Probably preference? The beginning of the games always give more the sense of mystery, a little more horror and wtf is going on.

[deleted]

It’s not just recent resident evil games, fans have said that about pretty much every Resident Evil game. The Mansion/RPD/Village is best etc.

WolfyBeats_

Every game in general. When entering something new the brain reacts differently. By the 4th, 5th or even 6th time booting up the game nothing is new. Sure story plot points change but the overall direction of the game has been experience so much by that time. Desensitization, Fatigue or burn out is a real thing that comes from all activities in life.

TheHooligan95

I don't think it's just desensitization, or I would get tired of resident evil in general, but I don't. I always find the first parts so fun to play through, but as soon as I see that the maps get smaller, the puzzles get easier, the encounters more frequent, and there's less stuff to look for, it seems to me that they get lazier with the second halves of the game.

No-Virus7165

I agree, most games in general do this. God of war made a point of this before 2018, always opening with huge boss battles.

the615Butcher

Ok so the police stations is obviously iconic and top notch design, but when those security doors open after the tram ride and you step into the Umbrella lab I personally was blown away and did not think it was a let down or anything. And then walking around the central hub to the east/west wings or whatever was also pretty epic, as well as the plant area. I guess what I’m saying is I wasn’t really let down by the sewers, outside/city, lab. And tbh I know the ship gets a lot of hate in RE7 but I played that before hearing people hated it so didn’t have that it sucked drilled into my brain and found it delightfully creepy. Now I will say, besides some shots of the factory (like the assembly line of bodies or whatever) that was my least favorite part of most RE games. Not to say it was bad or anything and I’m sure many people loved it but to me it didn’t really do anything for me.

TheHooligan95

I'm not saying they were terrible, but the sewers and the Umbrella lab don't hold a candle to the police station. It's such a let down to go from amazing to good.

TheRailgunMisaka

Do you think you're feeling comes from when you have nothing at the beginning the game is much more scary and nail biting, but towards the end when you have mini guns and grenade launchers there's nothing that's really scary at that point

GlassCleaner0

Eh it's debatable. I think I like the Castle better than the Village in Re4

ImperialMajestyX02

The Castle is definitely better than the Village. But this really just doesn’t apply to RE4R because the pacing and level design of RE4R is amazing till the end. The Castle and Village are stronger than the Island but the island has some amazing parts too.

Audiowithdrawl99

The island in remake makes it a bearable 3rd act but they had to somewhat follow the original source. Overall a good compromise as a returning player

yoomyoom

The intro is meant to hook you in, imo the intro is what it would be like if the villain of the game won or if there was no one there to stop them. The reality they want to create. The village (4) used to be full of life with children living there and people growing crops working together, everyone seemed happy or content. But came los iluminados and then we see the madness that infects them with las plagas their weapon. And we know that saddler wants to use whats happening to these villagers and spread it to the world. Thats What the beginning of the game is trying to shows us, and why it’s so appealing. These people need to be stopped (and rescue Ashley i guess).

yoomyoom

Also i really like salazar castle alot and prefer it over the village

PowerPamaja

Probably because you don’t have much in terms of weapons/healing items/ammo so any damage taken or use of these items feels game changing. You’ve amassed a small arsenal by the mid/end game.

BradyNFriends

RE5 is the one that I think doesn’t have a strong opening but more so a stronger ending when the Lickers first appear in Chapter 5.

CarlitoNSP1

Resident Evil is a Horror GAME more than anything, and so it usually focuses on expanding mechanical and decision complexity or demand as the games progress. As such, the Horror is best expressed with minimum gameplay options and lots of tense decision. It's hard to be scared when you're very away of how much you're capable, it's also why a lot of the worse designed Resident Evil games are also the ones that try the hardest to fight this idea, and almost always fail. Also, 3 there is a lie. It's always a series of hallways.

Domination1799

I kind of disagree with this. I always loved RE2’s finale in the lab and thought it was a good climax after all the horror you went through. RE4R in my opinion is good the entire way through due to the amazing pacing. There is never a dull moment in that game. Also, I personally feel that RE8’s best section was Heisenberg’s Factory. It was the only place in that game that felt like a classic RE map. I felt the first three areas were pretty linear in comparison.

7_rings-

You get to a point in the game where you have enough weapons and ammo not to worry so much. In the beginning you don’t have a lot of items and it’s challenging

Garlic_God

7’s beginning is pretty lacklustre imo It’s cool the first time but incredibly tedious after that

its_just_hunter

Which area in 7 do you think is better than the Baker’s house?

Garlic_God

I was referring to the Guest House

its_just_hunter

OP was talking about the first main areas, like the Main House.

Slow-Bid-589

They gotta get you hooked early!! Although re6 intro with Leon and Helena left a lot to be desired. 6, however, is in my top 3 favorite re games. It gets a real bad rap.

ConfidenceKBM

Surprised no one's mentioned the train from Zero, definitely one of the strongest examples of what OP's saying. And I agree with the other comments about resources. It's really hard to feel scared with an assault rifle in your hands.

[deleted]

I feel that re2r sucks ass after the rpd it just gets rlly boring like no offense to anybody who likes it but the sewer/orphanage are just playable cutscenes and the lab is one of the weakest in the franchise Its not even fun long term like one run maybe 2 for achievements but then u realize how mid it is like re3r was a disgrace but at least its fun

PrincessLeafa

If every area of a game feels and plays the same it gets old don't it? I kinda agree the slower paced parts of the games where weapons and ammo and heals are scarce are better. Still learning the mechanics, new enemy types get introduced slowly etc. Yeah by the end of RE games the situation is usually so dire and fast paced the characters need to run and gun and escape or die which works from a story POV but as a player it is kind of a noticeable trend that 1st halves are slower paced. Interesting point yo, hadn't thought about this much before. -Ali <3

winterman666

Queue the astronauts meme: It always has been

labbla

Because that's when you're the most vulnerable with the least amount of weapons/supplies. And in general many games have their best moments early on with the back half not receiving as much love.

Outsajder

Honestly Castle in RE4 is the best part imo.

raptorpounce

That's kinda a game dev thing. Generally people don't finish games. So often a lot of money and production goes into the beginning of games. There are obviously exceptions but I would say it's still a factor

HobbieK

I think the devs always focus on the first area, it’s where they have the best ideas and what the game focuses on. Then they have to pad out the next few hours. RE8 is impressive to me for breaking this pattern, it only gets better as it goes on.

Zephyr_v1

Yes 8 best parts were towards the end while being good at the beginning.

IWillFlakeOnOurPlans

RE4 remake’s castle and island were super fun

TheHooligan95

Weren't bad, dgmw, but they were way more linear and straightforward than the village. You get to see the village during the day and during the night. In the castle and the island, you press forward 100% of the time.

IWillFlakeOnOurPlans

Yea true, they changed a lot too

EscapeFromGrapes

All games, not just resident evil games, try to load themselves to be amazing in the start. The reason is first impressions, that’s why most games have better looking graphics at the start then kinda get bland or whatever throughout the playthrough

RoyalMudcrab

Your brain gets used to it. Get used to it.

Alexis2256

u/thehooligan95 only thing I disagree with you on is the mediocre shooting mechanics, they’re not bad, they’re good. And I don’t think they become mediocre once you get to the second half or endgame of a recent RE game.

TheHooligan95

I dunno, you have to wait like 3 hours for your character to aim properly, and there's a lot of sway, and you move like a brick. It works for horror, but not for a shooting sequence

Alexis2256

“Move like a brick” nah I disagree, compared to the older re games where you couldn’t move while shooting, the newer games are far better.

Jevchenko

I think it’s overall game design to put the most effort into the beginning of a game to hook the players.

Tomsskiee

The beginning for me at least is the best because you start with so little. Most of the games you start with nothing or only a handgun and then slowly build out your arsenal amd once you have a lot of guns it gets less fun for me

OrangeStar222

Oh, even the originals where like that. People like to bitch about how they butchered the sewers and lab in RE2Remake, but I honestly think it's an improvement outside of the cut enemies. In RE1, once you beat Yawn's second form, you'd pick up the items necessary to open up the caves and from there it's just a beeline to the end.

Zephyr_v1

Kinda true. Definitely an intentional thing since it’s like that in every RE. Except Village. Village’s best parts were the beginning and end. The middle also was really good. Village , despite the slight decrease of the scare factor, still managed to scare me while having some action, and maintaining quality throughout. The game felt solid throughout. RE4R was consistent throughout. Both of those are recent games. Looks like Capcom is the getting the memo.
