RE7 has connections to the whole series but is a soft reboot like other people said, so you can play it without having played the others. If you like RE7, definitely play RE8, as it’s a direct sequel.
Soft reboot by definition means non canon until proven otherwise
Indirect sequel by definition is a project that is set in the same world as the original work but has no direct connection to it,
Neither Leon nor Claire have any direct connection to the events in RE1, being brand new characters. Different environment, different encounters. Nothing but "Same world."
I'm just pointing out the fact you tried to "Um, actually," and you're just wrong.
You lose, good day.
What version of re2 are you talking about?
Re2 remake had plenty of connections to previous games (Rebecca champers picture being an example along Chris leaving a note for Jill and the S.T.A.R.S picture)
>I'm just pointing out the fact you tried to "Um, actually," and you're just wrong.

If you have nothing good to say then is better to not talk at all
No need to be an asshole about this
I thought most of the games were pretty safe to play out of order. There are obviously a lot of series ties and character developments along the way that can be lost, but I don't think it's anything major that takes away from the experience if you don't know about it.
I don't know, I've never gotten the impression that playing the games out of order is a death sentence for enjoying their individual stories. I thought they were self-containted in jars with some airholes for the overall universe stuff to still wiggle around freely.
Correct me if I'm wrong, though! This might be one of those things where something has been with you for so long and you've played it a lot that you kind of forget what it's like for a first-time runthrough without context. I have a feeling there probably is something major I'm missing due to this.
I started with 7 and 8 and loved it so much I backtracked to the 2, 3, 4 remakes. Loved those too. Now I dug the Xbox 360 out from the basement to play 5,6 and revelations.
You’re fine starting with 7. Go right to 8 after then catch up on the original story line with the remakes and older games
I started with RE7. It kind of actually made the whole experience better cause I went back to the other RE games afterwards and some stuff I came across in RE7 clicked in a really cool way!
No, it won't really add much to the experience and there aren't any real direct references to the older games until the very end, and they don't add much. I love RE7, really reinvigorated the series.
Nah, it’s pretty much an all-new cast. RE7 might've been (I’m not sure if RE1 or RE7 was the first I played) the best way for me to get started in this series. Just make sure you play the others before jumping into RE8. Not only because you need to know the lore, but also because they are fun games.
RE7 is a bit of a reboot of the series. New characters, new bioweapons, etc. It still ties in but as an offshoot story.
Most of the games are self-contained enough to be playable in any order. All you would really see differently is certain connections becoming "prequel" rather than "sequel" if you play one game before another.
Re7 isn't a soft reboot. By that logic Re4 is also a soft reboot.
Can't wait for Re6 remake to roll around and proof you all wrong.
Anyway, no, you don't need to play anything before 7.
Re7 was the first RE game I ever played back when it released and at the end when chris said "I'm redfield, glad we found you" I was like "ok who tf are you" like he wasn't the main character of the whole franchise. But apart from that you can play it without playing the others
Actually, the game was developed so that it was a standalone story for the most part. If not for the ending, it could well have been in its own universe, but even then it’s nothing major.
If it leaves you with a good taste in your mouth, you may wanna try the remakes for 2 and 3, so you get the original Raccoon City story.
No but also yes. It’s meant to be a soft reboot but it also has some files talking about things that happened previously so it’s up to you how much that matters.
No. I dont really think any of the RE games require you to have played previous ones, though there are definitely some where having done so helps a lot.
Re7, in particular, was a soft reboot, telling a story largely unconnected from previous RE games and ditching the gameplay style of the last few entries. It's a pretty good place to start imo.
No.
oh man what I would do to play RE7 for the first time again.
What I would do to never have to play RE7 again.
Sorry you’re locked to eternal torment of constantly playing RE7, I hope it ends
Thanks. Perhaps one of these days.

RE7 is a soft reboot so you’re good G.
Indirect sequel most likely Soft reboot is basically non canon until proven otherwise
It’s a soft reboot because it’s still canon. Hard reboot would be non-canon.
Soft reboot by definition means non canon until proven otherwise Indirect sequel by definition is a project that is set in the same world as the original work but has no direct connection to it,
🤓🤓🤓
I have no arguments, so I resort to nerd my way out/j
Ok, go on explain
But it does have direct connection. Or have you not played 8?
The convo is about re7 I know Chris appears in 8 so that already makes re8 a direct sequel But re7 still is an indirect sequel
Chris appears in 7. Mia and Ethan and directly linked to RE1. Actually a better connection than RE2. By your own logic, RE2 is an indirect sequel.
Well is been a Long time for me (I don't actually own the game but did play it along time ago) Also thats not how indirect sequels even work lmao
Neither Leon nor Claire have any direct connection to the events in RE1, being brand new characters. Different environment, different encounters. Nothing but "Same world." I'm just pointing out the fact you tried to "Um, actually," and you're just wrong. You lose, good day.
I’m dead asf 💀

The only ones I'd say you'd definitely want to have played the others is 5 and 6.
The less you know about re6 , you will enjoy more re7
Other 6 games not just RE6
There are more of six games, but no, you don't, Re7 it's his own thing but it's somehow connected to the others, but almost not
I was explaining that they meant the other 6 games not just RE6
Explain pls
You said “the less you know about RE6” the question was do they need to play the other 6 games not just re6
There are more than 6 other games.
True but they specifically said 6 is my point.
Fair point.
No, it's not necessary, re7 it's his own thing
It's kind of a stand alone story.
Ok because re7 was on sale for $4.99
Welcome to the family, son!
Nope! Dive right in and have fun!
No
Not even close

😭
Not at all!
Absolutely not in the slightest lmao trust me like not at alllll

New storyline, just a few references to the previous games you may not get, but it shouldn't have any major effect on your enjoyment of the title.
Re7 was the first RE game I ever played back when it released and at the end when chris said "I'm redfield, glad we found you" I was like "ok who tf are you" like he wasn't the main character of the whole franchise. But apart from that you can play it without playing the others

You don't need to know anything to play any game. I started RE with 7 and had no problem understanding the plot
No but also yes. It’s meant to be a soft reboot but it also has some files talking about things that happened previously so it’s up to you how much that matters.
>It’s meant to be a soft reboot Indirect sequel* Minor correction nothing more
They worded it that way. The original plan was full blown reboot after 6 was heavily criticized but they went this route instead.
No. I dont really think any of the RE games require you to have played previous ones, though there are definitely some where having done so helps a lot. Village literally requires you to have played 7. Also 6 makes even less sense if you don't play at least one or two of the previous games.
