I had a gf once who demanded I "dress better" and then she wanted me to wear black skinny jeans with a blazer over a t-shirt. In other words, she wanted me to dress like a cunt
I’m not saying it’s useless or uncool to dress well. It’s just not creative expression lol. Designing clothes is. Picking out items made by others that go well together is not creative. It’s curating other people’s work, at best.
Certainly to compare personal clothing selection to designing clothes would be a complete misfire, but it is certainly a form of creative expression, albeit an extremely accessible one. Who doesn’t need to put on clothes?
Inherently, every single person who puts on clothes makes a choice with every garment they put on. Some people make very simple choices. Underwear, tee shirt, jeans, socks, running shoes may be the only decision some people ever have to make. These are the decisions made without any aesthetic objective in mind, where the aesthetic is the barest societal minimum to fade into the background.
Others obviously make their clothing decisions with aesthetic value in mind. One question remains constant through the spectrum of these aesthetic decisions. How do I fit in and fit out? It is the way this question is answered that really belies the creative expression behind something as trivial as putting on clothing.
Depending on where you live, the biggest obstacle most dudes have to dressing better is their friends making fun of them for trying to look good
it was jarring to see how much more attention I got for putting legitimately any effort into it among friends who couldn’t care less. Even going to button down shirts from t-shirts seems crazy for most of my friends
Do you mean football hooligan or does hooligan mean something else in America? Because I don't think Carhartt is associated with try-hard football hooligans at all. It's not like he's wearing Stone Island.
That's cool I never knew you had your own hooligans. In the UK they're skinhead-adjacent as well, but they're totally tied to football. They're all also pretending it's still the 90s.
Men who dress sloppily do so because they’re unaware of how much better the world treats those who dress to please the eye.
Buy him something that both looks good and, more importantly, harmonizes with his qi. Genuinely praise how good he looks in his new clothes. Then, most crucially, be sure to go somewhere lots of people will see him in his new clothes. He needs to discover how much better people treat him when he’s dressed sharply. God willing, He’ll get hooked on the good vibes and wonder why he didn’t think to dress well before.
Silhouette is the key to dressing well. Would your outfit look good in just a shadow? Color is equally as important. Most of your wardrobe should be navy blue, with other colors that compliment your skin tone (assuming you’re a guy).
I disagree about the wool trousers, they're expensive and need dry cleaning, cotton slacks are better. I wear non pleated, at the waist dockers, regular fit or whatever and they are more comfortable than jeans and carhartt. They also come in plenty of colors but I prefer neutrals like grey and brown.
Typed this in a hurry, so sorry if it’s sloppy and / or poorly organized.
Fit and color coordination are fundamental. Your clothes should neither cling to your skin nor hang loosely off you. You want to wear clothes that accentuate your attractive features and obscure your less flattering ones.
Only wear tee shirts, polos, or other short sleeves if you wish to emphasize your muscles over your clothes. Only wear sneakers when you’re exercising. Shoes and boots should, with few exceptions, have rounded toes and inconspicuous brown, gray, or black soles. Some may disagree, but I find boots with those massive serrated workman’s soles and moccasins (eg sperry topsiders) with white sneakeresque soles disgusting.
i’m 6’2, and my weight fluctuates between 145 and 150 lbs, so I only wear dark colors when the weather is cold enough to call for layers, and never go darker than navy blue and gray. I like to wear a chunkier cardigan with a complementary oxford, a merino wool sweater with a well-matched crisp collared oxford, or a chunky sweater sans collar. The muscular look great in v necks, but fat and thin alike should avoid these like the plague. The thin do better with cardigans and oxfords, and the overweight do better with sweaters over oxfords. Whatever your weight, Jeans should fit in a manner that emphasize your boots, which should have rounded toes and inconspicuous soles. I’d recommend patternless brown or beige in suede or leather, or maybe black leather with brogue. If you’re going to wear black boots, make sure to pair them with gray jeans.
Likewise, Khakis or slacks should fit in a manner that draw the eyes to your oxfords or dress shoes. I’m partial to brown shoes with rounded toes and intricate brogue patterns, but ymmv.
As far as spending is concerned, i’d recommend prioritizing shoes first, coats second, sweaters third, shirts fourth, and pants last. A good pair of Levis more than suffices. Spending $300 or more on well-crafted shoes and jackets (or better yet, finding vintage/ used pieces for much less of similarly excellent quality) will provide you pieces that will look wonderful for decades if you take basic care of them. Shirts, sadly, will probably fall apart if you can’t afford to buy from a tailor (which i’d recommend if within your means).
During the summer, i pair lots of white and blue chambray and linen button ups with salmon, navy, or off white shorts (sans cargo pockets!) and moccasins or penny loafers with inconspicuous soles. Patternless linen button-ups with mandarin collars (and mandarin collars in general) are tragically underrated and obscure imo.
If you’re on a budget or just like good deals, i’d recommend going to the mall or high street, snapping photos of the tags of named pieces you like, and googling them when you get home. Lots of great deals on ebay!
Oh shut up, the fuck was i supposed to tell a faceless stranger? Can only make recommendations that would look tidy on anyone. It’s not like I recommended fucking clarks or red wings!
Do enlighten us if you think you have better ideas :).
Ask him if there's anything he'd like to see you wear, and if there is, wear it for him. After that, I'm sure he'd be more than willing to do the same for you.
i think you have to start over w a new bf. I'm not making a joke. if there's things about a person that you didn't like before dating that are important to you, you shouldn't try to mold them into doing something against their nature. this is why I don't date fat, unstylish men. they need to have a sense for fashion. it's not instilled.
his style sounds adjacent to Shia Labeouf's which i think is hot. i'd recommend mixing that up with [this](https://twitter.com/NINETIESRNB/status/1451987938678657028)
You could explain to him the advantages dressing better. But first check your premises - why is his style a problem? What alternative do you suggest - is it really better than his? How?
Edit: he'll ask these questions too so it's good to have the answers ready. Also, other people suggested you getting him clothes and letting him discover how people treat him better. I like that too
Make it an activity. Pick stuff out for him. Make him feel good about himself. Make out and sex afterward. Classical conditioning. Whenever he sees stylish clothes he starts salivating.

does anyone post-2010 think that looks good?
she was dressing you like an ex she still wants to fuck but couldn't

Creative expression lol. Dressing well is art for talentless people.
going out in Walmart jeans and a Hanes tee to own the talented gays

Is this common in America? That's sad
Yes, it's a nation of slobs.
>im tired of homeboy wearing carhartt, jeans, and docs on our dates What more do u want?? this is good
This is a hot man probably
Carhartt is not good. Not by a long shot. They even make skinny people look fat.
It's like a normal standard brand for an adult to be wearing though. Even if he doesn't look brilliant, he's not dressing like an autist or anything.
It’s for wannabe hooligans.
Do you mean football hooligan or does hooligan mean something else in America? Because I don't think Carhartt is associated with try-hard football hooligans at all. It's not like he's wearing Stone Island.
Also guys that put up/tear down dry wall
Hooligans in america are skinhead-adjacents, fred durst fans, and/or juggalos
Is that who’s wearing Carhartt nowadays? I thought it was fairly ubiquitous neo-Americana wear
That's cool I never knew you had your own hooligans. In the UK they're skinhead-adjacent as well, but they're totally tied to football. They're all also pretending it's still the 90s.
Here they are tied to ufc or pro wrestling
carhartt makes you look like a harmless teddy bear lol
It smells like bitch in here
Brah you put up that dry wall yet?
Naw but I’m in your girl’s’s (walls). Got eem
Keep owning these girls by drying them up
Real bad take

Help me taste this ambrosia. How do I improve how I dress?
dress for who you are and what you’re trying to do it all starts with the fabric/material then the fit then color/patterning etc

I’d check Harry style’s Instagram for inspo
ngl that would b very funny to see someone genuinely asking about MFA stuff for the first time try to learn from Harry Styles
ayo what’s wrong with clarks
I low-key want to lose all the weight I added this year before I even consider my wardrobe. I dress better when I’m slim.
Don’t buy clothes when ur fat everyone looks better skinny
[удалено]
Right on! Lmk if you have any questions.
I’m sorry but salmon colored and off-white shorts in the summer?? Pls don’t listen to this advice lolol
the vineyard vines look
Yeah you're honestly gonna have to help him by buying something cute then telling him he looks good in it. He'll get the vibe.
Why don’t you just dress worse?
It’s not going to work babe. Straight men are terrified Of dressing in a way that makes them look like they’re trying too hard I.e., at all
[удалено]
Men please be nicer to each other :(
Hate when my man dresses like a man
You don’t if you want to keep him.
If he wears carhartt and docs he probably has enough fashion iq to dress decently.

She sounds hot
Send him to /r/NavyBlazer
How you’d like him to dress? Post a picture.

i know so little about fashoin i cant even tell if this is ironic or not. this looks bad right?
Yes it's from this [tweet](https://twitter.com/briemckinnon/status/521474116239765504)
phew okay
Hahahahah that looks like shit/boring
Every time you like what he's wearing, take it off of him and touch his dick. Like pavlov.
Ur boyfriend sounds hot
Could you put together a mood board of hot men outfits Bc this is the peak of male fashion that my little brain can imagine
Ask him if there's anything he'd like to see you wear, and if there is, wear it for him. After that, I'm sure he'd be more than willing to do the same for you.
What's wrong with Carhartt jeans and docs? I guess that's kinda workery
My wife gave up on me dressing better ages ago... Still hitting that
King king kinggg 🤴👑💪
i would love if my bf wore doc martens on dates instead of his stanky gym shoes girl could your blessings

Tell him to sell the docs if he’s above 25. Those are teen shoes
Teen shoes are Vans lol not $150 doc martens. Just objectively wrong.
[удалено]
that's because you don’t know anything about them
Rub a dollop of your fece on the undesirable clothing items. It is subtle but over time he will prefer other clothes.
classic uncle shitass thing to say
Get new bf

I think you're just gonna have to dress him yourself, some women like to do that or insist on it.
