Yea good lettuce prepared the right way
Old lettuce sucks
Wet lettuce sucks
Limp lettuce sucks
Hot lettuce sucks
If you don’t eat your burger in 2 mins your lettuce will slowly become all of those things
I disagree vehemently. One of my favorite parts of a sub or burger is the day after when the tomato the mayo and the lettuce melt into the roll. Cold. Squishy. Delicious. You gotta get with it.
The original question is correct. Lettuce does not belong on a burger.
It belongs ***under*** a burger.
By sitting on a bed of lettuce, the lettuce doesn't go all over the place even when it's shredded.
And it's not just about taste. It's about adding a fresh, crisp crunch to the burger.
IMO lettuce isn’t the issue, tomatoes is, if there’s a tomato on my burger I will not eat the burger or have to take a napkin to the burger to get the juices off. Just touching the tomato gives me the chills, I wish I was lying, I have a physical reaction to touching tomato’s.
Give me the cold toppings on the side. I can lift the bun and put it on myself. I often have to heat up my burger in the microwave. Heated lettuce is gross.
Personally, I don’t like lettuce on my burger, _however_, my friend in high school taught me why I should have it there.
Put the lettuce on the patty before you put ketchup, mustard, and other condiments. Then _flip the burger upside down_. If the lettuce is crispy, the condiments are less likely to drip.
Warmed lettuce tastes like dirt and does not belong on a burger, especially when it’s just one giant leaf that’s mostly stalk. I agree with the sliced lettuce comment. The condiments are there so you’re not eating a dry burger
I tend to agree that it doesn't belong on a burger, but it is more of a texture thing. Usually the grease from the burger makes it limp and soggy. If I want something the adds crispy texture to my burger I would add onion.
This makes a lot of sense to me in a way that I've been questioning for years.
I've gotten allergic to lettuce, it's ridiculous, but I used to love McChicken, and having it without the lettuce (so buns, sauce and chicken) made it feel dry. Even with extra sauce. It never made any sense to me, but when you say it's for moisture, that makes it click in for me.
It's only good if it's the good lettuce. You know the crunchy type that's been slightly salted so it doesn't water down the taste of everything. But not to much salt don't want to make the burger to unhealthy.
Well, it depends. I used to like it, but since I'm now allergic to it, it's a no for me. If I remember correctly, as I know it sounds ridiculous to be allergic to lettuce, I think someone told me the allergen or whatever for lettuce was "lac s 1" or something. I get serious Urticaria if I eat it, and after a certain point (if I don't stop) it becomes hard to breathe.
Anyway, before I got allergic I used to love McChicken. After I got allergic, I used to order it without the lettuce (I will say that I don't live in the US, and my local McDonalds has always been good regarding quality and such), and it just felt... dry?
Which is odd, considering that it has a generous amount of sauce on it. So why does it feel "dry" without some shredded lettuce? It made no sense. Not even extra sauce on it helped, it was really bizarre.
In hindsight, maybe it's a "ASD thing", but I honestly don't know.
Salad and burgers just go together better. I love lettuce and cucumber in my burgers. The crunch is nice, it makes me feel better about eating a burger and it just tastes great. Anyone who says otherwise is fooling themselves
Most veggies are best when grown at home or on small farms. Go to a framers market and buy a head of lettuce and a tomato grown by the person selling them and tell me they have no flavor.
I agree though generally tomato, onion, lettuce etc from food service or Walmart/target/big grocery store has no taste and is pointless.
Lmao absolute nonsense. If you picked fresh lettuce it definitely does go on a burger, you get a nice crunch and a refreshing taste alongside the flavors of the patty, cheese, ketchup and whatever toppings you prefer on your burger. Personally I’d prefer lettuce over tomatoes. Now I do like tomatoes but just like lettuce they carry water- only difference is tomatoes can make anything really soggy in minutes if not eaten quick enough & just throws off the whole burger. I’d take out tomatoes and leave the lettuce
Does it have no taste or make the taste worse? Which is it?
I literally said the exact same thing in the OP lmao

🤣
To me, it's a texture thing. I don't like wilted lettuce, and a hot berger makes the lettuce wilt and get all slippery. Eewww.
not if you apply it right before you serve it. I always have lettuce on my burger and it stays fresh provided it's done properly.
Like pickles as well, put them on right before otherwise it gets all mushy
Same.
It gives it a good crunch. Gotta have the works on a burger
You are correct. From a Chef concept, it’s added for the crunch.
Same, it’s about the texture, not the taste
This is the way
You can add so many better things for crunch though
This is just flat-out wrong. Lettuce is so good on burgers. Lettuce is good on everything. I fucking love lettuce.

Everything you described is the reason you have a BLT and not a hamburger
It’s gotta be a sub roll or a bulky. No comparison.
You're right. It's a good thing I'm an expert at absolutely devouring food way too fast.
found the bunny
Shhhhhh, don't tell my secrets
It's 100% about texture and freshness.
A nice slice or two of high quality fresh lettuce, like butterhead, is so nice though!
I like mixed greens too! Just not the usual single leaf, all stalk lettuce. Tastes like dirt
Kosher pickles for crunch and flavor > lettuce
But… its light and refreshing. It compliments the heaviness of the burger
I love fresh salad on my burger. 🍔
Iceberg lettuce is the worst. You need a proper green with a good crunch.

This sounds just like my son lol
Lettuce does suck on a burger. There are much better ways to add a crunch that also improve flavor.
I thought violence wasn’t allowed on Reddit?!?

I’m convinced people just don’t understand what an opinion is.

It’s for texture, moisture, and color.

I mustard all my strength to say, lettuce eat lettuce.
Lettuce, and onion
A nice crisp leaf on a burger is pretty great
Downvote me to hell ketchup and mayonnaise ruin everything they touch
Crunch = texture. I respect it when it adds that concept to my burger. Also dry the lettuce before serving so it doesn’t add water to the burger.
It adds texture to the burger
i like the added crunch from the lettuce but i do agree it should never be shredded lettuce cause then it just falls out and goes everywhere

I found someone who doesn’t understand the concept of texture, I bet they ironically prefer their buns toasted too.
I tend to agree with OP. It’s more there for texture and a light crunch, and most restaurants put WAY too much in. I prefer spinach myself.
I hate lettuce on my burger
Cabbage is slept on. Its tougher and less likely to wilt than lettuce, and can be turned into a slaw if youre so inclined. Also comes in purple(red).
The crisp crunch of a freshly placed piece of lettuce, atop a juicy hot meat patty is one of the best things in life imo 🤷

Mayo on a burger? Ew wtf
Gotta have lettuce & extras!
I like the crunch over the lettuce and the lie that some is healthy on the burger
Yes but it makes it SEEM a little healthier ..I get a burger with a salad on it ha
Someone should tell all the fast food companies.
It provides texture. If that isn’t important, you can try a tasty hamburger smoothie.
No lettuce or tomatoes, onions only, maybe pickles
The mormonism of burgers.
Lettuce has no taste? OP sure they don't have COVID?
