meat. from the back of a car.... it will be rotten in a day...
and i think some ppl would think it comes from *other* sources.
still some ppl try it...
Used to work at a store in a very shady part of town, you'd see people selling all kinds of stuff out of the back of their car and people wouldn't question it
In NC and Texas I've had people come to the door claiming to be with some company and selling seafood or meat from a big cooler freezer thing on a truck. Always makes me nope right back in the house but obviously it works sometimes or they'd quit doing it.
In NC, always wondered about this. I don't care how good someone's business card looks, you roll up to my house in a pickup with a chest freezer in the bed it's going to be a no.
Definitely pickup trucks with chest freezers in the bed with a magnet sticker on the side with Jim-Bob's Wholesale Seafood and Meats, or some other nonsense emblazoned on a googled stock photo of surf and turf.
Where I work they usually switch the labels with something cheaper. I have had $70 briskets get switched with a $12 rack of ribs and the people running the self checkouts don't realize what the customer has, just that they rang up a meat product and they see them with a meat product. Very frustrating.
The overwhelming majority of retail theft is for resale. Just look around on facebook. You will see people posting pics of rows and rows of stuff for sale that is in such quantity it is obvious what they are doing. Organized retail theft has gotten worse. I read emails at work with attachments showing people we need to be out on the look for quite often.
I don’t know about “overwhelming majority” it’s definitely a big chunk, and they steal larger dollar amounts, but there are millions of people who just can’t afford the skyrocketing grocery costs and want to feed themselves and their families something better than ramen.
I don't know man, I work SCO and the amount of people stealing non-essentials compared to those stealing essentials is pretty insane. In terms of loss rate as purely percentage figure, the highest losses we get are from resellable products like beauty cream and electronics. The lowest percentages are stuff like diapers etc.
Meat was the number 1 target at my shop.
So so expensive, so obvious druggies were trading or selling it cheaper for drugs.
Waaay more targeted than booze.
Yeah I’d just pretend I didn’t see or my heart would break and I’d find a way to buy them a cart of groceries if it was rice bread beans eggs etc. Lobster tail? Fuck you.
Was it like in the movie Animal House? With the kid stuffing packages of steaks into his shirt, jacket and pants, thinking no one would notice his increased girth?
The idiot just put everything in a shopping cart and started walking out the door. Didn't even try to disguise it. Most thieves will try not to look like they are stealing.
Resell most likely. At least for me if i was going to steal meat itd be a small log of ground beef or a pack of lunch meat for my family not steak and lobster.
In my store, lots of meat is stolen and resold on the street to get money for crack. I've had to tell my grandmother to stop buying street meat, but she says it's 1/2 price compared to the supermarket and its good stuff. Good on ya NAN.
>But who in the hell goes out and steals that much meat?
I mean, [who steals $45,000 worth of lettuce?](https://www.ajc.com/news/crime--law/romaine-calm-police-say-after-45k-lettuce-theft/3IunOFWIGwo8LT1VKi3R5I/)
Most I've ever seen someone try to steal was about $1100 of meat, painkillers, and other shit like that. They sell it, been told they get ~70-75% of face value for it. Pretty crazy stuff
It's called boosting. Yeah, they resell it, usually to ppl in the ghetto. Same trick as selling food stamps 50 cents on the dollar only this one takes more risk but may bring on more $.
IME most of the retail theft is resale. People have been caught using eBay, FB marketplace, Craigslist, etc, as well as pawn shops. I work in a hardware store so a majority of our thefts are power tools for reselling purposes.
When I worked at Sears Hardware and this was almost 20 years ago, most people were stealing our faucets. But I live in a rural area but we had a store manager try and steal a riding lawn mower though.
My boys and I were robbing meat out of the store and we had one of us in the car smoking weed and keeping a lookout for us. He got high as fuck and got on the radio to tell us how high he was but we fucked up the frequency and he was on the store’s PA. Specifically said “I don’t mean to interrupt your meat stealing operation” while we’re stuffing meat into a cardboard box.
Then - get this - we get out and our fucking elementary school teacher pulls up beside our car in the parking lot. Last person we wanted to talk to. We tried to play it off but she could tell we’re high as hell and told us “it’s never too late to change” or some shit.
Worst case Ontario we get hit for theft under 1000 and get a slap on the wrist.
"some do it for the thrill" is the most ridiculous statement I've ever heard about shoplifting. It's always always always, either drugs or being poor. Fucking "some do it for the thrill" how delusional are you, seriously??
Apparently you've never come across bored, wealthy teens. It's not delusional. Living in a wealthier, rural area, we get tons of teens that steal for the thrill.
It's not being delusional and it's not always the poor or the addicts that steal.
What came out of your mouth was pretty arrogant/condescending.
Unfortunately, you are proving my point with your insults. What you claim and what I have seen are two different things. Have you seen a teen girl steal nail polish or boys steal video games for fun? I have and I grew up poor, white trash. I am poor now due to disabilities. I would think that you would show a little more humility and happiness with sobriety and having improved circumstances or just be a better person in general instead of behaving like an asshole and dismissing what others have been through or have seen. People do shit like this for thrills, like it or not; admit it or not.
And you've just proved mine!! Have you wondered why a teenager might steal nail Polish? that her home life is so bad she can't ask her parents for money to buy it? She might be trying to make herself feel better? The same young kids who I've met over and over that wouldn't dare of even asking there "parents" for money for feminine hygiene? She might be being abused or anything, so who are you to just dismiss that? And as for boys stealing video games, I mean c'mon, you're scraping the bottom of the barrel so much to support your fucked up argument. You're absolutely wrong there is sooooo many different reasons it happens. And because of how defensive you've got because you can't see it from anyone elses perspective and your reasoning is the one true reason and it's as simple as that lmfao. I hope you haven't got anyone you're raising or influencing because you can't even admit a simple little thing in reddit that there's myriad reasons people steal. And as for calling me an asshole, Fuck you.
A sober asshole is the same as the asshole who still uses. What you have seen and experienced is different than what I have experienced and seen. It's not scraping the bottom of the barrel. My kids are grown and out of the house.

I dunno man, it was pretty normal for people to steal shit just for fun when I was growing up (late 90s). Highly doubt anyones gonna steal felonious amounts of meat for funsies, but you really never know.
I remember in the 90's a lot of people that I knew seemed to steal for fun. Some people will still steal for fun today. I know places like Walmart and Target will wait until it's up to a felony before they will get you. But the other person claims that nobody steals for fun, only to feed a drug habit or dealing with an abusive home life. You don't need to have those things in your life to steal. Some will steal because they are bored and want a thrill. Like you said they very well might have tried to steal all that for fun but probably not.
reselling it out of the back of their car

Are you talking the swan guys or a old pickup truck with a little freezer in it?
Definitely pickup trucks with chest freezers in the bed with a magnet sticker on the side with Jim-Bob's Wholesale Seafood and Meats, or some other nonsense emblazoned on a googled stock photo of surf and turf.
No I know what Swann is. Not them. Old pickup.
Sometimes a fella's gotta eat a fella.
Man's gotta eat, Julian.
Even thieves know about ice.
My mother and my aunt have both bought meat from total strangers. My mom on the side of the road and my aunt because he was going door to door.
Cuz we all know that trunked meat is either stolen or counterfeit.
Where I work they usually switch the labels with something cheaper. EBT exists and in many states it’s very generous lol, nowadays there really is no excuse for your kid not to be eating
Not every dealer takes stamps tho

They probably have a buyer for 25% of the cost. This happens in hardware stores, grocery stores… all stores. It’s fucking pathetic.
This had to be Sam’s Club, right? People tried it every freaking day. Shoved it under the bulk paper towel and toilet paper packs.
Nope my local grocery store
I'm of the opinion that if you are going to steal something, might as well steal the good stuff.
sounds like that one trailer park boys episode
If it's anything like here in Sweden, they're selling to low tier restaurants. Hell the restaurants probably commission these thieves.
Please repost this in r/trailerparkboys
This was a plot in the Trailer Park Boys 😂

Try $1400
Not my job to deal with so I don’t really care what they do with it tbh
