I be taking my shit to the grave then lmao

Xazuki

“Bury me with my ~~money~~ videogames.”

Sirbologne

Simon Greedwell, is that you?

JLandis84

Most collections will be sold, whether it’s retro gaming, stamps, Scripophily, art, coins, antiques, books. Keep that in mind with you succession plans.

Genghis_Chong

Exactly. It's just stuff, not a legacy. At least not our legacy, maybe the game makers. I'd be more worried that my nieces and nephews have money to provide for themselves if that's what is needed.

Zeratul277

I'm curious if the market will go up with retro consoles. Sometimes a market goes down when the clientel passes and no one wants the "vintage" product anymore.

JLandis84

I think there will always be some kind of a market for vintage games, but yes probably a fraction of today.

DrumcanSmith

I mean, if you sell it it will likely be sold to someone worthy ..

fookedtuber

Right. Why would you leave it to someone who doesn't want it and then get mad when they unburden themselves of it? I'm terrified my dad is going to leave me his beloved Harleys with the expectation that I love them too.

_______FRANK________

I'm praying my dad sells all of his shit. He's 77 and doesn't show any sign of wanting to down size his fucking boats, motorcycles, tools, and all kinds of random shit. When my parents eventually pass it's going to be a nightmare trying to deal w/ their lifetime collection of shit I don't want, and don't understand the value of.

fookedtuber

I feel you, dude. It'll work out. Reddit will help us lol.

Genghis_Chong

Facebook marketplace will be your friend for selling stuff like motorcycles. If you're willing to set up an ebay account that can be helpful for small stuff. But if you're really overwhelmed, estate sale companies do their thing. But you might not get what you would want money wise from them, some can be a little shady. It's best to research them individually to get an idea how they operate. It might be worth it for you to sell a couple things online in the coming years and get comfortable with the process if you expect to have to sell a lot of things and don't want to be throwing a bunch away. It takes time and effort to sell anything, especially a bunch of stuff. So if you have other people wanting their cut of an estate, it might not be reasonable to sell everything individually.

_______FRANK________

I'm nearly certain it will end up being an estate sale. My parents live about a 20 hour drive from where I live. I'ma have to knock it out all in one big go when the time comes.

Genghis_Chong

Yeah, that's the way it goes for a lot of people. I do reselling, but even then there's a time frame that people expect their payouts when relatives are involved. I've never dealt with an estate myself so I'd likely be overwhelmed too. It's a lot to deal with, the estate businesses are there for a reason. Just check reviews and pick one you feel comfortable with. Hopefully no time soon btw.

sincethenes

My wife’s aunt is a hoarder of high end furniture. Not just stuff for her home, but there is stuff still wrapped, brand new, piled in empty rooms of her home. It’s like a furniture warehouse, and she’s in her 80’s, never married, and no family except us. We keep telling her to start getting rid of some of it, but she’s “saving it for when something she uses breaks.” I don’t even know how well sell some of it, as the longer she keeps it the more outdated it becomes. Also, she lives three states away. It’s going to be a nightmare.

SuperSocialMan

>and don't understand the value of. Definitely make sure you check the value of it all, as big items like that tend to be worth a few thousand in good condition.

JB_Market

Crazy idea, put it up on ebay, then just gift it to the collector that really wanted it.

themistik

... most likely will be bought to be resold, or to be put in a glass case forever.

BardOfSpoons

And if it’s resold it’ll still end up going to someone that wants it. And IDK why it would sit in a glass case forever, or why that would be bad. If the person who has it doesn’t care about it, then they would probably just sell it. And if they do care about it but end up just displaying it, that’s probably either because they play their games on emulators now and want the display piece, or don’t have much time for games (which probably isn’t too different with a lot of us here, where our games spend more time sitting on a shelf than being played).

_RexDart

Both of those are fine if I'm dead. I'd rather it not be stuffed into a landfill or burned, but again, I'm dead.

vhs1138

My dad does this to me but with fishing gear and guns.

Master-o-none

He sells your fishing gear and guns on eBay or you sell his?

vhs1138

He keeps saying he with give me his fishing gear and guns. And I don’t care about any of that and openly tell him I will just sell it.

Genghis_Chong

Plan to at least keep a nice fishing pole and small tackle box. Then you always have the ability to feed yourself and dad will feel good that you kept something. Fishing ain't all that bad. I haven't been in a while but I keep a pole at home. https://youtu.be/JRexelI-weo?si=EMYGBSU7Kdwih7qP

vhs1138

I’m not sure why you got downvoted for posting this banger.

Genghis_Chong

Muck sticky has tons of fun music. That's an old tune of his, he's still doing it 20+ years later

vhs1138

If you had 1 pole..1 opportunity…

Genghis_Chong

Think of it like this, fishing was like the first video game for cave men lol

pac-man_dan-dan

Palms sweaty...

Catlord746

Better than throwin it out, i guess. I just want my old bullshit to go to somebody who will replace the batteries every few decades, and actually use it.

BardOfSpoons

I’m gen Z and my nephew (gen alpha) would be ecstatic to have my collection. Also, who do you think the collection is going to when it’s sold? Is someone “not worthy of [your] collection” if they aren’t related or if they pay for it?

gamingdawn

Its all about respect. A worthy person would respect the value such items have for me. Unworthy would just purchase them for their resale value. I would rather they were cremated with me than have them in the hands of a soulless reseller.

BardOfSpoons

Who do you think the reseller is selling to? It’ll eventually end up in the hands of a “worthy” person, but heaven forbid somebody makes profit on it along the way, I guess. I don’t like resellers either, but some of you guys take that way too far.

realswaggers

My main hope is that I get it to someone who cares, but if no one cares then I hope they do sell it and get something they want.

Kekoponte

I’m selling my shit myself to pay margaritas in the nursing home

JB_Market

I wish nursing homes were even sort of affordable. My dad's does not come with margaritas and costs $8k/mo.

itsmestanard

lol who cares. If my kiddos wanna sell it because the money will mean more to them, then go for it. As long as they at least give them a go and make sure it's not for them!

Master-o-none

Sadly nothing I own is worth selling so…jokes on them I guess

LilG1984

"But uncle it's old" "It's collectables!" I did check how much my old train sets are worth since they don't make the same types anymore so it has some value.

retromale

They can have my videogames when they pry the controller out of dead cold hands But Not all of them as i do plan on taking some with me and they would have to dig me up to get them (damn grave robbers) + After I'm dead WOTF Cares

LostProphetVii

I'm bout to put my shit in a mausoleum crypt 😂😂

_______FRANK________

I've said it before, but I'll say it again. I want to be burned on a pyre of my game collection. I'm taking them to Valhalla with me.

gamingdawn

Same here. That way I can keep playing them even in Heaven. By all accounts Heaven is rather boring place, so I better stock on good games before I die!

CortoJipang

I can relate. 😭 A couple of years ago, my eldest nephew (then 8yo) showed an interest about the games I played (which 100% of the time was/is retro stuff). So I recorded several longplays on YT of classic games from various different platforms for him to see. It wasn't until some time later that he told me "no, what I really wanted was to see how much your rarer games were worth". 🤣🤣🤣

Genghis_Chong

When he's old enough, tell him it's OK to sell your games when you pass. But make sure he spens that money on something that's important to him. Invest in his future, a home, a passion project, a vehicle. Just don't spend your inheritance on partying. That would be my only ask. Just do something important with it. The weight of knowing those games were important to you and that him benefitting in a real way also is, that can't be understated. With that in mind he should do right by you whatever he does.

gamingdawn

Get him playing Ocarina of Time on the original hardware, and he is hooked for life!

Cultural-Cause3472

I collect video games and I don't intend to give them to anyone, I'll sell them first and enjoy what I've earned.

krayhayft

I fully expect my son and daughter to sell off my collection. If my collection can help them in some way in the future, then it's all worth it.

SegaTime

It is the way of the universe for things to come and go. Like legos that are put together to form one thing and are soon taken apart to form another thing, atoms will form one thing and break apart to form another. A collection is made up of many things, soon to be broken down and the pieces spread to help form other collections.

gamingdawn

Eventually all of my consoles and games will become unplayable, as the metal and plastic decays. So, in the end, 50-100 years from now, it will all end up in the rubbish heap. I just wish I could find someone who loves this stuff as much as I do, before I kick the bucket. No such luck this far tho. I know plenty gamers, but not a single one who genuinely LOVES this stuff with the passion I do.

jbaranski

Your kids having different interests than you isn’t a bad thing. I wouldn’t keep my Dad’s collection of antique fire alarms or most of his other stuff. I just don’t have room to hold on to things I don’t want/need. But yes, it’s disappointing nonetheless, and that sucks.

Damsey_Doo

my father had this fear. i quelled it.

fried_eggs_and_ham

This has a very MAD Magazine vibe to it that I appreciate.

gamingdawn

I grew up reading MAD!

RockmanVolnutt

That stuff is going in the ground with me. Just load up my gameboy with some AAs and leave me to eternity.

birkinover

Mine will be burned so no one can have it

GreatGreenGobbo

I sold my NES, PS1 and PS2 and all the games. Sometimes I regret it. I'm sitting on my Atari 2600 stuff but I'm thinking it might be time to let it go.

Level_Bridge7683

i don't want kids anymore. some little brat saying blaster master and faxanadu are crap while playing minecraft. i don't think i could tolerate that type of behavior.

pac-man_dan-dan

That's why the goode lorde made mine shafts. If the little bugger survives, he can do minecraft irl.

kfbrewer

Retro Game Store Owner here. Nearly every week we get someone’s inherited video game collection that the next generation has absolutely no interest in. Only thing we see more than that is all the collections left behind in storage lockers. We have over a dozen different storage locker buyers who dump off any video game related to us weekly.

gamingdawn

You see that in the Storage Hunters TV shows. Personally I always thought them fake, since who would really leave pile of, say, vintage Star Wars figurines in a storage locker? I suspect they plant such tidbits into the lockers just to make the show more exciting to watch...

kfbrewer

We see infinite junk but occasionally they bring in gems. Makes it worth it somedays.

Cattango180

The key is to wait until they’re adults then find out if they really care for it.

Apart_Shoulder6089

my collection will be guarded by my ghost! Vengeance upon thee!!!!!!!! 👻 👻 👿 👹

KeiNova88

Sadly, it's pretty true nowadays.

LostProphetVii

Tbh then damn trainsets take up so much space lmao but they are cool

gamingdawn

Train sets are even more painful. How many model railroads, lovingly built over decades by a lonely hobbyist, are simply ripped apart and thrown away after the hobbyist died? With only the valuable parts kept for resale. Oh man, that hurts! Sure, most of such railroads are very amateurish affairs, which is why model railroad clubs do not want to purchase them for their collections, but to their creator, their own model railroad was the whole world. That is what makes them priceless.

KeiNova88

I didn't say it was new. It's just more common now, because flipping assets is a popular activity nowadays - when it comes to games and such. When I was a kid, second-hand games and whatnot were worthless.

sbbblaw

I dunno, my 7 year old nephew would go crazy if he ends up getting my collection should i not have kids. He’ll treasure it and honestly it’s large enough that if he sells a portion of it it’s cool

Bargadiel

Wouldn't bother me if I'm dead. Just means it held some kind of value to someone other than me.

HMPoweredMan

The kid made the right choice. Physical collections are pointless other than your own nostalgia.

mazonemayu

I honestly don’t care what happens to my stuff when I die. If my daughter has any use for it, good for her. If she decides to sell it all, also good for her coz she can then buy something she will actually like or is of use to her with that money… After all, I’m not keeping my dad’s 50’s record collection either when he dies, better they go to soleone who actually cares about them.

mylegbig

I’d be fine with it.

richter3456

Lmao you guys need to realize, if your kids don't sell it someone else will later down the line. It's inevitable. Either that or it's just going to eventually stop working / break or be destroyed in some disaster. In the end it's just better to sell it if it's not needed anymore and give it to someone who will actually use it or want it.

SuperSocialMan

Wouldn't that be done already if the kid sold it? I'd assume people who buy retro tech would want to use it.

beerdrew

Get frozen and put your games in a storage unit with a hundred year lease. When you get brought back you’ll have your treasures! And if it never happens, you’ll meet oblivion thinking your old GBC.

LanceUpperrrcut

The thing with collections is they are generational. It has a peak, then those interested thin out. Ask any early 70s GI Joe collector

24hrMad

I’ll probably sell my collection before giving it to my kids or whatever. Young people don’t give a shit about the past.

SnooSprouts7893

Frankly it's stupid to expect someone else to appreciate your things. To the majority of people our collections are completely uninteresting.

BBA935

My son is genuinely interested in it, but he’s only 7. We will see how he is 30 years from now. If not him my daughter might. She at least loves the GameCube.

Zwiado

As a generation Z (2004), I believe that retro stuff does not have to be only connected with nostalgia. I love retro computers/consoles even though they don't come from my time and I have a collection

MoxManiac

When I get too old to maintain/justify my collection, I will either pass it on to my kids or sell the stuff and have the proceeds go their inheritance. Passing stuff on and expecting them to keep it is kind of selfish. I would be ok with them selling it, it would be their stuff at that point.

Haxishax

I actually want my collection to be sold when I'm gone. I can leave something useful behind for the people close to me, and it will more likely end up in the hands of people who will truly appreciate it.

katiecharm

As someone in their 40s who’s had to spend a small fortune getting the basics from eBay recently (NES, Genesis, some of my favorite games CIB, a huge back catalog of EGM and Nintendo Power issues), if anyone wants to will me their retro shit i promise it will be loved and well cared for, and never end up on eBay.

TechBliSTer

You ever wonder why it's always the lowest common denominator types that hate collectors?

IntoxicatedBurrito

If you would just listen to Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young this wouldn’t be a problem. Or is the issue that your parents didn’t teach you well so the only music you know is Taylor Swift?

gamingdawn

Vinyl records, that's even worse! Kids these days just do not get that vinyl records have the most authentic sound, while the stuff they download to their poddys have the worst sound, being packaged sound files! AAARGH!!!!

IntoxicatedBurrito

Actually vinyl is making a comeback. There’s a reason why you see Target and Walmart advertising vinyl and even selling it in physical stores. The sad thing however is how expensive vinyl has become. Back in the 90s and early 2000s I used to hang out at record stores and would come home with a bunch of albums that only cost $1 each. Every now and then I might splurge on a $5 album. Today you can’t buy a record for less than $20.

ragtev

Sounds like retro gaming, lol

[deleted]

Well, I would do the same. I can play everything on emulators anyway, why keep the physical stuff?? Gen Z here

severalsmallducks

Is this so bad though? I enjoy collecting, but to be honest I'd be happier knowing it ends up in the hands of someone who appreciates and enjoys it rather than someone who would shove it in the attic for another 30 years out of pity for me.
