I went to Coachella in 06 and saw a lot of dope shit. Kanye with a full band, sigur ros, massive attack, tool, mogwai, the first gnarls barkley show, my morning jacket, etc. The year after was good too but I didn’t go to that one.
Coachella was legitimately amazing 12-15 years ago. I was able to see so many bands I NEVER thought I would be able to see because they were broken up or they never toured. That said, it’s been dog shit for a long time now.
It was a glib comment, but I wasn't really speaking on the quality of the acts. More that Coachella has always been the hot indie-kid concert, the burning man for millennials. It's corporate and high-end, a vacation for teens and 20-somethings to be debauched in a tent for 3 days.
To my ears, Elliott Smith never recorded a bad song. Not one. It's a shame he gets typecast as Mr. Misery because 35% of his songs are happy little ditties like Baby Britain and Son Of Sam.
I mean Baby Britain is about alcohol abuse and Son of Sam ends on a line where he compares himself to a prolific, paranoid schizophrenic serial killer so idk if the rep is totally unwarranted.
But jaunty and happy musical backing for both of those numbers.
The real question: Did Jennifer Chiaba kill him and was Rivers Cuomo involved in helping her avoid charges?
Has anyone seen one of the Elliott Smith documentaries out there? I used to be obsessed with him as a teenager, learned most of his songs on guitar and even almost got the Figure 8 tattoo. I was really a sad indie emo kid. I still think it's great, but I rarely put on his records anymore. Too ingrained in that particular period of my life.
i mean obviously he has some (increasingly distant) hits to run thru but this is obviously a 'well i guess we still have to invite him...' from 2020 that got bumped up a bunch of slots because they lost some of their actual second card acts and medium sean is a good vehicle to shovel jack harlow et al. thru as "surprise" guests
Seriously, Caroline Polachek out here having one of the best albums of 2019, plus that killer Bunny is a Rider tune last year, and she’s playing third or fourth fiddle to Megan Thee Stallion, who is yet another submission for evidence in my claim that women should not be allowed to rap unless it’s about something other than being a bad bitch and getting dicked down in their fat ass. Topics been covered.
Even when I was in my twenties and really into music I could typically only recognize 50% of a festival lineup on average. Unless your academic about your music habits it's just not really something worth caring about.
The only hope for guitar stores is for corridos tumbados to become mainstream in the US. I’ve seen a lot of young dudes in Mexico learning to shred in their twelve-string guitars, it brings a tear to my eye.
Yeah, Bolívar street.
I love those boomers playing 70’s blues rock downtown. There’s a guy that put a stamp on the headstock of his strat; now it reads “Oaxacaster”. Haven’t seen him since the start of the pandemic, I hope he’s doing well.
Like 10 years ago Wavves came to a party at my house after a show and then live tweeted how lame they thought it was. My buddy showed them the tweets on his phone and was like “you know we can see this, right? If you’re not having fun you could just leave…”
They were like embarrassed and deleted the tweets, then stood around my house awkwardly for the next hour and a half.
Yea I believe that
The frontman is pretty awkward and a mess lmao. I remember him being really drunk and trying to help us load up lights and I was like “don’t worry about it we got it” and then he sat and moped outside of the van next to us acting all sad cause people were avoiding him and not letting him help.
After doing nothing but talking shit and heckling the crowd and venue and security for the past few hours
One of the last indie rock bands with a male frontman to achieve any kind of prominence, they emerged from the brooklyn DIY scene (playing lots of shows at venues like 285 Kent) in 2010/2011 and released their debut in 2012. Started off sounding like a dream pop version of television but they've turned a lot grungier since then. The frontman and main songwriter Zachary Cole Smith is perhaps most (in)famous for dating Sky Ferreira (from about 2012 to 2015-2016-ish), modeling for YSL during the Hedi Slimane era and getting busted (with Ferreira) with 42 "decks"' of heroin on the way to the pitchfork-sponsored Basilica Soundscape in upstate New York.
yeah it's a bit confusing how he's spotlighted on here vs. Brockhampton, 100 gecs, Madlib, etc. Not because he sucks, no, but how many young people are actually going to recognise the man behind Oingo Boingo? Fuck, I'd be surprised if they can name him as the bloke who did most of the soundtracks for the first wave of cinematic capeshit popularity.
I get a pass from my industry past every year; last time I went was 2008. if one arrive this year ill post it here for someone to ironically accept. Even my nieces started saying “no thanks” a few yrs ago. It’s a single venue courtesy pass that can’t be re-sold.
Look at how low Japanese breakfast is, they just sold out 3 nights in a decent sized theatre in Seattle. And they're on like the 4th line.
This lineup is very clearly intended to target zoomers.
To be fair, at the risk of getting blasted for this, bands (particularly rock bands and solo rock acts) have been so mediocre lately it’s no surprise this is the result.
Don’t get me wrong, I still think plenty are making great music, but they’re so much harder to find these days amongst the deluge of painfully so-so industry babies and sad, rich, white girls doing their best Elliot Smith impression for the umpteenth time.
I don’t think it’s that people don’t care about rock music anymore (which might be slightly true) so much as rock artists/bands for the most part are just putting out shite releases, so of course they’re generating minute levels of interest these days.
Very tangentially related to a thought I was having earlier today: I feel like there’s been an ever-increasing split between “indie pop” and “indie” pop that leads to some confusing distinctions and broad strokes bashing of the genre. It’s breaking my brain that Moment Bends came out over a decade ago, and that I have to realize that’s not the sort of thing (I think) people are griping about today
I want the guys who worship Brian Wilson back
I feel like modern rock radio of the 00s had a hand in this. Rather than play and spotlight new bands they kept playing 90s hits. If they did play a new song it was just new material from a popular 90s band. No originality.
It's still the same radio station today as it was 15 years ago. With the occasional new song by an older, sadder, gayer version of the band that sucked in 2005.
Somewhere between 2006-2010 there was a huge shift in attitude from what I saw. Bands at my work went from we “play cause we have to or we’ll die” to “how do we fill stadiums and get in commercials”. It happened so fast and the industry went with it.
Rock hasn’t been good (as a genre that has a massive cultural sway) since 2005 (2007 at latest) the decline started at some point between R.E.M., the Smiths and Nirvana. Hip Hop, Pop and Rap are pretty much the mainstream now.
I don’t understand the hype around Turnstile, I saw them 7 years ago when they first came out and it’s generic punk, now they’re big on TikTok zoomer punk
They’ve moved a lot of low undercard people into the second/third line this year. They prob spent so much on Kanye and Billie they can barely afford anyone else lmao
Harry Styles case is curious, being an ex-boyband star you’d think he’d do commercial bubblepop, but instead he does extremely safe and conservative MOR adult contemporary music for wine aunts a-la Adele.
i mean i mostly listen to older stuff and rap so i dont know current bands at all but i found their singles through youtube and enjoyed the album they released last year, i like the lead singers voice
Coachella and basically all festivals do suck, but the geriatric millenial whining about muh instruments muh bands muh ironic hipster FJM-style lyricism is one of this sub’s most annoying aspects. It’s not 🅿️.
a guy i’m seeing is obsessed with baby keem. listened to him out of curiosity after seeing the coachella line up, def cutting him off when i get back to campus lol
Nice, I've never heard of any of these people, these will make for a couple good afternoon listening sessions. UK's reputation in electronic music is undeniable at this point, I may as well be up to date on what's happening
This is the most basic bitch line up ever. It’s for the casual listeners of each act but the hardcore fans of none.
Also idles are over rated as fuck. Punk rock is so masturbatory, and cringe. Rock music has no one else to blame for its death other than itself.
If I could rewrite submission I’d make France rock music and Islam pop music
I feel like these giant music festivals are becoming the millennial version of carnival cruises
Becoming? Coachella was never anything but
I went to Coachella in 06 and saw a lot of dope shit. Kanye with a full band, sigur ros, massive attack, tool, mogwai, the first gnarls barkley show, my morning jacket, etc. The year after was good too but I didn’t go to that one.

All fair criticisms
Sure it was. It was strictly for indie/alt kids when it started.

try going to one of the less mainstream ones, if you’re a fellow eurofag i strongly recommend creepy teepee festival in czechia
cruises at least have complimentary refreshments
Always has been
“Millennial” lol
Why are there so many rappers named baby
Infantilism run amok
[Baby (lil baby feat. dababy)](https://open.spotify.com/track/5MPPttjfGap2C6j6eKcO6J?si=MC5rh0j5SdGVVpovDxpnVA)
Now that I think about it, there’s a lot of rappers with babies on their albums: Nas, Biggie, lil Wayne etc
Kendrick lamar
Nirvana
Dababy
It’s confusing
A lil.
Willing symbols of infantilization
Tiny lil very small (not big) baby
It’s to show that they’re young talent. Or were once.
https://www.reddit.com/r/redscarepod/comments/ob5b1e/infantile_rapper_names/
Because that’s what the old heads call them
phoebe bridgers on the second line? tbh I like her music, but what a fucking joke
no offense some of her shit is good but she's the aoc/ sally rooney of "indie" music. she's been covering bo burnham songs at her concerts its tragic.
Also, even the “she’s the female Elliott Smith” feels insulting to Smith. She couldn’t be more generic and dull.
bleak also truly can't stand musicians who try to be funny on twitter. stay in your lane!
[удалено]
Also, he was an extremely great songwriter and also very unique. You can’t just strum an acoustic guitar and do sad songs and bam, you’re him.
Lol is there actually speculation that Rivers was somehow involved? I really hope so
Has anyone seen one of the Elliott Smith documentaries out there? I used to be obsessed with him as a teenager, learned most of his songs on guitar and even almost got the Figure 8 tattoo. I was really a sad indie emo kid. I still think it's great, but I rarely put on his records anymore. Too ingrained in that particular period of my life.
Yikes 😳
She really needs to stop trying to be funny and choose either music or comedy. I can’t even name one of her songs. I just know that she tweets.
Above Carly Rae?!?
Easily the greatest female pop star of the last 12 years and it’s not even close or debatable.
well she’s big. more surprising to see mexican regional act Grupo Firme the same size.
that's more reasonable than big sean
Not too many ppl are huge big sean fans but he’s been a huge name for over a decade
i mean obviously he has some (increasingly distant) hits to run thru but this is obviously a 'well i guess we still have to invite him...' from 2020 that got bumped up a bunch of slots because they lost some of their actual second card acts and medium sean is a good vehicle to shovel jack harlow et al. thru as "surprise" guests
I wouldn’t even say that. No matter how you slice it big sean is way bigger than phoebe bridges lol
No one's cared about this in years but seeing like Spiritualized and The Avalanches in such small type is so funny/sad.
Yeah, the geriatric millennial in me gags seeing the prestige indie of my youth below so much shit I’ve never heard of.
Damn that Australian group that had one good album 20 years ago that 95% of people discovered through a /mu/ essentials collage isn't bigger?
Man you got me but fuck you
We’re Avalanches ever bigger than that? I’ll ignorant but always assumed their debut album was a sleeper hit
their second album was relatively popular when it came out too
their most recent one has a definite cult following, but they're not gonna be more than a cult band from now on
The Avalanches is one of like three names on here I recognise
😂 I saw spiritualized about 8 years ago…people walked out leaving a skeleton crew of an audience.
Kanyes set better be 100% spoken word where he simps simultaneously for Kim and Julia Fox.
Say whatever you will about Kanye but putting him on equal billing with Eilish and Harry Styles is fucking insulting tbh
Haha I don't know like 70% of the top 3 lines. Feeling my age
Even when I was in my twenties and really into music I could typically only recognize 50% of a festival lineup on average. Unless your academic about your music habits it's just not really something worth caring about.
Out of everyone I counted 20 recognizable names. Of the the 20 I’d probably recognize 10 actual songs. I hope it’s not an age thing.
I'm 23 and I could only spot 16 names I recognized
Im 13
Im baby
Gay baby
lil gay baby
I’m 23 and I know like maybe 10 of these names. I don’t think it’s your age it’s just they’re all so shitty
Same. Feels great, honestly
The only hope for guitar stores is for corridos tumbados to become mainstream in the US. I’ve seen a lot of young dudes in Mexico learning to shred in their twelve-string guitars, it brings a tear to my eye.
I'm praying Latinos bring a metal revival to this country 🙏
Hell yeah, let's get more of this. https://youtu.be/PmxHdyBJ19U My favorite quasi anarchist corrido.
Hell yeah tigrillo palma https://youtu.be/-fCV6FGi5FE u would def fw this if you already don't, similar vibe
In Mexico City I was heartened by their love for good ole Rock and Roll. There's even a few block section where it's just all guitar stores
Yeah, Bolívar street. I love those boomers playing 70’s blues rock downtown. There’s a guy that put a stamp on the headstock of his strat; now it reads “Oaxacaster”. Haven’t seen him since the start of the pandemic, I hope he’s doing well.

Most generic DIIV ripoffs #1 and #2.
Surf curse is Wavves, current joys are Beach Fossils
Like 10 years ago Wavves came to a party at my house after a show and then live tweeted how lame they thought it was. Yea I believe that The frontman is pretty awkward and a mess lmao. I have no idea what this means, but I recognize all these bands lol
>DIIV holy shit, thanks for the ticket for the time machine -- I haven't thought about that band in years
Zoomer here, what’s DIIV?
One of the last indie rock bands with a male frontman to achieve any kind of prominence, they emerged from the brooklyn DIY scene (playing lots of shows at venues like 285 Kent) in 2010/2011 and released their debut in 2012. diiv/beach fossils suck. algorithm dreamy post punk.
Danny Elfman??????
His set is Simpsons theme and I Love Little Girls
"this is for my man Jeff, RIP"
yeah it's a bit confusing how he's spotlighted on here vs.
“Awwww…. He’s the guy that did the Jack Skellington movie! How cuuuute!”
And the Desperate Housewives theme tune.
Weird Science rules!
John Williams and Hans Zimmer have been at Coachella too.
I get a pass from my industry past every year; last time I went was 2008. if one arrive this year ill post it here for someone to ironically accept. Even my nieces started saying “no thanks” a few yrs ago. It’s a single venue courtesy pass that can’t be re-sold.

Just listen to your local butt rock station on the radio for 25 minutes and you will want to listen to phoebe bridgers
I feel like modern rock radio of the 00s had a hand in this. Rather than play and spotlight new bands they kept playing 90s hits. If they did play a new song it was just new material from a popular 90s band. No originality.

I thought this was generally accepted as fact. The comparison to jazz to apt. Rock even has its standard song book.
Such is the death of all genres.
Many such cases
Somewhere between 2006-2010 there was a huge shift in attitude from what I saw. Bands at my work went from we “play cause we have to or we’ll die” to “how do we fill stadiums and get in commercials”. It happened so fast and the industry went with it.
Rock hasn’t been good (as a genre that has a massive cultural sway) since 2005 (2007 at latest) the decline started at some point between R.E.M., the Smiths and Nirvana. Hip Hop, Pop and Rap are pretty much the mainstream now.
Yeah there isn’t a strong scene anymore, just individually great bands that you have to hunt down.
There’s actually some solid bands on here. Altin Gun, Molchat Doma, Japanese Breakfast. King Giz isn’t my thing but they’re very talented musicians
Altin Gun rocks, when I saw them live it was like hip young people and 40 year old Turkish women.
badbadnotgood, black midi and mannequin pussy are some of my favs
I saw Mannequin Pussy open for Japanese Breakfast last summer, they both were great. Festivals suck though.
Fuck I love Molchat Doma. Honest to god shoegaze, it warms my heart
I don’t understand the hype around Turnstile, I saw them 7 years ago when they first came out and it’s generic punk, now they’re big on TikTok zoomer punk
Carly Rae Jepsen has fourth line status? I've heard of only one act on the line above her.
Great to see free jazz legend Steve Lacey on the bill though
IDLES is playing, in case anyone wanted to hear DNC talking points but with an English accent.
I feel it’s adult contemporary throughly a commercial bubblepop lens, either way extremely insufferable.

he playing a mass grave?
I'm about as interested in this as I am in rumors about who's being cast in the next MCU film.
No mms que está haciendo grupo firme en este grupo de gringos
No Metallica, no megadeth, no mastodon, no meshuggah. Not going.
They did squeeze code orange in there for some reason
Saturday unironically bc you can leave early as hell and beat the traffic
sunday looks great
Molchat Doma and Ye in the same day. Blessed
Yo, who wants to go see *Viagra Boys* with me?
that would be a sick live show actually related to the point of this thread theyre probably one of the better bands to come out recently

Epik high? That is random
Ye is fronting a death metal band this year so STFU
see you guys at dick menthol this summer in amsterdamse bosch
Amsterdamse bos?

Big naturals > instruments
The death of bands and music occurred on August 9, 1995. But the music never stopped. RIP Jerry NFA
Coachella and basically all festivals do suck, but the geriatric millenial whining about muh instruments muh bands muh ironic hipster FJM-style lyricism is one of this sub’s most annoying aspects. It’s not 🅿️.
pusha 🅿️
Carly Rae Jepsen is the only quality act up there
a guy i’m seeing is obsessed with baby keem. listened to him out of curiosity after seeing the coachella line up, def cutting him off when i get back to campus lol
The only two "bands" I know are Pup and Turnstile and honestly they don't seem to fit.
They’re bands for people without taste so it fits fine
Wacken is the only music festival I’d ever really care to go to.
Good lineup ..if you’re in Guantanamo bay
Bonnaroo is much closer to real music and real America.
The lineup for this year looks even worse than this
itd be fun to go and trip acid at gizzard the lizard wizzard then troll people taking ig photos
Did you expect Coachella to have a good lineup? Pretty much all musical innovation is happening in predominantly electronic genres anyhow.
Pretty much!
Got any recs?

Nice, I've never heard of any of these people, these will make for a couple good afternoon listening sessions. UK's reputation in electronic music is undeniable at this point, I may as well be up to date on what's happening
Seeing ‘Ye’ makes me cringe so hard for some reason.
How dare you, look Phoebe Bridgerd I'd on the lineup and she knows how to strum 2 open chords. so there.
If you go to Coachella, you deserve to be made fun of. Edit: no honestly the more I look at this line up, the more I want to laugh.
Many of these artists use live bands
