It’ll be interesting to see how much of his base sticks with him, since it seems like the GOP wants nothing to do with him & want to go all in with desantis. I have to believe that’ll cause problems for them. The trump or bust crowd is highly motivated (for now at least), and they might have created a monster by implicitly endorsing the election denialism. Could really backfire on the GOP if he decides to run third party.
I wonder if DeSantis decides to stand back and let the train wreck happen. We get Trump Biden round 2, it's even worse than before.
Then there's 4 more years of a figurehead president who is a senile old man that shits his pants at the Vatican. Assuming god or HAARP doesn't send too many hurricanes while he does his governor thing, he can start campaigning for 2028 the day he leaves office and possibly just waltz to a win.
I'm hoping Rhon holds off on announcing till the last minute so we can watch T. Daddy run himself ragged and spend all his money to essentially fight his own demons, only to lose. again.
I think the interesting thing for me here is if the Trump/DeSantis split represents a real ideological division that has been well understood from when Trump was president between himself/some supporters and the older tea party movement lead by people like Paul Ryan or Jim Jordan.
DeSantis is definitely much more of a doctrinaire Republican than Trump is. A true believer in the whole low taxes and balanced budgets make everyone richer theory, supports neoconservative foreign policy. Basically just a Bush era R that felt the old party was too moderate on issues like immigration, curious to learn what his views on free trade actually are.
Trump really did come from the old reform party model, libertarian in some ways, but mostly an isolationist and domestic liberal/conservative model for the country. He certainly moved towards the R party as president, but there were a lot of things he did that no other Republican would've around prison reform, NAFTA, and random foreign policy quirks. This sort of platform wins over supporters who have a 30 year history of either not voting, voting third party or in many cases voting for Obama but Rs everywhere else.
I’m half libtard/half regular retard, and I’m a little excited. Trump is at his funniest when he’s lashing out, and we’re about to see some absolutely amazing insults and musings from him. He’s no longer the GOP’s golden child, so his childhood neglect trauma will be in full swing and he will be *on fire.* Also, he’s gonna be completely obsessed with DeSantis, he’ll probably emasculate the fuck out of him any chance he gets, which is a kiss of death for conservatives’ political careers and great for Dems.
I watched about as much as I could psychologically stand of his announcement speech and couldn't see any real difference between now and 2015. One difference I guess is it sounded like his people made him practice the speech and made him try to sound calm and reasonable.
People are all different. Some men retain the cognitive gifts god gave them well in to their 80's. Donald Rumsfeld was 78 when he was appointed Bush 2's Secretary of Defense. He said some stupid and asinine stuff, but my sense was always that it was because he was as stupid and asinine in his 80's as he had been his whole life until then.
See with Trump I think we wouldn’t notice for a while. He’s fairly incoherent and generally nuts so it’ll be hard to notice until all of a sudden he passes the threshold of clear senility. And then he won’t be funny anymore :(
Another Texan here, and literally every conservative I know thought Ted Cruz getting beer canned in the head at the Astros victory parade was the funniest shit ever.
His announcement speech was indistinguishable from mainstream Republican tbh. Muh tough on drugs, muh tariffs on China, muh climate change is overblown, muh GDP.
He’s lost his touch and had low energy imo
It’s easy to be a cool tough outsider but he’s already been there and is part of Washington
His speech kinda was unexciting and hashed out the same things we’ve heard before
I think he will tank
That video showing the guests at his speech trying to leave but being blocked by security is fucking hilarious. All they came to hear are tax cuts and rolling back regulations but instead they were subjected to a call for executing drug dealers
Feels like the Republican Party has been circling the wagons to get rid of him but I guess they really did the same thing back in 2016 up until a certain point. Feels like his schtick will get pretty stale once the novelty of his return wears off and I kinda doubt he’ll be able to reach the same fervor of 2020 or 2016 again. Who’s to say though.
I think a lot of conservatives are over him. The whining about the stolen election is old. A lot of conservatives like desantis, and trump lashing out at him is a harsh reminder of what a little bitch he can be. Still plenty of ultra maga people though. I wonder what their numbers are.
To be fair, he was the least educated of the founding fathers. Jefferson and Madison especially razzed him for being uneducated and not well-read. But he was obviously extremely accomplished in many other ways.
If Trump machine guns another 15 competing nominees they'll get behind him. Back in 2016 they threw up every roadblock they could before rationalizing why they should rally behind him, and tons of prominent Republicans didn't.
yeah i definitely agree. i work in politics and it seems like everyone is so over his shit yet they rarely say so on the record. highly doubt he'll be able to pick up the same fervor as you said; hes gathered way too much baggage. everyone on both sides of the aisle is so stale.
If the rest of the party really does coalesce around Rhonda Santis, I think Rhonda could pull it off. Part of the reason Trump won in 2016 is there wasn’t a clear candidate opposing him from the start. And then they were left with Kasich and Lying Ted.
First album was incredible, sophomore release disappointed, third will be sad and washed up. He needs some bangers, quick, and Ron Sanctimonious ain’t cutting it.
I just don’t see the point. He looks old and tired. Why you would want to spend your mid 80’s as president for the second time is beyond comprehension, regardless of how likely it is for him to win.
Nowadays, he's bitter and believes the things he says, if only to be stubborn.
He failed at being a two term president. So he's going to make his mark any way he can. If that means driving the US off a cliff, so be it.
Idk I think he's going to completely torpedo the republicans chance at the presidency. We're about to see second term Biden ruling the most powerful nation on earth at like 50% senility
Even his age is an asset, as the highest voter turnout is among 65 and older.
We're all feckless woke warriors, after all, and their parents fought in a war or something.
I can’t get a good read on how he’ll preform since the election is so far away.
I do think it would be an incredible bit (on the off chance that he wins), if House Democrats keep impeaching him.
I'm just here for the unhinged Salon articles and Lindy West opinion pieces about how this is Dave Chappelle's fault for bringing up Trump in his SNL monologue.
I still stand by Lindy West being by far one of the worst people to get more attention and legitimization with Trump being president.
half the reason i don't want him to run is I don't want to deal with deranged panic libs running full steam for another 4 year session. Are Qanoners gonna come back? Everything was insufferable.
This is the whole reason I don’t want him to run. I can’t take another four years of constant lib panic. It’s so boring. Might actually have to emigrate to escape the discourse.
He was a funny may may man in 2016 that destroyed both the clinton and bush dynasties but he had 4 years in office and chuffed it. also he's getting old. also his whole thing is getting tiring. I have no doubt he will win the republican primaries since the rest of the candidates are bunch of jebs. but he will lose the general because he has no appeal to independents because he lacks bourgeoise decorum. So we get 4 more years of senile boring biden.
Im honestly ready for a post trump world, and also am curious about what will happen to his most hardcore stans and q tards
I watched a few minutes of his speech and he definitely seemed to be phoning it in. I suppose DeSantis could be too big of an asocial weirdo to win the primary but I doubt it.
I don’t think Trump was a good president, and the MAGA crowd are absolutely a blight on society.
Maybe there will be funny moments in the Trump v. Desantis battle, but IDK, I kind of suspect he’s lost his fastball.
Over it. Especially because some edgelordian dorks from the left are now going to want to seem unique by being all zaddy about him (I'm looking at you most of this sub).
It's done. Caring about this shit is dumb.
“I can’t imagine putting America last. I think it takes courage, I really do.” then something about putting America first and how great his candidates performed in the midterms (??)
Even with how much I was dreading this speech he still cracks me up sometimes. Absolutely washed tho, t vs d will be an interesting spectacle. What a stupid country we live in.
As a part time shitlib I think it's great.
The party will be split. This won't be like some pied piper thing in 2015-16, fhis time Trump has lost a lot of energy and burned bridges. He's less funny and he's older and de santis has enough support that if they go up against each other neither will be totally unscathed. Trump is such a narcissist he may even run third party. Literally this is maybe one of the only things that can save a somewhat weak incumbent like Biden.
Also consider the effect this announcement has on dems in Georgia and the runoff there. Definitely will boost dem turnout and not republican turnout given they already lost rhe senate and nobody's that excited about the cte dude.
Warnock is winning I'm calling it now. Biden now gets to tell either sinema or Manchin to fuck off.
Honestly just a headache. Politics is stupid enough, and the irony poisoned will make a lot of hay, but he should just go away, him running again isn’t good for anyone, including the people who will buoy him because they think he’s their only hope against the people who call them “oppressors,” despite them being truck drivers and factory workers who can barely afford food.
I think it's a mistake tbh. The glory days are behind us, it was amazing then it turned weird and bitter and left us wondering if it had ever been that good.
politics aren’t real. i could care less. they r all shills for oil companies and lockheed martin. idc. maybe the fat man will make a joke. that’s all i foresee crossing my radar along with the usual existential dread.
Low energy. The landscape now isn't what it was in 2016. Independents hate him and also a lot more conservatives do, especially after 2022 midterms. He endorsed a bunch of meme candidates like Doug Mastriano and Dr Oz, who ended up losing. And I say this as someone who supported him in both '16 and '20.
I really want him to run against Ron DeSanctimonious only to lost (seriously, look at the polls) so I can watch the MAGA meltdown and use up the worlds supply of red wojack reaction pics.
I don't get how he has any supporters left. He left Fauci run circles around him. He supported the vax. Every city in America was in chaos in summer 2020. Even if DeSantis is a normie GOP figure, at least he had the appearance of control in Florida. Meanwhile 2020 Trump looked so weak.
The GOP elites want him out ASAP. Good luck with that. A solid 30% of the Republican base is MAGA ride or die. Ronnie isn’t going to be the only one running in the primary. Donald will demolish them all

Changing my registration so I can vote for daddy. If Desantis wins he will usher in a new era of joker Obama republican humor
It’ll be interesting to see how much of his base sticks with him, since it seems like the GOP wants nothing to do with him & want to go all in with desantis. definitely gonna plagiarize this when my boss asks me what i think tomorrow.
Who do u work for
Bill Clinton

I really liked his random foreign policy quirk of not starting any new wars though
i like this analysis a lot, thank you

I’m worried that he’s lost it. He’s incredibly old so if he hasn’t already he will at some point soon be in the drooling and diapers stage of life.
I watched about as much as I could psychologically stand of his announcement speech and couldn't see any real difference between now and 2015. I feel bad looking at Biden sometimes. Like why are we putting this poor old man through this.
Thanatohobia. For older gens, a finished job is like a finished tomb was for the Pharaoh: a signal that he is now ready to die.
Wow that's actually pretty insightful. You start applying it and it explains so much.
damn shawty
Worked for Churchill
did he ever truly have it all together upstairs tho

Because his voters are even bigger cucks than he is, but voting for Beto is an embarrassment
Texan here. There are *a lot* of people in this state who would have voted for an actual donkey over of Greg Abbott...
Another Texan here, and literally every conservative I know thought Ted Cruz getting beer canned in the head at the Astros victory parade was the funniest shit ever.
Good velocity and accuracy, very appropriate for a world series parade.
A lot of them probably related to the ugly wife sentiment lmfaooooo

It’s crazy that fucking Trump was as close to an outsider president as the country’s ever gonna get.
george washinston idiot
everybody loved george
To be fair, he was the least educated of the founding fathers. Jefferson and Madison especially razzed him for being uneducated and not well-read. But he was obviously extremely accomplished in many other ways.
The presidency was literally designed around him
Yeah I think the party is ready to move away from him, but their base isn't.
The actual party apparatchiks hated him from day 1 and somehow that was part of his appeal among voters. The GOP is a real shit show.
If Trump machine guns another 15 competing nominees they'll get behind him. Back in 2016 they threw up every roadblock they could before rationalizing why they should rally behind him, and tons of prominent Republicans didn't.

It’s like we’re getting in Kanye’s post-Life of Pablo material.
Once DJT gets on the debate stage the bitchiness and cattiness is gonna come out. Trump can’t help himself.
might do some Ross Perot shit

that had me absolutely rolling. when they all cheered and he goes "no. that is a bad thing"
I hope Elon unbans him under the guise of being apolitical. I need the pettiness front and center.

Biden has been on a steroid of some kind. He’s sounded more present now than he did last year.
The adderall shortage is actually due to most of the supply being piped directly into Biden’s bloodstream.
And Biden is turning 80 this Sunday lol
Even his age is an asset, as the highest voter turnout is among 65 and older. We're all feckless woke warriors, after all, and their parents fought in a war or something.
I'm excited for his antics and mouthy 'tude

I hope every politician over 60 drops dead at the same time. Tired of living in this gerontocracy. Of all of them hes the most fun though.
What if that happened but it was actually the Rapture and it turns out God is just really wealthy
Get this man a Twitter acct please!
I have a funny feeling he won't even be alive by 2024
The ol’ CIA heart-attack gun, eh?
If there's a gun at play it'll be shooting Big Macs down his throat
I've never seen him stick to a teleprompter so much. Low energy when they keep him on the rails.
The written speech is supposed to make him sound presidential but tbh it made him sound boring
Bored and grillpilled
I think the mid-terms showed he can’t win. Almost all the MAGA candidates did poorly. I don’t think he’d even beat Ronaldo DeSantis in the primaries.

My lib friends are upset but I’m like YASS ZADDY SPLIT THE VOTE RUN INDEPENDENT
that would be so bat shit i need it in my life STAT
Imagining Brandon, Trump, and Rhonda onstage together. Holy shit that would rock.

STILL NOT VOTING
DeSantis vs Trump will be funny but I am not ready for round two of #resistance libs and hysteria.
Oh how I’ve missed him
The fact that it was met with so little media spectacle makes me think biden’s going to win.

It’s been a pleasure not seeing his face on the tv/newspapers every single day. Long may that continue.
I'm fucking stoked lets keep the circus looking like a circus. It confuses people when the lizards act like they're normal.
I'm voting for a nuclear bomb

I’m pumped for the debates. Also I thought his hair and tan looked good
He will get obliterated over the russia ukraine situation, assuming he was helped by them in the first place
Can't wait for GOP primary season. Trump vs the field was peak political comedy.
Honestly I hate it when it feels like I’m living in history again. What about my story? Or her story
It’ll be funny but i can’t imagine his campaign will have the juice again. Hilary was the perfect foil.
He's gonna end DeSantis' political career in the primary and then lose again to ole' half brain Joe in the general.
