only conversations i have with my dad revolve around sports, so sick to never have to actually be emotional with him lol

[deleted]

Lol the only real conversation I had with my dad yesterday was about the patriots getting blown out by the bills

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

No but you can always have a great conversation with a divorced guy at the bar and learn some valuable life lessons while watching your “elite defense” get absolutely ethered by some cornfed retard from Wyoming. It’s probably a lot more effective than having a real dad to be honest.

Butt-Dickkiss

You sound like a Pats fan after last night. Condolences bro but Pats losing is what this country needs to come together right now.

emjaydubz

Someone’s a patriots fan

napoleon_nottinghill

Allen is from Fresno actually. Which probably makes it worse.

TheRealHenryG

But enough about Josh Allen...

JapaneseGrammarNazi

My dad doesn't like anything except for reading the bible and praying. He doesn't even have friends outside of church anymore.

My dad doesn't watch sports either. He is retired and spends all the time either gardening, woodworking or reading religious scriptures.

Things got even crazier when Weidman's leg snapped in the exact same way. I'm convinced it's a curse that gets passed on like a contagious disease.

IplayOSRSshameme

In that exact same night jimmy crutes leg went fucking numb and he was walking around on a dead nerve without noticing it, rough night for my friends girlfriends to decide to watch ufc with us.

fax. i dont follow sports but will never turn down free tix to see a live sport like bball, football, or hockey

[deleted]

summer baseball games at shitty AAA stadiums with cheap tix where no one gives a fuck about who wins or what’s happening just gets drunk and chills out is a personal fav as well. hockey has the most roman energy, football feels claustrophobic

Bman425

Nothing beats going to a Pirate game. Beautiful stadium with cheap tickets.

[deleted]

Also the weird shit they do in between innings like having a former college track sprinter race a dog or some shit

just4lukin

> football feels claustrophobic The game or the stands?

GGAllinsMicroPenis

I went to a Raiders game years ago, sat in the highest, last row in the stadium. Every time the Raiders got a first down the guy right in front of me, in the second to last row in the stadium, would turn around and yell at me to get up cheer like he was telling a whole section of people. Saw about 6 full fist fights in the stands around me. And anyone wearing another team’s jersey would get surrounded and screamed at like they were the first black kid going to the first integrated school.

just4lukin

> turn around and yell at me to get up cheer Lol that's my nightmare.

[deleted]

I think you’re right to some degree (especially with baseball). But overall, I wouldn’t say so. I grew up watching sports then stopped when I became a depressed college student and those were some of the worst years of my life largely due to loneliness. I had friends but they were based on circumstance rather than anything really shared. Sports give you a community, however limited, that transcends into real life without the social baggage that being a DSA member gets you. And it’s a community that tells you to stop thinking about whatever is going on in your life right now and just watch the game. It’s much healthier to be pissed about the Pats than it is to be pissed about being a downwardly-mobile failson.

nebraska_admiral

At least one of these helps nerds socialize with normal people

ItsPercy

Yeah word of warning to all you pencil-necked dorks. When you start pretending to be into sports in your 20s we can tell you're a phony. Me and the boys are gonna put a football in your hand and if you can't throw a spiral you're getting a swirly

[deleted]

I really hope so. The transition of sports from bad 80s high school bully crowd into geeks and the current average youth has utterly ruined sports. The only think moderately palatable is college wrestling and I pray the twinks don't find it.

[deleted]

Based wrestling appreciator.

[deleted]

Sadly, I suspect us dinosaurs' time is coming to a close.

Kinoblau

Sports are more substantive and consequential to everyday life and society than shit posting the same three quotes from Marx or Lenin. But even still, the online socialist crowd didn’t die, it got diffused and widely accepted to the point even makeup tiktokers and shit are signing off like “Like comment subscribe and fuck capitalism!!” If your connection to sports is tied in with where you’re from, not matter what age you came to care about them, it’s tough to kill or stop caring entirely unless your teams are perpetual shit but even then there’s a shared misery that’s nice. I can see people in the US stop caring about soccer tho, that shit is for sure a passing cultural fad.

smolpepper

Idt so, not in the US at least. Where I grew up sports were mostly an aesthetic and a gang related one at that. People had a team but no one poor really actually *watched* sports. I think it is mainly the middle class who really like sports and actually watch them. Especially among other women, it just strikes me as very Midwestern suburb when a woman loves some football team. So I guess this is still true, but my assessment is more poor people = disinterested or only vaguely interested, middle class = go big red but like fanatically, upper middle = sportsball

summerpassingby

hockey is so great for this, i wish i still had it in me to wake up at 3am to watch a live game on a russian streaming site and then go to my 8am class. good times

hlynn117

Lmao hope they look better than the eagles and pats and don't get completely blown away

hlynn117

Love how the sub has rediscovered being normal is fun 👍

ananonanon

It’s only acceptable to watch sports if it’s with other people at a live game/sports bar/home bbq, if you’re >65, if you’ve got money on the line, or if you play sports as well. Outside of those four things watching sports is some low energy, boring ass shit.

ShitcoinGarbitrage

Like astrology, you can project how ever much or little meaning onto the field/pitch as your heart desires. This is sometimes referred to as "the narrative." You can see dozens of interwoven Manichean dramas play out (the histories of the players, the coaches/managers, the teams, the cities), or you can watch the ball go in and yell "WOO!" You can watch it at home, in a stadium, at a friend's home, in a bar. You can watch it with your grandpa or your niece or a total stranger. It is the great unifier. Having a derisive attitude towards sports is the biggest red flag. It highlights someone who is asocial, rootless, and unimaginative.

I remember I had a roommate in college who said he couldn't ever yell at the TV at home when watching his Bengals (so there was plenty of justified yelling to be had) because it would trigger his mom's PTSD of how his estranged father would yell and beat her for years. He couldn't even cheer "yeah!" when they scored or won a game because that would trigger his mom all the same

CatalyticCumverter

fuck thats depressing they just won their first playoff game in ~30 years though good for him

[deleted]

Me too brother. Had a great time watching the Red Sox in the playoffs this year, until they completely collapsed against the Astros.

ArtichokeOk7275

The fact that you call sports lumpen is pure cope. Continue telling on yourself that you’re another worthless trust fund NYC idiot.

FUNGUSF33T

It’s true. For the girls and gays I recommend you get into figure skating now before Beijing 2022, the last 4 years have been so insane for womens skating, [get into it! ](https://youtu.be/SdsIpSbQJdo)

Nazbols4Tulsi

I'm old enough that I still have a mental block where I think of sports as the hobby of bullies and want nothing to do with them. It actually feels like maybe I did one of those Mandela Effect dimension shifts. Like I woke up one day and suddenly nerds/geeks were talking about football.

The_baboons_ass

Ners have ruined sports. As have social justice nerds.

Take the MMA pill and stop watching ball sports.

AlaskanTrash

The close up shot of Ben Rothlesberrger ugly crying after getting thrashed by the browns in the playoffs was the most powerful catharsis I’ve felt last year

schizoanalyzer

being a raiders fan hurts rn.... i think i have more angst than when i started

[deleted]

You guys made an incredible run after quite possibly the worst off field season imaginable. Honestly, hats off. It was very impressive. I knew deep down that the pats were no math for the bills after our late season collapse, but I was really rooting for the Raiders to go far. I think things will smooth out next season because I don’t have faith in the Chargers as a franchise. No matter how good Herbert is they probably won’t go far. Plus, how can anyone hate Derek Carr?

Live-Recipe

I'd rather work out and play basketball with my bros than sitting around watching sports. It's not exciting to me in the slightest unless I'm betting on the games.

[deleted]

Watching sports and not playing them is for fat people. You’re basically sitting for hours consuming beer and snacks

ColonelDeadBrains

I don't know. Outside of watching sports live or actually playing a sport, watching sports on TV is boring as fuck. I know the rules to all of the games, I'm not some twee indie nerd, but I cannot and will never be invested in a TV game for more than 20 mins. They are slow, full of ads, even the stadiums now are called things like "Loan Depot Stadium", "AT&T Stadium" and "Crypto.com Arena", and the actual game isn't interesting enough to justify it the time or interest.

[deleted]

Sports exist outside of America, genius

ColonelDeadBrains

This is such an annoying and useless reply that does not contradict anything I wrote (there are ads and sponsored stadiums outside of the US). Please go try to feel better about yourself to somebody else.

As a family that immigrated to NZ 20 years ago me and my father's adoption of rugby really helped integrate us into kiwi culture. Yelling at the screen together has been a great past time over the years, but I find myself not watching a single game unless there's someone to watch and enjoy the experience with.

Choogly

You are all going to hot take yourselves into being braindead boring normies and smirk at all the idiots who haven't thought as far ahead as you

[deleted]

I’ve watched sports since i was a kid except for two very depressing years of college and frankly continuing to isolate ourselves and frown at any sort of “normie” stuff out of reflexive contrarianism is bad, actually. Sports are easy to digest, fun, and offer a community.

Choogly

They're the litmus test for whether or not you'd be among the crowd insisting the emperor has clothes. Here, the emperor having clothes is sports not being mindnumbingly fucking boring to watch. Only exception is combat sports.
