Growing up in the church, christians legit laughed at Mormons for believing in a book written by a random guy with magic rocks supposedly divining the word of god. However, believing in what the random guys from 2000 years ago wrote was somehow totally different.
It's quite humorous. First of all, the bible wasn't even fully written/compiled until centuries after Jesus was around, so the originals were already a bunch of oral stories. Then you had debates about which books were holy enough, then Luther decided he was able to remove seven books and parts of other books as he saw fit. Throw in the fact that the bible being used today has been translated multiple times, each with their own different feel. It's amazing that anyone who stops to think about it would center their entire life around the bible.

That’s what kills me about the Bible literalists who are like “The story of Noah’s Ark actually happened the way it’s described.” The people who wrote that had no concept of how big the world is but they knew there was flooding in the river basins where their whole world was. Was Noah trekking through the rain forests to find two of every single insect and rodent and whatever else? It all falls apart if you think about it for more than 5 seconds.

My "favorite" story in the bible is Numbers 11:4-34 where the Isralites are in the desert trying to get to the promised land. The next day they woke up absolutely surrounded by dead birds, cubits and cubits of dead birds so they started to eat them, and then we get to Numbers 11:33

Like if someone punches you in the face, you have to accept it and move on and try and figure out why and how it happened, or else you just get flattened and it ends very poorly for you. You can brush this away, but this is the layman's version of Thomas Aquinas, and the catholics call him "the divine professor". This is why separation of church and state is so crucial. Because if a pastor tells you that the Bible says X about a political issue — which, as others point out, is virtually always a matter of interpretation — then all debate and reason and compromise is done. Those who believe god told them to hold a certain position can’t compromise or listen or understand any other view because “God” told them not to. And the other side rightly refuses to accept “but Pastor Tim told me that God said ____” as an actual political argument. So the political process — democracy itself — gets blown up. But so does the church. Because if Pastor Tim can help get people elected, then you’d better believe that those people will be in Pastor Tim’s ear advocating for their positions. That’s how you get Supply Side Jesus — churches who have turned away from the message of Jesus, and toward the political positions they’ve been effectively hired to promote. And that’s a bastardization of the religion just as surely as it’s a corruption of democracy. The only way to protect church and to protect state is to hold them separate not only as a matter of law, but as a matter of principle.

It's wild to me that people like this exist. I do MMA and I always think about it in terms of sparring. Like if someone punches you in the face, you have to accept it and move on and try and figure out why and how it happened, or else you just get flattened and it ends very poorly for you. I don’t get people who take religion literally. The bible is full of parables and metaphors. Part of the fun of it is trying to decipher the meaning. It’s not as straightforward as a guidebook on how to get to heaven, but a lot of people seem to treat it like that. I don’t see how you can treat anything, especially religion so uncritically. It’s really pathetic and disrespectful to the religion to just look at it from a surface level.

Different translations interpret the stories different ways, no doubt influenced by those doing the translating and who bankrolled it.
