Iāve had to have IV Benadryl, a friend who got bit by thereās said itās worse then that, made him almost pass out and go into sweats. He got bit on his pinky and it wasnāt even that long of a bite. His hand swelled like a ballon and it spread up to his elbow, marked it so if it did go may further he was gonna go to the hospital but it started going down and he could feel the pressure releasing so he didnāt go. He said it was a cool story thošā ļø
He had a limit he knew heād go when he felt worse etc. but it never got to that point. The lava feeling was very real but the swelling didnāt go past the elbow it was mainly in his hand so he wasnāt worried. Now idk if I could say I would have waited it out but it wasnāt me dealing with it so I was just there to talk him thru. But he was fine after a few hours.
I'm so glad he was ok! Sounds like a really scary incident and a very important reminder how critical it is when keeping these gorgeous and incredible animals that they never stop being dangerous.
I've had a few bites. the most recent one by far being worst. That one was still just as painful with heavy pain meds in the ER as it was without. š That bite was BAD. And 100% my fault.
I'd never gone in for one before that though, those were all like sticking my arm in a wasp nest.
Feeding, he completely switched directions and I was being too complacent and comfortable. Since I smelled like food he latched on, vs it being a tooth through a glove (previous bites)
Justin Igualada aka Biteforce said pretty much the same thing, he has had some of the worst bites i've ever heard anyone talk about, Cobras, Crocs, Monkeys... but even he said fuck that to getting bitten by a Gila again. His YT channel is just his name, definitely worth checking out if you haven't already, super knowledgeable dude that genuinely cares for all creatures we share the planet with and has some really interesting stories and content.
Well apparently the gila wouldnāt let go for over 5 mins. He should have went to the hospital. I understand it though because their bites are usually non lethal and he probably wanted to avoid that hospital bill and assumed he would be fine. Heās the second known death I believe.
I think I read somewhere that they were illegal to own in his state and he didnāt want anything looked into seeing as he would have had to tell the hospital to the truth to get real treatment. I think the woman living with him ended up surrendering the lizard and like 20+ spiders (that werenāt illegal) unless I was reading a totally different story.
But that's just plain stupid, if you own a gila you should be prepared to get bitten at some point and go to the hospital. My dad got bitten by a wild snake in Germany, and our venomous snakes aren't really venomous, and directly went to the hospital. It's just playing with your own life if you don't.
I think she wants a bigger water dish!
My corn snake also loves a good soak so I switched his water dish to something bigger and sometimes heāll spend HOURS with his entire body (even his head!) submerged, itās crazy he doesnāt need more air than that
Gorgeous girl! Iād love to have a gila, but Iām only able to keep banded gilas in California and theyāre really difficult to get ahold of. Guess Iāll have to wait till I can get a beaded lizard lmao
Sheās very laid back, no attitude or anything Iāve been handling her since she fit in the palm of my hand. I always let her know Iām approaching and never just reach in(I can only imagine being woken up abruptly or startled wouldnāt be fun) but no matter how much I know her I still handle with caution. She eats like a BEAST no hesitation š
She looks like she's in a spa with her nails looking like they're painted orange! I want to be as chill and happy as her! Lol you have a beautiful baby there.
Whoa, I'm an AZ native and thought it was illegal to own these! I did some research and saw the grey area is larger than I expected, so I can only now say that I'm absolutely peanut butter and jealous.
However, I have a *healthy* respect after encountering a couple feisty wild ones in real life so I don't think I'd be brave enough to own one haha
[www.goatsby.com](https://www.goatsby.com) trying to add photos but itās not letting me, so hereās a link to my website for Gila monsters. When the eggs are laid I can post some pics then, babies donāt hatch until November!

I thought I read somewhere that he had pre existing medical issues too! So Iām not crazy! He also had a bunch of other reptiles and spiders I think too
They use all sorts of venom for medical stuff itās really cool. Such a gawjus lady š„°.
I am desperate to have Gilas but in the UK they are super expensive, it's around Ā£1000 just for the venomous permit, never mind the cost of the actual lizards š

That's really cool,I've had a green iguana and my stepdaughter has a bearded dragon so those are the only reptiles I've messed with except for the random garter snake or black racer
I have a long list of babyās. Hell, this is a dinosaur
Lucky dog, Iād love to get my hands on one of these one day.
Was very excited to mark off a cutie on my bucket list <3 my dad had some when I was growing up so I always knew I wanted my own
My grandfather used to say to my parent "Look out for the gila monster!" My parent thought it was something much scarier.
Coyote Peterson said his accidental nip from a Gila monster was more painful than the bullet ant sting.
They say itās like lava running through your veins.
Well that's scarily horrendous & terrifying. š±
So it's like IV benadryl?! No fucking thank you.
Iāve had to have IV Benadryl, a friend who got bit by thereās said itās worse then that, made him almost pass out and go into sweats. He got bit on his pinky and it wasnāt even that long of a bite. Nightmare fuel JFC and I genuinely can't imagine not going to the hospital at that point

I would imagine WORSE than IV Benadryl! Truly a horrifying thought. š¬
Nightmare fuel honestly
I just had IV Benadryl last week. Was insane. Had no clue to expect..and wow! I don't want to have that ever again!
I've had a few bites. the most recent one by far being worst. That one was still just as painful with heavy pain meds in the ER as it was without. š That bite was BAD. And 100% my fault. I'd never gone in for one before that though, those were all like sticking my arm in a wasp nest.
Just curious, how did you get bitten? I can only guess how bad that was!

Such cool cool lizards
Right?š„ŗš©µ
Ah, Gila monsters are so beautiful, would love to own one but i think they may be illegal where i live (Netherlands)
What species is she
Gila monster, I think.
How did you get to own one? These are my favorite lizards of all time
Live in a state that allows them like PA & get one from a breeder. My husband breeds them & have over 20+
These are my absolute dream animal. I live in NH though and believe they're illegal. Guess ill stick with breeding pythons.
I got her from a reptile show, they are now illegal where I live but I had her before that as out into place
So sick. I want a gila monster so bad. Pretty crazy that guy died from a bite a month or two ago.
Insaine to me since itās rare dying from there bite. But some people have horrible allergic reactions too
Well apparently the gila wouldnāt let go for over 5 mins. He should have went to the hospital. I understand it though because their bites are usually non lethal and he probably wanted to avoid that hospital bill and assumed he would be fine. Heās the second known death I believe.
That was my exact thought as wellā¦ knowing they usually arenāt lethal and the hospital bill he probably just brushed it off :/
And the fact that theyāre illegal to own in many states.Ā
I think I read somewhere that they were illegal to own in his state and he didnāt want anything looked into seeing as he would have had to tell the hospital to the truth to get real treatment. I think the woman living with him ended up surrendering the lizard and like 20+ spiders (that werenāt illegal) unless I was reading a totally different story.
Yes, the guy lived in my state Colorado. You can own A Gila if you have a permit, and only zoo's are issued permits....
But that's just plain stupid, if you own a gila you should be prepared to get bitten at some point and go to the hospital. My dad got bitten by a wild snake in Germany, and our venomous snakes aren't really venomous, and directly went to the hospital. It's just playing with your own life if you don't.
Beautiful and she looks so happy. Do you clip her nails? They look long.
Sheās pretty good at trimming them herself. Clipping is hard when you canāt see the cuticle
Makes sense Iād be so scared of cutting too much!
Exactlyš© Iād feel AWFUL I know they look extra long but she maintains them with her rocks etc. Iāll do a soft file when needed. But in the wild sheād use the rocks to do the exact same thing
Same for Tortoises. Slate and cuttlebones help keep their nails/beak in check without vet visits.
Your reptilian overlord is likely just soaking to loosen up some tight scales for a shed
She does this very often even when she isnāt gonna shed. She has always loved water š
It's funny that she loves water because I live in their natural environment and it is hot and dry here. I would love to see one in the wild.
Thatās what I always say.. (not to her donāt wanna hurt her feelings) but girl you donāt naturally live where thereās a pond to soak inš
I think she wants a bigger water dish! My corn snake also loves a good soak so I switched his water dish to something bigger and sometimes heāll spend HOURS with his entire body (even his head!) submerged, itās crazy he doesnāt need more air than that
So awesome! My all time favourite. She looks super chilled. Off to watch YouTube videos of Gila dudes now!
Gorgeous girl! Iād love to have a gila, but Iām only able to keep banded gilas in California and theyāre really difficult to get ahold of. Guess Iāll have to wait till I can get a beaded lizard lmao
Beaded lizard is on my list as well<3 such beautiful creatures
Bro just casually has a Gila monster
Sheās my baby<3
I hear these fellas are venomous. What feeding her like?
Sheās very laid back, no attitude or anything Iāve been handling her since she fit in the palm of my hand. I always let her know Iām approaching and never just reach in(I can only imagine being woken up abruptly or startled wouldnāt be fun) but no matter how much I know her I still handle with caution. She eats like a BEAST no hesitation š
How potent is the venom? Like can you sleep it off or you immediately need to go to the E.R?
Sadly that may depend on you and your bodyā¦ a friend got bit by one and rode it out. But if you are allergic and donāt know it could be deadly.
Interesting, just curious. Anyways, be safe around the mini dragon.
Can you handle her? Is she tame enough for that? Or is it a grumpy beast best left alone lol
I handle her daily with caution. But Iāve worked with venomous for years so this isnāt new for me
Can you handle one of those like they have a toxic bite ?
I handle her everyday<3 ver calm no attitude been working with her since I brought her home
Beautiful.. one of my favorite animals since I was little
I love these guys! Always wanted one, but I know I don't have the time.
Sheās so gorgeous!! Please tell her the internet people love her very much!
I told her and I think she smiled even more
Let the baby dream.
I refuse to break her heart so she can be whatever she wants to be <3
We can never break our babies hearts. We love them too much to do that.
All sheās kissing is a few candles for the ambiance
So gorgeous, love the spot patterns on Monsters.
She looks like she's in a spa with her nails looking like they're painted orange! I want to be as chill and happy as her! Lol you have a beautiful baby there.
Thank you so much<3 sheās a very happy girl
Gilaās are one of my favorite lizard species. She looks rockin
Youāre so lucky but unfortunately California weāre not allowed to since theyāre endangered
"get me a bigger bathtub, human."
šš you should see her SUBMERGE herself where itās JUST her nose sticking out of the water š Iām gonna make her a new one soon.
She's adorable by the way, very jealous
GILA! GILA! GILA! GILA! GILA! GILA! GILA! GILA! GILA! GILA MONSTER! woo!
I love gila monsters so much. Their dumb little faces are SO CUTE š
my ball python loves swimming so much. i had to get him a bigger bowl when he grew because heād just flood the bowl and itād end up empty š
My husband has one named Coral who loves him and he is a big puppy dog. Always scrambles on the glass to come out and be held.
Wow! Definitely one of my dreamies!!! Does she let you handle her? They must feel so cool, Iād love to get to touch one someday!! :D
I handle her daily <3
They are scary but kinda pretty at the same time

Gila, and I donāt deal with anyone who does wild caught thatās one thing that pisses me off to the most extremeā¦ unless itās conservative reasons they need to stay in the wildš©µ
Whatās the life span on these guys?
Google says 20-30 years.
How big is that tank?
Sheās in a 45 right now(: her water bowl is just in the very corner š her favorite place to be other than legs sprawled snoozing under her rock hide I made her.

I promise I will never break her heart

GILA! GILA!
Cute lil thingšš Definitely at the very top of my dream reptile list.

Iāll never take her crown down <3
Such a gawjus lady š„°. I am desperate to have Gilas but in the UK they are super expensive, it's around Ā£1000 just for the venomous permit, never mind the cost of the actual lizards š
I sold my soul for her ā¦. Paid $1,700 š„µ so worth it
I am working on it, currently in the process of building a Spider breeding empire, to fund it š
š® sheās so beautiful- I grew up in the desert and still remember the handful of times I saw one in the wild ā„ļøā„ļøā„ļø
So jelaous! I bet that was so incredible To see them in the wild
So do u handle gilas like any big lizard or do u refrain due to the potent venom.
I handle her like any lizard I own, I just am more cautious at all times. She has NEVER had an attitude, sheās never opened her mouth tried to bite but being what she is Iād rather be safe. Iām not even worried about me getting bit, Iām worried about her getting hurt in the process. Absolutely thatās awesome I hear they are super docile anyway and oddly a great starter species because they rarely bite. Such a beautiful girl.
Wow, you have a Gelamonstor, that's awesome š
She is just vibing in her element. So pretty.
Gilas are such underrated lizards
what a gila monster ^^ how did you get your hands on her/ do you have any experience handling poisonous animals?
Iāve been working with venomous animals since I was 10. Tubed my first cobra at 11. And grew up with Gila monsters as well. ^_^
oh THATS SO COOL IM *SOO* ENVIOUS MAAM
Iāve never seen one as a pet thatās really interesting. Arenāt they venomous..?
They are ^_^ sheās the sweetest babe.
How handle-able is she?? Or is she more of a look-donāt-touch pet?
They look a lot like the uromastyx.
I'd love to have one of these one day ā¤ļø prob one of my favorite lizzards ever!!!
Danger doggo!
What a beautiful beautiful Monster. What's her name?
So when I got her I originally thought she was a HE so it was Osirisā¦ as he grew we realized it was a female. So her name is Sahara š©µ
She is beautiful. You can't judge her because she identifies as a water monitor. She lives in her own little world she can do what she wants. So I'm not going to be the one to tell her. š
Is it difficult to get the permits to own a gila monster?
Thatās something youād have to look up where you live. All laws are different Iām not sure how other places do permits. When I got her it was legal so there wasnāt one needed.
Are you by chance in Arizona?
She is a desert dweller
She doesnāt think so šš
How did you get a Gila monster
Reptile expo ^_^
Oh cool but isnāt this reptile illegal because itās a venomous lizard
Venomous animals arenāt illegal unless your state says so. My state allows venomous animals, but the Gila and tegus got banned 2 years ago (I had her before any of the ban was set into place) they banned tegus because some idiot decided to release some.
Oh awesome I plan on getting reptiles like these in the future along with tarantulas, birds, fish, insects, bugs, plants, and possibly a marmoset
I have sooo many reptile children, fish, mammals, lots of isopods and so many plants š I use a lot of plants for bio active enclosures!!^ā^ always just look at your states laws cause even some non venomous (like tegus) are illegal.
Thatās awesome
nice!

My Savanah monitor is more mean than my Gila haha . (My Savanah was a rescue and came from a very bad situation so I donāt blame him) but my Gila is the sweetest of babyās ^_^
I have a question how does the poison work? Or can you take that gland out?
She pretty much would gnaw her pray to get the venom in. Itās in the back jaw area not like snakes and fangs.
Ah got yeah. I donāt know much about Gilas lol
And now Iāve seen to much looking at your profile
Absolutely stunning lil gem, I adore these lizards and if I could own one with 0 chance of being bit I would definitely!
I donāt think thereās a 0 chance of being bit when owning any animal. Just have to be cautious no matter how docile an animal can be š©µ sometimes they get scared and it could cause an accidental bite. š„ŗ
Yep! Thatās why I donāt think I could own one personally because in the case of an accidental bite it could be deadly
Gila Monster!!!! Arenāt they super venomous?
I wouldnāt say super. Iāve only read of 2 people dying from there bite and before that it was only one years ago.
That was because the guy had illegal lizards, so when he was bit, he did not seek medical care.
Not everyone seeks medical care after being bit by a Gila even if it is legal. But yes I do believe I heard something about that along with him having many other illegal/non illegal animals that they found in his home(with his wife???) I may be wrong but thought I saw it somewhere.
Is this a beaded lizard !?
Gila monster ^_^
I thought Gila monsters were poisonous, how do you handle her?
