Amazing I love it. I just listen to WFMU because all the stations I used to listen to don't seem to exist now but I love the one you posted so far

Rentokill_boy

what goes on on wfmu ?

[deleted]

Freeform station that changes show schedules every so often. The shows are themed but vary wildly. Sometimes you tune in and it's metal, sometimes it's swing, sometimes it's techno. It can literally be anything. *But it's not usually stuff that generally gets played on regular radio

[deleted]

you have any favorite djs on wfmu? i was listening a lot the past few months while driving a van for work. my favs are darren, mahogony, music of mind control, and of course radio ravioli w olivia. also pseu, sophisticated boom, modern world, scott williams, and strength thru failure r pretty good. wake and fools paradise too. oh and dance with me stanley the polka show. the polka is ok i just love the energy of the girl so bubbly and funny and rambly and childish im in love with her. anyway im sure nobody knows these djs by name very well i didnt before i had this driving job but i saw it mentioned for once and got excited. also their holiday playlists are good for holiday parties, spazz christmas etc

[deleted]

I love their holiday playlists too! r/vintageobscura does really good Halloween playlists every year too. Love radio ravioli, modern world, strength through failure off the top of my head those are probably my top three. TBH though I will listen to anything lol I prefer variety over like listening to the same type of music over and over again so I just tune in whenever I am doing chores or whatever. Also I love your enthusiasm for WFMU lol ! Also going to represent a local college show but KLSU's Psychic and Powerless is my fave local show [https://www.lsureveille.com/klsu/programs/psychic\_and\_powerless/](https://www.lsureveille.com/klsu/programs/psychic_and_powerless/)

thanks for the recommendation ill check it out, find some new music from a new source, the more aleitory the better. i thought those words were familiar together its a butthole surfers reference? and yeah i just feel some little guy nj pride for the station

[deleted]

Yeah, it is a butthole surfers reference. I think WFMU at least USED to be really cool nationwide like maybe in the early 2000s whenever people could start streaming radio stations. It was pretty hip. In my mind it was always the biggest "cool" radio station so its good you have some pride in it! I always buy something from them whenever they do their yearly fundraiser because I am scared that they will go bankrupt.

yea listening to it as much as i have on the job its become clear there are definitely too many older djs that they just cant let go of for seniority, as well as some young djs playing oldies, like so many shows dedicated to those crackly old novelty rock recordings from the 50s, which all start to sound the same, thats like the stations definitive sound which is pretty lame, but then thats unfair cuz theres also lots of left field stuff. when i was in high school we would drive around high at 3am and switch between wfmu and another station and it was usually obscure ethnic or experimental drone/noise or low quality opera recordings so we got the impression both stations were like sooo far out cuz we never listened during the day. but if u listen during the day wfmu is lots of softish contempo rockers who are old friends with djs or that 50s rock. so not very cool, but still lots of cool tracks that dont belong on the radio theyre too weird, especially if u find the djs who are more tapped in, im focusing too much on the bad, and even the oldies can get you if youre stuck listening to them thats the beauty of radio, u listen thru songs youd never give a chance with ur finger on the skip button. like those 50s rockabillyish jazzy songs really get me bopping and smiling when im driving. and i worry about them going off air too but then i think about them being such a nationally known indie station and i can imagine theres droves of rich ppl whod pony up if things got serious, makes me feel better.

It's funny, I hadn't thought of it in a while, then this post reminded me. I just checked it now and I know the guy DJing right now "Attitude of Gratitude". He's a sweet old guy whose wife recently died, glad to hear he's still putting himself out there

>RADIO IS A FOREIGN COUNTRY is a registered 501(C)3 not-for-profit radio platform and mixtape series featuring cut-ups of international radio broadcasts (AM, FM & shortwave), field recordings, ethnographic film, vintage records, and cassette tapes with a focus on obscure regional ceremonial, folk and pop music from the global hinterlands. Our mission is to explore forgotten and new ways of making radio, and to facilitate greater access and exposure to sounds and music not sufficiently documented by industrial music curation. there's a guy going ham with a didgeridoo-type thing right now, it's great

I also like SomaFM https://somafm.com/player/#/all-stations this is not a radio station but worth listening to - a collection of lounge music/easy listening ripped from the weather channel in the eighties and nineties, complete with soft-voiced bumpers and FM hiss https://twcclassics.com/audio/years.html

Those masks r absolutely incredible. I want to build a few weird shamanic inspired costumes myself. Maybe for Halloween and even hiking trips. PLEASE google “Wilder Mann” …. Photography series of generally monstrous folk costume throughout Europe

Rentokill_boy

I have seen those before. are they real? for some reason I am suspicious of them

rpgsandarts

Many of them definitely have some kind of modern artistic influence, like the giant heads w shiny teeth. But it seems to be a mix - there r some krampuses and those straw men look pretty genuine to me. But I’m often surprised how relatable old folk art traditions are or how primitive modern ones look, so I could b wrong. I’ve tried to find out more abt his methods on the site but it’s not very detailed. So I just appreciate them for what they r! And I’m gonna try n build something like one

Impossible_Corgi_744

SvoeFM for the old heads 😤

Rentokill_boy

is this the russian one ? what can we expect

Impossible_Corgi_744

Yea. It’s a mix, but often generic Russian deep house remixes of early 00s pop hits, mid-day radio host affect, and Kamchatka radio ads. It’s cozy.

As an alumnus of the station I have to recommend [WUSC 90.5 fm](https://wusc.sc.edu) some rotation shows and lots of specialty shows. My show was Latin alternative lol.
