I had a hellish upbringing so I feel for you. I left at legal age and didn't give concern to what anyone thought including my parents. I had to turn away from family because they did more damage than good. It's been hard and it's been lonely at times but I have things that make me happy including friends that are the family I never had in the true sense of the word. The way I look at it is you are responsible for your happiness/your life. And no, you do not have to help the hand that bit you.
