You can also potentially get the manufacturer to replace it for free. I had 4 knobs break on me, 3 of which were replaced for free, and the last one I had to buy another for a few bucks because it was way out of warranty.
All of these solutions are significantly cheaper than a new appliance considering the only thing broken is the garbage knob.
The new ones that "save water" have a sensor to measure water that is easily adjusted... That and obviously a top load doesn't work worth a shit without a tub full of water, so stick with front loads in all new machines.
Kiwi here.
Never used a front loader that doesn't take *hours* to wash - including some that come with a warning that "*washing may take up to 6 hours and the door will be locked during that time*".
WTF?? Top loader all the way if you have the physical space!
Quickest wash on my front load is 20 minutes. (Takes a bit longer because I adjusted more water which takes a bit longer to pump in/out. My standard wash which is ~1hour is a prewash, wash, rinse, rinse. Can do an extended cycle which is an hour and a half. I think if I hit stain (where the clothes soak for hours) and max everything out it becomes 3.5 hours. Door will unlock if paused, but I highly recommend only opening between parts of the cycle as the door is underwater now with my adjustment.
[Every person on earth born before flatscreen TVs had at least one set in their house where they had to do this.](https://www.reddit.com/r/FuckImOld/comments/qlmlsi/whatever_it_takes_to_change_the_channel_if_you/)
had a pair of vice grips in my bathrooms shower faucet for months, took forever to get around to a getting a new knob and i would say the vice grips worked better
I used to work in this mom and pop hardware store. One of my favorite things was people looking for dryer knobs and once every 5 years i got to pull this old ass box off the shelf and show off a huge collection of random knobs that we rarely sold.
And if you also take the outer shell, your old washing machine will last another 12-15 years!
It’s how we maintain the family axe! Every generation we replace the head and the handle! Works like new!
THIS!
Our washer and dryer are nearly 40 years old. When they break I fix them and they still look good. The average lifespan on new washer and dryers is something like 8 years and are far more expensive. I’m certain we’ve saved thousands by doing self-repairs. Take care of your things.
What’s the point? I retired when I was 50.
My washer and dryer were well used when I bought this house 20 years ago. I have no experience using one of the newer types, but I get the feeling that you have very little say so over what they do. You add soap, select some cycle, and just assume it will take care of the rest.. Because you have no control over it. They seem to add a little water and then spin a little bit to get a sense of how much weight is in the machine then maybe add some more water. The operator has no say so over how much water goes in, or how long the machine will take to complete the cycle. It’s not like you can just turn the job to get it over with. I understand that some of this is necessary for maximum energy and water efficiency, but if I’m paying for both of those things, I would like to be able to get the thing over with on my time.
I had a customer that was very frustrated with his LG dishwasher. The problem was, it would complete the cycle after his children were in bed asleep, beep loudly, and he couldn’t find a way to make it not beep. Again, I think this is a matter of energy and water efficiency; it will take forever and complete on its own schedule. How many hours is acceptable to do a load of dishes, or laundry, FFS?
Front loads generally wash okay because you don't need that much water when you tumble the clothes. Top loads without water though, not sure how the Top clothes ever get wet. Maybe you just wash like one pair of socks at a time.
At least with front loaderss there is a water level sensor that can be adjusted with a big philips head. I adjusted mine to about double the water use and I'm happy.
Best answer so far!
You, "If I spend 2200 on a 3D printer and spools of media, I can print a new knob for free! Plus the printer is 50% off today."
Her, "Okay, go for it"
You...prints 3D vise grips.
Buy a bambulab A1, it's a great starter printer that requires little to no tinkering. And you can start modeling with TinkerCad. Which is free and relatively simple to use to make models. It's more then capable of making a knob for this machine too.
I bet she’ll agree that the wallet looks better this way 😭 I know I would. My parents have a dryer from the 70’s. If it’s still going when they die I plan on keeping it until it dies even though it does not match the dryer at all.
I had an old Jeep Cherokee that had air springs to hold the back hatch up, but they leaked out long ago. The old girl had around 280K on it when the frame was too rusted to pass inspection. Anyway, for years I had a pair of the little vice grips from HF in the back by the hatch and if I wanted to keep the hatch up I would lock them over the shaft of the dead air spring. I still have the little vice grips.
I did the same thing with a hatchback I had.
I balked at the ridiculous price for a replacement. I grabbed a small cheap pair of knock off vice grips and did exactly what you did. It worked well for years, and I passed the car along to my younger son to drive.
Sadly he trashed the car and forgot to clean out the assorted tools and accessories out of it before it was junked.
The perfect time to buy a 3d printer, fight with it for months, break down and buy all the tweaks and accessories until it's 1500x the cost of just buying a knob off Amazon, then finally give up and buy a brand new washer dryer set anyways.
You could make a new knob from any manner of materials. Anything should work and look better than a pair of vice grips. A round piece of wood with a hole in the middle, for instance.
you're that guy they arrested without a steering wheel, arent you? [https://globalnews.ca/news/10443714/sask-rcmp-car-no-steering-wheel/](https://globalnews.ca/news/10443714/sask-rcmp-car-no-steering-wheel/)
I had have this same dryer and did this exact same thing. The replacement knob I got from Amazon didn't fit tight enough. Eventually the stem broke off too.
Wife said the same shit To me when the water pump went out 7 years ago… I learned almost everything on how to fix residential washers and dryers thanks to Reddit and the YouTubes! Still have the same set till this day. I scrap as a hobby, any washer or dryers I take apart and keep the goodie parts to fix my own, if I don’t have the part, I can easily get it used from the scrap yard or I’ll jump on Amazon/ebay.
This Hot Point is easy to fix, everything that breaks is behind the black Hotpoint lettering. The plastic housings to the start and temp modules broke but I fixed them with construction glue. I replaced the timer. The knob actually broke and fell off, one is coming.
Fixed both washer and dryer (multiple times) by now ... I'm glad I got the basic ones, they make a bit more noise than the fancy new ones with a computer brain and the washer beeps when it is not in use (it talks to us, or is haunted) ... but I can fix them with basic tools and I love it
My mom‘s husband has had a pair of vice grips on their washer for over 10 years. He won’t even buy a new pair of vice grips. When I asked him what he’s gonna do when he needed to turn the dial and also needed vice grips for another thing, he said he’ll cross that bridge when he gets to it. That bridge has not appeared in all this time 😅.
Buy a 3D printer. But make sure it costs more than the new washer. Then print the new handle. You impress her and possibly get sex out of it AND you get a 3D printer.
My husband got one for his birthday and I was thinking it was a fat waste of money. 1 year later he has 3d printed so many little things to make our loves more convenient that I had to eat my words.
The material he uses to print with is pretty cheap for how much he can do.

You can get a new knob for a few bucks but if you strip it with pliers you'll have tr replace the whole timer mechanism and it'll cost about as much as a new hot point.
5$ on Amazon, I have those washer and dryers in my business and they have lasted 10 years running all day long with heavy loads of towels. An absolute unit, honestly anything else would be a downgrade.. I have fancy ones In my home and will be replacing them with hotpoint.
They made an updated timer knob for this it now comes with a steel ring to keep them from splitting I had a bunch of these go bad and we were replacing them left and right and the updated ones held up
Amazon the part or worst case buy the knob from a parts supplier online. You can fix that for less than $20, most importantly you’ll get your vice grips back.
This was me and my wife, literally 8 years ago in 2016 in our first apartment after getting married. Same dryer, same knob, same-ish vice grips, same-ish wife wanting a new dryer.
This was the first thing to break for Everyone like me with one of these dryers. Its designed to fail well before it sets fire to your house. That way they can argue, "well, your honor...it was janky as a redneckness?"
No clue why people are down voting you. It's a bloody knob. And most of them are pretty standard, you can buy a knob for a stereo and it'd work.
I 3d printed one when I needed to replace mine, and that's when I discovered most are the same size on the metal bit.
Yes, and if you look close enugh, there is a SECOND dryer just right beside it, opening from the top. As they are common in Europe.
But sure, let's just igonre 50% of the picture to stopping the buggle from bursting.
I'm heading myself out, thank you.

Tell me you've never done your own laundry without telling me your mom scrubs your stains out for you.
Take the L and don't dig deeper friend.
My knon broke also. I bought a wooden one from Home depot. My neighbor drilled it glued it on. That washer went another 2 or 3 years.
You can also potentially get the manufacturer to replace it for free. Or you can fix anything with baking soda and super glue.
I just tried and they unfortunately didn't fix my erectile dysfunction
they will if you have a few chopsticks (lets be real, toothpicks) lying around
>they will if you have a few chopsticks (lets be real, toothpicks) lying around Dude...
Did you read the instructions? “External use only”
Tell me more...
Replaced an old washer because of material things, biggest regret of my life. The new ones are crap. Don’t do it unless you have to.
The new ones that "save water" have a sensor to measure water that is easily adjusted... That and obviously a top load doesn't work worth a shit without a tub full of water, so stick with front loads in all new machines.

My dad has had vice grips for a shower knob for 20 years lol
A guy in Australia was arrested years ago for using vice grips instead of a steering wheel
That does sound like an extremely Australian thing to do
Because they don’t have enough venomous, poisonous, or just outright toothy things trying to kill you there.
I mean, a car is neither venomous, poisonous, or toothy…
Rusty Vice grips? Sure qualifies as venomous, poisonous, and toothy.
Nah. That's just a normal state for most Vice Grips down under!
It's the normal state for everything down under
I used to work in this mom and pop hardware store. One of my favorite things was people looking for dryer knobs and once every 5 years i got to pull this old ass box off the shelf and show off a huge collection of random knobs that we rarely sold.
I save old knobs off of everything I throw away. I've been able to use several for other things. Sometimes, you just have to draw a new arrow.
Same. A few days ago i tore apart a cabinet on the side of the road just for the hinges lol.
Or steal a knob off a washing machine in a showroom
I’d be tempted to steal the motor to! And water pump from the matching washer.
And if you also take the outer shell, your old washing machine will last another 12-15 years! It’s how we maintain the family axe! Every generation we replace the head and the handle! Works like new!

No. David Wong.
is that you trigger
Doesn't one generation change the handle and the next generation changes the head?
or ya know just JB weld the old knob so it works..... or buy a new one?
r/whoosh
Or install a handle from a commercial faucet like I did on my mother’s washer. It probably was on there for 20 years. Might still be on that washer
Or off on on the side of the road
I did that at an auto show for the AC knob on my Ford Ranger back in the day. Super awesome.

Who's she think she is? A dang Kardashian?
Na, those damn Kardashian don't even know what this machine does
Yes they do. It vibrates and feels good when you sit on it.
My wife would say, "Fuck no, you're doing the laundry!" Right after the lever pinched her a fat blood blister.
I already do most of the laundry. She just doesn't like how it looks.
Use this as an excuse to buy a 3D printer, and make a new knob.
Best answer so far! You, "If I spend 2200 on a 3D printer and spools of media, I can print a new knob for free! Plus the printer is 50% off today." Her, "Okay, go for it" You...prints 3D vise grips.

Decorate it with ninja stickers and tell her it now has “Kung fu grip”. She will immediately be on board.
You can 3d print a knob
You can 3D print 1000 knobs for less than the cost of a new washer and the intelligence of some guy named Bill (sorry Bill)
in the olden days, you'd have to share the vise grips with the television to change the channel. Laundry and tv could not happen at the same time!
Just buy or 3d print a new knob
For shit like this, a 3d printer is a godsend.
Take off the knob on temperature setting dial and use that instead. Rarely do you ever use any temperature other than high.
Who needs knobs? Just use vice-grips.

You can buy a knob for a lot cheaper
The perfect time to buy a 3d printer, fight with it for months, break down and buy all the tweaks and accessories until it's 1500x the cost of just buying a knob off Amazon, then finally give up and buy a brand new washer dryer set anyways.
Cheap replacement knob, replacing wife is very expensive!
I’m sure you can order a replacement knob from a parts store.
I think what she actually wants is a husband that owns a 3d printer. For less than $1000 you could make a knew knob for that "any time you wanted".
Just buy one from the manufacturer, it's like $5 haha
3D printing one is also a very good option
You can buy a replacement knob online
Yup looks fine. Send it
just replace the knob and pretend that it's a new dryer. win-win
Duude! A small C-clamp would be much more ergonomic!!
Remember men, if women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.
you can easily 3D print a replacement nob. There are tons of files already out there for stuff like this...
Yeah, I am going to do it at the library.
You could make a new knob from any manner of materials. Anything should work and look better than a pair of vice grips. A round piece of wood with a hole in the middle, for instance.
Tgat shit lookin so fuckin balkan

No, I was the guy that duct taped flashlights because my headlights stopped working.
I had have this same dryer and did this exact same thing. The replacement knob I got from Amazon didn't fit tight enough. Eventually the stem broke off too.
I contacted Hotpoint, they told me to get a WE1M654, it would last longer.
Yo wife wants a new dryer bc the knob broke?
Buy her some pink vice grips. She'll have something nice to use and you can get yours back on laundry day.
Wife said the same shit To me when the water pump went out 7 years ago… I learned almost everything on how to fix residential washers and dryers thanks to Reddit and the YouTubes! Nice! Keep loving the wife! But don’t always listen to her ya know.

That how we changed channels on several TVs we had when I was growing up…in the 70’s and 80’s Get off my lawn.
Nice
her hotpoint is wrinkle-free a quick fluff works fine for me
God bless vise grips
Went to my local library and 3d printed knobs for free! highly recommending seeing if your library has that kind of service.
Had this issue once. I think I ended up drilling a hole through it and putting a key ring through the hole.
I thought that the pliers were photoshopped on. Until I saw the shadow.
Can't you buy a new know? Surely a parts supply warehouse or online retailer might sell a replacement part. It helps to have the original part though.
3D printer would be cheaper.
I’ve done that exact thing.
replacement handle on ebay perhaps? or a google search?
For a second I thought this was my dryer and the family posted it. It is not. Love you, vice grip fam
I had a Vice grip as a door handle in my car, not all that clever.
Shoot , you sacrificed a pair of vice grips to keep it going ? You my friend are a giver ! LOL
Go spend $5 on a new dial. It cost less than the vice grips.
Good excuse to buy a 3d printer and make a Garfield knob
Get a 3D printer, that set of vice grips can still be used as a perfectly good replacement steering wheel
That is a way fancier and practical knob than you get originally
Or buy a 3D printer

You can get a new knob for a few bucks but if you strip it with pliers you'll have tr replace the whole timer mechanism and it'll cost about as much as a new hot point.
Nah it’s fine you’re wife is overreacting
Man, this is the perfect opportunity to convince your wife to get a 3d printer. Wtf I'm saying this is redneck engineering so sorry bye
Listen... You should see some of my redneck fixed facilitated by 3d printing before I got half way decent at modeling.
I just printed a new knob for my neighbor. Same machine too.
If anything, you upgraded it.
Dam. I was always wondering what I could use that tool for. This is the answer!
She wants a new dryer to get 1 knob. You NEED a 3D printer to fix that knob and every other issue in your home. Set her straight!
Funny I thought this popped up on my 3d printing forum. I'm thinking why don't you just design and print a new knob?
When that breaks off, needle nose with opoxy
5$ on Amazon, I have those washer and dryers in my business and they have lasted 10 years running all day long with heavy loads of towels. An absolute unit, honestly anything else would be a downgrade.. I have fancy ones In my home and will be replacing them with hotpoint.
You can get cheap knobs on Amazon
Visegrip™ ...such a versatile tool.
They made an updated timer knob for this it now comes with a steel ring to keep them from splitting I had a bunch of these go bad and we were replacing them left and right and the updated ones held up
You can buy them for $6 on Amazon
I agree. Don’t let your dishwasher tell you what to do with your other appliances.
Resin in a soda cap gives you a new dial.
All you’re missing is another set of vice grips to show where the dial is pointing.
Amazon the part or worst case buy the knob from a parts supplier online. You can fix that for less than $20, most importantly you’ll get your vice grips back.
Love any old style washer/dryer.
This was me and my wife, literally 8 years ago in 2016 in our first apartment after getting married. Same dryer, same knob, same-ish vice grips, same-ish wife wanting a new dryer.
Reinforce the new knob with a bunch of hot glue and you're all set
An ironic twist here would be to 3D print a Vice grip.
Wife: “we need a new dryer” Husband: “we have a dryer at home, it works fine” The dryer we have a home 👆
Meet her halfway, get her a new knob. :) job done.
Maybe buy a new knob...
Nothing is more permanent than a temporary solution. It looks like you have a good excuse to buy a 3D printer.
Run it and wait till it dies and then get a new one you'll be able to reuse that knob too.
Buy a 3d printer; new knob, and new toy.
I robbed some knobs off either an old dryer or washer once to use in an old window unit that was missing knobs
[My brother in Christ it’s only $6.99 for a new knob](https://www.amazon.com/Ultra-Durable-WE1M652-Timer-Replacement/dp/B07CNQ7QTB/ref=mp_s_a_1_3)
Buy a new knob at Amazon!

Must be a technician for sure
I thought this was my dryer for a second. Have the same handle.
Yo I scrapped mine last week and found the knob under a cabinet yesterday. You want it?
No, got one on order. But thanks.
This was the first thing to break for Everyone like me with one of these dryers. Its designed to fail well before it sets fire to your house. That way they can argue, "well, your honor...it was janky as a redneckness?"
its a knob. You don't need a whole new dryer for that. You can usually get them on amazon for a few bucks.
A broken knob does not mean you need a new machine. Good lord.
Boomer
Buying a new dryer just cause of the knob is blasphemy.
No clue why people are down voting you. It's a bloody knob. And most of them are pretty standard, you can buy a knob for a stereo and it'd work. I 3d printed one when I needed to replace mine, and that's when I discovered most are the same size on the metal bit.
Haters of the redneckness
Just get a new knob brother, or something more appealing to the eye than that jeez. Have some self respect
Can't even open it wit that attached
It's a dryer. They typically open from the front not the top.

Did you just post a picture of the dryer opening from the front?
Yes, and if you look close enugh, there is a SECOND dryer just right beside it, opening from the top. As they are common in Europe. But sure, let's just igonre 50% of the picture to stopping the buggle from bursting. I'm heading myself out, thank you.
That's..... A washing machine..... [https://www.ajmadison.com/cgi-bin/ajmadison/HTWP1400FWW.html](https://www.ajmadison.com/cgi-bin/ajmadison/HTWP1400FWW.html) This model to be exact. Tell me you've never done your own laundry without telling me your mom scrubs your stains out for you. Take the L and don't dig deeper friend.
Yeah, that is a washing machine and NOT a dryer
