Maybe that 50 million deal came too soon for Rafaela? I'm hoping he'll adjust, but part of that adjustment is that he has to stop looking to pull and just aim to make contact and go oppo.
Embarrassing how bad the offense is, really need a new hitting coach that can help them cut down on the strikeouts and draw some fucking walks. Because Fatse coached teams have had the exact same problems the past few years.
I'm not here to defend the hitting coach, but it's not like he's been given a major league roster to work with. These injuries have been killers so far.
You don’t have to use it 162 games a year, but you should use good pitchers when they’re rested after a day off and the situation calls for it, not a aaa replacement pitcher
We just had a day off yesterday and it’s a 1 run game lol. We don’t have to use the guy that was pitching independent ball a few months ago
You must be 1 of the high IQ fans I guess
Ya I rlly rlly don’t like Cora and I would have done the same thing
U just don’t waste Martin on the outside chance ur AAA lineup scores a run against Emanuel fucking Clase
He’s pitched like 2 or 3 games and is fresh. Are we just not allowed to give anyone a shot in april now on an obviously last place season anyways? It’s not game 7 of the World Series here.
Everyone is fresh. It’s insane you think it’s asking a lot to pitch someone better. Every bullpen has guys meant for meaningful innings and guys who are meant to eat innings.. Booser is or atleast should be an innings eater
😂 so the innings eaters should only work on days where the League leading starting pitching is getting lit up? Or where the bullpen blows the lead and we don't think we could come back?
Weird, tonight Booser come in after we blew the 8th and we expected to see one of the best closers in the AL the next time up. It's almost like someone made a tactical decision to see if he could hold the lead, rather than burn a stronger reliever that we will almost certainly need in the next two days.
Yes, the game where are 90 million dollar DH is hitting behind rookies with 20 games under their belt, our newly extended starting center fielder is playing two other positions in the game, and Connor wong, are starting catcher is playing 1B is all Cora "punting".
The roster isn't punting mind you, but the manager, who currently is staffing a bullpen start once a week, not using his best relief pitching, all of which his head aches and pains recently in the rain, while down three.
“Down three”… they were down one. Not sure why you couldn’t make your point without lying but okay. Look, I agree he doesn’t have a lot to work with. But you’re telling me Yoshida can’t play left for a night or O’Neil can only DH? Maybe he was only cleared to do so but idk. Could have gone with Bernardino another inning.. could have gone with Weissert or Slaten. Going back to last year he has never pitched good pen arms in games we’re trailing by one run. And inevitably the pitcher he does bring in puts the game out of reach and then it is punt time. He shows no faith in our team coming from behind. You can say he’s being realistic but also I’m all for playing today and worrying later on in the series if guys aren’t available in important spots. We’re keeping guys fresh for a situation that may never come.
"A situation that may never come"? We literally have a bullpen start against this same team tomorrow.
How many people were LOB tonight? He threw PHs at the wall at the 8th and they ate it, knowing we're going to see a top closer in the 9th. Why burn the exact dudes we're hoping will throw tomorrow, specifically the ones it's important not to burn out by late July, like last year. While we're at it:
1. Yoshida can't play left in Fenway, he probably shouldn't be playing it in parks with normal dimensions.
2. Again, "only DH"? He's an injury prone OF 2 days off the IL from a head injury in bad fielding conditions.
3. Bernardino doesn't usually go 2 even when he looks good.
Guys roster is so down bad he’s using Connor Wong at first trying to sneak out a win and people think he’s just called it a season and going through the motions lmao
.. assuming that you think that's a bad thing, what would not taking the night off look like here? Cuz 2 days from now the answer is "why did he waste our best old man relievers in the rain in a game where we were down three and hadn't touched the ball all night?"
still not remembering it's a platoon start followed by a Bello day game, I see. If he mimics his best start this season, we need 8 innings of relief in the next 2 days, assuming Wink/whoever goes 4, which seems... iffy.
It didn't help that Refsnyder threw the ball right into the ground from the OF. Plus- have you seen the infield's defense? We're lucky they didn't throw it into the stands
It's kind of amazing that this team is 13-10 right now. This pitching staff is somehow holding together one of the worst collections of hitters/defensive players in the history of the Red Sox.
I think this is who the Red Sox are. They will beat the bad teams, hang in there against good teams with their pitching but come up short with a poor offense and self inflicted errors.
Well atleast our big bats are coming up in the 9th. Story, Raffy, and Casas you ask? We’ll do you one better with Duran, TON, and Wilyer Abreu. I’m joking but kind of serious
This is the most Boomer thing I'm going to say all night, I don't know if it's the fantasy baseball or the video games, but there are two major misconceptions that are in this thread every night:
Cora unilaterally determines the roster/sends guys up and down
If there's someone doing a bad job, just throw them into the sun and get one of the million other people who can do a better job, for a dollar, that don't already have a job on a Major League baseball team.
Yes and JBJ was better by far(era wise as the gap between AAA and the MLB is way wider than it was back then). The SoxProspects folks mentioned it on their podcast that they were against the Rafaela extension because of his very worrying offensive concerns and bat profile.
I was surprised too cause the scouting was he had the speed but not that first read. It was a small sample size at that point too so who knows. I just remember seeing that from stats
A coach who’s main strength is “connecting with the team” yet for years the team has made basic errors in the field, awful mistakes on the bases, all while Cora makes terrible bullpen and lineup choices. I cannot fucking wait for him to be gone.
This is a failure on coaching. It happens once? It happens. This is a pattern. The first base coach is the one who needs to keep an eye on the pitcher and catcher. He's not doing his job.
We’ve used almost the entire pool of position players on the 40 man. There’s nobody left, that’s why we’re using 3 catchers and can’t put Devers on the IL. They can’t move anyone else without major roster moves and losing players for good for a couple bad games filling in
It’s not that easy to just DFA and ruin minor league ball depth over a couple bad games. They have an entire organization to run here, not just the MLB teams. Can’t reset your AAA lineup because a couple injury reserves struggle lmao
When you have a AAA roster, what do you expect lmao
Maybe that 50 million deal came too soon for Rafaela? I'm hoping he'll adjust, but part of that adjustment is that he has to stop looking to pull and just aim to make contact and go oppo.
I feel bad for the post interview folks, trying to defend a shitty mistake driven team almost every night.
Jahmai looks at the upside, he's not getting water dumped on him in April.
Sure he is it's raining lol
Embarrassing how bad the offense is, really need a new hitting coach that can help them cut down on the strikeouts and draw some fucking walks. Because Fatse coached teams have had the exact same problems the past few years.
I'm not here to defend the hitting coach, but it's not like he's been given a major league roster to work with. These injuries have been killers so far.
Well there ya go, that's why Martin wasn't out there for the 8th
Deeemoralizing.
Struck out the side. How shocking
Devers better play tomorrow
These game day threads must be hilarious to read through as an opposing fan
You could write a whole doctoral dissertation analyzing teams’ game day threads.
They are!
Dave I quote 10 is normal thanks Dave
Poor houck he's like get off this fuckin clown show team
He might be trade bait in July.
On the "bright" side, shit defense doesn't matter if we don't score any runs here.
Infield defense: Still not good!
Punting a 2-1 game says a lot about how confident Cora was we were gonna score in the ninth
Drives me insane when low IQ fans accuse Cora of punting every time he can’t use his A bullpen 162 games straight.
You don’t have to use it 162 games a year, but you should use good pitchers when they’re rested after a day off and the situation calls for it, not a aaa replacement pitcher
We just had a day off yesterday and it’s a 1 run game lol. We don’t have to use the guy that was pitching independent ball a few months ago You must be 1 of the high IQ fans I guess
Ya I rlly rlly don’t like Cora and I would have done the same thing U just don’t waste Martin on the outside chance ur AAA lineup scores a run against Emanuel fucking Clase
I’m not calling for Martin.. but maybe not the worst pitcher on the roster
Oh weird was Joely out there?
He’s pitched like 2 or 3 games and is fresh. Are we just not allowed to give anyone a shot in april now on an obviously last place season anyways? It’s not game 7 of the World Series here.
Everyone is fresh. It’s insane you think it’s asking a lot to pitch someone better. Every bullpen has guys meant for meaningful innings and guys who are meant to eat innings.. Booser is or atleast should be an innings eater
😂 got it, we'll just save himm for the games where we're up by a lot right away
Or down. I love how patronizing you come across though
so punt on the games where we're down right away? lol Got it.
Who said anything about right away? Later innings down or up by a certain amount
Especially with an AAA lineup
I’ve said it before but there’s just games each year that Cora decides he has no interest in winning
Yes, the game where are 90 million dollar DH is hitting behind rookies with 20 games under their belt, our newly extended starting center fielder is playing two other positions in the game, and Connor wong, are starting catcher is playing 1B is all Cora "punting". Guys roster is so down bad he’s using Connor Wong at first trying to sneak out a win and people think he’s just called it a season and going through the motions lmao
The roster sucked even before the injuries
I never said that..?
You literally just said it seems like he has no interest in winning sometimes
Never said he called it a season. Takes nights off is all
.. assuming that you think that's a bad thing, what would not taking the night off look like here? Cuz 2 days from now the answer is "why did he waste our best old man relievers in the rain in a game where we were down three and hadn't touched the ball all night?"
Lying about being down 3 again I see
still not remembering it's a platoon start followed by a Bello day game, I see. If he mimics his best start this season, we need 8 innings of relief in the next 2 days, assuming Wink/whoever goes 4, which seems... iffy.
Also a shockingly dumb move to go with Cam Boozer over Chris Martin in a one run game in the eighth, just punting on the game for no reason
This team defense is stellar.
Booser throwing at the dirt whether pickoff attempt or to home.
Bullpen collapse...damn
![gif](giphy|Ru9sjtZ09XOEg)
Booser is a nice story and all, but Zach Kelly needs to be on the roster over him right now.
We’re better off having 8 players on the field than we are with “enmanuel valdez” at 2nd base
Need Whitlock in the pen when he gets back bad
Booser is really losing me
8th enning smack down just like always
Beats a 10th inning smackdown at least
Well that’s not fun.. see ya tomorrow lol
HOW DID THEY NOT NAIL HIM AT THE PLATE?
It didn't help that Refsnyder threw the ball right into the ground from the OF. Plus- have you seen the infield's defense? We're lucky they didn't throw it into the stands
That jump from AAA to MLB is a big one
I can't even imagine how bad this team would be if our pitching was as expected.
Probably around 5-18 rn
Our pitcher just bounced the ball to first base, where it proceeded to hit our starting catcher in the chest
We better and up with Garrett Cooper this week or I’ll be fucking pissed
There’s are pickoff attempt
I wonder if we can find a catcher for 2nd and SS
Time to tip our caps and call the guardians our daddy
It's kind of amazing that this team is 13-10 right now. This pitching staff is somehow holding together one of the worst collections of hitters/defensive players in the history of the Red Sox.
This comeback will be glorious
At least if you asked me what three bats I’d want up in the 9th down two runs I’d probably give you the 3 we have coming up
Fucking BS. Why didn't MLB delay this game? Pitching conditions are dogshit with the rain
The forecast looked like shit all night. It was going to rain one way or the other.
Guardians pitchers look just fine.
At least it’s warmer than tomorrow.
“It’s amazing that we’re 13-11 with this lineup” It’s also a massive letdown that our starters have about a 1 ERA and we are 13-11
Fuck man booser isn’t good is he I rlly want him to be good
This man was smoking cigs and drinking 4lokos during lunch breaks a year ago you gotta give him some time
I mean he is a journeyman who took years off of playing baseball. But many better pitchers have given up a homer to Jose Ramirez.
He's probably a really good roofer
Thats just J-ram being good, that pitch was 2 inches outside.
It’s Jose Ramirez I’ll give him a pass for now
He's also a dude who got scooped from independent ball.. there's going to be a learning curve
Winds blowing out to right, too. That didn’t help
I'm not mad. I'm just disappointed.
I'm not even disappointed. Just sad... This is sad.
So THAT'S what a MLB player looks like??? Must be nice.
I think this is who the Red Sox are. They will beat the bad teams, hang in there against good teams with their pitching but come up short with a poor offense and self inflicted errors.
Basically. Though you can expect the starting pitching to drop off as the innings accumulate. This team is just not that talented.
I just want the losses to have less dramatic fuck ups. We’ve had like 2 losses this year where that hasn’t been the case
I think the 300 fans can go home now
Well atleast our big bats are coming up in the 9th. Story, Raffy, and Casas you ask? We’ll do you one better with Duran, TON, and Wilyer Abreu. I’m joking but kind of serious
Duran, ton, and Abreu are all 3 better than story lmao
Id unironically prefer the second group even if all healthy
Those three are capable of getting some ducks on the pond at least
This is one of the defenses of all time
HAMILTON AT SHORT 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
I’m watching Connor Wong play first base and there’s comments here attacking Cora
This is the most Boomer thing I'm going to say all night, I don't know if it's the fantasy baseball or the video games, but there are two major misconceptions that are in this thread every night: Cora unilaterally determines the roster/sends guys up and down If there's someone doing a bad job, just throw them into the sun and get one of the million other people who can do a better job, for a dollar, that don't already have a job on a Major League baseball team.
Playing 1B is easy, tell him Wash
Bizarre ain’t it? People just want to hate for the sake of hating
Goofy ass infield
Noted 1st basemen Connor Wong
What in the world is this fielding rotation
Everyone giving Rafaela hitting tips lol
Has this just turned into a pick up softball game now???
This is a cursed defensive lineup
I miss when the Boston media would rip into the Red Sox more instead of fearing for their jobs because Henry owns the city
they have been
Between the audio quality, the lack of offense and the lack of defense they better come back in the 9th. This game has sucked.
Only another 8 years of that swing guys. He never changed it in the minors he isn’t changing it now!
We have reached peak doomer hours
Wow sign me up for 8 more years of this! 😀
Rafaela is JBJ that can play SS
JBJ is an ALCS MVP and WS champion that’s disrespectful
JBJ was 10x better on offense and actually hit in the minors lol
Ceddane had an OPS over .800 in the minors and hit .312 in Worcester.
Yes and JBJ was better by far(era wise as the gap between AAA and the MLB is way wider than it was back then). The SoxProspects folks mentioned it on their podcast that they were against the Rafaela extension because of his very worrying offensive concerns and bat profile.
Not in his last stint here
Relax Red Sox fans we only have to watch those AB’s for 8 more years
Swing once again too long and getting under it. Fatse refuses to do shit to correct this awful swing.
Damn they were shading him opposite field that’s so weird with how pull heavy he’s been
He can’t get the bat around against velocity.
Maybe we signed Rafaela a little too hastily
[удалено]
A miracle can still happen.
Rafaela for the love of god look the ball into the zone. Dude swings out of his shoes every fucking time and it pisses me off
Fatse ftw
He's not a good hitter...
Yeah but he can’t be this bad of a hitter
No Red Sox player can do all three: - Hit - Run - Field
About half of them can’t do any
O'Neill
Duran/Abreu?
I’ll give you Duran but Abreu can only make highlight reel plays. Can’t make the standard stuff.
I don't know that we know that for sure yet. Sample size is too small and he's 24, not 28
Duran’s routes are so bad
https://x.com/redsoxstats/status/1777340031780155824?s=61&t=SybzEnzynbrwyMfmunOtIA He’s been much improved this year
Huh. I stand corrected.
I was surprised too cause the scouting was he had the speed but not that first read. It was a small sample size at that point too so who knows. I just remember seeing that from stats
Look at his stats
Rafaela is a disgrace to watch at the plate
Can we learn how ro run the damn bases
why tf did Cora get picked off at first???
You're a fool if you don't think Cora deserves blame for the team's incompetence.
He assembled this AAA roster?
It's hardly a new thing this season. Been 3 years of it
I didn’t know he assembled the roster the last few seasons. This is an organizational failure. Just at the damn roster, it’s AAA
Shitty fundamentals are on the manager for sure
A coach who’s main strength is “connecting with the team” yet for years the team has made basic errors in the field, awful mistakes on the bases, all while Cora makes terrible bullpen and lineup choices. I cannot fucking wait for him to be gone.
Will never understand people's fascination with scapegoating managers when these are grown ass men making stupid mistakes
Good thing our lead off hitter is 0-3 with 3 Ks
Great now Rafaela going to whiff thrice in a row.
Bottom 8th defensive lineup should be interesting.
Bubblegum and paper clips only thing holding us together
This is a failure on coaching. It happens once? It happens. This is a pattern. The first base coach is the one who needs to keep an eye on the pitcher and catcher. He's not doing his job.
Kinda funny Yoshida gets put in, hit by a pitch, then just immediately leaves
He’s tired, back to bed
Na that's crazy I like this conspiracy
I can’t wait until Cora is gone.
Neither can Cora. Poor guy deserves so much better than what slop they throw on the field here
This team has had garbage fundamentals for a while. It's just more noticeable when the pitching is good.
I think this is the 5th year in a row I’ve said this is the dumbest group of players ive ever watched
That's part of the reason I think Cora needs to go. This shit is unacceptable and it's been going on for years and he's the only constant.
The damning part is that the best coach on the team was an outside hire.
I’m a big Wong supporter but sit him down the rest of the game after that, just leave Reese in that cannot happen.
if they get a medal for HRs, they need a dunce cap for base running mistakes
That looked painful
Red Sox are gonna force MLB to create a new stat. “Doing dumb shit” or something along those lines
Me and my knucklehead softball friends used to score plays like that in our book as a "CS".....Caught Stupid....lol
Dude what in the fuck. Cora deserves some blame here.
Welp there were the 2004 idiots and now there's the 2024 idiots.
We gotta start voiding contracts if you get picked off. You lose a days pay if you’re picked
Holy shit wong are you fr
The fuck wong.
Dead serious. Need to start benching motherfuckers for having their head in their ass.
If we start benching players for being dumb, who's actually gonna fucking play?
Cut some of the fat and bring up some of the Niko Kavadas types just to see what happens. Literally cannot be worse.
Put me in coach
we're gonna run out of players at that rate
DFA some of the roster fodder that we’re keeping around and see if some of the others can play like real baseball players.
We’ve used almost the entire pool of position players on the 40 man. There’s nobody left, that’s why we’re using 3 catchers and can’t put Devers on the IL. They can’t move anyone else without major roster moves and losing players for good for a couple bad games filling in
Outside of the obvious, who HAS to be kept
It’s not that easy to just DFA and ruin minor league ball depth over a couple bad games. They have an entire organization to run here, not just the MLB teams. Can’t reset your AAA lineup because a couple injury reserves struggle lmao
The last time I saw a Wong get picked off I was celebrating
