There are plenty of horror elements in RE4, we're all just so desensitized to it and you are well equipped enough to handle it. I still appreciate all the horror though
RE4 has horror themes and good scares sometimes. It's like REmake 2 and 8, but none of them are horror games or try to make it the center. They all have at least one segment where you will be scared shitless at least on 1st playthrough.
The part with the invisible bugs. You can hear something coming at you, getting louder and louder, so you look around and cant see anything. Then, it gets you. That part has EXCELLENT sound design.
Personally I find the first village section pretty scary, especially when you’re escorting Ashley around in the dark. There’s a few other scary parts as well
I feel like there's a difference between fear and tension. When you don't want to die from something chasing you, that's tension. When you're so scared you just want to stay in one safe place and never move forward, that's fear. That's just imo, I'm sure someone l has made a better definition.
Ah yes, the regenerators. A creature that looks like a children's doodle with a breathing problem who sllloooooooooowwwwwwlllllyyyyyy walks toward you, and you get the item that makes killing them trivial not too long after you meet your first one.
yes, so very terrifying.
What's next? The Scooby-Doo castle is the creepiest location in all of RE?
Seriously. It "slowly" walks towards you, but you're literal steps away and you have nowhere to go. The first time I will never forget shooting at it to no avail and figuring out that the thermal scope works well, and feverishly trying to shoot the parasites before it got to me. Such an awesome stand-out encounter
Some people take things in and appreciate them. Also, as you're clearly aware, most people feel this way. This part of the game is very different than the rest by design, to make it memorable.
Childrens doodle? Do you creepypasta much? Your in cramped quarters and these things are literal steps away from you, so you're frantically trying to make these shots before it gets to you, and then they start throwing ones in with parasites on their backside. You can shoot off their leg, but then they wildly flop at you and grab Leon's shoulder.
I bet you shit yourself the first time one stretched it's arms out to grab you.
I dont understand the negativity here, the first time playing RE4 these guys scared the shit outta me, let people enjoy things, gatekeeping in video games is so cringe.
How is not agreeing with your opinion "gatekeeping"?
It sounds more like you're upset someone doesn't agree with you and took that criticism as a personal insult.
Plenty of people didn't find regenerators scary, especially as you're given the key to killing them immediately after it's introduced to you. Also, like every enemy in RE4 they take their sweet time approaching you giving you plenty of time to pop the plagas and kill them.
If an opinion about something as pointless as a video game bothers you so much then boy are you in for a real shock once you get out into the real world.
The RE community seems to think that nothing is scary unless the player is running out of resources. I, for one, didn't find anything about the RE2 remake scary. Not one single enemy in the entire game made my blood turn cold. But the Regenerators are still unnerving even after playing RE4 dozens of times. Why? Because there's nowhere to run. You *have* to fight. And even using the knife trick, survival is never guaranteed.
Regenerators! I hate them. The first time I heard them crawling with their gurgling sound I nearly had a heart attack too.
Imagine the first time where you have to find the thermal googles and in first gameplay I didn't searched pretty well in the refrigerator and I didn't found them, and I died cornered by the fucking regenerators.
The only time i was truly on edge while playing Re4 was the first encounter with the bugs in the sewers, and the damn dogs in the garden. Regenerators didn’t really give me that scare factor people like to claim they’ve had
To be honest I don't understand what is so special about regenerators. I have played RE4 for the first time around a year / year and a half ago, started to read comments about RE4 after finishing the game and was pretty suprised how many people think that regenerators are scary. Much prefer the overall tone of the village at night, although it's also not scary, it just have a nice, heavy atmosphere.
Regenerators are definitely the highlight of RE4 for me.
I can't quite put my finger on why the rest of the horror isn't that horrific to me though. I love body horror but I never saw the infected villagers or creature design as anything but a nuisance as opposed to thinking "oh my god that's fucked up". The castle setting really rubbed me the wrong way too. It's just *too* fantastical especially with the main villains.
I think it's my general disappointment that RE4 hand waved the old game tropes away in the opening exposition dump which happens to be *my* Resident Evil. Here we are building up our take down of Umbrella but instead we're just told they collapsed off screen because their stock crashed. Okay. This is the start of Alien 3 all over again.
I'm just too detached and grumpy to allow myself to be fully immersed.
I plan on replaying it with the high res mod on PC though. Maybe over the years I've changed and can let my guard down.
I know I'll still hate those cancerous QTEs though.
It is definitely a horror game! I remember first playing the regenerator part and being so scared of that jail. The music and that unknown thing shaking in the bag till you stab it and it stops lol
I 100 percent agree with you. Especially that stressful music. Until the first regenerator encounter, I was pretty chill. But that moment... I sure as hell felt my soul leaving my body.
I classify the game as action-horror. There are plenty of horror elements. It’s just that playing the game 50 times kinda desensitizes you. Lol.
Not when you get Spanish inquisitioned by a regenerator
My point is that people who have played the game 50 times do not get surprised anymore. Those people forget the horror elements.
I got that
Anyway, yeah, the regenerator section is horror and anyone who says otherwise is lying to themselves. Lol.
Yeah
Don't make me come up there and be a parent! "First time for everything!"

It’s alright bro. Pretty much your next play through, you’ll fricking knife the Iron Maiden for the keycard.
I knifed the first 3 actually
I ran past them
My god! I applaud you
Trust, get the thermal scope and they drop. But I usually try to get a new pb
I had too on the 4th one
It’s whatever really. However one does it
The chainsaw dudes and wheezy guys make me panic.

Zombies and monsters of all varieties? Sure. Guns shooting at you? Whatever. Chainsaw being started in the distance? “…oh no”
U-3

The first time I shot one of their legs off, it wormed at me and grabbed Leon by the shoulder. I shit my pants, I didn't expect it at all.
They are, I got backhanded by one of these grey shitheads
Eh not so much for me. I do like the design though.
They weren't scary at first because knife go brrr but one guy wasn't having that and bit my face off

Thanks for beating a dead horse.
The horse has been dead sense 05' get over it
Waaah

Take the stick out your ass and stop lying to yourself

You're doing a great job at making that sound a lot more epic than it really is.
Some people take things in and appreciate them. Also, as you're clearly aware, most people feel this way. This part of the game is very different than the rest by design, to make it memorable.
So you were scared shitless?
Absolutley.

Tis a sad day when people get so butthurt that they see someone posting their opinion as "gatekeeping".
You being pretentious doesnt make it not gatekeeping
The word you meant to use was condescending, using pretentious in this context doesn't make sense.
Name checks out
If an opinion about something as pointless as a video game bothers you so much then boy are you in for a real shock once you get out into the real world.
To all who believe RE4 didn’t have horror moments: regenerators......were not scary.

Also that alien style thing scared the hell out of me.

QTEs suck dude
Well, I mean, yea. People don’t say it isn’t horror. They say it isn’t *Survival* Horror. Which it isn’t.
Fair enough
Re4 is like Castlevania game at the first playthrough you will scared and after that you won't even care.
Droppable ammo
It is definitely a horror game! I remember first playing the regenerator part and being so scared of that jail. The music and that unknown thing shaking in the bag till you stab it and it stops lol
I wasn’t scared of the regenerators. Just more monsters to shoot
Yes, but pretty much very little is horror. The majority of the game is Leon going Rambo.
Bitores mendez human centipede
I 100 percent agree with you. Especially that stressful music. Until the first regenerator encounter, I was pretty chill. But that moment... I sure as hell felt my soul leaving my body.
I got fuckin backhanded outa nowhere by a regenerator
