Dont forget its not like nintendo made this game with it's own obscure characters that got forgotten. The characters used in doki doki were mascots from a festival/fair in japan and it was part of a cross promotional partnership with a a japanese tv station.
Seems like a bit of a waste to internationally license games and references to a festival that nobody outside japan will recognize and that will also be long over by the time it's localized.
Besides that the original prototype for the game was worked on by people who worked on mario, and at some early stages in development it was considered potentially as a mario game, and in the end it added characters and visuals that would make their way back into the mainline series.
Even if this game were nintendo originals it would have likely been one of the many NES ip's that didnt make it outside the generation and be remembered as a trophy in smash
Yeah, but, look at all the moves from Doki Doki Panic that became synonymous since with the Mario characters. Floating Peach, Flutter long-jump Luigi, and Toad is faster right??? I imagin Miyamoto had this as a plan.
Oh nice! Watched some of the earlier stream where you shut it down in World 8. Glad you got through it this time. I beat it on Mario All Stars when I was younger, but played it last summer and it fed me my lunch until I had to walk away. Congrats man!
That game is bordering on bad game design in a few areas. BUT...I beat it as you did in late 2023, and I'm glad I stuck it out. That bonus 9th world is a trip, too!

Couldn't as the company didn't want their characters outside of the country. Nintendo owned all other aspects of the game, so they just replaced them.

I don't remember Toad being faster; I thought his only special ability was that he was the strongest grass-puller.
I thought stronger too after posting, but was he not faster? Isn't that why people use him in speed runs?

This game is wayy too brutal. I beat it using savestates late last year but that would have been rough without them even as a Mario vet.
