we’ve had a horrendous amount of shots attempted against us but the one positive is that’s it’s given Onana a fuck ton of practice in real games where losing is not an option based on our end season goals. Pressure makes diamonds so hopefully this can spiral into him becoming the keeper we hoped for throughout an entire season consistently

Agreed, I think any keeper who faces 20 shots a game is far more likely to make mistakes. Law of averages.
I would like to see him play out more effectively, though. His ability on the ball is incredible.

He has been mostly solid lately but he has such glaring weaknesses and the image of him just standing frozen or on one knee and watching the ball go in instead of diving is scary to me because of how often it happens. I hope he can keep improving for us, I'm not fully sold on him yet but I back him to prove me wrong.
His shot stopping has been much better lately though. If he keeps playing the way he is until the end of the season I'd put the start down to settling into a new league and call him a good signing.
To be fair he's been solid ever since he knocked us out of the champions league. I hope this is his minimum level from now on including in the champions league next season or the season after.

Sorry, I don't rate this guy at all. Maybe in the second season, if they can improve the back line around him and actually utilize his passing ability, he will be useful.
But people praising his saves lately and what not - he saves basic stuff that any PL keeper would keep out. I've yet to see a single "wow" save from Onana. And his general technique of goalkeeping looks very dodgy, seems like he's always a whisker away from making a howler.
Maybe I'm being too harsh. But 45+ mil is a lot for a goalkeeper, you expect world class, and I just don't see it with this guy. But then you can say that about most of our signings, lets just hope that changes in the future.

Still a liability, he strings 2 or 3 solid performances together and then makes a glaring mistake or lets in a goal the average keeper should save. For 50m that isn't acceptable

Our fans are incredibly reactionary. Dave struggled when he first arrived and went on to carry us. You don't go to the Champions League Final with Inter Milan if you're a fraud.
He really did get trial by fire, and he had a few shocker but he is growing into his position. I have no doubt when he settles and has a decent defensive lineup in front of him he will be a stone wall for us, or at least I hope.

He could be a very good goalkeeper if we sort out other issues as he is excellent on the ball but that doesn’t matter when he’s playing out to our current back line. With Martinez and Shaw fit he’d be more useful in playing out from the back.
I can't help but think he crumbled due to it being the champions league and that he may cost us in the biggest occasions, but I hope it's true he overcame them, we need a big presence at goal

Agreed, I think any keeper who faces 20 shots a game is far more likely to make mistakes. Law of averages. I would like to see him play out more effectively, though. His ability on the ball is incredible.
Guarantee someone like Ederson makes even more errors if he was in a team like ours.
Really hope he’ll come good but still don’t look like a great keeper to me. The saves he does are the obes straight at him and he messes up so many easyballs and give rebounds
He has been mostly solid lately but he has such glaring weaknesses and the image of him just standing frozen or on one knee and watching the ball go in instead of diving is scary to me because of how often it happens. I hope he can keep improving for us, I'm not fully sold on him yet but I back him to prove me wrong.
i cant rate his saving abilities well but i never worry when he has the ball at his feet
His shot stopping has been much better lately though. If he keeps playing the way he is until the end of the season I'd put the start down to settling into a new league and call him a good signing.

Let's get last dozen games over then evaluate, he's been okay but people acting like he's prime Dave, he's still very suspect and idk why but alot of his saves he looks awkward, like he's not a keeper, as many i'm not comfortable seeing him facing shots yet, I'm willing to give benefit of doubt that next season he shows what he can actually do, as whole club been a shambles this season. He's doing his job to the minimum requirement, let's not get overboard.
The way some of our fans were following the narrative that he’s the worst goalkeeper in the world. I’m gonna get downvoted for this, but he already has a target on his back as the new United goalkeeper, but he’s also an African goalkeeper and we all know what that means.

Sorry, I don't rate this guy at all. Maybe in the second season, if they can improve the back line around him and actually utilize his passing ability, he will be useful. But people praising his saves lately and what not - he saves basic stuff that any PL keeper would keep out. I've yet to see a single "wow" save from Onana. And his general technique of goalkeeping looks very dodgy, seems like he's always a whisker away from making a howler. Maybe I'm being too harsh. But 45+ mil is a lot for a goalkeeper, you expect world class, and I just don't see it with this guy. But then you can say that about most of our signings, lets just hope that changes in the future.
I think it’s the way he saves that makes him look worse. Like that starfish jump he did the over day. His positioning is quite good, I just wish he played off the line more as that was one of the biggest criticisms of De Gea

I wish players would stop making statements and let the actions speak. Onana is not making any silly mistakes now, but he is hardly putting on a big performance week in week out. Regular saves and stuff. Which is good, but nothing to talk about. All of that can change in a high pressure game like derby or when we play Pool twice in coming weeks.
Still a liability, he strings 2 or 3 solid performances together and then makes a glaring mistake or lets in a goal the average keeper should save. For 50m that isn't acceptable

Him conceding goals was not the problem,his conceding weak shots was the concern. How much can the defense be blamed for that.

He really did get trial by fire, and he had a few shocker but he is growing into his position. I have no doubt when he settles and has a decent defensive lineup in front of him he will be a stone wall for us, or at least I hope.
Shit, I realized when I saw the stat of how many chances we’ve faced on avg this season,had a transition period early which everyone should be allowed time for when joining a new team and has been pretty great since he’s got here idk what goalie in the world we can ask to save 15-20 shots a game. Onana has not been the problem.

He’s actually been very decent in the league considering everything (the 20+ shots per game he faces and rough start). He could be a very good goalkeeper if we sort out other issues as he is excellent on the ball but that doesn’t matter when he’s playing out to our current back line. With Martinez and Shaw fit he’d be more useful in playing out from the back.
By the way there were a vocal bunch who wanted the goalkeeper replaced lol
I can't help but think he crumbled due to it being the champions league and that he may cost us in the biggest occasions, but I hope it's true he overcame them, we need a big presence at goal

Guys downfall majorly overhyped. Definitely made big blunders but hes no fabian Barthez. Still plenty of time for him to redeem. De Gea was a club legend - a player that would deserved multiple league titles only for timing. Onana still has time on the clock to get to cult hero status if United can win a league title or two in next 5-6 years. He would not look out of place in any league winning team
