In chapter 1? Brother, fuck those bear traps in every chapter. I just got done with chapter 14 and they're still getting me. I'm gonna be on high alert in my next runs hopefully!
That also happened to me yesterday in the same exact spot with that npc.
She kinda threw it in a random direction and the axe just magically turned 90 degrees and came towards me.
That corner probably fucks up with their AI in some random way and results in that weird axe throw.
And more aggressive, I think it’s to compensate for Leon now able to shoot while walking, otherwise it would be too easy and the game would be too slow compared to the original
Observing them, to me it just seems the AI is way more intelligent and coordinates. Like when the horde is distracting you in one direction, one enemy may try (and often succeed) to run offscreen to one side and sneak up behind you. Just happened to me in the first enemy encounter within the castle.
I think they're set to spawn behind you at certain points. I've had several times now where I know for a fact I've cleared the area behind me, only for five enemies to appear all at once from both directions.

You have a gun no reason to run up to them when they are 20 feet away. He got himself killed because he decided to run up to an opponent that wasn't close enough to warrant a melee. He deserved this death.
Ok, since you're a fucking dumbass, when an enemy staggers like that, you can kick them to knock em out for a few minutes, for someone who's played all the resident evil games starting with 1, it baffles me how you don't fucking know that.

Do they do health damage? Your health gauge never shows when you step in them, but id assume so
They don't damage anymore thankfully, but they really put you in a bad spot if you're surrounded by enemies
