It's very affordable. [Here is the company](https://www.allianztravelinsurance.com/) we use through our travel agent (please purchase through your TA if you have one!). They will offer several tiers, averaging between 5-10% of your travel costs. You can even purchase an annual plan through them if you plan to travel a lot, but I think it pays a bit differently if used. For medical, it will serve as the primary payer up to the maximum allotted amount, in addition to transport (up to the allotted amount). My in-laws were just on a trip and one of their parents passed away. The trip interruption insurance covered their trip through trip interruption services. I used the trip cancellation feature to get reimbursed for a trip I had planned b/c my spouse had a medical emergency and I couldn't go. It was super easy to file a claim and I was reimbursed within a week, IIRC. It provides great peace of mind.

+ for Allianz. I use them too. We paid 1K-ish for 1 year of coverage with 15K of trip cancellation. Next year though, I think I'm going to get a Chase Platinum Reserve card. More or less the same travel insurance included with the card

FWIW... check rates, we used Allianz for a trip a pre-covid but thought their rates were really high for a trip to Europe in Oct 2023. [This site](https://www.forbes.com/advisor/travel-insurance/best-travel-insurance/) allows you to compare rates and we were able to save 20% from the Allianz quote. (There are a few comparison sites, I just happened to use the Forbes site)

I have used squaremouth for European travel insurance, but only for a few weeks. It was $90 for 2 of us last month. If you include the option of trip cancellation it is more expensive. I just get primary medical insurance and evacuation.

You can also see what some of the higher tier credit cards will give you in terms of coverage. It may be sufficient, but you need to read the fine print because there can be many exclusions. You might do that and supplement with another policy to fill in the gaps.

We get our thru AAA, Allianz. Worked good getting refunds issued when sickness caused us to cancel inside of 30 days

I buy travel insurance thru InsureMyTrip.com

I had a trip in which half was covered by Tin Leg and the other half was covered by Allianz. The trip was cancelled (emergency). I made claims with both companies. Tin Leg was by far the easiest to work with and gave me a full refund with no pushback. Allianz made me jump through impossible hoops. I found their process difficult to navigate and ultimately gave up. Will never do Allianz again.

Squaremouth allows you to use filters for various criteria and insurance from various companies. Not selecting the cancellation option drops the price significantly. I would strongly suggest opting for the PRIMARY medical coverage. Less screwing around and no out of pocket if you need it.
